Thursday 2 May, 2019 Dear Parents and Friends of SGS, It is SGS Fete and Markets week and you can feel the excitement in the air! This is an important occasion for our school as we come together, work beside each other for our school and for the wider community at this Horse Festival time. Our Fete Committee have been working hard behind the scenes to get everything in place for the day. Yvonne Clerke and Erryn Day are driving this process and their dedication is greatly appreciated. Yvonne was injured during the holiday period, which I am sure has added an extra complexity to this years event. She is soldiering on! I look forward to sharing in this day with everyone on Sunday. On Friday we will again have an Out of Uniform Day with a donation of something special for the Cake Stall or Tombola jars. Students and staff will be involved in the major set-up at the end of the day. We also have the parade floats being prepared by Staff for the School and The Yellow Cottage to add colour and fun to the Parade! Responding to the Horse Festival theme is always a fun challenge and enthuses the students who love the opportunity to participate in the Parade. Announcements Mrs Alice Forsythe has resigned her position in Communication with us to take up a position with Scone Equine Group at the end of the month. We wish her all the best in her new role and thank her for the great work she has done in the marketing and communication areas, especially the development of the Social Media platforms which give us so many opportunities to celebrate what is happening for students right across the school. Miss Felicity Dowdell has also resigned and will be moving to a teaching position in the Northern Territory, commencing in Term 3 this year. Miss Dowdell has shared her passion for learning and supported students with dedication and care. She has especially enabled our ENEX Students to experience wonderful learning opportunities. We wish her well as she moves to this new adventure. Sabbatical Leave For the next two weeks I will be on leave and Rev Nate Atkinson with be deputising in my absence. Please bring things to his attention, if needed. ANZAC Day We had an excellent representation at ANZAC Commemorations across the region last Thursday and valuable ANZAC Chapels on Monday. Thank you to all those who made the effort to represent as it shares a very positive message in our community. Our guest speaker on Monday, Seargent Benjamin Johnsen from the ADF spoke of sacrifice in a very real and personal manner. This sacrifice message gave an opportunity to link Jesussacrifice, that we celebrated at Easter, to the sacrifice he shared of those who served and often gave the ultimate sacrifice in war. Seargent Johnsen challenged the students to consider the sacrifices made for them by others that help them achieve on a daily basis. See you at the Fete and Markets! Paul Smart PRINCIPAL

From the Burrow - Primary News with Mr Saunders Welcome back to what will be another busy but rewarding term. I trust you had a lovely break and enjoyed the opportunity to recharge the batteries, ready to do it all over again. I always enjoy the reminder that a school doesn’t stop just because it’s the holidays. It is common for students and staff to find themselves representing SGS over the break. The recent break was no different. A significant number of our students represented Scone Grammar School at ANZAC Day marches and services across the Upper Hunter. This included marching, delivering prayers and readings, singing and laying wreaths. You all represented beautifully. We had 19 boys (plus three coaches and two managers), travel to Armidale to take part in the TAS Primary Rugby Carnival. Two comprehensive wins were followed by two close losses. The final game saw another strong performance with the boys claiming the win and coming away with 3 wins from 5 games. A wonderful effort. A big thank you to our coaches; Patto, Bobby and Ligges, who have invested significant amount of time into the development of this team. Two of our Primary girls represented in Vaulting at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. Charlotte Clark achieved 3'rd Pre-Novice Individual with a score of 6.175, 4'th PDD Walk (Partner Daytona Halloran) - Score 6.936, 1'st Squad Freestyle Prelim - Score 6.210. Ella Bennett: 3rd Prelim Individual scoring 6.397, 1'st Squad Freestyle Prelim - Score 6210. Another brilliant set of results for the girls. Well done. This Sunday sees the School community come together like never before with our annual Fete. I’m putting out a call to arms, to our Primary parents to put their hand up and assist where possible. If you know you can spare some time, please touch base with the Class Liaison Parent for your child’s year group.

