    IEEE UET Student Branch December 2009 Newsletter

    (July 2009-Dec 2009) IEEE UET Student Branch has always been an active students organization of UET, Lahore since the inauguration of the branch in 1982 by Dr. R.E. Larson, the then President of IEEE. Though the branch has not been very active in the last couple of years but the current executives not only rejuvenated the rhymes of the branch but also set new traditions by taking several initiatives to enhance the technical competence of the students. Several interactive events and educative sessions have been organized. All of this was possible due to the effective leadership of executive committee, the strenuous efforts and active participation of the team members and of course the keen interest shown by the attendants.     Final Year Project Orientation An orientation seminar was organized on 20th Jun 2009 to help students get guideline about FYP. Guest Speaker, Rafaeel Akbar Chaudhary, Chair IEEE Gold Lahore gave a very motivating speech for students to pursue such projects which they can work on after graduation and develop such products which have market value focusing on the importance of entrepreneurship in the present financial crisis.

    IEEE Women in Engineering UET Affinity Group For the very first time in the history of UET, the IEEE Branch took a great initiative to establish a vibrant community for women engineers known as WIE UET opening new horizons to local women engineers where they can show their talent and serve technology. The official date of formation of the affinity group is 25 August 2009. The geo-

    code is SBA20631.The formation of the affinity group is a result of sincere efforts of Branch Chair, M Maroof Raza, Miss Amna Chaudhary and Miss. Jowaria Sohail.

    15th September 09

    Seminar on Voice over IP IEEE-UET organized an interactive seminar on VOIP on 15th December 2009. This event turned out to be a huge success where more than 80 people attended and gained the advantage of having a glimpse of internet telephony. The seminar was conducted by Mr. Adeel Rizvi (CCIE, Corvit Systems), who gave practical demonstration of VoIP on routers and that was the most enticing part for the attendants.

    15th September 09

    IEEE Women in Engineering - An Introduction An orientation seminar about IEEE WIE was conducted by Ms Jowaria Sohail and Ms. Seemin Hasan where they elaborated the vision and Mission of IEEE WIE to an audience of about sixty students from different sessions. They gave of a brief orientation about the concept of Women IN Engineering. A highly interactive presentation was delivered by Ms Jowaria Sohail (Chair UET WIE) which evidently inspired every soul sitting in the room.

    Tutorial on Optical Communication, SDH & DWDM

    Keeping in view the importance of optical communication in todays telecom and datacom networks, IEEE UET organized a tutorial on Optical Communication. The event took place on 30th September, 2009 and was conducted by the two most experienced professionals form the industry. Mr. Ijaz-ul-hasan (Warid telecom, Pak.) introduced the idea of fiber-optics and SDH. Mr. Meesam raza (Viatel, UK) delivered lecture on DWDM and future of optical communication. The event was aimed to assist final year students of telecom.

    Lecture on Broadband over Power Lines

    At IEEE-UET, we always try our level best to provide our fellow undergrads with insight on latest scientific breakthroughs and keep them updated about various technological advancements. So continuing the chain of dynamic events, IEEE took yet another concrete step in putting together a comprehensive tutorial on Broadband over Power Lines. The lecture was delivered by Mr. M. Amir Ali (MIEEE, MACM) on 3rd October, 2009. Almost 40 people attended it.

    16th October 2009

    IEEE Communication Society UET Chapter

    IEEE UET Student Branch took yet another imitative to establish branch chapter of IEEE Communication Society. Final year students showed a great interest in the society chapter and formation of the new chapter was only possible due to the keen interest of M Maroof Raza (Chair of

    the Branch) who really involved everybody for the purpose. He also served as an interim chair for the chapter. The petition to for the new chapter has been approved.

    The official formation date was 16 October 2009. The geo-code is SBC206311.

    10th -16th November 2009

    VOIP- 15 Hours Training Session

    Based upon the interest and positive reviews of the attendants regarding the seminar on the emerging VoIP technology, IEEE-UET arranged a training session on VoIP for the students of Electrical & Computer Science. The workshop was conducted from 10th to 16th November, in collaboration with CORVIT SYSTEMS; by Mr. Adeel Rizvi (CCIE).

