Hello, associates! As we head into the final weeks of 2016, I want to share how proud I am of the work you’re doing. We have strong results this year—sales are up and so are our Clean, Fast, and Friendly scores—and it’s all thanks to you. I’m so impressed with how you’re taking care of our customersand communities.
Whenever I travel to stores and facilities, my favorite part of each visit is talking with you—our
associates. I love seeing how we are all working together and supporting each other so we can take care of our customers on the front lines.
These days, here’s what I see: You’re taking ownership of the business. Customers are happier. You’re helping to make their lives better. That’s what makes the difference.
This holiday season, please take a moment to think of how the work you do every day matters. You have my thanks and my gratitude. We wouldn’t be Walmart without you.
Merry Christmas and happy holidays to you and your families. I look forward to seeing you in your store soon!

What do you like most about your job?I love being able to move around. At self-checkout, you have many registers and many customers at once. I’m pleased to help customers check out quickly.
How do you help customers enjoy a speedy checkout?I make sure the registers are always clean and ready to go and that everything is working. I fill up the bags and register tape, and I make sure they have cash and are running right.
What do you do to connect with customers?I always greet them with a smile and tell them to have a good day before they leave. In between, I let them know I’m right there to help. Some know me by name and come here just to see me. I love that.

Outstanding Service
A great customer experience starts
with friendly, helpful associates—an area
where this store went the extra mile.
Pickup ProsGive this Pickup team five minutes—you’ll get your order and leave with a smile.
“Good customer service is the key to Pickup,” says Janel Accoo, co-manager of Store 3520 in Secaucus, N.J. “A lot of customers think they’ll have to wait when they use Pickup, so you need a team that gets customers served fast.” Fortunately, this Pickup team, led by Department Manager Setal Gandhi, is up to the task.
Here’s how they do it.
• Always available. The team is scheduled so that a Pickup associate is always at the desk while other associates pull and prepare orders.
• Stay on top of orders. Setal processes orders as they come in so they’re ready when customers arrive.
• Use new tools. The new WISMO (Where Is My Order?) lookup tool allows the Pickup team to keep track of customer orders and information.
• Communicate with customers. If there are any potential issues with an order, Setal lets the customer know.
Through it all, the team works to keep wait times short—ideally less than 5 minutes. As a result, customers know they can rely on Pickup for their shopping needs. “It really relieves stress for customers,” Janel says.

4TIPS FOR TAX TIMEJackson Hewitt® tax preparation services are available in more than 3,000 Walmart stores.
These four tax tips show why it pays to get started early.
* Offer valid on tax preparation fees only. May not be combined with any other offer, discount, or promotional price. Offer valid 12/27/16–4/18/17.
You may get an earlier refund.Because of new tax laws, refunds may be delayed this tax season. It’s to your benefit to be in the first round of returns processed by the IRS.
You’ll protect your data.Filing early is one of the best ways to avoid stolen identity refund fraud—a growing problem. If you’ve already filed, no one else can file in your name.
You’ll have time to check your tax credits.Did you move for a job, get married, have a baby, or retire? Research new credits; they could have a positive impact on your taxes.
You’ll avoid common mistakes.Depending on income and other factors, the Earned Income Tax Credit may be available to people earning $53,505 or less, but nearly 20 percent of eligible taxpayers didn’t claim it last year.

My Festive Trees
TRY IT MY WAY
Carolyn shares how she spreads Christmas joy around her home.
When I was growing up, my grandma and I didn’t put up our own Christmas tree because we always celebrated at the houses of my aunts and uncles. When I had my own kids, I wanted trees in every room! My kids are grown now, but I still love the tradition we created.
I start decorating the week before Thanksgiving so I have time to get each tree just right. The highlight is the 7½-foot-tall tree that sits on a rotating stand in my living room. I keep it simple and classic in silver and gold.
In the kitchen and dining room area, I decorate another 7½-foot-tall tree with a changing theme. Last year, I trimmed it in shades of blue. I even put a 2-foot-tall tree in my bathroom.
Then, of course, I finish by hanging the stockings!

