Direct Contact: touching a rodent, being bit by a rodent, or coming into contact with a rodent's feces, urine, saliva or hair/dander.

Indirect Contact: usually results from being bitten by a flea, tick, mite or mosquito that has also bitten an infected rodent.

Protecting yourself from any contact with rodents, direct or indirect, is challenging. Rodent feces, urine, saliva, hair, and dander are very small and hard to notice until you have already been exposed. Avoiding indirect contact is even more challenging as fleas, ticks, mites, and mosquitoes are very common and difficult to control.
