Eden Prairie applies forcounty youth sports grantsWould split costs for threeparks’ improvements BY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS

The Eden Prairie BaseballAssociation and the city of Eden Prairieare applying for $180,500 in youth countysports grants, available thanks to con-struction of the Twins’ Target Field twoyears ago.

Legislation that approved the stadi-um’s construction also called to awardup to $2 million per grant cycle for coun-tywide youth sports programs. Thereare 17 years remaining in the 20-yeargrant allocation period, said EdenPrairie Parks and Recreation DirectorJay Lotthammer.

The grant dollars are availablethrough the Hennepin Youth SportsProgram, which matches half of anapplicant’s proposed project.

Eden Prairie is submitting threeapplications. They are for improve-ments at Miller Park, Franlo Park andCummins Grill ball field at Staring Lake

Park. The city is applying for $140,000, half

the cost to light all the soccer-footballfields at Miller Park.

Lotthammer said pressure to lightthe full-sized fields for traveling teamshas been growing since the fields werefirst constructed in 1992. They are usedfrom May to October, and lights wouldmake scheduling games easier.

The other $140,000 would come fromthe Capital Improvement Programs, abudget that already includes the lights’installation. The youth sports grantcould lighten that financial burden.

As the grant program requires, EdenPrairie Baseball Association is goingthrough the city to hand in two grantapplications. One is to install coveredplayer benches and batting cages atFranlo Park. The grant would cover halfoff the estimated $38,000 project. Thebaseball association would pay for theother half.

The second project calls for coveredbenches at the Cummins Grill baseballfield. The baseball association and coun-ty would split the $43,000 cost as well.

City takes stock ininvasive speciessusceptibilityBY PAUL GROESSEL – SUN NEWSPAPERS

For now, Eden Prairie’s waters areclear of the invasive zebra mussel, butthe city could take a little extra stock inits lake-monitoring process.

The city may keep a closer eye on itswaters and step up prevention effortssince zebra mussels were discovered inLake Minnetonka two years ago.

“I think that whole [Lake]Minnetonka scenario is the one peopleare fairly concerned about,” said EdenPrairie Parks and Recreation DirectorJay Lotthammer during a March 6 citycouncil meeting. “ … They’re able to beattached to things very easily and that’sone of the methods in how they spread.”

Zebra mussels are invertebratesnative to Russia that attach to hard sur-faces such as boats, water pipes, docks, rocks and plants. They can cause prob-lems for boaters, anglers, lakeside home-owners, beachgoers and a lakes’ foodchain. They were first discovered in theGreat Lakes in 1988, but two years agowas the first time they were documentedin Hennepin County waters.

Lotthammer said the environmentaldivision of the city will have a regularwater assessment take place this spring. For little added cost, they can analyzethe lakes’ vulnerability to hosting zebramussels. Depending on nutrient leveland temperature of lake, zebra musselsmay not survive if lake conditions arenot right, Lotthammer said.

The city also staff the boat launch atRiley Lake, mostly as supervision andtraffic control for boats coming in andout of the lake. Lotthammer said thecity could step up staff ’s training, sothey can identify or inspect for zebra

mussels. If nothing else, they could pos-sibly hand out materials with informa-tion on zebra mussels, Lotthammer said.

There are several boat launches inEden Prairie, including Lake Riley,Mitchell Lake, Lake Smetana, Red RockLake and Bryant Lake.

It’s against the law to transport waterinfected with invasive species, and theDNR can examine boat hulls, swimmingplatforms and docks for aquatic plants.

Zebra mussels were discovered sum-mer 2010 in east Lake Minnetonka. Atthe end of 2011, a Minnehaha CreekWatershed District study reported thatzebra mussels began moving westward.Concentrations were also higher in theeastern section of the lake.

Once established in a lake, theybecome permanent residents, so pre-venting them from spreading is the bestoption.

That’s not easy or cheap. LakeMinnetonka in particular is one of themost popular boating and recreationlakes in the state.

The Minnesota Department ofNatural resources commissioned astudy last year to estimate costs forincreasing preventative options acrossthe state. Cost estimates outlined in thereport, released in February, range from$6 million per year for privatized inspec-tions conducted in 55 areas alreadyinfected with zebra mussels to a “notfeasible” option with a $610 million peryear price tag. That option wouldinvolve required inspections at 3,600lakeside sites across the state.

