LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT
Dear Fellow Chesapeake Beach Residents,
Aren’t we glad that winter has gone? We had some glorious spring
weather, but it looks like air-conditioning season has started already.
Here we go, into summer and all that holds for us! For me, weather
matters, but I am retired and do not have to get in that early-morning
traffic anymore!
On June 3rd the annual Civic League picnic will be held at Bayville Park
from noon till 3 pm. Patti Robertson and Amy Oliver are putting this
annual crowd pleaser together, so please plan to attend with your fami-
ly!
Also, please be aware that on the morning of June 10th our 5K running
event will be held in the neighborhood. This will cause some temporary
street closures early in the day. Please share this info with your neigh-
bors. Chad Hutchens, our 5K chairperson, and the race committee are
working hard to make this a memorable event! If you want to run in
this race, please register at: https://www.athlinks.com/event/cxb-low-
rent-5k-145139 and see details on Facebook at Annual CXB Low Rent
5K.
As always, I hope you will join the civic league to support events in the
neighborhood and gather with friends and neighbors at our meetings
the third Monday of every month, 7 pm at Commonwealth Brewery.

THERE’S A NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN
KEEP IN TOUCH
...Okay, maybe not a Sheriff, but there IS a new Code In-
spector in town.
At our February civic league meeting, we welcomed Denise Wethington, our new Code Inspector. Ms. Wethington is part of the Virginia Beach Department of Housing and Neighborhood Preservation Committee.
She explained that her territory is large but Chic’s Beach is in her zone. Her division maintains the safety and appear-ance of the city’s existing structures and properties through routine inspections. Code Enforcement Inspec-tors also respond to complaints about housing and proper-ty maintenance code violations. She described common complaints such as the grass is too long, vehicles with out of date tags, noise issues and bulky items left in the street.
For more information on the City’s property maintenance code requirements, contact Code Enforcement at 385-4421 or visit www.vbgov.com/codeenforcement.
We appreciate the work that Denise Wethington is doing
and welcome her to our community. You can email her directly at [email protected].
BUT before you make that call, we suggest getting to know your neighbor. Remember that communication is key to working out problems. Your neighbor may be completely unaware of your issues. None of us are mind readers. Don’t assume that your neighbor knows what is bothering you. Try to head off problems before they become prob-lems. If you are having a party let all the neighbors who may be affected know or even better, invite them.
Of course if something dangerous or illegal is happening, the police are the obvious answer.
We live in an amazing community and being cour-teous neighbors makes it even better!

Girl Scout Troop 212
Needs Collected 500lbs
of YOUR Trash!
You guys are AMAZING! In just
two months, Chic’s Beach col-
lected over 500lbs of plastic! In

bench for the Little Free Library
at the corner of Chubb Lake Ave.
This project went so quickly
with such great results, Trex
Decking has agreed to do it
again for another one of our
community Little Free Libraries!
Please continue to drop off your
plastic bags at the new drop-off
location: 14 Bradford Point.
As a reminder, items accepted to be transformed are: grocery bags

2017 CBCL EXECUTIVE BOARD AND COMMITTEE
LOW RENT 5K– FAQ’S CXB MEMORIES BY WALLY DAMON
I have been lucky enough to live in
Chesapeake Beach for most of my
life and have been able to enjoy the
bay waters and our beach for more
than 60 years. When I first moved
here with my family in March of
1957, there was a ship, (the Para-
porti,) grounded on our beach for
almost a year. That ship was there
for so long that a new beach formed
all the way around it. It was very
odd to be able to walk all the way
around it! There was no Chesapeake
Bay Bridge Tunnel in our view of
sunrises and sunsets in the sum-
mer. We had a wooden footbridge
across Pleasure House Lake from
the bay to Pleasure House Road. We
were able to build bonfires on the
beach and drive our jeeps out there.
There were Concord grapevines,
pear and fig trees on Lookout Road.
Apple trees, blackberries and weep-
ing willows were everywhere. There
were so many bay oaks on the cor-
ner of Lookout and Pleasure House
that vines grew between them at the
top and we kids could climb from
one to another without touching the
ground. Same thing at Lookout and
Lee, the vines formed big canopies
at the top and sunlight barely got
through.
The Chesapeake Beach Volunteer
Fire Department was the center-
piece of our cottage-filled bayside
community; there were no condos
and very few paved streets or drive-
ways. There was a Chesapeake
Beach Men’s club that met in an
enormous building attached to the
Fire Department. There were meet-
ings, dances, etc. usually put on by
the Fire Department’s Ladies Auxil-
iary. The original fire department
building sat where the CBBT toll
plaza is today. There was the Shore
Drive Inn Restaurant right down
from the Shore Drive-In movie the-
ater. On the bay beach, Chic and
Audrey Leddington had their little
hot dog stand one block west of
Buster’s Beach, which was on the
bay at the north end of Seaview
Ave.
…to be continued…

