Marina, I would like to welcome you to our

site on the sunny side of the River Dart at

Kingswear.

We take pride in having provided our

customers with excellent service for nearly

40 years as a family run business.

The chandlery is one of the best stocked

in the South West. We are a Volvo Penta

Centre with parts and fully trained

technicians to match. We are also dealers

for Perkins, Yanmar, Williams Ribs, etc., on

the engineering front. We can now also

service outboard motors.

Other services provided on site include

electronic and electrical parts supply and/or repair and also wood and GRP repairs along

with a 35 tonne travel hoist which can operate at all states of the tide. All our staff are highly

trained with many years of experience in their respective fields.

I believe the River Dart offers one of the most attractive ports of call anywhere on the

South Coast and beyond. The town of Dartmouth has a lot to offer the visitor in the way of

restaurants and shops. The river itself makes it well worth a trip up to Totnes to see the

beautiful scenery and wildlife. There are two exceptional NT properties nearby too.

u The wearing of lifejackets/buoyancy aids by all children under 14 years old when on the pontoons or aboard boats in the marina.

u Walk, don’t run along the pontoons – and do use the handrail on the access gangway.

u Cycles and scooters should only be ridden on the public road, and not on the pontoons, the quay or any other part of the marina premises.

u For the benefit of all berth holders, dogs must be on a lead when on the quay, the pontoons, the car park – indeed anywhere on the marina site. And do, please, ensure that no fouling occurs.

u Signs on the standpipes indicate that Darthaven Marina recommends that water be boiled before drinking when acquired through hoses.

Carelessness can lead to accidents . . . and accidents can spoil your day – or a whole lot more. So in our marina and whenever you’re by the water . . .

. . . be safe – be boat safe.

u To avoid being a hazard to berth holders, trolleys should be returned to the area near the marina office after use. Do not overload them – and no children in them at any time, please.

u No part of a boat, including its anchor, should overhang the walkways or pontoons.

u No items should be left on the pontoons or walkways at any time. This includes commercial fish boxes and diving bottles.

u If you have a fire on board, from your cockpit determine a sensible course of action . . . call the fire service (999) . . . activate the fire alarm (by marina office) if practical. Maintain awareness if fire occurs anywhere in marina . . . take instructions from staff and/or emergency services.

Approaching from the East, the Mewstone close to the harbour entrance is clearly visible. Keep to the South of the two cardinal buoys to the South and the West of the Mewstone.

From the West, the conspicuous Daymark can be seen on the headland just beyond the harbour entrance – as can the Mewstone also beyond the harbour entrance.

The second cardinal buoy, West Rock, lies immediately offshore of the National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) lookout at Froward Point.

Head towards the Kingswear Lighthouse – at night, keep within the white sector of the light. The Checkstone Buoy (red can) is left to port as you approach the narrows by the castle.

After passing the castle, keep to starboard of the middle of the river. As you pass the Royal Dart Yacht Club you will see beyond it the Lower Car Ferry, the Passenger Ferry quay and the entrance to Darthaven Marina in turn, all to starboard.

As you approach, do contact us on VHF Ch 80 or telephone 01803 752545 to check availability of a suitable berth. If available, you will be directed to a berth, not necessarily on the visitors’ pontoons.

As you approach the harbour entrance, leave the Homestone Buoy (red can) to port and the Castle Ledge Buoy (green cone) to starboard.

Dart Music Festival 15 – 17 MayDartmouth’s annual ‘Music for All’ festival with a great party atmosphere pervading the three days.

From Jazz to Choral; Folk to Blues; Rock to Didgeridoo; Sitar to Gospel; Orchestra to Choirs; Big Band to Ska; Taiko Drumming to Opera to Sea Shanties – and each year is different.

Music is played in numerous indoor and out-door locations throughout the town, much of it free to listen to.

Classic Channel Regatta 11 – 18 JulyThe regatta is a uniquely enjoyable week of ‘gentleman’s racing’, passage making and social events.

In just one week, while sailing to three of the finest ports in the Channel, there are two days of racing off Dartmouth, followed by the Classic Channel Race to Paimpol, then the Round Île de Bréhat Race, a passage race to Guernsey and finally the Round Sark Race.

Kingswear Regatta 28 – 29 JulyKingswear’s own regatta – with a series of row-ing races in Waterhead Creek just to the North of Darthaven Marina.

Also featured are displays of vintage and clas-sic cars, a duck race, a dog show, childrens en-tertainments and games, a BBQ, cream teas and a bar.

This light-hearted occasion right on our door-step is not to be missed!