The DNR does offer grants to localgovernments for prevention and aware-ness efforts. But, last year in theMinnesota Legislature a House bill thatwould have increased funding to fightthe spread of zebra mussels didn’t makeit to the floor for a vote.

It would have provided a fundingincrease of $4 million a year and author-ized the DNR to provide more watercraft

inspections and enforcement. The billwould have increased penalties for viola-tions and requiring training and permit-ting for lake service providers.

Similar legislation was introduced inFebruary.

Since not much can be done oncezebra mussels settle in a body of water, the best the city can do is prepare, add toprevention efforts and spread the word,Lotthammer said.

It showed that drugs are talked aboutmore with parents and seem more dan-gerous and taboo at a young age butthose impressions dampen as studentsgo through high school, particularlywith alcohol use.

“By the time they hit 12th grade, theydon’t see it as an overly risky behavior asthey might have [previously],” Houcksaid.

As expected, as students get olderthey use illegal substances more. Littlemore than half of 12th graders who tookthe survey reported they had an alcoholwithin the previous year, while approxi-mately 85 percent of 9th graders saidthey had alcohol within the previousyear.

But, reported binge drinking hasreduced slightly since 2004, according tosurvey results.

Around 7 percent of 9th graders and21 percent of 12th graders reported theyhad used marijuana within 30 days priorto taking the survey.

After going through the surveyresults, panelists talked about how par-ents can influence their children, talk –and more importantly listen – to their

children so they hopefully make theirown wise decisions.

“Parents have a lot of influence andkids listen to us,” said panelist AnitaGibson.

Addiction is more of a health issue

than it is a moral issue, said panelistMaureen Farrell.

Issues can occur if addiction takesplace while the brain is developing. Amature brain can take 5-15 years to cre-ate an addiction. In an adolescent, devel-

oping brain, it can take 5-15 months toform an addiction. Neuron connectionsinvolving substances can be formed inmore direct routes than a mature brain,

making addictive patterns easier toform, she said.

An audience member asked how par-ents could talk about the dangers of sub-stance use with their child withoutsounding hypocritical.

Randy Thompson, a Central MiddleSchool counselor and former police offi-cer said even though it sounds cliché,students truly are growing up in a differ-ent, more complex time than their par-ents’ high school years.

“Times are different now than backwhen we were young,” Thompson said.

Marijuana wasn’t as potent; thereweren’t as many distractions and highschool students face a lot more pressurenow than their parents did during theirformative years.

“There are so many things that aredifferent about today,” Thompson said.

Gibson said to be careful with bound-aries as well. Too much informationabout parents’ past can’t be helpful whentrying to promote good decisions.Children are too young to hear aboutsome things that parents did growing up.

When should parents start talking totheir children about substance use?

Panelists said when students start ask-ing about it, and specifically, Thompsonsaid starting in 5th grade is not tooyoung.

And, parents messages to studentsneed to continue as students age,Thompson said. Parents should notassume that the messages were drovehome since they started early.

“It’s gotta be over, and over and overagain,” Thompson said. Even when par-

ents get sick of saying it, they have tokeep saying it.

That doesn’t mean being forceful orclosed minded. Panelists said it’s impor-tant to let students talk and let themknow they’re heard. Parents should notmerely solve their child’s problems orpunish them. That could make theirchild listen to and talk with someoneelse, which can be risky.

CURRENT

OUR VIEWPOINT

Time is now to vote on the stadium billMinnesotans say they treasure the

Minnesota Vikings football team, but theydon’t want to help pay for a new stadium tokeep them.

That’s the dilemma for the MinnesotaLegislature that keeps stalling, hoping theycan put this decision off until after theNovember elections.

Meanwhile, the Vikings insist they wanta new $975 million stadium and are willingto pay more than $427 million of the cost, aslong as someone else pays the remaining$548 million.

The central question, however, is not howto pay for it and where to put it. The bottomline is: How important is the Viking team tothe quality of life of Minnesotans? If theconsensus of the people is to keep theVikings because they add so much value tothe state’s quality of life, then all the peopleshould help pay for a new stadium that willkeep them here.

This burden should not fall onMinneapolis residents alone through thearray of taxes they pay now for facilitieslike Target Field, the MinneapolisConvention Center and Target Center.