    Workshop Documentation

    IEEE UET Scholastic committee prepared complete documentation of the workshop. The committee prepared lecture notes of all the course contents which were covered in the workshop. All the lectures are available in the digital library of the student branch.

    IEEE UET Digital Library

    IEEE UET Student Branch has built a digital library for its members where they can access the contents and lectures of all the previous workshops and seminars conducted by the branch. The digital library also contains video lectures, computer based trainings, softwares and student projects. The branch is still working on the digital library. So far only members can access the library.

    This is one of the recent projects initiated by the branch. The Student Branch is also working few other projects which would be published soon on the branch website.

    23rd -25th November 09

    MATLAB 7.9 Workshop UET WIE Group (The Most Successful Workshop at EE Dept.) Being a part of IEEE-UET requires a lot more professionalism than meets the eye. Here we are constantly working to bring interactive programs for the betterment of students. For the very purpose IEEE UET and WIE UET affinity group conducted a comprehensive workshop on MATLAB which turned out to be the most successful workshop of the year where approximately 140 students attended the workshop.

    The workshop was conducted by Mr. Adeem Aslam & Mr Waseem Arshad who really made a great effort for conducting this workshop. The student branch is very thankful to them for their time. Workshop Manual:- The organizing committee prepared a comprehensive manual of for the workshop which covered topics from basics like matrix manipulation to advanced like data import/export etc using MATLAB.     03rd December 2009 Lecture on Control System Toolbox Dr. K M Hasan, Counselor of IEEE UET Student Branch gave an introductory lecture about Control Systems to the student who attending the MATLAB Workshop and introduced the students about how to use Control System Toolbox. It was a great inspiring orientation lecture for the students

    Seminar on Satellite Communication An introductory seminar on Satellite Communication was conducted by the Student Branch in collaboration with SUPARCO on December 15th 2009. The professionals from SUPARCO gave a presentation about Satellites, GEO Satellites and LEO Satellites and their importance and usage in todays era of wireless communication. The seminar was conducted by Syed Wasif Mehdi and approximately 30 people joined us in the seminar.

    IEEE 125th Anniversary the Mega Event IEEE UET Student Branch was honored to host the 125th Anniversary Event by the Section in collaboration with other branches. All the branch members enthusiastically participated in the 125th Anniversary Celebration and turned the event into a huge success. The Event was held on 17th Dec 2009 where a variety of events were arranged ranging from competitions, industry liaison sessions, presentations about IEEE 125 years of Excellence and Innovation, Awards Distribution ceremony , 125th Anniversary Cake cutting ceremony and dinner of members. IEEE GCUL and IEEE UCET Student Branch joined us as co-organizers.

    125th Anniversary- Event Report This 2009 calendar year had been very busy for IEEE-UET student branch. The student branch launched several interactive programs, workshops and seminars and introduced several platforms to the fellow students so that they can not only enhance their technical competence but also improve and polish their professional skills

    All over the world, the year 2009 had been celebrated as the 125th anniversary of IEEE. And subsequently IEEE-UET, gained the privilege of hosting the IEEE 125th anniversary event in Lahore, Pakistan.

    17th Dec., 2009 was remarkable day for IEEE-UET. This was the very day when IEEE-UET unleashed its potential & coined history by achieving a major milestone in its brief history since its revival in UET. With this event, IEEE-UET definitely emerged as a strong platform and a torch bearing edifice for all the electrical engineers. The IEEE 125th anniversary celebration @ UET, hosted by IEEE-UET in alliance with IEEE-GCUL, was made even more cherish able due to the presence of IEEE-UCET and several titans form the industry. The event was generously sponsored by CORVIT SYSTEMS. We are very grateful to them for aiding us in this venture. No doubt, the event was a mega success!

