LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT

Hello CXB Neighbors,

Spring is in the air! Sunshine and warm weather brings out the Chic’s

Beach life like no other. This promises to be a special beach year with

all that we have in store for the neighborhood. I can hardly wait for

our 5th Annual CXB Low Rent 5K. Race Director Amy Bouchard and

our committee volunteers are working diligently to make the race

even better than last year’s. Our race promises to be so much FUN

and such a great family experience. We have partnered with Com-

monwealth Brewery and the Patriot Pub to provide entertainment

after the race. Make sure to mark your calendar for Saturday, June

9th. Please be on the lookout for a very important informational door

hanger. The door hanger will give very vital information on the race.

You may notice the term “Low Rent” in our event name. The name

“Low Rent” has been synonymous with a Chic’s Beach sailboat regatta

that spanned 20 years from 1978 to 1997. We garnered the permis-

sion to use the term from long time Chic’s Beach native Beetle Bailey

who is one of the original founders of the Low Rent Regatta. Thank

you Beetle!

We are also excited for our new sand that will be coming this summer.

We anticipate it enlarging and beautifying our beachfront significant-

ly.

Our ability to inform our community of what is happening in the

neighborhood has played a significant role in our success. The awe-

some CXB BAY BREEZE newsletter has been a key component in our

ability to inform our community. Thank you to our editor Melissa

Griffith for her tireless work on the newsletter. Our super cool website

www.cxbcivicleague.org has seen unprecedented traffic. Please go

and check it out to see many of our local businesses you can link to

from our site. Our monthly meetings are the 3rd Monday of every

month. We traditionally go to a local establishments to meet so check

our Facebook page: Chesapeake Beach Civic League for each month’s

SAND REPLENISHMENT IS APPROVED AND ON ITS WAY

At our last General Meeting, we had special guest Rommel Tamayo, Water Resources Project Manager for Virginia

Beach Public Works. He was there to update members on the exciting new status of the Sand Replenishment Project

that’s been debated for so long.

Starting in 2010, and ending with a ruling in 2016 that the City “has a right to maintain and protect the beach”, the

City is finally ready to begin replenishing the beach that has been stripped away one storm at a time over many

years.

All that we’re left waiting on are a few environmental permits, but City Officials say that starting mid-April, sand re-

plenishment is coming to Chic’s Beach. The project will start at Lee Avenue and finish at Little Creek, closing public

beach access in phases . The beach will be widened from 100 to 300 feet, making the homes on the bay safe from our

frequent and grueling Nor’Easters while creating an overall better beach experience for the rest of the beach goers.

(We’ve all lost a little something to the Bay’s high tide, right?) Dredging is expected to last for about 6 months and

will bring sand from the various sandbars and tunnel projects from the Bay back to our shores.

Map (Permit Drawing) of the Beach Nourishment Project, found on VMRC Website

Mr. Tamayo was happy to answer questions from members about the project while he had the floor, and offered his

contact information for those with questions. If you have questions, please phone him at 757-385-4511.

CXB LOW RENT 5k

Commonwealth Brewery, JUNE 9, 2018 @ 8:00 AM

TELL ME MORE. Each year, the Chic’s Beach Civic League organizes a 3.1 mile run/walk to raise money and to

promote camaraderie amongst neighbors. The “race” is timed but we encourage everyone of any age or skill level to

participate. The more the merrier! The race costs $35 until 4/1, $40 until 5/20, $45 until 6/8 and then $50 on the

day of the race , which includes your race entry, a finishers medal, a Commonwealth Beer at the finish line, a T-Shirt,

and a SWAG bag full of coupons and giveaways from our generous sponsors.

STRENGTH IN NUMBERS. Call out your friends and family to get out and get moving in our annual neighbor-

hood 5k. There’s plenty of room. Athletes who don’t live in CXB can park at the Chic’s Beach Shopping Center, where

we will provide shuttles to and from the Brewery. Shuttle times are 6:45AM-8AM and 10:45AM-11:15AM. Bad knees?

Don’t want to walk or run? Seeing as how our main streets are closed down, how about volunteering to help? Volun-

teers are needed to put together race packets, check in athletes, man the water stations, and post-race cleanup. This

race is something you can feel good about whether you’re running or volunteering. It’s your community, and the

money benefits it!

WAIT...STREETS ARE WHAT? Closing! Yes, the streets are really closing. Streets will close down from 7:15AM

until 10:15AM…In the past this has been no longer than 30 minutes for the West Side and one hour for the East Side.

