The Dalby Speech Eisteddfod will commence on Thursday 8th

August, followed by Instrumental on Monday 12th April to Friday

There are a number of students involved in the OptiMindsChallenge. Thank you to teachers and teacher aides who have

volunteered to support our school teams that will travel toGatton for the Regional OptiMinds challenge. This event allowsour students the opportunity to visit Gatton Campus whichis part of the Queensland University. OptiMinds encouragesstudents to think creatively and enhances comprehension andhigh order thinking skills.

Learning WalksLearning Walks

Last week, we had a number of staff members that wereinvolved in “Learning Walks”. A group of teachers visiting anumber of classes to look at evidence of learning by thestudents supported by artefacts on the wall. Our main focus atour school are English and Maths learning walls and how thisis used effectively to support students’ learning. Teachers hadthe opportunity to visit their colleague’s room within their owncohort or a classroom of another cohort. For example, Year6 teachers visiting a Year 1 classroom. This opportunity aimsto foster conversation about teaching and learning in order todevelop a shared vision of high quality teaching that impacts onstudents’ learning.

As you are aware our Deputies have worked extremely hardin the behaviour space. The PBL committee continues to playa significant role in ensuring that our students and staff havea good understanding of our Dalby State School ExpectationMatrix. You will find the matrix around the school. Every weekon whole school parade, Mr Edmunds explains to the studentsour cool tool/focus area which is directly aligned with our wholeschool expectation matrix. So, after whole school parade,teachers in classrooms continue to teach our cool tool toensure that all students understand behaviour expectationsduring that week. PBLPBL

The diagram below shows how the PBL continuum appliesto all students. PBL establishes strong school-wide universalsystems that promote early intervention, and the teaching andacknowledging of social-emotional skills. PBL helps schoolsto develop consistent systems to discourage unproductivebehaviour.

Tier 2 targeted support is a team driven process. It strengthensand builds upon what has been taught to students at theuniversal level. Some students, approximately 10-15 per cent,will respond to Tier 1 supports but will continue to exhibit somedifficulties. These students may be need additional academicand/or social-emotional support.

A smaller group of students, approximately 1-5 per cent, mayneed individualised and intensive Tier 3 supports as well asuniversal and targeted support. Schools will build upon thefoundations of the school-wide system to support thesestudents. Interventions focus on creating and implementingindividualised behaviour support plans that are linked to theuniversal system.

Earlier this week, all students in Year 3 to Year 6 received ahard copy of their respective Term 3 Curriculum AssessmentCalendars. The assessment calendar has been provided tostudent and parents for the first time here at Dalby StateSchool. The intent of this document is to assist and supportstudents with their time management and organisation whenfocussing on their learning outcomes for each subject areaacross the term. The document can also assist them with themanagement of their extra-curricular activities, both in and outof school time.

I would like to see parents and carers take the time to readover their child’s assessment calendar to ensure that you canprovide support for your child during the busy assessmenttimes. Please note that the outlined times when assessmentitems are due, can be flexible due to teacher discretion and/or school events that may interfere with the timing of whenassessment items are due. If there are changes, the classroomteacher should ensure that the appropriate communication issent out to students and parents/carers.

I provided PDF copies of each Year level assessment calendarfor you to download – just in case your child did not bring homethe hard copy.

A copy of your child’s classroom teacher weekly teachingtimetable will also be provided to students next week (Week 5).This document will complement the assessment calendars asyou can have very direct conversations with your child aboutwhat subjects are being covered over the duration of a day andthe week. Please note, a teacher’s timetable is at times flexible– due to the accommodation of school events, time challengesand resources available to them at the time.

Last Thursday I had the privilege of escorting the SchoolCaptains and Vice Captains to the follow-up StudentLeadership Workshop (of which the first was held in March) withthe Western Downs Regional Council. This seminar was titled“Leadership“Leadership –– moremore thanthan aa Badge”.Badge”. It involved the studentsreflecting on goals, both personal and school, that they setthemselves back at Seminar 1. The seminar was delivered byGraham Hyman from Youth Specialists Australia. Our leadersparticipated with other primary school leaders and high schoolleaders across the district. It was great to see the studentsworking with older students across the afternoon – sharingtheir goals, challenges as leaders and how to make sure thatnext year’s leaders will be well prepared for leadership. Thestudents worked through the following questions:

Each school was asked to deliver a 3 – 5 minute report that toldthe following:

The students supported their report with a PowerPointpresentation. Yet again, the students did themselves, and theschool very proud. I have attachedthe article that the students received – it is a great read, nomatter your age (I found it quite valuable, both professionallyand personally in the busy day-to-day life that I lead). I seea need for all Year 6 students to listen to Graham spiritedpresentation and hear the message of all individuals takingcharge of their lives and achieve their dreams through his tipsand his life mantra of: “The“The dayday youyou acceptaccept whowho youyou areare isisthethe dayday youyou taketake thethe firstfirst stepstep toto becomingbecoming whowho youyou cancan be”be”(Graham Hyman, 2018).

Year 6 STEM UpdateYear 6 STEM Update

Last newsletter edition I outlined what the 12 Year 6 STEMstudents were “up to” with their MakeblockMakeblock mBotmBot RangersRangers(Graphical(Graphical Programming)Programming)r during their STEM lessons at DalbyState High School. Over the past two weeks, the studentshave been busy working through 10 levels of programmingto ensure that they have learnt (played with) all the necessarycoding to enable them to CREATE programs for their Rangers.These programs might include responding to light, sound,music or object sensory codes whilst completing a task askedof it. Before engaging in independent learning, the studentsspent time discussing the benefits of Robots and autonomousmachines in society. The students can certainly articulate thebenefits and downsides to technological advancement in therobotic and coding sectors. They viewed a number of YouTubeclips of autonomous robot examples already being used inindustries around the world.

The students have certainly been very creative in relation towhat they are making their rangers do. This week’s sessionconcluded with two highly entertaining events – Ranger soccerand Ranger races. Although the provided photos do not dojustice to the fun (and chaos) that was being had by allstudents, it is at least a taste of the unconscious learning thatwas going on.

Last term and the first few weeks of Term 3 saw the students ofDalby State School participate in ‘The Digital Lego Challenge’In the first round students when up against their fellow class

mates to decide their class champion. The winners then wentinto Round 2 where the other class champions from their yearlevel vied to become the cohort champion. Round 3 saw thecohort champions and runners-up play off. Yr 3 and Yr 4 forJunior Champion and Yr 5 and Yr 6 for Senior Champion.The winners of both Junior and Senior were awarded a $50voucher to purchase Lego of their choice from CunninghamNews and Toyworld. The final round pitted the skills of theJunior Champion and Runner-up against The Senior Championand Runner-up to decide on the School Champion. The winnerto receive the 2019 trophy.

In support of Indigenous Literacy Day 4th of September, DalbyState School will take part in “The Great Book Swap”. TheGreat Book Swap is a fantastic way to celebrate reading locally,and to raise much-needed funds for remote communities. Theidea is for students to browse for a book they would like to takein exchange for either a gold coin or note donation. The Swapwill occur the first week of September
