Download - Dear New Wildcats,
Dear New Wildcats, Welcome to Winter Park High School! Yes, you are now a Wildcat. We are excited that you are now a part of our family and hope that the following items will be beneficial as you transition to WPHS.
• Welcome Packet - We have included a lot of information in this welcome packet. Please take the time to read through it and become familiar with the many positive aspects of our comprehensive high school.
• 3 Keys to Student Success in High School – Focus on Academics, Challenge Yourself by taking rigorous courses, Get Involved in one or more of the many extra-curricular programs we offer. It’s important for every student to be ready to work hard on Day 1. We want to provide the opportunity for every individual student to create a high school resume that opens numerous doors for future success.
• Parental Involvement – If you are interested in getting involved as a parent, we have many volunteer opportunities. Aside from being an integral part of the extra-curricular activities in which your Wildcat gets involved, we always have room for volunteers on our School Advisory Council, PTSA, WPHS Foundation, and College & Career Center. Our parent volunteers are a huge reason we have sustained a decades-long tradition of excellence. More information for each one of the above mentioned groups is included in this packet.
• Parental Support – One of the best ways for you to support your Wildcat’s education is to have weekly goal-setting conversations. Stay connected to Skyward – use it as a tool to monitor grades and initiate conversations to help train your Wildcat to be organized and efficient.
• Stay Informed – We use email as a primary source for getting important information and reminders out to our families.
o Updated Contact Information - Please keep your contact information, both email and phone numbers, updated with our Student Services office.
o Weekly Electronic Newsletter – Text ‘WPHS’ to 22828 in order to subscribe. The newsletter is sent out every Sunday afternoon, providing you the opportunity to see important reminders, upcoming events, and individual/group recognitions.
Winter Park High School has a rich tradition of academic, athletic, and artistic excellence and you are now a part of that rich tradition! Again, welcome! Grading Scale and GPA Calculation
Career and Technical Education (CTE) The Orange Technical College Dual Enrollment Program is an acceleration program that allows high school students to take postsecondary technical education coursework and simultaneously earn credit toward a high school diploma, a career certificate, an industry certification, and in some cases, college credit. Through our Career and Technical Education (CTE) Department, Winter Park HS students have access to 9 CTE programs on the high school campus and over 25 dual enrollment programs at the technical college.
International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme The International Baccalaureate (IB) Programme is unique in that it provides an interdisciplinary education leading to a diploma which is recognized throughout the world. Students pursue a prescribed curriculum and teachers provide interdisciplinary instruction and assessments whereby students study common topics, processes and materials across subject areas. The IB programme is designed for academically able and highly motivated students. Typically, students who enroll in the IB programmes are regular members of the student body and are active participants in extracurricular activities and athletics. Winter Park High School offers two IB programmes. The IB Diploma Programme (IBDP) and the IB Career-Related Programme (IBCP). Admission to these rigorous IB Programmes is based on grades, test scores and student interviews. To remain in the IB Programme each year students must have a cumulative 3.0 unweighted GPA. In addition, WPHS has also opened access to a selection of IB Elective courses to all students.
Advanced Placement (AP) and Honors Courses: There is no limit to the number of Advanced Placement or Honors courses a student may take. Winter Park High School offers thirty Advanced Placement courses. We also now offer access to the AP Capstone Diploma Program. This program provides the opportunity for students to develop critical thinking, research, and communication skills. Students in the program will complete two AP courses: AP Seminar and AP Research. These two courses are uniquely aligned with core habits of mind, practices and skills that research has identified as critical to college and career success. Upon successful completion of both AP Capstone courses, four additional AP courses, and a level 3 or higher on the respective AP exams, students will receive the AP Capstone Diploma.
Dual Enrollment (DE) Winter Park High School and OCPS have articulation agreements with University of Central Florida, University of Florida, Valencia State College, Embry Riddle University (NJROTC Aviation), and Orange Technical College for students to receive college credit while completing their graduation requirements. 177 students are enrolled in DE programs.
National Merit Scholarship Program The class of 2020 had 20 students earn recognition with 4 National Merit Finalists and one National Merit Corporate Finalist from among 50,000 students.
Class of 2020 Post-Graduation Over 80% of the class of 2020 was accepted to a two or four-year college or university. The talented class of 2020 was offered over $8,000,000 in scholarship dollars, and 246 of our students received Bright Futures scholarships.

Scholarships and Financial Aid For aid based on financial need, students must complete the FAFSA. Use the FAFSA4Casterto predict your award level. Some schools will also require the CSS Profile. Scholarships and grants do not need to be repaid, whereas loans must be repaid, often with interest. Your college may be the greatest source for scholarships. Winter Park High School Advisory Council (SAC)
Continuous improvement is a priority at Winter Park High School. Our School Advisory Council studies the school’s performance trends and develops an annual plan to improve education in vital areas such as student achievement, curriculum, safety, and discipline. The SAC also assists the principal when planning for the upcoming year’s budget. Plans are available to the public and accessible through the Florida Department of Education’s website
(CIMS). SAC meetings are public and occur one night per month during the school year. SAC members are elected annually by school parents, and attendance is required. Some notable SAC projects include the ‘Escape the Vape’ program designed to educate our students regarding the dangers of vaping. SAC also has a budget and, most recently, the council approved the purchase of numerous band and orchestra instruments in order to contine those programs safely during COVID . Let us know if this is an area in which you would like to get involved as we continually look for ways to improve Winter Park High School. You make a difference.
Contact Paul Maldonado ([email protected]) if you would like to join SAC.
