The 20th Edition of Hornbill Festival began at Naga Heritage Kisama in Nagaland

It is annually held from 1 – 10 December. The first festival was held in 2000.

The festival organized by Nagaland Government is an annual tourism promotional event to

showcase the state’s traditional and rich cultural heritage in all its ethnicity, diversity and

grandeur.

The Objective is to encourage inter-tribal interaction and to promote cultural heritage of

Nagaland.

Highlights of the Hornbill Festival will witness cultural performance of different tribes of

Nagaland and Northeastern States, indigenous games, city tour, night carnival, art exhibition,

photo-fest and many more.

One of the major highlights of this festival is the Hornbill International Rock Festival where local

and international rock bands perform.

The Union Home Minister inaugurated the hugely popular Hornbill Festival 2018 in Kohima, coinciding with the Formation Day of Nagaland.

Hornbill Festival offers unique opportunity for states to interact and exhibit their cultural heritage in the true spirit of “Ek Bharat, Shrestha Bharat”.

Significance of Nagaland Geographically:

Nagaland is geographically located at the vantage point.

It is the gateway to the South-East Asia.

North-East is the pivot of our Government’s ‘Act East’ Policy.

Why was Hornbill festival launched?

Hornbill Festival was launched by the Government of Nagaland in

December 2000 to encourage intertribal interaction and to promote

cultural heritage of the state. Hornbill Festival showcases a mélange of

cultural displays under one roof.

IN NEWS JNANPITH AWARD

EXAM POINT OF VIEW: GS Prelims and GS I – Culture

Eminent Malayalam poet Akkitham Achuthan Namboothiri, popularly known as Akkitham, has been chosen for the 55th Jnanpith Award.

A Padma Shri awardee, he has won several literary accolades including the Sahitya Akademi Award (1973), Kerala Sahitya Akademi Award (1972 and 1988), Mathrubhumi Award etc

Jnanpith Award

It is given by Bharatiya Jnanpith, a literary and research organization based in Delhi.

It is given annually to an author for their “outstanding contribution towards literature”.

It is bestowed only on Indian writers writing in Indian languages included in the Eighth Schedule

to the Constitution of India and English.

There are no posthumous conferral. Also only works published during the preceding twenty

years is considered for the award.

The award consists of cash prize is ₹11 lakh and a Bronze replica of Saraswati, the Hindu goddess

of knowledge and wisdom.

Bharatiya Jnanpith presents the Jnanpith Award for the year 1988 to Dr. C. Narayana Reddy for his

outstanding contribution to Indian literature during the period 1968-82.

World AIDS Day is observed on 1 December

Theme:

The theme of the 2019 World AIDS Day is Communities Makes The

difference. The theme provides an opportunity to recognize the

essential role that communities have played and continue to play in the

AIDS response at the local, national and international levels.

History:

The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV and AIDS (UNAIDS ) took the lead on campaigning

for World AIDS Day from 1994-2004. A study reported that 37.9 million people globally were living

with HIV and 23.3 million people are accessing antiretroviral therapy. The report also said that

1.7 million people became newly infected with HIV. 7,70,000 people died from AIDS-related

illnesses.

Thailand elected as a member of the World Heritage Committee.

It was selected during the 22nd session of the

General Assembly of States Parties to the World Heritage

Convention in Paris. The representatives from 193 countries

cast their votes to fill nine vacant seats on the 21-member

World Heritage Committee.. The term would end in 2023.

World Heritage Committee:

The World Heritage Committee meets once every year. The committee consists of

representatives from 21 member states to the convention elected by the United Nations General

Assembly

strike range Brahmos supersonic cruise missile.

The supersonic cruise missile was test-fired in the

Arabian Sea.

BrahMos:

♦ BrahMos is a medium-range supersonic cruise

missile

♦ It can be launched from ships, aircraft, or land.

Background:

♦ In September 2019, the BrahMos missile was successfully test-fired from ITR,

Chandipur in Odisha.

♦ In May 2019, the IAF successfully fired the BrahMos air version missile from Su-30

MKI fighter aircraft. It was of range 300km. The air-launched BrahMos missile is a 2.5-

tonne supersonic air to surface cruise missile. It was developed by BAPL.

Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind has filed a review petition against the Supreme Court's Ayodhya verdict,

highlighting few errors in the judgement. The Muslim body stated that the apex court, by giving

the disputed land to the Hindu parties, had condoned their illegal act of destroying the Babri

Mosque.

Saudi Arabia recently became the first Arab nation to assume the G20 Presidency. The Kingdom

took over the presidency from Japan. Saudi Arabia will now host world leaders for the G20

Summit on November 21-22, 2020.

The International Slavery Abolition Day is observed every year on 02 December. This day is

celebrated to spread awareness about ending human trafficking and exploitation of humans.

World AIDS Day is observed every year worldwide on December 1, 2019 to make people aware of

HIV infection. In August 1987, it was celebrated globally for the first time.
