Dear Friends,

Rejoice in the Lord always. I shall say it again: rejoice! Your kindness should be known to all. The Lord is near. Have no anxiety at all, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, make your requests known to God. Then the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will

guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus

Today’s second reading, used often in wedding and funeral liturgies, urges the listener to get rid of bitterness, anxiety and uncertainty, and to allow God’s love to fill our hearts with joy. Last week, as we collected hundreds, and I mean hundreds, of gifts for needy families in our community and those who are served by Catholic Charities, my heart overflowed with joy. Your kindness and generosity amazed me. I am proud and grateful. This weekend, volunteers are delivering those gifts to the families. Amazing!

When we choose what pleases God most, and when we recognize that we are imperfect, and that God brings perfection to our imperfection, true joy can be found. And in his wonderful letter to the Philippians, Saint Paul gives great admonition for them and for us, whether we are at weddings or funerals or just going about our daily lives.

When you read this, we will have nine or ten days until we celebrate the coming of Christ into our lives. As Paul tells us to rejoice, John the Baptist gives great advice to his listeners as he exhorts them to get ready. He invites them and us to turn from evil ways and to do good and live generously. He encourages them and us to be attentive to the call of the Lord in our hearts as we go about our daily lives. The people ask him, “What should we do?” He tells them to share what they have, to live honestly and justly, to be fair and kind. It sounds so simple. But so often we don’t do those things. Now, in this final stage of preparing for Christ we can acknowledge our wrongdoing and commit to doing those things that John prescribes. As a people of faith,

we can commit to doing that together.

On Tuesday at 7pm, we will gather as a parish community to further prepare for the coming of Christ. In an atmosphere of reflective Taize prayer and song, we will have a communal service of reconciliation, with an opportunity for individual Sacramental Reconciliation. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is a great way to prepare our spiritual homes to allow Christ to enter them. Come. Escape the busyness of the season for a time of prayer, reflection, peace and forgiveness.

When we experience the mercy of God in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, we have just one more reason to be joyful, and our joy can bring light to a darkened world. Perhaps you can think of where in your world you can bring God’s light, mercy and love. I suggest starting in your home. Too often when we think about bringing light and love we look beyond our own doorstep. Stop for a moment and ask yourself, “Who needs my love today? Who needs to know my kindness? Do my children need it, my parents, my spouse, my siblings...?”

In the midst of the darkness that exists on our world, we who experience the joy that God’s mercy brings to us must follow the call and the example of the Baptist and prepare the way of the Lord, with kindness and good deeds. I have no doubt that we can.

The Black Christ of Esquipulas is an image of Jesus Crucified revered by millions of faithful in Central America that is in the Basilica of Esquipulas in the city of the same name in Guatemala.

Queridos Amigos,

Alégrense siempre en el Señor. Lo repito: ¡Alégrense! Que su benevolencia sea conocida por todos. El Señor está cerca. No se inquieten por nada; más bien presenten en toda ocasión sus peticiones a Dios en la oración y la súplica llenos de gratitud. Y que la paz de Dios, que sobrepasa toda inteligencia, custodie sus

corazones y sus pensamientos en Cristo Jesús.

La segunda lectura de hoy, a menudo utilizada en liturgias de bodas y funerales, exhorta al oyente a deshacerse de la amargura, ansiedad, e incertidumbre, y a permitir que el amor de Dios llene nuestros corazones de alegría. La semana pasada, cuando colectamos cientos, si, cientos de regalos para familias necesitadas en nuestra comunidad y para las familias que Caridades Católicas ayuda, mi corazón se desbordó de alegría. Su amabilidad y generosidad me asombraron. Estoy orgulloso y agradecido. Este fin de semana, los voluntarios están entregando esos regalos a las familias. ¡Increíble!

Cuando elegimos lo que más le agrada a Dios, y cuando reconocemos que somos imperfectos, y que Dios brinda la perfección a nuestra imperfección, podemos encontrar el verdadero gozo. Y en su maravillosa carta a los filipenses, San Pablo les da una gran advertencia a ellos y a nosotros, ya sea que estemos asistiendo a bodas, funerales o que simplemente nos ocupemos de nuestras vidas diarias.

Cuando lean esto, tendremos nueve o diez días hasta que celebremos la venida de Cristo en nuestras vidas. Cuando Pablo nos dice que nos regocijemos, Juan el Bautista da un gran consejo a sus oyentes mientras los exhorta a que se preparen. Él los invita y a nosotros a desviarnos de los malos caminos y hacer el bien y vivir generosamente. Él los anima y a nosotros a estar atentos al llamado del Señor en nuestros corazones a medida que avanzamos en nuestra vida diaria. La gente le pregunta: “¿Qué debemos hacer?” Él les dice que compartan lo que tienen, que vivan de manera honesta y justa, que sean imparciales y bondadosos. Suena tan simple. Pero a menudo no hacemos esas cosas. Ahora, en esta etapa final de preparación para Cristo, podemos reconocer nuestras malas acciones y comprometernos a hacer las cosas que

Juan señala. Como pueblo de fe, podemos comprometernos a hacerlo juntos.

El martes a las 7 pm nos reuniremos como una comunidad parroquial para prepararnos aún más para la venida de Cristo. Tendremos un servicio comunitario de reconciliación en un ambiente de oración y canción reflexiva de Taize, con una oportunidad para la reconciliación sacramental individual. El Sacramento de la Reconciliación es una excelente manera de preparar nuestros hogares espirituales para permitir que Cristo entre en ellos. Vengan. Escapen del ajetreo de la temporada para un tiempo de oración, reflexión, paz y perdón.

Cuando experimentamos la misericordia de Dios en el Sacramento de la Reconciliación, tenemos solo una razón más para estar felices, y nuestra alegría puede brindar luz a un mundo oscuro. Quizás puedan pensar en qué lugar de su mundo pueden brindar la luz, la misericordia y el amor de Dios. Les sugiero empezar en sus casas. Muy a menudo, cuando pensamos en traer luz y amor, miramos más allá de nuestra propia puerta. Deténganse un momento y pregúntense: “¿Quién necesita mi amor hoy? ¿Quién necesita conocer mi bondad? ¿Lo necesitan mis hijos, mis padres, mi esposa, mis hermanos ...?”

En medio de la oscuridad que existe en nuestro mundo, los que experimentamos el gozo que la misericordia de Dios nos brinda, debemos seguir el llamado y el ejemplo del Bautista y preparar el camino del Señor, con bondad y buenas obras. No tengo ninguna duda de que podemos hacerlo.

El Cristo Negro de Esquipulas es una imagen de Jesús Crucificado venerado por millones de fieles en Centroamérica, el cual se encuentra en la Basílica de Esquipulas en la ciudad del mismo nombre en Guatemala. Una simple recepción seguirá en el salón parroquial con tamales guatemaltecos.

DECEMBER 15-16: Cookies and Cocoa With Santa was a HUGE success! Thank you to SJB’s Director of Events, Gabriela Herr, and her team of volunteers & donors for creating a memorable morning full of holiday cheer. Also, a big thank you to Santa for making the trip to Chicago!!

St. John Berchmans’ Youth Choir sang Christmas carols at Cookies and Cocoa with Santa and at Liberty Bank last weekend. Their singing was angelic and brought seasonal joy to all who heard them. Thank you to Mr. Arkenberg and the youth choir for their amazing performances!