CBCL hangs detailed notifications on each door in the community reminding people prior to the event. We ask resi-

dents on the race course to please arrange your schedule so that it doesn’t impact your day. We aren’t trying to be a

burden, we want everyone to be happily informed.

WHAT DOES THE CIVIC LEAGUE DO WITH THE MONEY? Donations are made to Cox High School “All

Night Grad”- A post-graduation program which organizes a “lock-in” event to encourage our teenagers to make good

decisions and prevent drunk-driving. CBCL feels strongly that we should be investing in the safety of our youth. Do-

nations are also made to the Chesapeake Beach Rescue Squad for their help in our community throughout the year.

The rest of the proceeds from the 5k go to benefit the Civic League for community improvement projects, which are

presented to and voted on by members of the CBCL.

INTERESTED? HERE’S WHAT TO DO NEXT: If you want to register to run or walk, follow this link https://

register.chronotrack.com/r/31098 to make it official. Follow our Facebook Event (“CXB Low Rent 5k”) page for discussion

and any new information. If you don’t want to run or walk, but you’re interested in volunteering in ANY capacity,

contact Melissa Pulling at [email protected] to find out what, when, and how. We have a job for you!

NOT SO IN? QUESTIONS OR CONCERNS? If you have questions, contact our Race Director Amy Bouchard at

[email protected] or come to our next Civic League Meeting on April 16 and voice your questions or

concerns.

NOT A RUNNER, NOT A VOLUNTEER, JUST A SPECTATOR...WE LOVE YOU, TOO! If you live along the

race course and you’re going to be home, please pull a few chairs out to the end of your driveway to cheer on the run-

ners and walkers!! A little support goes a long way in both motivation and fun...So go ahead and give a “hoot”!

CXB EATS– GRILLED AVOCADO CAPRESE CROSTINI

KEEP IN TOUCH

Spring is here! Everyone, quick...Celebrate with a pot-luck evening with your neighbors! We love to promote

fellowship, so please enjoy this recipe designed to share with friends old and

new. INGREDIENTS:

• 8 pieces sliced French or Italian ba-

guette, sliced 1/2-inch thick

• 2 tablespoons olive oil

• 1 avocado, sliced thinly

• 9 ounces (250 grams) vine ripened

cherry tomatoes, halved

• 3.5 ounces (100 grams) fresh bocconcini in water (or baby mozza-

rella balls)

• 1/2 cup basil leaves, divided

• 2 tablespoons balsamic glaze

INSTRUCTIONS: Preheat oven to 375°F | 190°C Arrange bread on a baking sheet, drizzle both sides with olive oil and bake for 15 - 20 minutes until golden, flipping toasts midway through to crisp all over. Rub the crostini with the cut side of the garlic while still warm and season with a little salt and pepper. Divide 1/4 cup of the basil leaves on each slice of bread (about 2-3 basil leaves per bread), then top each with the avocado slices, toma-to halves and mozzarella (bocconcini). Season with salt and/or pep-per to taste. Broil (or grill) for 3-5 minutes, or until cheese has started to melt through. Finely chop remaining basil leaves and sprinkle over the crostini. OUT AND ABOUT IN CXB– WAITING ON SUMMER

Then and Now, Bonnie Alexander of East Beach Vet

Every now and then we like to highlight some special moments that have happened

in the community. Please send any pictures you have to newslet-

CARE

Written by Dr. Bonnie Alexander

My grandfather built our beloved

beach house in the early 1950’s. He

purchased our bay-front property for a

mere $1800, but for a pipefitter at the

Shipyard, that was quite a bit of cash!

I grew up in Williamsburg, and was

fortunate enough to have spent sum-

mer weekends at Chic’s in the 60’s and

70’s. Chic’s is where I learned to swim,

fish, and yes, even surf! Several family

members, to include myself have lived

in the house off and on for the past 35

years. Now a veterinarian and owner

of East Beach Veterinary Care, I’ve

settled back in to our newly renovated

beach house with my husband (ret.

Msgt. USMC) and dachshund (by de-

fault). We moved back to the area in

2011 after spending time in Beaufort,

SC and northern VA. I had had my eye

on the East Beach area of Norfolk for

years thinking it would be a great loca-

tion for a veterinary practice, and

when we moved back to Chic’s in 2011,

I began working on my vision. I

opened my practice June of 2012, and

business is booming! So much so (and

thanks to all of the local support), we

are breaking ground on our new stand

-alone facility on Shore Drive in the

next couple of weeks.