Nor should it fall on only those whowould pay for electronic pull-tabs, as pro-posed in the latest stadium plan. The latest

plan calls for a $975 million stadium east ofthe Metrodome in Minneapolis. It would befinanced by $427 million by the Vikings, $150million by Minneapolis through sales andluxury taxes and $398 million by state-runelectronic-pull-tabs.

This plan still has to be approved by areluctant Minnesota Legislature andMinneapolis City Council, who fear thebacklash from those who question theVikings deal when compared to the state’sneed to close a budget deficit, to pay for $2.1billion in withheld payments to school dis-tricts and to fund human services.

Since this issue has dragged on for 10years and a plan has been put together forthe Legislature, this is the session to vote itup or down. Waiting won’t lead to a bettersolution. Minnesotans want to believe theVikings will never leave for a city with amodern stadium.

Don’t they recall how the state lost itsNBA franchise the Minneapolis Lakers toLos Angeles and the Minnesota North StarsNHL hockey team to Dallas? Have they for-gotten how the state fought and regainednew hockey and basketball franchises byhaving to build Target Center and the XcelCenter?

A major policy question is: should the

state continue to fund entertainment venuesfor its residents with local and state taxes? Why not?

There’s state and local tax dollars in theXcel Center in St. Paul, Target Field inMinneapolis, the National Sports Center inBlaine, the Guthrie Theater in Minneapolis, the Mall of America in Bloomington andthe TCF Bank Stadium on the University ofMinnesota campus.

The most recent case of public financingis Target Field in Minneapolis where thereis a 0.15 percent sales tax paying two-thirdsof the cost. People are raving about this sta-dium, even as they help pay for it when theybuy something in Hennepin County.

A consensus is developing that keepingthe Vikings maintains the state’s quality oflife and a stadium plan is on the table.

Let’s vote.

A message from the Eden Prairie School BoardAs elected members of the

Eden Prairie School Board, weare accountable to you, the com-munity members of EdenPrairie. Our posted board meet-ings and workshops are all opento the public, and agendas andminutes can be found on thenewly designed district websiteat edenpr.org.

In addition, we want to com-municate directly to you fromtime to time with updates aboutour work and our goals. What fol-lows is an overview of our activi-ties during these first busymonths of 2012.

In January, we each took theoath of office. We elected newofficers, formed new governance,

finance and connections commit-tees, voted to decrease our pay to$400 per month and made thedecision to recite the Pledge ofAllegiance at the beginning ofevery board meeting.

We made a site visit to OakPoint, met with DecisionResources to give directionregarding the community sur-veys they conducted for us, heardfrom School Exec Connect on theresults of the superintendentsurvey and focus groups and col-laborated with the interim super-intendent, Jon McBroom, to setpriorities for the remainingmonths of the school year.

These priorities includerebuilding relationships with the

community and staff, ensuringthat progress toward academicgoals is being made, gatheringinformation on enrollment andfacilities usage and reviewingour district finances.

In February, we heard anupdate on Kids EdVenture, thedistrict’s before- and after-schoolprogram that is currently beingpiloted at upper and lower cam-pus Spanish Immersion and OakPoint, and we voted to extendthat pilot program for an addi-tional year.

We changed our governancepolicies to use the word“Superintendent” instead of“CEO” to achieve better clarity, and we reached out to every fam-

ily with kids who left the districtlast year and invited them toattend sessions to share theirfeedback with us.

A professional demographerpresented us with a capture ratestudy, which included historicaland projected enrollment infor-mation for Eden Prairie Schools.Superintendent McBroom gaveus information on current andpast enrollment at every site, var-ious enrollment projections forthe future and building capaci-ties. We also received an updateon district finances with respectto fund balances, revenue andexpenditures.

In March, we are conducting superin-tendent interviews and will be choosingour new superintendent. Outreach to vari-ous stakeholder groups will continue. Wewill begin to analyze the data we have col-lected and compare the results of theboundary changes and K-6 transformationto the stated goals. We will look at the feed-back and suggestions we have receivedand discuss ways to implement improve-ments.

While there is much to be proud of in

Eden Prairie Schools, we also know thatmany of you continue to have concernsabout some of the changes that have takenplace over the last few years. We recognizethat a number of your concerns stem froma need to receive answers to questions, data supporting the changes, a long-termplan and accurate information about theimpact of district changes on our studentsand the district budget.