1. What the heck is a Low Rent 5k and what does it have to do with me?
There’s a 5k in your neighborhood, and the Chic’s Beach Civic League has organized
it! About 300 people will register to run/walk this event on the morning of June 10
to raise money.
2. Raise money for what? Donations are made to Cox High School “All Night
Grad”- An after-graduation program which organizes a “lock-in” event, (this year on
the Spirit of Norfolk!) to encourage our teenagers to make good decisions and pre-
vent drunk-driving. CBCL feels strongly that we should be investing in our youth’s
safety. Donations are also made to the Chesapeake Beach Rescue Squad for their
help in our community throughout the year. The rest of the proceeds from the 5k go
to benefit the Civic League for community improvement projects, which are present-
ed to and voted on by members of the CBCL.
3. I don’t run...How will this affect me? Streets will close down from 7:15AM un-
til 10:15AM…In the past this has been no longer than 30 minutes for the West Side
and one hour for the East Side. CBCL hangs detailed notifications on each door in
the community reminding people prior to the event. We ask residents on the race
course to please arrange your schedule so that it doesn’t impact your day. We aren’t
trying to be a burden, we want everyone to be happily informed.
4. Where will everyone park? Athletes who don’t live in CXB can park in the Chic’s
Beach Shopping Center ...and will be provided transportation to Commonwealth
Brewery. Shuttle times are 6:45AM-8AM and 10:45 AM-11:15AM
5. Okay, I’m sold. Where can I sign up? We encourage any runners or walkers to
participate in this event. It’s going to be a blast, and we want to share this experience
with all of our neighbors. Please visit https://www.athlinks.com/event/cxb-low-rent
-5k-145139 to register yourself and ask your friends and family to join you!
6. I hate running and you’re closing down my streets so I can’t drive. What
am I supposed to do with my time? Hey, here’s an idea...Volunteer to help out!
CBCL needs volunteers to put together race packets, hand out packets, pass out wa-
ter to the athletes, and to help clean up.
7. Any SWAG involved? Heck yes! The first 250 finishers will receive a Finisher’s
Medal. and all participants will receive a SWAG bag with a T-Shirt, coupons and
giveaways from our Sponsors, and one FREE Beer at Commonwealth Brewery.

Recently, there was an article published in The Virginian Pilot highlighting Chic’s
Beach. The efforts made by Becky Bump and Michele Zimmerman of the Recurrent
Flooding Committee have made some huge waves within the city. The Committee has
attended City Council Meetings and is calling on Officials to give serious considera-
tion to our neighborhood when addressing flooding issues in the upcoming budget.
CBCL has requested that the city update our neighborhood’s storm water drainage to
prevent flooding after heavy rainfall, to which some have lost their CXB homes en-
tirely.
You may ask yourself what you’d get out of a membership. This Committee and sub-
sequent news article are a great example of what you can achieve when you work to-
gether for a common interest. Could the homeowners raise their concerns to the city
for their singular property issues? Sure, but they’re much more likely to gain momen-
tum, getting attention and working with the City toward a solution. An organization
such as the Chic’s Beach Civic League is SO much more valuable than the $15 is costs
to become a member. Please consider joining us, if not to be a part of what we do,
than to support it. We are here for you!