The current location of East Beach

Veterinary Care and Housecalls is

3841 E Little Creek Rd, STE L.

Our new location, hopefully by the end

of this year, will be 9650 Shore Dr, in

front of the East Beach, Norfolk,

neighborhood.

Owners Teddy and Terri Russell

are long time residents of Chic’s

Beach. Teddy Russell spent

many days growing up on our

beaches while his father owned

and operated Allen’s Grille

which is now where HK on the

Bay is located. Terri Russell

moved here from Maryland and

resided on Ocean View Avenue

in her early twenties. As fate

would have it, they met in Chic’s

Beach and soon were married.

Ted and Terri worked together

to open their own full service

spring and driveshaft shop.

Their dream was realized in

1989 when they established

Spring Menders.

Spring Menders, Inc. is a minor-

ity owned, full service suspen-

sion and driveline shop. They

have highly skilled mechanics

with a combined 50+ years ex-

perience working on all types of

trucks, buses, and heavy vehi-

cles. They stock a complete line

of new springs, leaves, shackles,

pins, bushings, hangers, tie-rod,

king pins and airbags for most

trucks and trailers. Honest

quotes, fair pricing and timely

service are part of their custom-

er focused business practices.

Spring Menders has worked on

How do you run? Whether you run fast or slow, short or long, in good weather or bad,

with dogs, with friends, with children, alone, on a full stomach or nearly starving, look-

ing sharp in fancy shoes or choosing the crappy favorite sneakers from college, running

the beach or the streets the best end result is that it fuels your spirit. Of course, most of

us know the benefits of running, it is among the best aerobic exercises for the physical

conditioning of your heart and lungs. Another best thing about running is that you can

do it anywhere. The best thing about the CXB Low Rent Run is it’s right outside your

front door. So why not join the family friendly fun run (or walk, as I do)?

The CXB Low Rent Run is a community civic league fund raiser to help the Chesapeake

Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad, the Cox High School All Night Graduation Celebration

and the many projects the civic league does throughout the year.

The Chesapeake Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad is part of the Virginia Beach communi-

ty, which has the largest volunteer-based EMS system in the nation. I had the privilege

to be graciously toured around our new fire station by Tanya Barnes, one of the Volun-

teer Rescue team. I was overwhelmed by the ambulances, equipment, medical supplies,

and the training that are funded by donations. The money that is donated to the Rescue

Squad allows for prehospital emergency medical care to Virginia Beach residents and

visitors ABSOLUTELY FREE! Astoundingly, they offer the community services and

equipment at NO CHARGE.

...But it is worth noting what the cost would be without donations:

$475. ambulance transport

$45,000 LifePak 15 Monitor/Defibrillator

$350 spinal immobilization equipment

$165 oxygen bottle and regulator

and many more dollars to keep Band-Aids, gauze, gloves, etc.

Another life saving event is The All Night Graduation Celebration at Cox High School.

This is a special night for our Seniors to have the time of their lives, in a safe, sober and

FUN environment. For many graduates, this ALL - NITE party on the Spirit of Norfolk,

Midnight Cruise will be their last time together with their fellow students. This is a 100%

parent volunteer group that organizes and helps fund this event.

People choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons. Whether volunteering is to give

something back to the community or make a difference to the neighbors around them,

the Chesapeake Beach Civic League is fortunate to have many of these special volun-

teers. The primary goal and interest of the CBCL is the improvement and quality of life

in our neighborhood. Our volunteers are behind the scenes selflessly doing a great many

things: staying on top of neighborhood issues; sidewalks, flooding, traffic congestion and

speeding, lake testing, Little Free Libraries, dog waste boxes, erosion, sand replenish-

ment, fund raising, having a voice in local government and issues. Our non-profit organ-

ization is open to all residents of Chic’s Beach, whether you rent or own. Our civic league

is committed to the continued support of the efforts of the professional, compassionate

care by the certified EMTs and Paramedics, the PTSA of Cox High School for their tire-

less work on the All Night Graduation Celebration and the affairs of our community.

So lace up your sneakers and hit the road with your neighbors

and fuel your spirit!

CHESAPEAKE BEACH RESCUE SQUAD You know that when you make the call, they show up. You know that they

light up the streets during emergencies. You know that they are a pillar in the community, from checking carseats to dressing up as Santa for the Holi-

days...But did you know that Rescue Squad Volunteer members, from EMT to paramedic, commit to the same training and certifications as professional res-

cue teams? These volunteers agree to serve 48 hours a month, usually broken up in four 12-hour duties.

