Remission of fees – your course could be FREE!

Skills and qualifications can help to open up new optionsfor work and further study – so you’ll reap the benefits inthe long term!

Remission of fees usually applies to vocational furthereducation courses.

Non vocational leisure courses, short courses, andTeessideUniversity courses do not qualify for remission of fees. Details offees for all courses can be found on the individual course leafletson our websitewww.darlington.ac.uk

Youwill be required to pay your fees at the point of enrolment orprovide proof of employer sponsorship whichmay include apurchase order number.

Free vocational courses for 16 – 18’s:

• If you are 16 – 18 years old on 31August, no fees apply tovocational further education courses

Free vocational courses for 19 or over:

1. If you are between 19 – 23 years old studying entry level orlevel 1 and have not attained a full level 2 qualification

2. If you are between 19 – 23 years old studying your firstfull level 2 qualification

3. If you are between 19 – 23 years old studying your firstfull level 3 qualification

4. If you are between 19 – 23 years old studying alevel 4 qualification and have not attained afull level 3 qualification

5. Youwish to studyGCSE English/maths and have notalready attained a gradeA*-C in these subjects

6. If you are 19 years and over studying courses up to level 2and are claiming Job Seeker’s Allowance/EmploymentSupport Allowance in theWorking RelatedActivityGroup

For 1 – 10 youwill be required to sign a declaration to confirmthis is your first qualification at that particular level.

Remission of awarding body costs

If you are entitled to remission of fees in the categories detailedabove then youwill also be entitled to remission of awardingbody costs which includes registration, examination andcertification fees.


Financial help

Course costsAll tuition fees and awarding body costs are non-refundable,unless the course is cancelled by the college.

For courses with a duration of more than one year the advertisedcourse fees are for the first year only. Additional fees will be payablefor the second year. Excluding courses eligible for a24+Advanced Learning Loan which show costs for the full course.

10% Discount for early enrolmentsA 10%discount will be offered for enrolments completedon or before 31 August 2014 for all Darlington College coursesstarting between 1 September 2014 and 31 July 2015. The discountis only applicable to tuition fees, which must be paid for infull at enrolment.

Exam and registration fees are payable in full.

Payment planDarlington College offers an instalment payment plan for tuitionfees. You are required to pay 25%of the tuition fee at the point ofenrolment along with the examination and registration fees.

The remaining 75% of thetuition fee will be collected inmonthly instalments by directdebit concluding one monthbefore theend of the course.

Failure to make payment onthe due date will result in alloutstanding fees beingimmediately due. Continuedfailure to pay course fees mayresult in your removal from the course of study.

If you withdraw from your course before completion you will stillbe liable for payment of all outstanding fees.

Exam late entries and re-sitsRegistration and exam entries that do not meet awardingbody closing dates means you may become liable for late feespayments. There is no remission on late entry fees. ContactExams on 01325 503104 for further details.

Exam re-sits do not qualify for remission of fees.

If you are studying a management and professionalqualification that runs up to two years you may beable to take out a Professional and Career DevelopmentLoan. This is an agreement you make with a participatingbank to borrow an amount between £300 and £10,000.You can use it to help with course fees, other course costslike books, travel, and childcare, and living expenses. University level qualificationsIf you are studying a Teesside University Course atDarlington College then you may be able to apply for atuition fee loan. Ask for a copy of the Higher EducationCourses Financial Information leaflet for more details.

Financial adviceIt is important you consider your own circumstances andlook into all options for paying for your course beforechoosing to take out a loan. For free, impartial advice goto www.moneyadviceservice.org.uk or contact themon 0300 500 5000.

Study now, pay when you are earning

If you’re aged 24 or over on the start date of your course,you can take out a 24+Advanced Learning Loan to coveryour course fees for some level 3 or 4 qualifications. This isa low cost loan introduced by theGovernment.Repayments don’t start until April 2016 and only when youare earning over £21,000. Have a look in this part timeguide on page 18 where you will see the eligible courses.

How to apply

To apply for a 24+ Advanced Learning Loan you will needa ‘funding and information letter’ from the college. Wewill provide this to you after you have applied for thecourse. You can apply for a loan through the StudentLoans Company at www.gov.uk/advanced-learning-loans. You will get a letter confirming your loan from theStudent Loans Company, usually within two weeks. No fee if you study a degree

If you take out a 24+Advanced Learning Loan for a Level 3Access to Higher Education course and go on to completea Higher Education course, such as a degree, you won’tneed to pay back the 24+Advanced Learning Loan.

You can receive a contribution for help with the cost of essentialclothing, equipment and kits for your course such ashairdressing, beauty or catering kits and uniforms etc. To qualifyyour household income must be below £21,000.

The Glasshouse Restaurant is the realistic working environment for the cateringstudents at Darlington College. From 10am each day we serve a wide selection of hotand cold drinks from our licenced bar and light snacks including scones, Danishpastries, teacakes, bacon sandwiches, toasted muffin with scrambled egg. From12pm our lunch menu offers a selection of dishes to suit all appetites includingsandwiches, salads and omelettes to a selection of starters, main courses andmouth-watering desserts.
