The Two-Party System
The United States has a two-party system
2 main political parties and smaller parties that have little impact
Democratic Party (liberal)- greater role for federal government for providing social programs
Republican Party (conservative)- supports reducing federal government in operating social programs and support social programs run by state and local government and nongovernmental organizations.

Advantages of the Two-Party System
Democrat and Republican parties have had almost equal strength since the Civil War
Both parties try to appeal to the general public
Neither party favors drastic change because it would be unappealing and they would lose voters

Multiparty System
Many European countries have a multiparty system
Parties form coalitions to gain votes
Coalition- agreement between two or more political parties to work together
![Page 10: Day 24](https://reader036.vdocument.in/reader036/viewer/2022062704/5562c65fd8b42a595e8b55ab/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
One-Party Government
One-party system- one political party controls the government.
Law forbids formation of all other political parties.
Dictatorships and totalitarian governments

Third Parties
Third parties can impact the US by taking votes away from Republicans or Democrats
1912-Teddy Roosevelt took votes from William Taft (R) and helped Woodrow Wilson(D) win.
1992- Ross Perot took 19% of the vote and Bill Clinton won the election.
Some 3rd parties influence change through their ideas
Populist party(1890’2) influenced the 17th amendment that says the people directly vote for US Senators.
