BCA Staff Looks Forward to Another Successful Year in 2013

A MESSAGE FROM THE GENERAL MANAGER

I can’t believe how fast this year has passed and all that was accomplished in 2012. Brambleton had another re-cord year for new home sales with more than 450 home closings in 2012. In addition to keeping up with the record sales, BCA staff has been busy much of the year developing a strategic plan for the Association, designing a new website, enhancing community lifestyles and improving overall operation and administrative procedures and effi ciencies. In all, I see that 2012 has been a year of suc-cessful growth for the Association and community.

I would like to thank and recognize Director and Vice President Steve Wright for his eff orts and dedication to the community over the past three years during his term on the BCA Board. Steve has worked hard while on the Board to successfully man-age the Association’s growth as the

community has grown over the past three years. Steve continually recog-nized and balanced residents’ desires and needs with the overall mission of the Association. He has also been very supportive of staff , for which I am very appreciative and thankful. It has been a true pleasure to work with Steve over the past several years.

I would like to congratulate and wel-come Directors Brian Viola and Tony Buffi ngton to the BCA Board. Brian and Tony were elected to the Board at this past November’s Annual Meet-ing. They will both serve a three year term. I look forward to working with them on the continued success and management of the Association. The addition of Brian and Tony to the Board along with Director Tom Gur-ganous, completes the makeup of the Board with a total of seven directors, three of which are resident elected.

Brambleton Community Associa-

tion: The Brambleton Community Association (BCA) is committed to prompt snow and ice management on the common areas and common drives in sections of the community that have been fi nal paved and are no longer under construction. Please report all common area and common drive relat-ed concerns to [email protected].

Developer: The Brambleton Group or Developer will perform snow and ice management on all future VDOT streets that have been constructed but not yet accepted by the state, and on all common drives that have not been fi nal paved and accepted by BCA. Please report these concerns to [email protected] so they can be assessed and reported to the develop-er accordingly.

VDOT: Virginia Department of Trans-portation (VDOT) will perform snow and ice management on public streets (those that have been topped with the fi nal coat of asphalt and released from bond). These streets typically have

Are you ready for winter? Do you know who will be plowing your street this year? Do you know who is respon-sible for shoveling the sidewalks? The responsibility for snow and ice man-agement falls on several diff erent par-ties, depending upon the location and ownership of the property, stage of construction and other determining factors.

Homeowners: Townhome and Single-Family homeowners are responsible for shoveling snow on their driveway and the sidewalks on and adjacent to their property. This includes the VDOT sidewalk or common area sidewalk in front of your property. Once the side-walk has been cleared of snow, the use of non-corrosive, environmental-friendly material, such as sand, should be applied for traction purposes. Do not apply salt to concrete sidewalks and driveways aprons. The salt can damage the concrete or shorten the useful life of the concrete. Residents are responsible for damage to side-walks as a result of salt applications.

*Please Note: Brambleton residents can assist the snowplow operators by park-ing in driveways or designated parking spaces during snowstorms. This prac-

Residences and Residences II Condo-

miniums: There are several organiza-tions responsible for the snow removal throughout the Residences. Unit own-ers are responsible for clearing the driveways that serve their unit. The condominium associations are respon-sible for clearing all sidewalks serving each building (Concerns to: [email protected]). The Developer is re-sponsible for clearing and treating the common streets throughout the Resi-dences. BCA is responsible for clearing hard surfaces around the Beacon Crest Pool and the trails and sidewalks along Ryan Road and Belmont Ridge Road. To simplify this, all concerns should be sent to [email protected] and will be addressed accordingly.

Summerfi eld Condominiums: The Summerfi eld Condominium Asso-ciation is responsible for clearing and treating all common hard surfaces on the property. Please forward all ques-tions and related concerns to Joanne Mazzarella at 703-327-4818 or [email protected].

To reduce the problem of snow be-ing plowed back into driveways, snow should be shoveled to the right of driveways or into yards rather than into the street.

Ice can make for extremely dangerous conditions for pedestrians and driv-ers. Please treat icy areas on sidewalks and walkways with ice melting treat-ment to prevent falls. Remember that bridges freeze before roads so pay extra attention when approaching a bridge. Drive slow and in low gear if necessary. Watch for children playing or walking in streets.

‘Tis the Season: Reasons to CelebrateEVENTS AND PROGRAMMING

ence from her time working with the Events team at the Loudoun Cham-ber of Commerce, as well as, various volunteer jobs she has held over the years. We are excited to add her to our already awesome staff !

#2 – I’m celebrating growing in my role here at BCA. If you didn’t notice, my title has changed, from Events and Programming Coordinator, to Com-munity Lifestyles Manager. I argued for my title to be Director of Fun, but didn’t think the Board would buy into that one, so Community Lifestyles Manager will do just fi ne. My new ex-panded role will include taking on a more active role in the management of the all things parks and recreation, and management of our community facilities. I will still be as involved as ever in the planning and execution of our many community events and programs.

I love this time of year! So much to be thankful for, and so much to cel-ebrate! It’s a time to come together with friends, families, and coworkers to eat, drink, and be merry…. regard-less of what you are celebrating! We are ending a year that for all intents and purposes was a success and per-haps for no other reason than we sim-ply survived! Let’s celebrate! Here are a few reasons I am celebrating this year!