    Starting Ceremony

    The event started with the recitation of verses from Holy Quran followed by a brief yet an extremely informative presentation by IEEE-GCUL regarding IEEE platform. The presentation was quite interesting and hence involved every soul sitting in the hall. Soon after the conclusion of the presentation, we formally started with our first unique event of the day, the Inter-University Networking Quiz Competition that was powered by CORVIT SYSTEMS.

    Networking Quiz

    The event, despite being the first one of its kind, received a very positive response. More than 80 students took the test. The test was designed so as to completely and thoroughly examine an intellectuals computer networking skills. The test carried 55 questions of worth 60 marks and duration of 45 minutes. The test started at 10am and ended at 11am and thus we proceeded to the next event.

    Industry Liaise

    The next event was even more unique and the most interactive and beneficial to students. The Industry Liaise is one of the rare events to have gained so much applause ever in the history of UET. Senior professionals form reputed organizations such as UFONE, WARID, CORVIT Networks, Global Engg. Systems, PTCL, Motorolla, Huawei, Powersoft19, Telenor, Cybernet, Supcon, Soneri Bank and many others made sure of their presence to be a part of IEEE-UETs event and also to help the final year students in their professional and career pursuits. This particular event had full media coverage by the channel DUNYA.

    Senior Professionals from different industry joined us on 125th Anniversary Event and made it a great day for us. It was a great event where students gained an opportunity to personally interact with these professionals and learn from their experiences and seek career counseling or any queries regarding their profession.     Billboard Contest

    The next event on our time table was the billboard competition, which was managed by IEEE-GCUL and it was huge success due to its unique nature. People submitted their interactive designs aimed to increase the publicity of iEEE and thus the best template won the first prize.

    Programming Contest

    Programming contest was the next event where student showed a great interest. The event was held at SUPCON lab and CC-1 lab @ our dept.; students from other universities participated in this completion as well. The test was set Mr. Awais Bin Altaf, lecturer @ Dept. of Elec. Engg., UET. The test consisted of 2 problems carrying equal marks and the duration was 1 hour. The participants were required to code the program in C language. No doubt, this contest introduced a very challenging atmosphere to the students and only the groups with razor-sharp skills could stand the atrocity of the test. The test was judged by Mr. Kashif Naveed, team-Lead Embedded Group, Powersoft19 and his associate.

    Cake Ceremoney

    With the termination of the test, we finally started with the prize distribution ceremony at the Chemical Seminar Hall. Dr. Zubair A. Khan, Dean to the dept of elec. Engg. Was invited as the chief guets. He did not only preside the event but also did the honor s of presenting the winners o f the above-mentioned contests with their certificates and prizes. The students who successfully completed the MATLAB and VoIP workshops were also given provided with their certificates. This event concluded with the Cake cutting ceremony, in order to commemorate 125 years of excellence of IEEEs excellence. Afterwards, refreshments were served to the guests and participants.

    Leadership Workshop

    Mr. amir zahoor, SSR to IEEE Lahore section, also joined us at the occasion fortunately and after the refreshments he delivered a brief lecture in which he shared his ideas regarding the professional awareness and development of local student branches. We are very thankful to him for haring those memorable moments with us.

    Members Dinner

    At IEEE-UET, we always commend the valuable services rendered by its members for the welfare of the branch. The strenuous of all he executives and the event mangers who made strenuous efforts and dealt with all the issues with conviction and devotion are extremely appreciated. Thus to make those moments even more enjoyable, all the organizers were taken to KFC for the dinner. The meal was very delicious and I am pretty sure that everybody ate upto their fill. With the end of that dinner, that extra-ordinary day came to a haling end. But it was the first mega events of its kind and a preamble to many events yet to come in future.

    21st -22nd December 09

    Web & Graphic Designing Workshop

    A Web Designing workshop was conducted by IEEE UET Web Designing Committee in collaboration with BUG-X society. The committee members made a great effort for the students and their efforts were well applauded by the participants. The purpose of the workshop was to train volunteers for the preparing websites for new affinity group and society chapters. The student Branch also plans to participate in the web designing contest of IEEE.