The Board does not believe it wasappropriate to broadly attribute concernsto a fear of change or racism. We are work-ing hard to collaborate with parents, teach-ers and administrative staff, and are listen-ing very carefully so we can address theissues that are being raised and make con-

tinuous improvements to our schools. The Board is confident that when we

select our new superintendent, focus onsuperior academic offerings for studentsacross all spectrums and exhibit goodstewardship of your taxpayer dollars, wewill be able to strengthen the excellent rep-utation that Eden Prairie Schools has tra-ditionally enjoyed.

The Eden Prairie School Board

The school board is comprised of RaneeJacobus (chair), John Estall (vice-chair),Holly Parker (clerk), Chuck Mueller (trea-surer), Karla Bratrud (director), Dave Espe(director) and Suzanne Kutina (director).

My name is Paul Moore, owner of RightWay Painting Solutions. As a degreedindustrial arts teacher with years of experi-ence in home repair and finishing, mypromise to you is trusted, quality service.Right Way is a member of the BetterBusiness Bureau in good standing, with anA-rating. We also possess a 5-star ratingwith Service Magic. But I’m more thanjust an owner. I work at the job site toensure your project is handled profession-ally and with the highest level of customerservice possible.

With spring quickly approaching, now isthe time to assess your home and deter-mine what projects will help protect yourinvestment and enhance its value. Butdoing your homework in advance can saveyou a lot of headaches. Like most home-owners I need to do several projects on theoutside of my house. I will need to hire alandscaper to improve my property.Finding the right contractor can be a chal-lenge.

Do some research--When hiring anycontractor it’s always desirable to keep itlocal. Good contractors will offer refer-ences from clients near or in your commu-nity. But make sure that they personallyperform the work. Many contractors willsell or subcontract the work out to some-one else, especially if they are too busy orcan do so for a lower cost. These subcon-tractors may not have the experience thatyou need and they may not be insured.Trust is a major component between con-tractor and customer. Failure to researchthe best contractors who are trustworthycan lead to major disappointment.

Don’t make this mistake--In 2010, I solda lake cabin in Park Rapids, Minn. Afterhaving my boat repaired at a Park Rapidsbusiness, I had them put the boat up forsale, on consignment. After makingnumerous calls throughout the year, I was

told the boat still had not sold. Some timelater I discovered that the boat had actual-ly been sold six months earlier and themoney was never sent to me. The moral ofthe story? Conduct business with peoplethat are trustworthy, local and will standby their work.

Don’t get lost in the maze--In the paint-ing business, there are many contractors tochoose from, but few will be able to offerthe level of workmanship and service thatis provided by Right Way PaintingSolutions. A quick Internet search willreveal an estimated 80 painting contractorsthroughout the area from which to choose. An estimated 50 of them are located morethan 50 miles from the Minneapolis area.Another 20 of them are building contrac-tors that offer their services as non-profes-sional painters, perhaps as a way to sup-plement their lack of work in construction. This is why the consumer must be diligentin choosing the right painter with experi-ence and knowledge.

Our promise to you--I’m Paul Mooreand I own Right Way Painting Solutions ofRichfield. I live here and my local compa-ny has painted hundreds of homes in theRichfield, Bloomington, Edina and theEden Prairie area for years. Our work is ondisplay every day and we’d be proud towork with you on your next project.

Special spring savings—We’re offeringtremendous saving this spring on yourprojects. We are currently offering 20 per-cent off on all of our outside work includ-ing painting, repairs and deck staining. Wehandle interior and exterior painting, repairs to your home’s surfaces andreplacement of wood surfaces where need-ed. Latest method for fighting AIS includes organizingGrants available to formnew lake associationsBY CHRIS DILLMANN – SUN NEWSPAPERS

For concerned citizens or those thatjust want to get more involved, grantopportunities are available to formnew lake associations.

Made possible through a partner-ship between Minnesota Waters andMinnehaha Creek Watershed District, the “Watershed Association Initiative”is beginning its sixth year of grants.

With more than 120 lakes inHennepin County, ProgramCoordinator with Minnesota Waters,Alex Gehrig, says the more the merri-er.

“We’d love to see a citizen-basedorganization on every one of thoselakes,” Gehrig said.

The program provides mini-grantsof $500 to organize.

“Sometimes there are just thosecosts associated with forming agroup,” Gehrig said. “You want to put

on a community event, and will need toapply for a nonprofit status with thestate, you’ll need a little bit of cash toget moving.”

Once established, the MemberMatch Fund matches member dues anddonations up to $1,000 to help fund theprojects.