When communities need help, associates are often among the first to lend a hand. One recent example: After the Clayton Fire blazed through northern California earlier this year, dozens of people—including nine associates at Store 1979 in Clearlake—lost everything.
In the midst of tragedy, however, Store 1979 was a refuge for the community. Associates passed out supplies to the fire department and helped serve meals to evacuees. The store donated hundreds of dollars to relief efforts, as well as pallets of water and other essentials.
“They are the unsung heroes,” says Willie Sapeta, fire chief of the Lake County Fire Protection District. “We couldn’t have done it without them.”

Associates frequently serve as mentors. Often, as shown by the story of Antwain Donté Hill, who was recently promoted to assistant manager at Store 5753 in Alexandria, Va., that role grows to impact life outside the store.
Antwain Donté usually kicks off the day with high fives for his associates. “There isn’t a person here I don’t speak to.” At his previous store, Antwain Donté joined the deli team and inspired them to increase sales about 20 percent month over month. He also helped 16 associates get their driver’s licenses for the first time and helped seven of them buy their first cars.
You inspire greatness.

The services associates offer at Walmart fit into customers’ lives in unexpected ways. Cake decorator Jersey Stockmaster of Store 641 in Greenville, S.C., says the cakes she makes for customers aren’t just cakes. She creates memories.
“By the end of the day, my hands, stained with different colors, can tell you everything about life,” she says. Her creations bring happiness, even at the most difficult times.
“We make someone’s day with every drop of icing,” she adds.
You love your craft.

If a customer has a concern, associates are always willing to act. That’s the example set by Patrick Stockwell, department manager, produce, at Store 885 in Seward, Neb., when families started asking about a Caroline’s Cart, a shopping cart with a larger seat for older children with special needs.
“If they had a child with special needs, it was impossible to have a regular shopping experience,” explains Patrick. “That really touched me.”
Patrick worked with the Home Office shopping cart team to get a Caroline’s Cart for his store.
One customer almost cried when she heard shopping with her son would be easier. “The Caroline’s Cart changes their entire shopping experience,” says Patrick.
You act with compassion.

Small acts of kindness have a lasting impact. Alphonso Beatty, a truck driver at Transportation Office 6873 in Pageland, S.C., has a letter to prove it.
Alphonso wasn’t expecting recognition when he helped a mother and son who were a few dollars short at the register. He covered the difference and helped them load their groceries. Alphonso even gave the boy a toy truck and some extra money so the boy could surprise his mom with lunch.
The customer wrote a thank you letter (with a drawing of a truck by the boy). Of Alphonso, she writes: “I asked him why. He smiled and said, ‘Our company believes in helping others and giving others a chance.’ ”
You pay it forward.

“Whenever the store needs something, Roy can pull it together,” says Co-manager Colette Johnson. “He’s very crafty.” One time, during a remodel, he made a temporary ball rack out of PVC pipes for the toy department. In his spare time, he puts that craftiness to work in a special way.
At home, Roy has a workshop where he makes toy cars and planes out of donated wood or old pallets and then paints them by hand. When they’re finished, he donates them all to Toys for Tots to help area kids have something special for Christmas.
“Toys for Tots helped me years ago when I didn’t have anything to give my kids for Christmas,” Roy says. Grateful for how the organization helped in his time of need, Roy promised himself he would give back once he got back on his feet. “I’m in a position now where I can give back,” he says. “For the past four years, I’ve done just that.”
THANK YOU, ROY: “I want to thank Roy for his dedication to helping his customers and fellow associates,” says Colette Johnson, co-manager, “and for how he uses his talents to benefit merchandising in the store.”

Heather Frey, assistant manager, Fresh, at Store 86 in Springfield, Mo., was driving home from work when she came across a car accident. She turned around to check on the passengers, but then her own car slid into a ditch.
That’s when she met Cody Collins, who had just finished grocery shopping after his shift at Store 88. He stopped to make sure everyone was OK.
After seeing that the passengers from the other accident were cared for, Cody checked on Heather. He offered her food from his grocery supply and waited with her until her husband arrived.
After Heather’s husband arrived, they managed to get her car back onto the road. Heather thanked Cody for his help, but to him, it was all in a day’s work.
“From my job, I’ve learned it’s easy to help people almost every day,” he says. “Whether it’s something major like a car accident or just saying ‘hi’ and smiling, it’s surprising how much you can boost someone’s day by just being nice.”
THANK YOU, CODY: “I want to thank Cody for bringing good to light and for making us think about how we should represent our company and ourselves,” says Kyle Rice, store manager, Store 88.

