Grading Scale and GPA Calculation

Career and Technical Education (CTE) The Orange Technical College Dual Enrollment Program is an acceleration program that allows high school students to take postsecondary technical education coursework and simultaneously earn credit toward a high school diploma, a career certificate, an industry certification, and in some cases, college credit. Through our Career and Technical Education (CTE) Department, Winter Park HS students have access to 9 CTE programs on the high school campus and over 25 dual enrollment programs at the technical college.

International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme The International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme is unique in that it provides an interdisciplinary education leading to a diploma which is recognized throughout the world. Students pursue a prescribed curriculum and teachers provide interdisciplinary instruction and assessments whereby students study common topics, processes and materials across subject areas. The IB programme is designed for academically able and highly motivated students. Typically, students who enroll in the IB programmes are regular members of the student body and are active participants in extracurricular activities and athletics. Winter Park High School offers two IB programmes. The IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) and the IB Career-Related Programme (IBCP). Admission to these rigorous IB Programmes is based on grades, test scores and student interviews. To remain in the IB Programme each year students must have a cumulative 3.0 unweighted GPA. In addition, WPHS has also opened access to a selection of IB Elective courses to all students.

Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors Courses: There is no limit to the number of Advanced Placement or Honors courses a student may take. Winter Park High School offers thirty Advanced Placement courses. We also now offer access to the AP Capstone Diploma Program. This program provides the opportunity for students to develop critical thinking, research, and communication skills. Students in the program will complete two AP courses: AP Seminar and AP Research. These two courses are uniquely aligned with core habits of mind, practices and skills that research has identified as critical to college and career success. Upon successful completion of both AP Capstone courses, four additional AP courses, and a level 3 or higher on the respective AP exams, students will receive the AP Capstone Diploma.

Dual Enrollment (DE) Winter Park High School and OCPS have articulation agreements with University of Central Florida, University of Florida, Valencia State College, Embry Riddle University (NJROTC Aviation), and Orange Technical College for students to receive college credit while completing their graduation requirements. 177 students are enrolled in DE programs.

National Merit Scholarship Program The class of 2020 had 20 students earn recognition with 4 National Merit Finalists and one National Merit Corporate Finalist from among 50,000 students.

Class of 2020 Post-Graduation Over 80% of the class of 2020 was accepted to a two or four-year college or university. The talented class of 2020 was offered over $8,000,000 in scholarship dollars, and 246 of our students received Bright Futures scholarships.

Winter Park High School Advisory Council (SAC)

Continuous improvement is a priority at Winter Park High School. Our School Advisory Council studies the school’s performance trends and develops an annual plan to improve education in vital areas such as student achievement, curriculum, safety, and discipline. The SAC also assists the principal when planning for the upcoming year’s budget. Plans are available to the public and accessible through the Florida Department of Education’s website

(CIMS). SAC meetings are public and occur one night per month during the school year. SAC members are elected annually by school parents, and attendance is required. Some notable SAC projects include the ‘Escape the Vape’ program designed to educate our students regarding the dangers of vaping. SAC also has a budget and, most recently, the council approved the purchase of numerous band and orchestra instruments in order to contine those programs safely during COVID . Let us know if this is an area in which you would like to get involved as we continually look for ways to improve Winter Park High School. You make a difference.

Contact Paul Maldonado ([email protected]) if you would like to join SAC.