“Only children believe they’re capable of everything.” – Paulo Coelho Word of the Week - Quixotic e.g. the children had quixotic ideas of riding unicorns through the parade Meaning: extremely idealistic, imaginative and romantic ideals Etymology: late 18th century English How we can use it this week: have a quixotic horse festival weekend! Congratulations to Luca Allan (2 Gold), Mackenzie Hails (3 Blue), Oliver Dart (6 Gold), Adelaide Fraser (2 Blue), Teagan Stewart (3 Blue), Oli Green (3 Gold), Hugo Fernandes (5 Blue), Makenna Caban (K Blue) and Bridie O’Neill (6 Gold) who are celebrating birthdays this week. I wish these students all the best as they enjoy their special day and share the time with family and friends.

KYCK19! During the Easter break, students from Scone Grammar School, along with Rev’d Nate, Mr Price and Mr Buckley, Mel and Jen, set off to Katoomba for the three day KYCK 2019 Christian Convention. This year’s group was again a good mix of older and younger Secondary students. We learnt more about how Jesus has won the victory for us, how God wants us to put Him first in life and how to demonstrate love to others. When we arrived at Katoomba, we visited the Three Sisters and the weekend that followed was very encouraging. We joined with over 2000 students learning about God’s word and engaging in lively worship and music! This year’s band made the words of the songs come alive for us. We enjoyed great food and met lots of great people. These 6 Bible talks and experiences were very challenging as well as encouraging and many of us learnt things which will help us to grow as young people following Jesus. (KYCK 18 attendees) In Prayer this week: Reflect on: Luke 18:18-23 Give thanks for: God’s goodness in sending us Jesus, the resurrection and the life, so we can have a way to be friends with God; Parents, teachers and supporters who truly care for us Pray for: For the school building project; For Fete preparations; For families and students who are ill or struggling at the moment; For your son or daughter’s teacher/s! Head of Secondary Welcome back. I hope you all had a great break and are refreshed for the start of term. Since my last Newsletter, we have had many students competing at the Sydney Royal Easter Show. The School Cattle Team won a bronze medal, and I am sure Mr Holland will supply a full report about the carcass competition at Assembly. I would like to congratulate all the students for their performance and also their excellent behaviour while away for the week. I was also privileged to walk into the Schmidt Arena as Sarah Clark was presented with a first place ribbon for vaulting and several other Scone children also received ribbons in this sport. I have also heard many other students performed well over the show with other cattle and horse events. Alyssa Mollema also competed in the National Youth Archery Championships over the holidays and won 4 gold medals and 1 silver medal and we are hopeful she will hear some more exciting news about future competitions soon. On ANZAC Day, I joined the Merriwa march with a large number of our students, and there were many equivalent turnouts in all of our regions. This local support for the communities we live in was absolutely delightful to see. Our students in their uniforms certainly make an impact and I would like to thank all of the students and their families for their attendance. This is a shorter term, but possibly a busier one. I look forward to seeing many of you at the Fete on Sunday. Quote of the week “Every successful individual knows that his or her achievement depends on a community of

persons working together.” - Paul Ryan Have a great week! Mrs Deanna Hollis [email protected]

Tales from The Yellow Cottage

At this time of the year I am always reminded of the fantastic community we live in. Horse Week is a very special community time for Scone and our preschool is lucky to be able to take part in so many aspects of the festival. This time of the year also generates community involvement with the preparation of our horse float. It is very much a team effort - the children, the families and the staff, and we are grateful for the opportunity to work together to create a spectacular ride for the children on parade day. No matter who you are, a connection to community involvement makes a difference to the development of children. Every dot that is connected leads us to a stronger, healthier, happier, and more well-rounded society as a whole. Every positive impact that is made on the playground, in the garden, at preschool, at community events, leads to a change and an influence over our entire society. If we put in work and the heart at the community level for our children, we’re working to give them the foundation for a better future. Children are gifted the opportunity to learn, grow, and achieve greatness and happiness through their community. Let’s work together to unify, engage, and build these connections around the entire world — one community, one child, at a time.

