HE CHOSE THE HINISTRY

In the fa l l of 1958, the family of Kubota San decided that he should give up

the ministry and enter a business they had planned for him. In Japan such a decision

Kubota San was converted and entered Bible college during the Davis family s f i r s t

At last we have completed the journey we se t out upon, some six mon

mountain roads through the heavy rains,we arr ived j u s t a t dark.   found

tha t the freight company had l e f t the crates containing our re f r igera tor

washing Machine was s i t t ing four Inches deep in the mud Never the less

eve ry th ing turned out a i l r i gh t and we t:;ank God tha t He has opened the

doors for us to come to Nagoya to begin work among these people. I t willnot be possible to hold services in the place where we are now l iv ing

but we hope to begin bui lding our home and  m is s ion s t a t i on as soon as

funds are ava i lable . In the meantime we are seeking the leading of t^

Lord fo r a place to hold se rv i ces .

We owe a vote of thanks to our many fr iends and co- laborers in Ch

who have helped us in our time of need. Many have responded with praye

and funds, making i t possible for us to begin laying plans for our futui .

building project. May the Lord rich ly bless each of you made inquiry

regarding the surp lus army barracks and found tha t a l l tha t were avai l

CENTRAL JAPAN MISSION

Dear Fr i ends i n   hr i s ty

TH NK you once again for the wonderful way you have continued to support the work of Christ here in Central Japano Through your sharing

and sacrifice we have been able to preach the gospel for another monthwith no financial difficultieso We pray God will ric hly bless youo

Some vime ago we wrote in these pages the story of Kubota San, one ofcir young preachers who was made to choose between his family andserving Christ o At the time.j we thought i t was a great sacrifice hehad made for the sake of preaching the gospelo For sure i t was agreat test of faith in the precious promises of Christo Recently.^

Kubota San became i l l and in his time of need his father took himback into the family and cared for him through his illness« Now,Kubota San has a renewed and stronger tie with his family while atthe same time he has been strengthened in the preaching of ChristyThis made us realize anew that as humans we cannot really sacrificefor Christg for without fail He restores and blesses a hundred foldfor each bit we can giveo V e know all of you who prayed for thisyoung soldier of the cross will rejoice with us in this particular

blessnng of Godo

We would ask your prayers again for another of our young preachers,Yoshida San, who was told by the doctors that he had contacted T^oBcand would have to suspend his Bible College training.. He is st.i.j.1carrying on his church work at Nagashiraa, but he needs your prayers

Mr. Maruki, a man having several years experience in the ministry inNagoya, has had a great part in leading the other five men in.o thministry. These men are taking over the responsibility 'for this next year when we will be in America, Each °buropendent congregation, planning and carrying out most of its own work, but the ministers have worked out a program where they will all sharetogether, and Maruki San the oldest Japanese minister will be in aresponsible position to see that the work is f edbe in our absence. We are grateful to God for suchmen to labor with in Japan. Please remember these servants of Christi n your prayerso

A large bui ld ing nex t doo r b lew over against this building breaking the eaves so nowa l l r a in water from both bu il di ng s d ra in s in to the church bui ld ing. This i s causing

the f locr to buckle as much as 5 or 6 inches in some places.

At Nagashima the church building, with a l l of i t s contents was completely washed

away. All that remains i s the foundation blocks. These were found by probing witha pole from a boat. Most of the vil lage i s s t i l l under water. The rice crops justready to be harvested were a l l los t And because this i s ocean sa l t wate r cover ingthe island the people th ere s ay the land will not produce to any extent for at leastte n y ea rs and not as it did before for a whole generat ion.

We are very thankful to report though, that although more than 5000 l ives werelo s t as fa r as we knew not even one Christian was ki l led Surely God must have been

watching over them. We are saddened, however, over th e death of some who were regularin attendance but had not yet accepted Chris t as t h e i r Savior.

The Chris t ians in Nagoya have been working very hard to take re l ie f goods to the

At Nagashima whare the church bui lding was completely washed away and the suffer ingwas so great , the Chris t ians missed worshipping together only th e day af te r the

typhoon which struck during the night Saturday. The very next Lord's Day services

were he ld  t th e home o f Kato San one of th e l a d i e s who is n o t a Ch r i s t i a n b u t who

there and also others who have not yet accepted Chris t , We are thankful to God fo r

Cttie day as Kato San was going around in a boat she found the cross t h a t had been

on top of the Nagashima Church building. This i s the only thing t ha t has been found

of tha t bui lding or i t s contents . Kato San took the cross to her hcme and since her

home was spared she has opened it to be used by the Christians and those who attend

se rv ices a s a r e l i e f c en te r a s well as a place fo r worship.

Dear Chr i s t i an Fr i ends :

I t has been 7 weeks since Typhoon Vera swept across Japan leaving suffer ing and des

truction beyond descr ip t ion , espec ia l ly in the Central Japan area. Much work has been doneand some progress has been made but condi t ions are still unbel ievable . People are l iving on

roof tops , in comers of a t t i c s with the i r houses washed out under them and the roofs being

supported only by unsturdy frame work, some in t iny shacks, others in school buildings orwith those whose homes a re  t l st l i v e ab l e .