The formation of lake associationsis to help fight the spread of AquaticInvasive Species and to help protectwater quality. And all it takes is threeto five people to want to make a differ-ence.

“Usually a group of people that hasthings in common with the lake thatyou like about it and you would want todo for it,” Gehrig said.

How to form anassociation

A Steering Committee is thenformed where Gehrig says he becomesinvolved. They then develop a talkingpoint on what’s common within thegroup, taking the ideas to the commu-nity and holding community meetings.

After that, they would then file for non-profit status, where they then couldbegin the action planning.

As more AIS make their way towardmetro waters, communications direc-tor with MCWD Telly Mamayek saysit’s more imperative than ever to getcitizen involvement.

“The formation of lake associationsare ways for citizens to becomeinvolved to advocate for their lake andbe active in water quality issues,”Mamayek said. “Anytime we can workwith an engaged citizen group it is amore effective way of doing what wecan to improve the water resource andwater quality.”

As AIS continue to become more apart of life, Mamyek says they are see-ing a lot more citizen interest in lakesand their issues.

This was seen when a group ofthree lake associations, including theChristmas Lake Association, began agrassroots effort to stop the spread of

zebra mussels into their clean lakes.Advocating checkpoints and an accessgate, they wanted to do what it takes tostop zebra mussels from entering thelakes.

Mamayek agrees in the sense thatthe state can’t do it alone and it willtake a team effort to protect the bodiesof water.

“Active citizens are a tremendousaspect in this effort for AIS,” Mamayeksaid. On the ground, grassroots workis the backbone of the work to protectthe bodies of water.

Gehrig says people want to do some-thing but they are not sure exactlywhere to go.

“We want to make sure citizens havethose resources so that they can takethat positive action,” Gehrig said.

For those interested in forming alake association or want to obtainmore information, they can contactAlex Gehrig at 651-278- 7117 or visitingminnehahacreek.org.

$50 per month, but that would be for a“Wal-Mart” sized business, accordingto Director of Public Works RobertEllis.

The fees would be split between gasand electric bills, $2.50 on each for resi-dential properties. Revenue from resi-dential and business fees would coverthe $2 million that will be needed annu-ally (not including inflation) to keepthe city’s aging roads in good condi-tion.

Roadways have a 20-year lifespanwithout maintenance work. Seal coat-ing, mill and overlay and other tech-niques can double that expectancy.

“We do expect to see 40 years from allof our streets,” Ellis said during aJanuary workshop.

The city roads’ average age is 20years and maintenance requirementsare going from seal coating to the moreexpensive and in-depth mill and over-

lay, Ellis said at the last meeting. The current condition of the roads

can be maintained, however, by doinglong-term maintenance work.

“We have a very aggressive mainte-nances schedule,” Ellis said.

The city wants to keep residents andbusinesses informed and spread theword before they hit utility bills, whichcould happen in August.

“This is kind of the beginning of anengagement process,” City ManagerRick Getschow told the city council. The city has planned neighborhoodmeetings, a town hall meeting andsome public hearings.

The next open house will be 6 p.m.Thursday, March 15 in Heritage Rooms1 and 3, in the lower level of EdenPrairie’s City Center.

Staff and the city council have beenlooking at road maintenance costs andplans for a year. Like many cities, EdenPrairie did not have a funding sourcefor long-term road maintenance.

Former, long-time Public WorksDirector Gene Dietz told the city coun-cil last May that annual road and trail

work eats up $2 million in the capitalimprovement fund, used for roadwork, trails and other maintenance costsexceeding $25,000.

In recent years, little money hadgone into the fund and it was facing adeficit by 2015, which is why the citycouncil had the citizen-led BudgetAdvisor Commission look into fundingoptions for street repairs, including thefranchise fee proposal.

“I really think that Eden Prairie is atthat point where every dollar you spendnow is going to save you $4 ten yearsfrom now, and if you wait too long thechoices are very expensive,” Ellis said.

The BAC was charged with derivingthe best options for roadway mainte-nance funding, which isn’t part of cityproperty taxes.

“One thing [the BAC] did not look at... was special assessments,” Ellis saidin January, since it could have cost$4,000 to $10,000 per property owner, once the maintenance and repair workcame in front of the taxpayer’s home.

“It would create a lot of consterna-tions from the public if we decided to

do special assessments,” Ellis said. The BAC is recommending flat fran-

chise fees to the city council becausethey’re fair, easy to understand andExcel and CenterPoint Energy arealready billing houses and businesses,so there would be little administrativework for the city.

