DE LA OFICINA DEL PASTOR FROM THE OGLE OFFICE Dear Friends, Last weekend we shared with you the annual financial and pastoral reports for our parish. The financial report is a requirement that we submit to our diocese every year after reviewing it with our parish trustees and Parish Finance Committee, with whom I meet regularly throughout the year. The pastoral report summarizes the numbers of sacramental and pastoral events that take place here during the calendar year periods, as well as the Mass attendance numbers reported to the diocese each year. Our professional accounting firm, Baglivi and Cook, assure us that our parish finances are in good shape. The weekly collections are slightly down this year. The reason for this is hard to assess. Could it be a decline in attendance? Actually, Mass attendance is slightly higher for the selected Sundays we report to the diocese, as you can see, so it seems that slightly more people are contrib-uting slightly less. This may be due to the shift in our parish base from long-time residents leaving Astoria and the arrival of many newcomers to our vibrant neighborhood. Are there other reasons? I’ll continue to discuss it with my committee and I welcome any parishioners’ input on the matter. We’re fortunate that the Capital Campaign “Generations of Faith” and the school rental supplement our collection income as they do. Certainly our expenses are high. The cost of salaries and benefits of employees accounts for a small increase, as does the increased cost of office, church and rectory supplies and maintenance. Staffing here is kept to a minimum with the assistance of many volunteers in various jobs. By far the largest expense here is the cost of repairing and maintaining our buildings. We have a total of seven buildings, including one at St Margaret Mary, whose aggregate age is 670 years. As you know my predecessor, now Bishop Sanchez, when he was pastor here, and I have engaged in a systematic program or rehabbing and upgrading our buildings to secure them for future pastoral use, with the re-sult that over the last twelve years we have addressed in a cost-effective manner many infrastructure issues afflicting our aged buildings. We always seek the assistance and input of both parish committees and professional engineers and contractors in doing so. This year we worked on two long-planned matters: the rectory roof and the church ramp with its attendant infrastructure. However, no matter how much one may anticipate, every year there emerge more surprises hidden in our walls, floors and roofs. Most Astorians know this reality from their own homes and buildings. Likewise, this year has surprised us with several unexpected and costly repairs: the gym stage roof, and both the rectory and church plumbing. This has caused us to postpone other needed upgrades: the church sacristies, the gym lighting, and at some point, the upper and lower church air conditioning systems, which are over 30 years old. They will be addressed, God willing, in years to come. I prefer to write in these bulletin letters about more directly pastoral matters such as scripture, liturgy and parish life. However, good stewardship requires us all to be informed about the practical aspects that make all our great parish activities possible. So please give your serious consideration to both the needs and opportunities that together we pursue in our vocations as missionary disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ.

God Love you, Msgr. Ogle

Sean G. Ogle

Annual Catholic Appeal Thank you to all the generous individuals who have made a pledge to the 2018 Annual Catholic Appeal at Our Lady of Mount Carmel. As of November 26, 2018, we have 251 donors who have pledged $66,113 towards our parish goal of $59,118. Over $54,000 have been collected thus far. Pledge envelopes are still available at the church doors and in the rectory. No pledge is too small and everyone can help our campaign succeed.

2018 GIVING TREE It is time for our 11th annual Giving Tree to help those less fortunate than us. Through the weekend of January 6, there will be 3 trees decorated with tags that will benefit BRIDGE TO LIFE and some parish members from St. Margaret Mary who need our assistance. These trees will be located in the following areas: 1) in the narthex of the upper church, 2) in the West Vestibule near the elevator and 3) in the lower church. We hope you are able to take a tag or more if possible and buy the items listed. Please do not wrap the gift. Just tape the tag to the bag or box so we can identify the item and where it is to go. Please bring the gift by the weekend of January 6 and give to an usher during Masses or bring to the Rectory for safe keeping. We all know times are tough but for those of us lucky enough, a donation will aid someone during this time of year where it is better to give than to receive. God bless you and your families for your generosity.