Shakespeare Week 4 – 8 AugustFor the past twelve years The Inn Theatre Com-pany has presented Dartmouth Shakespeare Week in the open-air at Dartmouth Castle – a stunning, natural location.

In 2015 they are presenting Shakespeare’s wonderfully anarchic comedy The Merry Wives of Windsor.

Wives was written in about 1598, but the Com-pany has decided to set it in the early 1950s. It’s a clever take on the play – don’t miss it, it will be fabulous!

171st Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta 27 – 30 AugustDarthaven sponsors the sailing element of the Regatta – which has grown to become the coun-try’s most significant regatta after Cowes. We make special arrange ments that week to provide berthing for the large numbers of yachts visiting to compete. We can handle yachts up to 40ft in length, but regret that we cannot accommodate non-competing “mother ships”.

It has become the practice for a marquee to be erected on Darthaven premises to provide crews and supporters with food and drink during the Regatta.

Our permanent berth holders have an ideal base for either participating in the Regatta or for

spectating – including a splendid vantage point for the various air displays including the ever-popular Red Arrows.

Dartmouth Food Festival 23–25 OctoberOver the last 11 years, the Food Festival has de-veloped into a major food event – a unique mix of celebrity chefs, parties, food markets, tasting snacks, talks about food and numerous cooking demonstrations.

It’s a showcase for the best that the South West has to offer where local produce can be sampled from the many stalls. Special menus are offered by several Dartmouth restaurants. It all contributes to a great party atmosphere.

Darthaven is located in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which visitors can experience by boat, by walking or by public transport. The upper reaches of the Dart are well worth exploring by boat or by taking the scenic footpaths on either side of the river.KingswearDarthaven is located on the Kings wear side of the Harbour, where it enjoys the afternoon and even-ing sun. Kings wear is a small village, yet boasts an historic church, two pubs, a village shop, a post office, a café/restaurant and the welcoming Royal Dart Yacht Club.

Kingswear is also the terminus for the steam railway which in daylight summer hours and dur-ing school holidays runs to Paignton. Close to the marina there are two ferries across the river to Dartmouth – both of which take foot passengers.

DartmouthJust across the river, Dartmouth is an attrac-tive historic port and market town with shops, restaurants and other facilities. These include a museum with many interesting nautical exhibits

and the Flavel Arts Centre with its programme of drama, films, comedy and music. Dartmouth’s excellent restaurants and cafés, plus pubs serv-ing food are listed on page 22. There are many interesting corners and fascinating old buildings within the back streets and in the centre a Boat Float for local small boats.

Dartmouth, of course, is also home to the Britannia Royal Naval College which has been preparing officers for duty in the the Royal Navy plus many friendly foreign navies since 1905.

GreenwayA visit to Greenway House provides an extra-ordinary glimpse into the private holiday home of Agatha Christie and her family. The relaxed and atmospheric house interior is set in the 1950s, and contains many of the family’s collections.

Outside you can explore the extensive wood-land garden, with a restored vinery and peach house, wild areas and rare plantings, plus a bath house on the river.

Coleton FishacreAnother nearby National Trust pro perty – previ-ously the holiday home of the D’Oyly Carte family.

The 30 acre garden has viewpoints out to sea and paths weaving past ponds and tender plants from the Mediterranean, South Africa and New Zealand which thrive in the moist and sheltered valley. Blackpool SandsYou can visit this immaculately maintained beach by boat, however, please do not take your dog ashore – you may cause the beach to lose its Blue Flag status for cleanliness and environmental management. You can also visit the award-win-ning café to be found there.

Sharpham VineyardClassic English wines produced at Sharpham have achieved an impressive tally of International Awards. If you time your visit around high tide you can visit by boat.

South West Coast PathThe South West Coast Path leaves Kings wear for Froward Point, Coleton Fish acre and spectacular cliffs to Berry Head and Brixham. At Froward Point there is a National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) watchstation manned by volunteers – with views over Start Bay and the harbour entrance. On the other side of the Dart, the path from Dartmouth Castle to Stoke Fleming and beyond is no less magnificent.

Slapton Sands and LeyStill in Start Bay, you can anchor off the two mile long Slapton Sands. Behind Slapton Sands is the Slapton Ley National Nature Reserve, the main feature of which is the largest natural freshwater lake in the South West. It is a haven for wildlife including an enormous variety of birds.

Start Point LighthouseThe forty minute tour of this lighthouse at the southern end of Start Bay is fascinating and with splendid views from the lantern room – but do consult the website www.trinityhouse.co.uk for opening times which vary throughout the year.
