There is never a dull moment in the summertime at Child Center~Marygrove. Here is just alittle of what the residents experienced during the last few months…Evergreen began a Summer Workout Blast. The girls walked two miles twice a week andlearned yoga and Taebo. They also had an etiquette class. The girls are looking forward to atrip to the Ozarks in September. The boys of Willowood went to Six Flags, the Zoo, thearcade, and reportedly saw every new release at the movies! Their big trip was to Springfield,IL, where the boys learned about Abraham Lincoln. The young women of Rosewood managedto pack in peach picking, picnics, trips to area water parks, and lots of movies. They alsowent to Grant’s Farm, Meramec Caverns and Six Flags. Their big trip was to Wisconsin Dells. The residents of Aspen had a relaxing summer. They went to the Muny, Raging Rivers, par-ticipated in activities at the Civic Center, went skating and spent a considerable amount oftime visiting area malls! In August they went camping at Babler State Park. The young menof Cypress headed to the new ballpark for a Cardinal’s game, played demolition ball, wentto a professional women’s football game and to the movies. They also went bowling andskating throughout the summer. On their trip to Memphis, they saw a minor league baseballgame and then toured Graceland. Cedar residents went to the driving range, batting cages,Fast Lane Hot Rod Shop, Lambert’s Café, bowling, skating, to Grant’s Farm, and the ArtMuseum. They also traveled to Chicago, visiting the Shedd Aquarium, The Museum ofScience and Industry, The Field Museum, Navy Pier, Sears Tower and the ESPN Zone.
Jamie R. from EvergreenCottage threw a perfectstrike at “Go To Bat ForKids” night at BuschStadium, an annual eventsponsored by CatholicCharities and held everyJune. Selected to throw outthe first pitch, Jamie threw agreat “but not too fast ball”to Cardinals pitcher JeffSuppan, with Fredbird thereto cheer her on.
Her first visit to the newBusch Stadium, Jamie wasaccompanied by her cottagefriends and 80 other ChildCenter-Marygrove residentsand supervisors. Jamie wasthrilled to see the new ball-park, hear “Take Me Out tothe Ballgame” sung by allthe fans, and after herappearance on the field, couldn’t wait to join herfriends and get popcorn andcotton candy.
Fifteen-year old Lisa A., of Rosewood Cottage, is our June Resident of the Month. Lastyear, as a student at Hazelwood Central, Lisa performed well and improved her behaviorand her grades. Lisa really enjoys music and plays the piano, clarinet and guitar. In herspare time she likes hanging out with friends. She plans to attend college and would liketo pursue a career in psychology or perhaps join the U.S. Coast Guard. Lisa has a greatsense of humor, and according to her supervisor, uses it often. She is also very creativeartistically and comes up with some unique ideas in her drawings.
Our July Resident of the Month is fifteen-year old Emma G. of Aspen Cottage. Emma attendsNorthview School, where she makes mostly A’s and B’s. Emma loves the outdoors and playingsports. She can often be seen roller blading or riding her bike around the campus, but sheenjoys soccer the most. Emma is a certified lifeguard and is very proud of this accomplishment. She plans to go to college and would like to become either a veterinary assistant, or work withchildren as a teacher or coach. Emma has made considerable progress in reducing powerstruggles with family members and controlling physical aggression since being placed at ChildCenter~Marygrove. Several of the young girls of Evergreen Cottage
took time over the summer to participate in an
etiquette class that was taught by cottage staff Ronda Carter, Erica McNeal and Gloria James.
Recently, at a mock dinner, the girls demonstrated what they learned, such as putting their
napkins on their laps, when to use each utensil, the proper way to eat soup, and how to ask for
and pass an item at the table to another guest. The girls did a great job, and for participating,
were treated to dinner at Dave & Busters which gave them a real opportunity to practice what
they learned.