In the City of Virginia Beach, there are 165 Volunteer Members, donating over 82,000 of service each year.

...Because of them, 450,980 Virginia Beach Residents can receive free pre-hospital emergency care.

We want to take a moment to showcase our own Chesapeake Beach Volunteer Rescue Squad (CBVRS4), to acknowledge their work and participation in keep-

ing our community safe and healthy.

THANK YOU, CHESAPEAKE BEACH RESCUE SQUAD,

from all of us in CXB.

Here’s to hoping that we never NEED you, but knowing if we do– You’re there!

PRIDE IN COMMUNITY

AWARDS

The temperature is rising and

people are starting to peek their

heads out of their front doors. We

want to honor those who take ad-

vantage of this warm-up by get-

ting out and making us proud!

Chic’s Beach is a beautiful com-

munity in it’s own right, but what

makes a community really special

is each family’s unique ability to

shape it. Spring is the perfect

time to make your house sparkle

and your yard burst full of color.

There is no better season to show

off the homes we work so hard to

own and maintain than Spring.

The Pride in Community Awards

are given to four families– two on

the East Side and two on the

West Side of the neighborhood.

The Awards come in the form of a

flag to place proudly in your yard,

as well as a shoutout in the news-

letter and website. These Awards

are designed to encourage and

recognize our residents’ hard

work and dedication to the beau-

tification of Chic’s Beach. Factors

include the overall appearance,

neatness of the property,

trimmed and shaped foliage,

edged lawns, borders and flower

beds, and any seasonal decora-

tions are a bonus.

We are looking for individuals

whose homes are inviting and

creative– representative of our

community in whole.

So get out there and make

us proud, CXB!!

MEMBERSHIP MINUTE

9

New year, new card! We want to take this Membership Minute to chat with you about

the changes to your 2018 membership card. Previously, your membership card had

printed detailed information about discounts you receive by showing the card to local

businesses. Here’s the bad news– That’s gone. Here’s the great news...It’s gone be-

cause we have SO MANY discounts, we couldn’t possibly keep putting them on the

card. Our solution for this was replacing the list with a QR Code.

If you’re unfamiliar with how to work a QR code, you’re not alone.

Step 1: Get a QR Code Reader App (They’re Free– And new iPhones already have it

installed) by downloading it on your phone from your app store.

Step 2: Open the app, center the camera over your QR code

Step 3: The app takes you to our CBCL Member Discounts Page

It’s THAT easy! Once you download the app, you have it until you choose to delete it,

if ever. It works with any QR Code you come across, and takes you directly to the re-

spective webpage.

When you visit one of the listed businesses, simply show them that you are a 2018

member of the Civic League and they will apply your discount. If there is any confu-

sion (i.e.– A new employee), simply scan your QR code to bring up the discounts

page, and show them where they’ve committed to offering the discount to members.

If you have paid your dues (remember– a membership is for the CALENDAR YEAR)

but haven’t received your new card, please shoot us an email so we can get it to you.

Join online at www.cxbcivicleague.org or in person at our next meeting every third Monday @7pm at

Commonwealth Brewing Company.

CXB CLEAN UP

CLEAN THE BEACH. EARN REWARDS. MAKE YOUR BEACH A BETTER BEACH.

The Millikens havmade news lately for their grassroots “Better Beach Project”. Brad and his wife came

up with the idea to partner up with local businesses to offers discounts and rewards in return for bring-

ing them trash...Not even kidding. It’s that easy. How it works:

1. Fill a 16 oz. container with broken glass, rusty bottle caps, plastic, or other litter you

find on the beach.

2. Bring the full container to a participating local business and exchange it for a reward.

3. The business will dump the beach garbage, then return the container to you along with

your reward.

4. Repeat!

Here are the participating businesses:

American Brew, Cape Henry Lighthouse, Chesapeake Bay Distillery, Coastal Edge Surf Shops, Commonwealth Brewing Company, The Coop Food Truck, Deadline Brewing Project, Ebbing Tides Stand Up Paddleboards, Fathom Coffee, Free-

dom Surf Shop, Froggie's Cantina, Fruitive, Funcfit VB, Happy at Home Pet Care, Harmony Dental Group, HK on the Bay, I Scream Ice Cream, iFly VA Beach, Java Surf Coffee & Espresso Bar, Keepers of the Ocean, Memory Lane Old Time Photos, Pleasure House Brewing, Press Wine Bar, Pungo Board House, Reaver Beach Brewing Company, Reed Manning
