Do The Best You ConLeave The Rest to GodSometimes at nigh t when President

Eisenhower is tired and perhaps mightbe justified in being worried, Ike getsinto bed and says something like this,Lord, I ve done the best I can today, and I m g ra te fu l for y ou r Help. Doubtless I muffed a few . You t ake overf ro m h ere .

And, added the Presiden ts wife,he just turns over and goes to sleep.

Pres iden t E ise nh ow er k nows t h a tGod is w ith him while he is working, and he also knows t h a t God work s onwhile he sleeps. That is real faithand real prayer. A wonderful secretof life is simply to do the best youcan, with God s help , and then, whenyou have done your best, to put it allin God s hand s and t r u s t in H im t h a teverything will come out all right.

    Dear Friends in Christ,The pen begins to write; the ar ticle is re-read; no pe that s no good ;

into the trash; beg in aga in ; and thus i t goes on and on when we a re try in gt o d r a f t t h e b u ll et in i nt o i t s f inal f o r m We n e v e r cease to b e a m a z e d a tour Father s goodness, and your fai th and t r u s t in th is work, but to e xp re ssi t in words so you will understand is mighty hard to do. Since our returnlast July our monthly budget has been on top or just below the 500 neededto func tio n properly. You all have been just wonderful and we thank yousincerely from our h ea rts .

There are always unexpected th ings aris ing t h a t require extra moneyabove the bu dget and so f a r you have gone the 2nd mile with us, and forthat we are also thankful. I know, from personally know ing many of oursupporters, that many haven t much to give, but that they gave becausethey loved tosee the church spread. Many churches have also gone theextra distance with us financially. All we know to do is say, Thanks forseeing the work through another year.

Annually from February-April we plunge away down f inancial lyhelpus this year not to take the plunge, huh?

We still need 500 to pay the blood money they took from us on theold jalopy for customs. This is the final debt of 1957 and we tried hard toeliminate i t but i t had tattle tale grey and wouldn t rub out before thes u n s e t o n 1957.

I m glad you all are over there sometimes because if you tried to keepup with us each day here, you too would be living every day on nerves. We try to main ta in and run a big business (the Lord s); write out sermonsand work and study over them a f t e r translation; Hazel run the house, takecare of the girls; and toge ther , we study language; do shopping; go to class;writ e l et te rs ; do the oflSce work; etc. We will never live to a ripe old agebecause our boilers will blow first. I know, you have problems and worriestoo , and believe us, we would rather hear yours and pray with you overthem than have to always tell you ours. The Lord has to hear ours somuch, thought maybe His load would be lessened if we let you hear ourups-and-downs, in-and-outs. Really people you have all been marvelous andwe are hoping that we will have all eternity to reminisce over these thingsthat were important at the time. Enough for now God bless you eachand every one.

Yours in Him Always,Bob, Hazel, Jeanne, Joan

NOTHEROn a rather cold blustery afternoon

late in December ano ther young manbecame a new crea ture in Christ . Ibelieve (and this is another of our manygoals during 1958) that before the yea rIf you have writte n us re cently and

as yet have no answer, please writeagain because some of our mail isfinding its way into other P.O. boxesand some I m sure isn t being returned.Anytime you write and don t hearwithin 6 weeks from the day of posting, write again because your mail didn tget to us.

AIN'T IT THE TRUTH?The stinger of a bee is only .03125

inches long. The rest of the 12 inchesis pure imagination.

Wouldn t people scream if they hadto pay the preacher as much for themarriage as they do the lawyer for thed ivo rce ?

Around 150 yearly tax is due oneverything imaginable in March. Will you be one of those who helpskeep the budge t on the level so thiscan be paid?

HRISTI Nends we wil l have his Brother andMother both obeying Christ in Scriptural baptism (both having been sprinkledpreviously); and there is now the likelypossibility that we may even gain hisFather who heus become very friendlyand kind toward us and the church.Pray earnestly for this family that theywalk in this life together in Christ sothere will be no permanent separationupon death. Another young lad hasalready told us of his desire for unitingwith Christ and His chu rch. I thinkthat soon now we will gain a few morefor the Lord.

Will you earnestly pray for all ofus in Nagoya Christian Mission sowe might be useful instruments inHis hands

Because we got at a gallup (us and Davises too) most of the time andMr. Maruki is also carrying the load now of 2 men we deemed it wiseand advisable a t th is t im e to invest in an old rench enaul t fo r an ex t ramivSsion veh ic le. (Now don't anybody get exci ted because this is the cheapest2nd hand car in Japan.) We are paying for half the vehicle and Davisesfor other half o ver the next 8 months. It costs around 450, and we allare agreed it will pay for itself in no time. Mr. Maruki will drive it . Letme explain what he does in a weeks time. He has a full t ime job 5 daysa week; teaches Tuesday and Thursday nights in the Preache r T ra in ingSchool, and interprets for me during my two c la sses on the same nights;tra nsla te s se rmons for Howard and me; interprets Saturday nights inyoung peoples class; preaches at l east twice on Sunday; t eaches two SundaySchool c lasses ; and all of this will carry him many hundreds of mileseach week on buses and street cars and eats up hours upon hours ofvaluable time. Mr. Maruki is the Japanese leveling force in NagoyaChristian Mission. Without him?? ?? well you try to imagine.