The death to l l now stands a t more than ^^00 with more than 1000 s t i l l missing. Justa few days ago more than 80 bodies were recovered a t Nagashima, Bodies now being found must

be put in to plas t ic bags under v;ater bef or e t hey can be taken from the water . Three pi t s

have been dug in the school yard and th e bodies are burned in these pi t s . Cremation is the

practice in Japan and some ashes are taken b y the fam ily o f the deceased. The bod ies b eing

recovered now are beyond identif icat ion so people who have los t loved ones tha t were notfound now go and take scsne ashes from the p i t s thinking tha t one of those may have been one

o f t h e i r l oved ones .

Some have a sked about the ef fec t th is d isas te r has had upon the new Chris t ians , To

answer th is I would l ike to r e f e r to a l e t t e r J an e t r ec ei ved from a young man in Nagashima

who was baptized only a few months ago. The English used may seem ra ther strange but it i s

typ ica l of the J apanes e u se of the Engli sh l anguage . This young man said,  The disas te r

damaged greatly. But we, a ll church members are never disappointed, or rather, we are happierthan before when we are singing some hymns together on Sundays a t Kato San s house, and we

f ind ourselves as i f we were in heaven. Most people who were suffered are much disappointedor always very angry. But we are always happy in Jesus name, I know a l l the Christians in

America are always praying fo r us, V e were great ly surprised and very grateful Tdien Mr, Davis

came to Japan on puipose. (Because of the typhoon,) We are indeed very happy, Howard says

that those who were only babes in Christ have grown very quickly and are now mature Christ ians

doing very cOTimendable work,

have a week—10 days or two weeks to go. I t i s a nasty job and about t he h arde st woikl ive ever done^ but  t has a reward beyond a ll the work. The people of the town are

working along with us now and of course, we a re get ti ng personally acquainted with every

one. I have never been thanked so many times by so many people. The g reeti ng to us inNagashima i s not »Good Day but  Thank YouJ .

The newspapers  Mainichi , Asahi , and Chubu Nihon (as one man told me) are in competit ion for stor ies and pictures of our work and daily progress. Even the Nagoya ci ty

papers and Osaka papers carry the stor ies have been in ar t ic les in several papers

every day since we s tarted a week ago Sunday.

The N.H.K. news broadcasts have been mentioning us on the radio and they want to build

a special program and interview this week. Of course, they give me more credit than Iearned. The whole story of ny return has been published and that par t th ey got fromthe people in the town.

As tory in today s  Mainichi was about the town and how they were without hope anddidn t know where to s t a r t— The Christians came in even before the water was goneand began cleaning up the town for them. From this they received the hope and wil l to dig out and s ta r t over again. They said,   I f the Christians and the AmericanMissionary could do such unpleasait work then we had to help . And they are helping

hour fo r hour as we work up to our boot tops in the black sl iny muck that has rot tedfor 5 weeks under tiie salt water. There is eveiything imaginable, including decayedfood, tatami (rice straw mats), broken dishes, furniture—and personal things of a lldescr ip tions, t oys, tr inkets , books, pictures, clothing. I t is a heartbreaking taskfor them to see so many of the i r things destroyed.

The Christians not only in Nagashima b ut also in the Nagoya churches have worked daily

to bring re l ie f to the needy and eveiything has been done in the name of th e church. Assoon as land can be obtained in Nagashima a quonset hut wil l be erected to be used as a

place of worship and a relief center for a ll of Nagashima.   are indeed very grateful toGeorge Beckman for giving th is quonset hut for only the cost of transporting  t to Nagashima.

Howard asked me to e3q)ress his appreciation as well as th e appreciation of the Japanesepeople for the Christian love you have shown to them by your concern for their welfare. Thevery genej oujs gi f t s you_sent have been gra te fu l ly received and are, bejlng inrayerfully used

There was a day of great rejoicing recently in Nagashima The school children,

who had been taken to other towns after the typhoon so they could continue theireducation, were returned to their homes. They had been gone about two months sothere was much happiness in being re-united with their families. The parents andthe children expressed their appreciation to Hovrard and the Christians fo r dealingthe town so the children could return. Some 200 orphaned children were not returned to Nagashima.

As soon as the quonset hut, given by George Beckman, reached Nagashima workers

s tar ted putt ing i t togettier. There were no f loors or windows but th es e have been

purchased. However services were conducted in the building without the floors orwindows. The Christians as well as the Sund^ School children were very eager tomeet in the ir new building. The Dedication Service was to have been held December

13th with George Beckman as guest speaker.

The lower par t of Nagashima and many other towns are s t i l l flooded and thousands

of people are s t i l l homeless.   t will be a long, long time before conditions willbe even near normal throughout Central Japan but much progress has been made.

Many of the Japanese people have ejqpressed their appreciation for the many waysyou folk in America have helped them. They have learned something of th e Churchand Christian love t hrough your gi f t s and your prayers. V e can find no words to

t e l l you tha t is in our hearts because of a l l th e wonderful wsys you have workedand given to help those we have learned to love so much in Central Japan. Thankyou very .very much seems so i nadequat e but these words come from our hear t s

Neither can we find words to express our feelings to Rogers and Ople Stevens forthe i r fa i th fu l services. They receive no salary for the i r la bo rs as forwarding

secretar ies , but do the i r work as a service to God. Since Typhoon Vera struckand Howard returned to Japan, Ople*s services have been invaluable. Because ofthe wonderful response her work has increased many times and bes id es r egu la rcorrespondence she has helped with each news l e t t e r and in many other ways. ToRogers and Ople we take th is opportunity to say  Thankyou for everything, you

are t r idy a blessing to us and the work in Central Japan .
