Skills and qualifications can help to open up new options for work

and further study – so you’ll reap the benefits in the long term!

Remission of fees usually applies to vocational further education

courses.

Non vocational leisure courses, short courses, and Teesside

University courses do not qualify for remission of fees. Details of

fees for all courses can be found on the individual course leaflets

on our website www.darlington.ac.uk

You will be required to pay your fees at the point of enrolment

or provide proof of employer sponsorship which may include a

purchase order number.

Free vocational courses for 16 – 18’s:

• If you are 16 – 18 years old on 31 August, no fees apply to

vocational further education courses

Your learning could be FREE if you study for a vocational

further education course and meet certain criteria.

• If you are unemployed.

• You get state benefits such as Job Seeker’s Allowance (JSA),

Employment and Support Allowance (ESA) or in the Work

Related Activity Group (WRAG) or receive Universal Credits –

you must be aged 19 or over and applying for a course up to

level 2.

• You enrol on a full level 2 qualification, aged 19-23 (as at

31/8/19) and don’t already hold a full level 2 qualification or

higher.

• You enrol on a full level 3 qualification, aged 19-23 (as at

31/8/19) and don’t already hold a full level 3 qualification or

higher.

Alternatively there is a Payment plan. The college has a plan

that allows you to pay 75% of course costs in monthly instalments

after paying 25% when you enrol.

Assistance you can receive if your household income is less

than £25,000 for 19+ students or less than £21,000 for

Advanced Learner Loan students:

• Childcare. You can apply for assistance with childcare costs.

If your child is entitled to the Government’s 15 hours of free

childcare initiative (over 38 weeks), then this must be used

to cover your timetabled hours in college. In addition to this,

Darlington College will pay for any additional childcare cover,

for example if you are timetabled to be in college for 22

hours per week, the college will fund the additional 7 hours of

childcare per week, during term time only. If you are under 20

when you enrol on your course you may qualify for childcare

fees whilst you study through the Care to Learn Fund. For

more details visit www.gov.uk/care-to-learn and follow the

link for Care to Learn or call the helpline on 0800 1218989.

• Transport. If you live more than three miles from the college

you may be eligible for help with travel costs. Assistance

includes: Free Arriva bus pass for Darlington, County Durham

and Tees Valley students*; a travel grant for students either

with their own car or who can’t use public transport. *

• Essential clothing, equipment and kits. You can receive a

contribution of up to £250 for help with the cost of essential

clothing, equipment and kits for your courses such as

hairdressing, beauty or catering kits and uniforms, etc.*

• Free meals. To be eligible for free meals, a student’s

household income must be below £10,000.*

*These benefits are means tested and subject to conditions. The

level of support the college can offer students is dependent on the

total funding received from government. Subject to change.

unless the course is cancelled by the college.

The advertised course fees is for the full duration of the course.

Payment plan

Darlington College offers an instalment payment plan for tuition

fees. You are required to pay 25% of the tuition fee at the point

of enrolment along with the examination and registration fees.

The remaining 75% of the tuition fee will be collected in

monthly instalments by direct debit concluding one month

before the end of the course.

Failure to make payment on the due date will result in all

outstanding fees being immediately due. Continued failure to

pay course fees may result in your removal from the course of

study.

If you withdraw from your course before completion you will

still be liable for payment of all outstanding fees.

Page 9: Darlington College Part Time Course Guide 2019-20 · comprehensive range of part time and higher education courses so whether you are hoping to improve your career prospects, change

Exam late entries and re-sits

Registration and exam entries that do not meet awarding

body closing dates means you may become liable for late fees

payments. There is no remission on late entry fees. Contact

Exams on 01325 503104 for further details.

Examination re-sits may be charged at the discretion of the

college. Any student requiring more than 2 resits of any

individual examination will be referred to the curriculum

manager and a fee will be charged at the discretion of the

manager. The manager will ensure that adequate tuition is

received before another re-sit is booked. If a fee is required

it will be charged at the awarding organisation fee plus 10%

administration cost. If a re-sit is requested for an examination

that has been passed, in order to improve a grade, this will be

charged at the same rate as above.

Professional and Career Development Loans

If you are studying a management and professional qualification

that runs up to two years you may be able to take out

a Professional and Career Development Loan. This is an

agreement you make with a participating bank to borrow an

amount between £300 and £10,000. You can use it to help with

course fees, other course costs like books, travel, and childcare,

and living expenses. Call the Career Development Loan Helpline

for more information on 0800 585505.

University level qualifications

If you are studying a Teesside University course at Darlington

College then you may be able to apply for a tuition fee loan.

Ask for a copy of the Higher Education Courses Financial

Information leaflet for more details.

Advanced Learner Loan

If you’re aged 19 or over, you may qualify for an Advanced Learner

Loan. These loans help you to pay the fees charged by colleges

and training organisations. Most learners aged 19 and over,

studying at Level 3 to 6, will qualify for these loans from the UK

government. It’s easy to apply, your household income isn’t taken

into account and there’s no credit check. You won’t have to pay

anything back until your income is over £25,725 a year.

To qualify you must be:

upper age limit)

the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man for three years

immediately before this unless you meet one of the exceptions

• studying with a college or training organisation in England

approved for public funding

4 only if your course begins before 1 August 2019) which

includes A levels, Access to HE Diplomas and other Vocational

Qualifications.
