Donald Trump became the third President in American history to be impeached with a majority of Representatives voting in favour of the two articles of impeachment drawn up by House Democrats.

The articles, essentially the charges against the President, accuse him of abuse of power and

Why Trump was impeached?

Both articles of impeachment are related to the Ukraine scandal, which means the House did not

consider the Robert Mueller report on Russia’s alleged interference in the 2016 election and Mr.

Trump’s handling of the issue. The first article, on abuse of power, is about Mr. Trump’s conduct in the

Ukraine scandal. The second article, on obstruction of Congress, alleges that Mr. Trump obstructed the

Congressional impeachment inquiry by refusing to cooperate with it.

How the House voted?

It was certain before the vote that the impeachment resolution would go through the House of

Representatives, which is controlled by the Democrats. In the 435-member House, the Democrats have

233 members, while the Republicans have 197. The House voted on the impeachment articles largely

along party lines. The first article got 230 votes. The tally on the second article was 229-198

Is Trump out of office?

No. Impeachment by the House doesn’t remove an American President from office immediately.

Impeachment means a majority of House Representatives have approved the articles raised against the

President, setting the stage for his trial in the Senate. After the trial, the Senators will vote on his

conviction. A President can be convicted and removed from office with the support of at least two-

thirds of the Senate (that is 67 Senators in the 100-member U.S. Senate).

Then why the impeachment?

Democrats say it is their constitutional duty to start the impeachment proceedings as the President’s

actions threaten the Constitution.

What type of constitution does America have?

The Constitution has three main functions. First it creates a national government consisting of a

legislative, an executive, and a judicial branch, with a system of checks and balances among the three

branches. Second, it divides power between the federal government and the states.

How many articles are there in the constitution of America?

Its seven sections (or Articles) detail the core components of how the framers wanted the government to run the

country. (See U.S. Constitution For Dummies Cheat Sheet.) Article I – The Legislative Branch. The principal

mission of the legislative body is to make laws.

Union Environment Ministry kept in suspension its letter issued to Karnataka which had stated no

environmental clearance was required for Kalasa Banduri Project.

Kalasa Banduri Project.

The project involves diverting water from Mahadayi river, the lifeline of Goa, into the Malaprabha river.

The Kalasa Banduri project is aimed at providing drinking water to three important districts of north Karnataka — Belagavi, Gadag and Dharwad — which go parched in summer due to acute water scarcity.

Mahadayi river originates from a cluster of 30 springs at Bhimgad in the Western Ghats in the Belgaum district of Karnataka. Then it enters Goa and finally drains in Arabian sea.

Mahadayi Water Tribunal (MWT) Award in 2018:Karnataka has been allocated 13.5tmcft of water, Goa has been 24tmcft while Maharashtra has been allocated 1.3tmcft.

Odisha launched the "Jalsathi" programme

Odisha state government unveiled the "Jalsathi" programme. It was launched by the Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. He also distributed water quality testing kits and point of sale (POS) machines to the women volunteers "Jalasathis".

Aim: The Jalsathi programme aims to ensure the supply of safe drinking water to all households in the state.

Jalsathi programme: ♦ The Water Corporation of Odisha (WATCO) and

women federations in Bhubaneswar signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) for the implementation of the Jalsathi programme. ♦ Jalasathis will be responsible to test water quality, facilitate new water connections, regularise connections, reassessment of demands, meter reading, bill delivery, bill generation, collection of water charges and facilitating complaints redressal

Centre is to set up the first-ever Special Economic Zone

(SEZ) in Tripura.

The announcement was made by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry on 16 December 2019. First SEZ: ♦ The first SEZ for Tripura is being set up at Paschim Jalefa, Sabroom, South Tripura District. It is located 130 km away from Agartala. . ♦ The estimated cost for the project is around Rs.1550 Crore. ♦ The SEZ will be developed by the Tripura Industrial Development Corporation (TIDC) Ltd. ♦ A 100% Income Tax exemption of the SEZ will be provided on export income for SEZ units under Section 10AA of the Income Tax (IT) Act for the first 5 years. ♦ Also, 50% of exemption will be provided for the next 5 years. For another 5 years, 50% of the ploughed back export profit will be provided.

India has become the world's third-largest publisher of science and engineering

It has published over 1.35 lakh scientific papers. China topped the report as the world's largest publisher. Report highlights: ♦ As per the data provided by NSF, the number of scientific papers published worldwide has increased from 1,755,850 in 2008 to 2,555,959 in 2018.

India: In 2008, around 48,998 science and engineering articles

were published by India. The number increased to 1,35,788 articles in 2018. The average annual growth rate in India is 10.73%. India now accounts for 5.31% of the total world publications in science and engineering.

GeM signed two MoU with BOM and UCO Bank aimed to provide

a number of services. MoU Highlights: ♦ The MoU will facilitate the transfer of funds through GeM Pool Accounts (GPA). ♦ The Banks will also provide advise on the Performance Bank Guarantees (e-PBG) and Earnest Money Deposit (EMD) to the registered users on the GeM portal. ♦ It also plans to create an EMD pool account for making it easy for sellers to comply with the EMD requirements while responding to bids. ♦ It will support Special Purpose Vehicle to be called Government e-Marketplace (GeM SPV) which is the National Public Procurement Portal..

Sahitya Akademi has announced the winners of the 2019 Sahitya Akademi Awards Sahitya Akademi has announced the winners of the 2019 Sahitya Akademi Awards in 23 languages on 18 December. Four of novels, seven books of poetry, six of short stories, three of essays and one each of non-fiction, biography, and autobiography won the award. Jury: The awards were recommended by distinguished Jury members who represent 23 Indian languages. The finalists were approved by the Executive Board of the Sahitya Akademi under the Chairmanship of Dr. Chandrashekhar Kambar, President, Sahitya Akademi. Awardees: ♦ Six books of short stories were awarded to Sri Tarun Kanti Mishra in Odia, Sri Abdul Ahad Hajini in Kashmiri, Sri Kirpal Kazak in Punjabi, Sri Ram Swaroop Kisan in Rajasthani, Sri Kali Charan Hembram in Santali and Sri Ishwar Moorjani in Sindhi. ♦ For creative non-fiction, Dr. Shashi Tharoor in English was awarded ♦ For the autobiography, Dr. Vijaya in Kannada was awarded and for biography, Prof. Shafey Kidwai in Urdu won the award.
