Principal’s ReportWe have reached the end of the most exceptional term I haveexperienced in education. The impact of COVID-19 upon theworld has been intense and the challenges for everyonerequired significant strength and patience.

As a school community, we responded with efficiency to thenew norms and developed a diverse range of skills across allaspects (personal and professional) of our lives. We should bevery proud of what we achieved.

I continue to hear numerous positive observations from staffon our students’ attitudes to learning, independence andresilience. These are skills that will be wonderful foundations fortheir future.

Next term, all of our students will receive a written report, emailed home to families, in Week 5. The report will coverlearning during first semester. A detailed letter has previouslybeen sent home regarding the details of the reports.

The school has, and is, responding to all DoE directivessupporting the management of the COVID-19 virus pandemic.I share this information with all stakeholders as it becomesavailable, including external hirers of our school facilities.

As the government, under the advice of the Queensland ChiefMedical Officer, releases pandemic restrictions, the school willbe able to add additional programs and activities at school.Hopefully, I will be able to share a revised school calendar withthe community later in Term 3.

Finally, I want to share the appreciation of the school staff to ourwonderfully supportive families – your support made our Term1 and Term 2 journey so much more comfortable for all of us.

I hope everyone has a wonderful break over the winter vacation. While we cannot travel far, we can certainly find time to enjoyour wonderful state of Queensland and all the unique attractionsthat it offers. And of course, time to visit friends and family.

I look forward to seeing everyone back next term.

distancing and communicating with the teachers and school viaemail. We hope everything will gradually return to normal overthe next term as more restrictions are lifted.

Last week I was excited to attend a presentation given by ourOSHC team to a group of principals and leaders from a rangeof school who were interested in the philosophy and physicalapplication of Nature Play and Play Work. I have watchedwith interest over the years as the OSHC team have embraced, and implemented, their play program which the children whoattend OSHC love and fully participate with. The feedback fromparents over the years has been extremely positive with happychildren being picked up in the afternoon after an afternoon ofproblem solving, creativity and sheer fun!

With the move towards a master plan across the school, theschool leadership team would be very interested in exploringhow aspects of this exceptional program could be embracedacross the school within the environmental and physicalaspects of the school in the future. The philosophy or practicelends itself to active learning, thinking flexibly, creativity, calculated risk taking, working together and all the attributes ofthe Habits of Mind program.

Some of the key points I picked up from the presentation were–

I look forward to finding out more of this practice which isgaining momentum around the world.

Have a great school break. Keep safe.Michael Frearson

Library News

End of Term 2

What an interesting term we have just experienced! Ourstudents have proved to be very resilient and able to adaptto change with great courage. Our Year 3-6 students haverecorded some of the changes thrust upon them in their libraryjournals. A selection of sample entries from many journals areon display in the Senior Library. Thank you for encouraging

your children to reflect on recent changes. Hopefully studentswill keep these journals as a reminder of this time, and maycontinue to add to them throughout the year. We have beendiscussing sources of historical inquiry, with these first-handaccounts of daily life being prime examples.

Credit - Paperzip

Most students have been great at returning their bulk loan of5 books, however there are a few books outstanding sinceLearning from Home. Please help children hunt down anyoverdue books and return them for others to borrow. Emailsregarding overdue books are sent each week. All studentsshould have new books for the holidays.

We are now crossing to the “Scene of theRhyme”

Our Prep students are now officially Nursery Rhyme Expertsafter a ten week unit learning and reciting many NurseryRhymes to achieve their Nursery Rhyme Challenge!! Well donePreppies!

I forgot it was Library day…

Oscar Organisation to the rescue! Do you write reminders onyour calendar then never look at it?? I know I do! I don’tthink my children would have made it through school withouta whiteboard marker in the bathroom! Our must-do dailyreminders were written on their bathroom mirror – up the topabove head height. Library – Monday Swimming – Friday….Thebathroom mirror being the one place they both stood still andtook stock of their week while cleaning teeth etc. Whiteboardmarker will wipe off mirror without a trace, or a post-it notewould work the same. Providing a strategy like this will help yourchildren learn to be organised and independent.

• The theory and practice of Playwork recognises thatchildren’s play should ideally be “freely chosen, personally directed and intrinsically motivated.”

