January 16, 2020 Dear Student and Parent(s): I am very excited that you or your daughter/son has an interest in becoming a North Star Dazzler for the upcoming school year. Being a member of the dance team can be very rewarding and very time consuming, and I am pleased you are ready to take part. Please read ALL of the information in this packet. Also, please fill out the provided teacher recommendations and hand those out to five (5) teachers as soon as you can. These must be current teachers from this school year, and preferably from 1st semester. Current 2nd semester teachers are fine, but they MUST be able to answer all questions fairly and accurately. Please avoid giving recommendations to administrators, counselors, or other non-teaching staff members, as the questions will not apply. All students must have five (5) complete recommendations to tryout. You also need to complete the enclosed Medical and Parental Release forms and return them to me on or before the first day of tryout practice. These forms must be completed and returned before you or your daughter/son will be able to practice on Tuesday, March 17, 2020. We look forward to meeting you on March 17. Sincerely,

Erin Murray Erin Murray Dazzler Coach

Dear Prospective North Star Dancers and Parents:

North Star is thrilled that you wish to become part of an activity that helps set the standard for school spirit among its students! In this packet, you’ll find a brief explanation of the commitment your daughter/son will face as a Lincoln North Star Dazzler. It is very important that you are all aware of these commitments. LNS administration, faculty, and the dance coach want everyone to understand what is involved in participation on a dance team. Please take note of the following:

A student will not be allowed to participate in try-outs or practices without the appropriate forms turned in. (see pages 8-15 for forms).

Squad members will practice up to five times a week before school/after school; however, this schedule does not limit the amount of practice time that may be needed.

Personal schedules must be arranged around practice and performance times (i.e. appointments, work, social engagements, etc.)

Dance team members may participate in one Fall sport. Dance team members may participate in any Spring sports with few conflicts with dance team. Dancers who participate in athletics MUST stay in contact with their coach and captains to make sure they are up-to-date on announcements and squad responsibilities (i.e. games, performances, etc.)

Certain facial piercings, hair color, and visible tattoos will not be acceptable. Facial piercings will need to be removed or covered whenever in dance attire at any time. Tattoos must be covered whenever in dance attire at any time. Hair color will need to be a “natural” color whenever in dance attire at any time. Any questions, please ask.

Requirements to Try-out:

A dance team member must be enrolled in, and pass, a minimum of 20 hours (four classes) for the semester prior to trying out.

A dance team member must possess a minimum GPA of 2.5 (semester/cumulative) or equivalent to a C+ average at the end of the 1st semester of the current school year.

All former Dazzlers must have NO outstanding balances from previous years. Must not have been removed or quit at any time during a previous school year.

Requirements to Maintain Membership:

A dancer must be enrolled in a minimum of 20 hours (four classes) for each semester he/she is a member of the squad. NSAA requires 20 hours, but it is encouraged that you take 25 hours unless it is 2nd semester of senior year.

A dancer must earn a minimum 2.5 GPA at the end of each grading term he/she is a member of the squad.

Dancer MUST have an athletic physical on file before the beginning of the current school year. (North Star Physical Night—Late May before school is out.) Physicals obtained BEFORE May 1 will NOT be accepted.

Removal from the squad will result if the above academic requirements are not met or if the dancer does not fulfill his/her duties and responsibilities to the squad (see below).

General Rules: Dancers will follow the same rules and citizenship expectations as athletes at North Star. Detailed uniform guidelines, absence policies, and attitude expectations will be discussed in depth

once the official squads are selected. Parents and squad members will be required to sign and abide by the set rules.

Guidelines, expectations, and other policies, once set, will allow little room for exceptions and flexibility.

Examples of constitution rules and guidelines or why a squad member may be suspended from dancing responsibilities include:

*Unexcused absences from practice/games/meets (i.e. hair appointments, work, babysitting, social engagements, etc.) *Inappropriate behavior during practice/games/meets/school (i.e. tardiness, skipping, or

leaving early, talking back, lack of effort, insubordination, etc.) *Inappropriate behavior towards others including, but not limited to coaches, teachers,

administrators, squad members and other students (i.e. talking back, swearing, bullying, truancy, acts of violence, etc.)

*Failure to wear the appropriate uniform to school or games *Failure to meet the academic requirements *Illegal activity (i.e. underage drinking, smoking, drug use, committed acts of

misdemeanor/felony charges on or off school property)

UNLESS THERE IS A MAJOR SCHEDULE CONFLICT DUE TO PREVIOUSLY ARRANGED PLANS, ALL DANCERS ARE ASKED TO ATTEND CAMP IN JULY, BUT IT IS NOT MANDATORY.

Uniform and Camp Costs Uniforms: The uniforms are ordered in the spring and bills will be given to each squad member as soon as the clothes are ordered and costs finalized. Lincoln Public Schools has a Fee Waiver Program for students who qualify for the free/reduced lunch program. Applications are filled out electronically, please see the athletic office or the coach for more information. All information is kept strictly confidential. Camp: The Universal Dance Association (UDA) provides dance team material from experienced and trained professionals. This material is used during the school year. The camp is not school sponsored. The squad will arrange for transportation to and from the camp. Costs for the camp should be expected to be $400-$420. This includes the cost of room and board, meals, tuition, and transportation. Cost Examples (based on items ordered in 2015):

Dance Dress $150 Warm-up Jacket $50 Skirt $65 Camp Clothes $150-$200 Halter top $90 Bows/Accessories $30 Long Sleeve Top $215 Bags $60 Navy Leggings $47 Tennis Shoes $80 Jazz Shoes $40 Miscellaneous $40-$120 Poms $42

Last year, a first year dancer’s total cost was approximately $1,000.

There will be an opportunity to purchase previously owned uniform parts from past/graduating members. These items will be available at the mandatory parent/dance team meeting AFTER tryouts to try on.

**Please keep in mind that cost does vary from year to year. These clothes are worn an average of once or twice a week!

There will be one parent meeting to start out the year at Lincoln North Star High School. We will discuss fundraising and other squad issues during this time. The beginning of the year parent meeting is TO BE DETERMINED.