#1 – I’m celebrating the addition of a new staff member to the Lifestyles Department. Help me in welcoming Kelley Brown, our new Events and Programming Administrator. She will be assisting in the day to day details of our events and programs, as well as providing some additional back up to the front desk area on occasion. She will be starting on December 3rd, and comes to us with great experi-

#3 – I’m celebrating the comple-tion of a great year that unfortunately started out pretty rough, because of some health issues, that I will spare you the lengthy details. Our events have continued to grow, and for the most part, the weather was great so we only had to reschedule a few things. The Activities Committee and I continue to come up with new ideas on how to make our current schedule of events even better! I am so thank-ful for this committee of dedicated and hardworking ladies (we welcome men to join us anytime!) as well as the many hardworking volunteers!

So whatever your reason for cele-brating this year, I hope this holiday season brings many wonderful new memories and a blessed time with your family and friends! Celebrate re-sponsibly and stay safe.

Brambleton has numerous ponds and water features throughout the community. While they bring a cer-tain charm and beauty to the com-munity, they come with safety risks. As temperatures start to drop, the Association asks all parents to re-view these safety concerns that are related to open water features with their children. Neighborhood ponds are aesthetically pleasing but contain hazardous conditions if basic safety practices are not followed. Please educate your children on these haz-ards and observe the following safety practices when near a neighborhood pond or other body of water during the winter:

• Frozen ponds should never be used for recreational purposes. Do not skate, play, ride, or step foot on a frozen pond.

• If you observe someone on one of

Brambleton’s frozen ponds, please take the initiative and remind them of the hazards and prohibited use of the pond. Immediate action is necessary to prevent a hazard from becoming a tragedy.

• If the individual(s) remain on the frozen pond, please report the in-cident to the proper authorities depending upon the day and time. Brambleton Management Offi ce during business hours (M-F, 9am-5pm) or Loudoun County Sheriff ’s Offi ce after business hours, on weekends and on holidays (703-777-1021).

• If a person, a pet, or personal item accidentally falls through the ice DO NOT FOLLOW!! You could be-come a victim too.

• If someone does fall through and you are alone, instruct the victim to

KEEP CALM while you CALL 9-1-1 immediately. Hypothermia can start immediately and can cause exhaustion or unconsciousness in only a few minutes.

• It is important to let the rescue crew know the victim's age, cir-cumstances of the incident, time it occurred, and where the victim was last seen. This information will help the rescuers assess the type of rescue needed.

• If you are with other people make sure that someone stays on the shore next to the victim while an-other CALLS 9-1-1. Try to keep an ongoing conversation with the victim in order to keep them calm and to aid in the rescue.

• Of course the best safety mes-sage is to STAY AWAY FROM FRO-ZEN PONDS.

Thank You for Making Small Busi-

ness Saturday a Huge Success!

The Brambleton Town Center Associ-ates would like to thank everyone who supported the local Brambleton businesses on Small Business Satur-day on November 24th. “Once again Small Business Saturday exceeded all of our expectations for the second year in a row. Last year, we had a tremendous rally of support, but this year our business increased by 20% on this one symbolic day. We saw lots of familiar faces, loyal custom-ers, friends, neighbors, fellow small business owners, as well as dozens of shoppers who were just discovering us for the fi rst time. As the creator of Go Bananas, I am overwhelmed with the kind words people had to

say about our store, our products, our staff and our services. I want to be sure our community knows how appreciative my family and I are for their support, not only on Small Busi-ness Saturday, but throughout the year. It is because of their year long support that we are able to turn our open sign every morning.” says Mary, Owner at Go Bananas Toy Store. “Saturday was great, we had about a 20% increase over the previous year!” commented Kim, Owner at Misguided Angels. 'Tis the season for giving and there is no better gift to give than a healthy smile. Unfortunately, the holidays tend to be a time when people consume greater amounts of sugary treats and drinks as well as become distracted from their dental care.

Dr. Haress Rahim, director of Bram-bleton's Bloo Dental, off ers the following tips to help ensure that your teeth will be with you for those future holidays.

1. When traveling to a friend or family member's home for a holiday meal, party or overnight visit, don't forget to pack a spare toothbrush, toothpaste and fl oss.

2. Keep the sweet cocktails and

non-alcohol drinks to a mini-mum. Not only can excessive sweet drinks cause weight gain but they can also result in tooth decay. Having a glass of water between sweet drinks is a simple way to control your intake.

3. Candy canes and other hard candies are in abundance during the holiday season; unfortunate-ly, hard candy (and your great aunt's fruit cake) can damage teeth when chewed and has a tendency to get stuck between your teeth where it can feed on bacteria. Be extra careful when eating hard candy and remem-ber to brush and fl oss afterwards.

4. Make dental care part of your holiday gift giving. Festive toothbrushes make great stock-ing stuff ers for the kids and help encourage good dental hygiene.

Dr. Rahim also suggests jump-start-ing the new year by getting your annual exam and cleaning on the calendar now.

What is this all about? You have probably heard of a traditional progressive or roving dinner where a different course is served in each home and the guests move together from one house to another. We are going to mix it up a bit... This year, we will do 3 rounds of hors d'oeuvres (tapas) with the menu & theme to be determined by each host and co-host. Each course is meant to be simple and will have between six and eight couples per home. You will not be with the same couples all evening so it is a great way to meet other people in Brambleton. Everyone will come together in the

Community Center (on Regal Wood Drive) for the final dessert course.

The tentative schedule for the evening is as follows:

6:00 p.m. to 6:50 p.m. ~ Course #1 ~ Tapas, round 1

7:00 p.m. to 7:50 p.m. ~ Course #2 ~ Tapas, round 2

8:00 p.m. to 8:50 p.m. ~ Course #3 ~ Tapas, round 3

9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. ~ Course #4 ~ Dessert

We need a firm commitment from all couples who wish to attend before beginning assignments, so line up your babysitters now! Sign up at: http://tinyurl.com/ctjpyfo or email [email protected] with any questions.