News from the School Counsellor Relationships The quality of relationships between students and teachers are the greatest predictors of student success and the delivery of high order teaching. It is crucial for parents and teachers to have a collective vision of what they want their students to act like, look like, sound like, know and can do because of their influence. And then have a shared road map to follow to achieve this student image. The old sayings, “we can’t teach them till we reach them” and “kids don’t care what we know till they know we care”, are pivotal beliefs to live and breathe loving being a parent and a teacher. One certain thing is parents and teachers can’t fake caring, students will pick up on this very quickly. Cultivating growth mindsets in students to believe their teachers are there for them and genuinely want them to become their best possible selves will build healthy relationships in classrooms. This includes accepting their teachers’ advice, as they do with their sports coaches and realising that teachers, like themselves, are also individuals, with their own ways of doing things. When students, parents and teachers combine their top strengths great learning, parenting and teaching occurs, enabling the whole school community to thrive and flourish.

Curriculum News HICES Debating Round 3 On Monday 8 April Round 3 of the HICES Debating Competition took place at Central Coast Grammar School. The Junior teams debated That the international symbol of disability should be changed. Our Junior Gold team was against Bishop Tyrell Anglican College (BTAC A), taking the affirmative argument for the topic. Campbell Smith, Hugo Shann, Charlotte Clark and Jason Lighezzolo won this debate and received excellent feedback from the adjudicator. Our Junior White team with Lilla Stanford, Tom Hill, Hunter Wild and Ollie Dart also took the negative argument against Newcastle Grammar School 6 and lost this time. Our Junior Blue team, consisting of Charlie Mitchell, Sophie Park, Gina Kimpton and Clare Wilkinson had a narrow loss against Newcastle Grammar School 5 taking the negative argument. SGS Middle Team argued the topic That it is of more value for Australian school students to do exchanges from city to country and vice versa than to travel overseas. They had the affirmative argument with Thomas Burnett, Lexi Walsh, Sofia Edlington and Lilly Malone winning against HVGS Red. Once again this team received positive feedback from the adjudicator, who was particularly impressed with their arguments. In the Senior Division, Max Seale, Bridget Burnett, Sam Barry and Harriet Firth lost against NGS taking the negative argument with the difficult topic, If we restrict ourselves to words in the dictionary, we are limiting our forms of expression. Thanks to Ms Louise Broomfield for preparing the Middle Team and Mr Paul Smart for driving one of the buses to Erina. This was a long day for our students and as usual they represented SGS extremely well. Round 4 will be held at Hunter Valley Grammar School on Wednesday May 8.

Loose Parts Play

Over the past year or so, we have had a few loose part materials in our school playground. These are highly valued by our students and have allowed the students to create some fascinating play scenarios. We are wanting to further introduce the use of ‘loose parts’ into our playground by providing more parts for them.

Loose parts are items and materials that children can use in their play. They provide a high level of creativity and choice and the possibilities are endless for how they can be used. Research shows that children like to play with loose parts because they can use their imagination and have greater control in their play. Children are incredibly creative and will be able to use the most ordinary of objects in ways adults would not think of.

We are looking for help to build up our collection of loose parts in our school. We are asking if you have any of the following things lying around at home if you would be willing to donate them to our children to allow their imaginations to develop further. These items could range from pots and pans to tyres, rope, tubs, tubes, old musical equipment, rugs, material, wood, logs, pipe, crates etc… Basically, anything that a child can play with.

It would be wonderful if you could work alongside your child to donate any unwanted items from the list. Any items brought into school can be placed at the back of the Year 4 classrooms in the designated area and must be safe for the children to handle. The children will be shown how to use the objects in a safe and enjoyable way.

If you have any large containers or weather proof boxes that we could use to store this equipment in it would also be helpful.

We look forward to setting up our loose parts play area and giving the children the endless opportunities to explore what they can do!

Thank you for your continued support. Please contact myself if you have any questions.

