BABY SIGNS- SIGN, SING, AND PLAY CLASSESEvery Thursday, 0900-0930Last Frontier Community Activity Center, Bldg 1044

Hands on parent and child classes that are designed to improve communication with young children. Families will learn signs through song and play– keeping it fun for everyone! This basic signing series of 12 classes will be offered on a rotating basis and is appropriate for families with children 9 months through 5 years. Join us for one or for all of the classes. Classes are free. Parent kits available for purchase.

This hands on workshop will teach you the tips, tricks and guidelines of introducing solid foods to your infant. Topics discussed will cover general nutrition guidelines, when to introduce different types of foods, allergies and reactions in your child to watch for, several methods of preparing and storing your own baby food with hands on practice, and the do’s and don’ts of infant feeding. Participants will receive a food mill and a collection of baby food recipes.

COMMUNITY CPR AND FIRST AID CERTIFICATIONSep 20 1700-2100Feb 17 1730-2130CDC I, Bldg 4024

This four hour class will cover infant, child and adult CPR as well as First Aid techniques. Participants will receive their American Heart Association Certification for successful completion of this program. Please bring your lunch with you.

Winters in interior Alaska are very cold! Don’t let the snow keep you and your child bored inside. In this interactive class you and your child will learn how to bring the outside into your home. Participants’ will learn how to do physical activities while staying warm inside and fighting away the winter blues.

Have you ever bought a toy for your child and and they played with the box the toy came in more than the toy? In this interactive class you and your child can make toys and activities that will keep them busy for hours! Participants will learn how to take basic items and transform them into hours of educational entertainment for your child.

Stress management starts with identifying the sources of stress in your life. This isn’t as easy as it sounds when it comes to being a parent. The key to good stress management is building emotional strength, being in control of your situation, having a good social network and adopting a positive outlook. “Distressing Techniques/Coping Mechanisms for Families” class will help you to identify stressors and coping mechanisms.

Did you know that young children are more prone to develop hypothermia (lowered body temperature)? When winter storms in, it's your job to make sure your child stays warm and dry. This class will help identify the basic elements of dressing your child for cold weather.

This class is designed to help parents work more cooperatively and effectively with one another while focusing on what is in the best interest of their child/children. This class will assist in separating their personal conflicts from their roles as step-parents. We will cover topics such as talking to children about divorce/separation, visitation boundaries, parenting with the child in mind and responsibility of co-parenting. This class will also provide valuable skills in balancing marriage, children and parenting partnerships.

Food experiences in early childhood have an effect on eating habits in adulthood. In this class we will help you to identify a variety of nutritious foods and snacks for your young child. This class can help set the foundation for good health throughout life.

1-2-3 Magic is a humorous look at parenting and a serious look at discipline developed by Thomas W. Phelan, Ph.D. Participants will learn how to discipline without arguing, yelling, or spanking; how to control obnoxious behavior; how to handle the six kinds of testing and manipulation; how to use the five tactics for encouraging good behavior; how to end battles over bedtime, messy rooms, lying, chores, homework, and practicing; how to strengthen their relationships with their children and more.
