Finish writing your third paragraph. Remember to support your points with evidence and to explain your evidence.

Writing your third paragraph:

Write about how the relationship between Catherine and Rodolfo develops

• Flirting • Watching a film together what Eddie accuses Rodolfo of• Dancing together in front of Eddie • Act Two – does Rodolfo really love Catherine? What do they do? How

would the Italian Catholic tradition view it?)

Evidence to include:

• Catherine is ‘enthralled’

• Catherine to Rodolfo singing: ‘He’s terrific!’

• Eddie to Catherine: ‘He marries you he’s got the right to be an American citizen.’

• Catherine, ‘flushed with revolt’, when Eddie tells Rodolfo off

• Rodolfo to Catherine in Act Two: ‘tell yourself, please, that I am not a beggar, and you are not a horse, a gift, a favour for a poor immigrant’

(3) Write about how the relationship between Catherine and Rodolfo develops PointEvidenceExplain

Therefore, Eddie is not happy when the cousins arrive as Rodolfo and Catherine develop a relationship. Catherine is at first impressed by everything Rodolfo does. When he sings ‘Paper Doll’, the stage directions say she is ‘enthralled’. She praises Rodolfo, saying ‘He’s terrific!’ Rodolfo and Catherine become closer and go watch a film together. Eddie gets annoyed and tells Catherine Rodolfo just wants to marry her to get her passport. He says, ‘He marries you he’s got the right to be an American citizen.’ This shows how much he dislikes Rodolfo and how he does not want Catherine to marry anyone. When Eddie tells Rodolfo off for not working much, Catherine gets ‘flushed with revolt’ and gets Rodolfo to dance with her in front of Eddie. This shows that, whatever Eddie thinks, Catherine has chosen her man. By Act Two, their relationship is stronger. When Catherine asks Rodolfo why he wants to marry her, we discover that he does really love Catherine. He tells her, ‘tell yourself, please, that I am not a beggar, and you are not a horse, a gift, a favour for a poor immigrant.’ This shows he respects Catherine. By sleeping together, they go against the Italian Catholic tradition of no sex before marriage.

Tension between Eddie and Rodolfo in Act One

Evidence:

Eddie says of Rodolfo, ‘He sings, he cooks, he could make dresses…’ =

• Eddie’s boxing lesson at the end of Act One – lands a blow on Rodolfo so that it ‘mildly staggers Rodolfo.’ =

• Stage directions at the end of Act One: ‘Marco is face to face with Eddie, a strained tension gripping his eyes and jaw, his neck stiff, the chair raised like a weapon over Eddie’s head – and he transforms what might appear like a glare of warning into a smile of triumph, and Eddie’s grin vanishes as he absorbs his look.’ =
