'An'arrangement'of'a'traditional'Arabic'folk'song.'The'quasi'improvised'ornaments'of'the'solo'instrument'have'been'written'out'as'closely'as'possible.'The'performers'should'play'them'with'an'improvised'feel'and'may'feel'free'to'add'further'ornamentation.'The'sound'should'be'in'the'ball'park'of'a'double>reed'folk'instrument'and'without'vibrato'unless'indicated.'
The'drone'should'not'be'shy.'In'the'ball'park'of'a'pipe'instrument'or'hurdy>gurdy.'
The'cello'percussion'elements'mimic'traditional'folk'percussion'instruments.'The'low>pitched'percussion'should'sound'as'‘boomy’'and'resonant'as'possible.'The'performer'may'experiment'to'find'the'best'sound,'but'I'would'suggest'to'strike'the'centre'of'the'back'of'the'cello'with'the'palm.'If'possible,'real'percussion'instruments'may'be'used.'
For'the'high>pitched'percussion,'the'sound'should'be'sharp'and'clear,'with'strong'accents.'I'would'suggest'slapping'the'top'of'the'ribs'of'the'cello'with'the'fingers,'but'again'the'performers'may'experiment'to'find'what'works'best'for'them.'
This'arrangement'was'commissioned'by'the'Steirisches'Kammermusikfestival'for'a'performance'in'December'2016.'