“Franchise fees is simply charging afee for the benefit of access to the city’sright of way,” Ellis said.

The city allows the energy compa-nies right-of-way to install utilitiesunder city roadways, rather than hav-ing energy companies go to each prop-erty owner to receive right of way fromindividual properties.

BAC also considered street lightmaintenance fees, garbage haulingfees, cell phone tower fees, fees chargedto water and sewer and tax levyincreases.

The BAC thought flat fees would bethe most equitable since house or lotsize does not determine how often road-ways are used, especially since olderconstructions tend to be smaller thannewer homes, Ellis said.

Eden Prairie rally falls short in girls basketball finalsEagles lose 50-46 to Edina in Class 4A,Section 2 title game BY GREG KLEVEN – SUN NEWSPAPERS

Edina and Eden Prairie are LakeConference girls basketball rivals andvery familiar with each other.

The Hornets and Eagles met twiceduring the regular season and split apair of games.

However, Edina won the season serieswith EP and earned a berth in thisweek’s state Class 4A tournament with ahard-fought 50-46 victory over EdenPrairie in the Section 2 finals March 9 atHopkins Lindbergh Center.

Top-seeded Edina (25-4) avenged a lossto second-seeded Eden Prairie (22-6) inlast year’s section championship game.

The Hornets are the second seed inthe state 4A tournament and were sched-uled to play Duluth East (22-5) in thequarterfinals March 14 at Target Center.

Edina coach Matt Nilsen knows EdenPrairie’s personnel so well that he real-ized Hornet leads of 23-17 at halftimeand 34-23 six minutes into the secondhalf were not safe.

“We were up by 10 points in the sec-ond half and I was expecting a run fromEden Prairie,” said Nilsen. “EdenPrairie started shooting well and wefound ourselves down by one point in thefinal minutes.

“But we didn’t stop fighting and heldour composure. We came right down thecourt and regained the lead after EdenPrairie went ahead.”

Edina led 48-44 with 10 secondsremaining in regulation after senior for-ward Lindsey Johnson’s field goal.

However, Eden Prairie’s ShayneMullaney scored to cut the deficit to 48-46with 2.9 seconds left. Edina senior guardKatybeth Biewen made two free throwsto clinch the victory.

Junior guard M.C. McGrory andJohnson led Edina with 17 points each.McGrory scored 14 points in the secondhalf.

Edina’s defense did a good job shut-ting down Eden Prairie’s All-State stand-outs, forward Jackie Johnson and guardShayne Mullaney. Both seniors are head-ed to the University of Minnesota nextseason to play for the Gophers.

Mullaney averaged 17.6 points dur-ing regular-season play and Johnsonscored about 15 points per game.

However, the Hornets defense limit-ed Mullaney to nine points andJohnson to eight points in the sectionfinal.

Eden Prairie’s other point produc-ers were Cassy Saxton (nine points),Annie Thul (seven), Martha Kuderer(seven), Carley Tibbetts (four) andSamantha Trammel (three).

“We tried to focus defensively onstopping Mullaney and Johnson anddid a good job of that,” said Nilsen.

Edina’s Lindsey Johnson wasn’tsurprised by her team’s section cham-pionship performance.

“Eden Prairie is a fantastic team, but our players stepped up and playeda great game,” said the Hornets’Johnson. “Our team never gets downand stays poised.”

Eden Prairie reached the sectionfinals by defeating BloomingtonKennedy 65-51 in the section semifi-nals March 3.

The Eagles opened the playoffs witha 62-41 victory over BloomingtonJefferson in the quarterfinals.

KENNEDY

Josh Fremder is in his second year in Rhythm In Gold Show Choir. He is a very talented performer and continually works to become better. Josh posesses a great work ethic and gives his all in rehearsal. He has also played a huge part in behind the scenes work, as he’s managed sound systems, packed trailers and fixed equipment. He is an outstanding example of teamwork for the rest of the choir.

Jade is a junior at Kennedy and is an

excellent student with a 3.6 GPA. She is a captain on the Kennedy girls basketball team who won the South Suburban Conference title this year. She has verbally committed to go to Georgetown on Basketball scholarship after her high school career. She works very hard at basketball and at school. She is a pleasure to coach and has been a productive member of the Kennedy girls basketball team.