This Is the year of the DOG in Japan, but I'll be switched if we aim to go to thedogs during 1958. This is THE year for Nagoya Christian Mission. With God's helpand yours, Mukojima-Gotanjo church is going to have a church building by November intime for their 6^ anniversary date. We have several nibbles from adult men now andwith a permanent meetin' house I'm sure we will land them. To delay any longer isto have our bait stolen by Satan and the opportunity to start winning family men lostpermanently: We have faith I'm sure it will be tried many times during this doggyyear but if we take a defeatist attitude we have no business out here any longer. The prospects look real good for the work now, and all of us in the Nagoya family aregoing to do everything Scripturally possible to nail things down to insure stronger andlarger church bodies.

One statement was to the effect we were asking the churches to payour debts for us; debts they did not makeo In a strict sense of theword this may be true, but we have never considered this oi^ personalworko Instead, it is our view that we have been xn joined force withyou at home to preach the gospel in Nagoya carrying out Christ s instructions in Matt 28:19-20o We do not feel our reward for the accomplishments here to be any greater than you who sent us and support thwork th ru your money and prayers

n Advisory Committee has worked very well for some missionaries, and we too, would welcome such a committee provided that co^itteewere a Board of Elders However a Planning Committee to plan thework and expenditures of the mission would necessarily have to visitthe field for a long enough period of time to become acquainted withthe problems and needs of the field Of course have always welcomedthe advice of any one who would send i t and in most cases i t hasv/orked to the advantage of the Lord s work hereIt was brought to our attention that those in our supportingchxirches had trouble in securing material enough for study groupsabout the work in Nagoya This is no one s fault but our own andone we hope to correct very soon The Central Christian Chiu:ch inOklahoma City has offered to help us in getting such materials out

The Central Christian Church, Oklahoma City, sent word they wouldattempt to raise S600 to pay for the Nagashima buildxngo They alsooffered to help by mimeographing the study materials to be sent to thechurches. We give God thanks daily for these co-laborers who have ^carried the heaviest portion of the financial lead from the beginningof our work. Some of the elders and members of Central were our BibleSchool teachers thru childhood and teens, so they have a double partin the gospel teaching i n Nagoya.

Our news letter this time brings some good news, some bad news, and animportant change in our work. So first the good newsTwo years ago the work was opened in Nagashima. The pspel had never beenpreached in the town before, and most of the people heard for the firsttime that Christ had died for them. These two years have ftion of the little prefab building and the steady acceptance of the churchas a part of the community. n the second Sunday xn September, HowardpreacLd at Nagashima and at the invitation three young people ame for-IZTto make tLir confessions. The next Sunday Mr, Yoshxda preached andone more young lady came forward to join the otherbantismal service. These four confessions were the result of the summerevSngelistio meetings. Another young man from the Hukojima Church wherethe Chambers work) was buried with his Lord at the sape time, making fbaptisms in all. Pictured above are the five young people after they becaL Christians. The second picture is Howard, Mr. Tamaguohithe Higashi Church), the four young people from theyoung man baptized at the Higashi Church after camp, andminister of the Nagashima Chm^oh . The third H church TwLreattended the baptismal service. They came from the Higashithe baptisms were held), the Nagashima Church, The 1^the Moriyama Church started by the ChambersOur joy was so great when these placed their hand in t twe wLh each cnf of you could have been here to share it with us Attimes every missionary suffers moments of discouragement and dispair, just as you do at home, when it seems the Word of Christ is Reeded. Then young people such as these step out and accept Him and l ldoubts, and discouragements are wiped away by an indescribable 3^^in its-place is a new realization that the gospel is the POwer of ^od unto- salvation-^ please-pray with-us^or-these- young people as they-set theirfeet upon th e way Christ has preparedoIn our l a s t news le tte r we made some very definateplanting of the church at Kanie. Perhaps we were guiltyof Christ, or perhaps He had other plans for us. Everychurch at Kanie was blocked. Three times we had a place to ings and had made final arrangements, only to have the people who ownedthe property telephone us and withdraw the permission they had given. Each one gave reasons that obviously were not the real ones. One of theJapanese preachers commented, These are only excuses . The native preaches expreLed the belief that r he Buddhists behind the scenes ere actively opposing the planting of Christ s Church in Kanie In all our