• Play reinforces the child’s growth and developmentand is fundamental to that growth and development.

• Early research supported the notion that childrenenjoyed playing with loose parts such as sticks, stones, boxes, ropes and other open endedmaterials, more than the traditional playgrounds.

• Playwork supports the PROCESS of how childrenplay with playworkers supporting all children in thecreation of a space in which they play; and to extendthe play frame.

• Children will often work towards creating order fromchaos! (I found this part particularly fascinating!)

• The research that OSHC team have undertakensupports the understanding that the Play workprocess supports LESS risks and incidents.

Parent Library

We have books in our school library to assist parents andfamilies with many of the issues which arise during childhood. You can go to our Library homepage and search by keyword toidentify titles. Here are some examples of parent library titles.

Premier’s Reading Challenge

The objective of this challenge is to develop a reading habit.Like most new habits, daily reading needs to be prioritised –so power down for a while each day and pick up a book! Justbecause children can read themselves, doesn’t mean you can’tstill read to them. Reading a chapter aloud is sometimes whatchildren need to get them started on a new book.

Keep on reading over the holidays. Prep to Year 4 need to read20 books and Years 5-6 need to read 15 books. Many studentshave completed and handed their forms in already. Closingdate is in August, but younger students reading shorter bookswill be finished before then. Brisbane City Council libraries areopen for borrowing again if you need more books during thebreak.

Happy reading,Peta de San Miguel

You Can Do ItThe Year 2 children have increased their skilldevelopment in learning about‘Counterexamples’.

When looking at generalisations, they aredeepening their thinking by searching forcounterexamples. Some they did in classwere….

‘You should never scream.’

‘Yes you can when someone is in trouble.’‘Yes you can if you are cheering for your team.’‘Yes you can if you are on a fun, scary ride.’

GETTING ALONG

It is always good to learn about ways to get along with others.

All children in the Junior Campus have been learning fromGabby Get Along.

Here are some of her best suggestions:-

Music Matters

Term 2 Incursion rescheduled for Term 3!

As previously mentioned in this newsletter, KaboomPercussion, who were to present their school show in Term 2,have been able to reschedule their SE Qld tour to Term 3.

As luck would have it, we have been able to book them on thevery same day that Opera Qld would have been here with theirincursion (now cancelled), so the date is already in your 2020CHSIPS Calendars. That’s Week 4, Monday, August 3rd.

What we don’t know yet, due to the dynamic nature of thegovernment advice about gathering in groups, is whether we’llbe having one large performance or two (or more) smallergroups.

We do know that the price per student will be $6.

Kaboom will be in touch with us over the holidays, hopefullywe’ll know what is possible, gathering-wise, which will informwhich year levels we’ll be able to accommodate. It’s in thecalendar as being for years 3-6. Fingers crossed!

Look out for a letter at the start of term with the permission andpayment information.

In the classroom

Prep – Year 2

We attentively and actively listened to many various pieces ofmusic and enthusiastically responded through drawings andcolour.

After a fortnight on Long Service Leave to celebrate a milestonebirthday I returned to full classes with vibrant, willing andpositive music students. The Music Cave is humming andstudents are keen to share their song and musically perform totheir peers.

Yours in song,

Miss OhJulie Owen - Prep-Year 3 music teacher [email protected]

Year 6

Year 6 has been exploring structures ofpopular songs as well as instruments fromaround the world this term. We’ve analysedsongs by Taylor Swift, The Animals, ElvisPresley, The Beatles, George Gershwinlooking at components such as verse, chorus, intro/outro, pre-chorus, bridge (it’s like a real bridge). Ifyou want an ear-worm planted and to have a look/listen withyour Year 6 child at a great video explaining some of this, do ayoutube search for “Learn Popular Music Song Structure” onthe channel of “Mr D. Morley”.

On the interactive whiteboard we had a wonderful chart ofover 500 different musical instruments from different parts ofhistory and regions of the world. Popular with the Year 6s werethe tap shoes, the serpent, the organ that looked like a cupof french-fries, and many more. Some students were moreengaged than in any previous music lesson - it’s always excitingto find that one particular subject that switches somebody on.I’ve had feedback from some parents that the conversationsand explorations continued at home with shared family listeningsessions – excellent to hear!
