CHILDREN'S CORNER
This month we want to remind
you of two bIg events coming up
shortly, Sl. Patrick's Day and Easter.
The fmt means hopefully another
big Parade in Maynooth With all
organisations, clubs and shops taking
part.
WIll your associatIOn or club take
part? Why not find out now and
make sure. After all, it doesn't take
much time or effort, and you could
bring your club or aSSOCIatIOn to
the notIce of everybody.
The second even I Will be a much
qUieter affan, with holidays from
school and preceded by Lenl. Not
so long ago lent was a time of
fasting and penance and people
went to great lengths to endure
hardship. Nowadays we lend to
gIve up some little luxury and this
IS usually much easier to do.
How about thiS year, Instead of
giVing up somethIng, you did some
action or deed which would be
of benefit to others In the community
or elsewhere where there IS a need
or want or lack of something.
So think about It seflously and put
your Ideas Into
all next month.
Bless you all.

I deCided to write to tell you about
the Snow whIch has just passed. We
were In school when we looked out of
the Window and saw the beautIful
snow-white flakes failing. We were all
delIghted because the leacher told us
we could have a half -day. That nlghl
l he snow got worse so we had
a free day next day. We played snow-
balls, made snowmen and we rolled In
It. But alas, the snow melted and then
It was all gone. But we look forward

coming County Development plan.
The main items emphasised by the

plan for future residential development
In Maynooth.

developments are In keeping With
the eXisting characler of the area.
4. The urgent need to provide
a multi-purpose Sports Complex.
5. The need to tackle the Itinerant
problem. 6. The need to prevent commercial
redevelopment of Carton Estate,
the County Council to make every
effort to have the Eslate taken
inlo public ownership and developed
as a park and hefllage centre.
In addition to the above, the Commun-
ity Council has since submllted to
the Counly Council a list of more
specific local needs requlfing urgent
attentIOn. These include:

On Wed. 13th Feb. 90 of our Old

It was a beautiful show and the Old

this opportunity to say lhanks to
Mr. Pat Barton who, as always,
proVided free of charge two splendid

Mr. ChrIS Allen and Mr. Willie Cusker
for their help With the Old People.
Our next party will be 'held on Sunday
3rd March at a completely new

has agreed lo put the library at
our disposal for the Party. We look
forward to meeting all our fflends
there and of course wOy.'d to
thank Mr. Ashe for his co-operation.
At the moment we are organrsmg
our Annual Church Gate Collection
to be held on Sat/Sun 23/24th tvlarch.
Unfortunately our funds at thiS
are almost exhausted. The fuel
biJi for Chllstmas and Pantomime which cost almost £400 have taken
their toll of our remainmg funds.
We hope, followmg the Church Gate
CollectIOn, to be In a position to
give a further supply of fuel. We
feel that m this particularly cold
spell, old people will use more fuel
than usual.
I am therefore appealmg to everyone
'to bring a Iitlle extra cash t.o Mass
on that Sunday. Please remember
if got even the pflce of 1 packet
of cigarettes from every wage-earner
m the area it would ensure that
none of our Old People will be

under the direction
of Mr. Ashe have agreed to distribute a leaflet to every house just to

CllR. G. BRADY NOTES
Following representations made by
Cllr. Brady on behalf of the residents
of Old Greenfield regarding the back road to Old Greenfield from
the Newtown Road, the County·
Engineer has replied that
work will be undertaken in
February or early March 1985.
repair
late
The County Engineer stated that it had been agreed that the planning
of both by-passes would go ahead
hand In hand. However, the survey
of the Newbndge by-pass had been
gOing ahead for a couple of years
and the line for the northern by-pass
had not been ascertained until recently.
It was hoped that the public Inquiry
In relallOn to the Newbrldge By-Pass
would be held in April or May and
thaI the public Inquiry In relation
to the northern by-passes would not be held until towards the end
of the year. The monies provided
for advance planning on the norlhern
by-passes would be used for soil
and aerial surveys and should be
adequate for the CUI rent year.
ROAD GRANTS 1985
FollOWing circulatIOn of a letter
from the Department setting out
the allocation of Road Grants for
1985, Cllr. Brady expressed disappOint-
ment at the allocation of only
£280,000 for tldvance design on
the N4 and N7 and noted thaI In
addlt IOn I he N7 had got a further
allocation of £580,000. He stated
that the traffic on the northern
route was now very heavy and
this was particularly evident in the
town of Leixlip.
He understood that advance design
for both the northern by-pass and
the Droichead Nua By-Pass were of equal priority and asked why
the Newbridge By-Pass now appeared
to have priority over the by-passe~
of Lucan, Leixlip, Maynooth and
Kilcock.

Dear Editor
Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God St. Raphael's, Celhridge, Co. Kildare. Telephone 288161/2/3
I am writing to you in the hope tha"c J'v-l can assist us with our BREAKAWAY Programme for 1985. This is a holiday scheme for children with Mental Handicap. Under the scheme, the children spend up to two weeks with another family in the community. The idea is to provide a home-from-home for the children, giving both parents and children a break.
I am sure that your readers would be interested in reading about this scheme and we would very much appreciate your support in our endeavour to place children with host families.
The following are important dates for our programme to be a success. Information evenings at the following venues will be held at:
ST JOHN OF GOD DAY CENTRE, ISLANDBRIDGE ON WEDNESDAY 6th MARCH at 8.00pm.
& ST RAPHAEL'S, CELBRIDGE ON WEDNESDAY 20th MARCH AT 8.00pm.
Please contact me 288161 should you further information.
Yours Sincerely, John Bohane, Social Worker.
What is Break Away?
Break away IS a holiday scheme
for children With mental handicap.
Dur I ng the year the children go
on holidays for up to two weeks,
at anyone time, to a family In
the community. The Idea is to proVide
a home from home setting, giVing
both parents and children a break.
Why was Break Away set up?
. Traditionally in Ireland, the emphasis
was on residential care for people
with mental handicap. In recent
times, this emphasis has changed

Important of all, David's story .....•.
David is a 7 year old boy, who
II ves With his parents and three
sisters. He does not find it easy
to play with other children, because
he has difficulty In making himself
understood. He also finds it hard
to do things other children do. DaVid
is mentally handicapped. During
the day he attends a speCial school,
where he is being taught to feed
himself, dress himself, and is present ly
being tOIlet trained. He can be very
demanding and active, and his family
need a break from time to time.
11
F or the past few years, DaVid has
gone to a Break Away Host Family
101 hiS holidays. He adapt ed well
to the change because of the lOVing
care thiS lamily gave him. HIS parents
enjoyed the break and felt secure
that he was In good hands. The
Host Parents found that caring for
him was rewarding, challenging and
enjoyable for all the famtly.
David's story very much reflects
the feelings of most Host Families
In the scheme.
What can you expect if you become
a Host Parent? All host families who apply to the
Break Away Scheme, take part
In a preparat IOn course. ThiS invol ves
discussions on various aspects of
caring for a child who IS mentally
handicapped, including ways of coping
with very specific needs, behaviour
etc. It also gives Host Parents an
opportunity to look at the implicatIOns
for their own family. The preparation
involves visits to the centres the
children attend by day, and numerous
opportunities to get 10 know the
child they are taking and his/her
family. Every effort is made to
ensure the child goes to the family
who can best meet his needs.