--yp riences me have never met such solid opposition. One preacher saxdmaybe me should follow Jesus instructions in Matt. 10:1^, and shakethe dust, of Kanie from our feet. Perhaps this wouxd be Cteist s answer, perhaps not. Anyway we must wait upon the Lord and His leading. Thiswas a great disappointment to us but it is not all a dark picture, forwe can take stock of our evangelistic efforts and f.hus be better prepared,if Christ so directs, to launch out in another direction and Perhapsif He leads, return again some day to Kanie to preach His glad tidings.Changing times and conditions sometimes make it necessary to change ourmethods of work. Such is the situation we new face. In December 1950,sailed from America and entered Japan as a part of the Osaka ChristianMission, The Osaka missionaries extended us this p,rivelege because theAmerican occupational authorities required us to come as a part of anestablished mission. Six months la ter we were able to open the work inNagcya... thus the Nagoya Christian Mission came into heingc In^April^l95^Bob and Hazel Chambers joined us in the work here., both families usingfhe name Nagoya Christian Mission^ because the city of Nagoya was thebounds of our v/orko Bob and Hazel, at least for the present time, havechosen to accept the many opportunities this city of a million^and a halfpresents 5 v;hile our own work has become in part far from the limits ofNagcye Nagashlma, 15 miles distant is even in a different prefecturec\Thus we find by using the name Nagoya Christian Mission we are drawingfthe rircle too small and excluding the Nagashima peopleo Japan is dividedinto several designated areaso The Japanese name for this area includingSagoya and many miles in each direction Is Chubu Nihon , or CentralJapan area^ e feel~th^ch^grng ~nature of our work requires us to extendthe name limit of our work to this same Japanese name So we the Davises)in the near future will change the name of our work from Nagoya ChristianMission to the C.=>ntral Janan Mi5siQn \ As far as any legal action inthis change ? and as for the relationship betweenthe Churches5 Christians and missionarieswe foresee no importantchanges of any IcLndo However, i f changes should be required here on thefield they will be taken care of in joint meetings like all past problemsand plans of work have been handled^.7e hope this change in the name of our work vjill cause no inconvenienceamong you at home who share in this work with usq Our work and responsibi l i t ies will remain as they were with the exception of what we feelwill be a better relationship between the churches and people with whomwe work as they become included on an equal standingoThank you again for the wonderful way in which you are supporting ourwork here in Japano You have made i t possible for us to serve Him tothe fullest of our abil i ty as you provide the material means AND weknow a t t imes the sac r i f i ce for you i s greats Pray for us as we prayfo r you^

CENTRAL JMEMN MlTHAT THE LAND OF THE RISING SU N MIGHT COM E TO KNOW THE RISEN SON

HOWARD KATHRYN DAVIS - BOX 19 CHIKUSA, NAGOYA, JAPAN CLYDE VIRGINIA BIRNEY SUBLETLE, KANSAS

Dear r i ends i n hr i s t 5 v'We often hear.the question, What price, Christi^d^y? We wouldlike to share with you the story of one of our young Japanesepreache r s oKubota-Sah, who was converted and entered Bible College ^in Japan, came to us two weeks ago with a very disturbingproblem His whole family wanted him to give up the ministry andenter a business they had planned for hifflo In Japan, ^ ^amly meets and passes such a decision, it is almost like a law thatperson abide by the family's decisiono The father delivered an(\ ultimatum -if Kubota San did not abide by the family s decision,- he would be- cut off from the familyhe would become as a son dead.On the other hand he would inherit a sum of about a million and ahalf yen for his business, which in Japan is a sizable fortuneo Hisfather would set him up in a business and even build the small storehe would need for the businesso The young man came to us and sai ,if he followed his familyIs^wishe s_he^ would be deprived of fatherservice to^Christ, for at least the next three years and maybe longeroVHis first concern, though, was; what would Christ have him do? e>We thrilled when he decided to break the strong bonds of custom andcontinue in the ministryo At the same time we were saddened thatsuch a decision had been passed upon him, separating him from. ^ familyo We discussed the ew Testament teaching on the subject, forvl the problem is as old as man's service to Christ, and we were thrill-^ ed with the faith of this one that chose the way of Christ and notthe way of worldly gainoThe first week in November, services will be held in theTsushimaa city of about one hundred thousand people. The Lord s

.-^iSaSd^eacr us to this city and to these people who need the gospel so badly. Please pray with us that in the years to come, this churchTOill become a great influence for Christ in Central JapanoKenny, like all small boys 'almost' three years old, is hard to keepin sight. Outside to play, and in five minutes he is no where to befound Usually a tour of our Japanese neighbor's homes find him joined in someone's family circle. e is more at home with the Japanesethan the Americans We were spending much time searching for him, then one of our Japanese neighbors hit upon an idea when Kenny comesto visit her, she hangs out a pink flag where- we can see. The lady isalone much of the time and says, Please let him stay I enjoy hisvisits . His Japanese speaking is improving too