Primary Rugby Term 1 It was a hive of Rugby activity during Term 1, kicking off early with trials and weekly training to get the boys ready for Primary 7’s and the TAS Rugby Carnival. SGS is extremely lucky to have dedicated coaches. A huge thank you to the Under 10’s coach, Andrew Giblin and Under 12’s coaches, Angus Patterson, Bobby Davidson and Paul Lighezzolo. The time and effort they commit to the boys is invaluable, and a credit to the boys’ success and improvement.

Gunnedah Rugby 7’s Carnival SGS took one U10’s team and two U12’s team to this Carnival. All 3 teams played outstanding rugby and represented themselves well. The Under 10’s team displayed amazing improvement over the day and participated in both skills sessions and rugby 7 a side games. Both of our Under 12’s teams progressed through to the Regional finals. All teams playing some well-structured 7’s.

Regional Finals Under 12’s Tamworth Both teams had a fun day out on the paddock. SGS Blue showed lots of grit as they came up against some bigger lads from the region, with all boys improving over the day. SGS Gold went through the day undefeated. This win now sees SGS Gold progress to the State Finals, to be held in Sydney on 25th May.

Under 12’s TAS Rugby Carnival On April 12-14 Scone Grammar took a squad of 19 eager Primary rugby players on tour to The Armidale School Primary Rugby Carnival. It is a carnival that attracts 51 teams from all over NSW,QLD, and even a team from WA and the ACT. This year saw the boys play in a higher division. The boys were capably led by their captains Harry Warner and Charlie Mitchell. With 8 teams in our division, the boys played 4 pool games on the Saturday having 2 good wins against Toowoomba Anglican School and the Highfield Redbacks and a very close game against the The Gordon Tartans, who narrowly defeated us on the bell. This placed the boys third in the pool at the end of the day. The traditional ‘Spirit of Rugby Relay’ was held on Saturday afternoon, whereby each team nominates 4 players to compete in a length of the field race, passing a ball instead of a baton. Harry Warner, Lachlan Hails, Hugo Firth and Sean Ryan represented SGS. After winning their heat, they progressed to the final, coming 5th out of 51 teams – outstanding effort boys! Sunday morning saw SGS come up against Lismore Junior Rugby Club to play for 5th in the Division. The boys brought everything to the paddock and displayed both an excellent defensive and offensive game coming away with a 21 to 5 win in what was a very physical game. Harry Warner was awarded the ‘Players Players’ vote after show casing his outstanding skills over the weekend. He received a ‘Zoo’ training tee supplied by the Carnivals major sponsor. It was also very exciting to be able to cheer our very own Bridget Burnett who was awarded ‘Referee of the Carnival’. This is an outstanding effort and we were very proud to be there to see her receive this award. A big congratulations goes to all 19 players who each contributed to the team’s success; whether through a bursting run, an inspirational tackle, a great try or simply putting their body on the line for their teammates. It is also important to mention the wonderful way in which the team conducted themselves off the field. They were a great representative for our school. A special thank you also must go out to the parents who attended the Carnival and showed massive amounts of support and encouragement for the team. A huge thank you to Angus Patterson, Bobby Davidson and Paul Lighezzolo for accompanying and coaching the boys. Mrs Amy Patterson SGS Rugby Manager

Student Holiday Happenings Josh Crowther - Year 8 & Andrew Crowther - Year 5 – Musical/Acting

Josh and Andrew have spent most of these holidays in Newcastle rehearsing for and performing in the musical production Wizard of Oz Arena Spectacular at the Newcastle Entertainment Centre. Josh and Andrew were part of the Mass Ensemble which involved singing, dancing and acting. After successfully auditioning in the middle of 2018 (over 3,000 students auditioned, with 500 being selected), rehearsals commenced in 2019, initially with a Boot Camp so everyone could get to know each other and then consequently various weekends to learn the dances and songs. As the April school holidays drew closer rehearsals were a little more intense with somedays rehearsals going for 10 hours! Both boys said the experience was awesome and they would definitely do it again! Congratulations Josh and Andrew!