“Walmart is considered the top shopping option in Mexico. I’m proud to belong to this company for all it’s done for me,” says José, who frequently visits stores throughout Mexico City and other parts of the country in his role as produce supervisor. As Walmart celebrates its 25th year in Mexico this year, José has a special anniversary of his own: This month marks his 49th year in a grocery career that began at Grupo Cifra, the supermarket chain that later became Walmart Mexico.
José’s many years of experience have made him a valued mentor for newer associates, who look to him for advice in both their professional and personal lives.
“When I started with Walmart, José showed me how the work was done,” says Justino Gómez Miranda, produce chief, Store 1770, Mexico City. “More than a supervisor, he is my teacher and dear friend.”
GRACIAS, JOSÉ: “José is a role model for all associates,” says Jose Angel Sanchez Salas, subdirector, Commercial Produce.

Last year, Store 5497’s partnership with Operation Homefront provided more than 300 care packages for local military families during the holiday season. This year, the associates hope to take that number to 500.
“Our associates get so pumped up to participate in this event,” says Robert Hazard, manager of Market 187 and former manager of Store 5497. “We usually need 50 to 70 volunteers and never have a problem finding people.”
The associates unloaded food from trucks and then organized and packed it into bags. For many, the highlight was giving the packages to families.
“The best part is seeing the children’s faces,” says Pam Longton, personnel coordinator. “It’s just heartwarming to go to the event and see how grateful the members of the military are for everything Walmart does for them.”
THANK YOU, STORE 5497: “I want to thank the management team at Store 5497,” says Tonia Russell, northeast regional board member, Operation Homefront. “They made sure our military men and women had everything they needed for a great holiday.”

A trail of kids follows Santa and Mrs. Claus as they walk the aisles of Store 361 passing out candy. Charles “Charlie” Geer, sales associate, hardware, is behind the beard; at his side is Elsie McCartney, department manager, fabrics and crafts. Some customers stop for a selfie, and others line up at the Photo Center for a more formal portrait.
Elsie, a 35-year associate, has dressed up as Mrs. Claus for years to raise money for veterans. About seven years ago, she asked Store Manager Matt Gehrs if she could play Mrs. Claus in the store for the holidays. Soon after Charlie joined the store, he volunteered to be Santa. Since then, the Clauses have been ushering the holiday spirit into their store.
Charlie enjoys the reactions he gets from fellow associates when he puts on the suit. “Everyone from customer service managers to maintenance gets a kick out of seeing me and saying, ‘Hi, Santa! How are ya?’ ”
For Elsie, the best part of being Mrs. Claus is seeing the kids’ reactions. “When they make pictures and bring them to you and write little letters—that’s precious.”

Jeremy Safranic
Asset Protection Manager
Store 3784 Franklin, Ohio
The headline was heartbreaking: “7-year-old boy found trying to sell teddy bear for food.” The news story told of how the boy and his six siblings had been severely neglected, living in terrible conditions. After reading the story, associate Jeremy Safranic knew the team at his store could help.
Jeremy asked his store manager about arranging a shopping trip for the children and their grandmother. Five days later, six of the children were in the store shopping, each child accompanied by an associate.
“The kids gave all the associates hugs,” Jeremy says. “Having their own shoppers took pressure off Grandma so she didn’t have to walk around trying to find what each child wanted.”
Missy Smith, department manager, stationery, shopped with the 7-year-old. “He got so excited and kept asking if he could have markers,” she says. “You could tell the children weren’t used to having anything; they didn’t want to put things in the cart.”
The associates continue to help the family. Recently, they raised money to help buy winter coats for the children.
THANK YOU, JEREMY: “I want to thank Jeremy for treating our customers like family,” says Store Manager Stan Miller. “That’s what our store has always been about.”

When Hurricane Katrina swept into the Gulf Coast in 2005, one of the cities hit hardest was Waveland, Miss. Miles of neighborhoods were destroyed; 25 people lost their lives.
During that time, Store 1195 became a place where community members reconnected. The first Christmas after the storm was hard, so Madeline Miller asked herself how she could help. “I don’t have much,” she recalls thinking at the time, “but I can buy a box of Christmas cards.”
Madeline started handing out cards to customers as they came into the store and soon went through a 36-card pack. So she bought another box of cards, and then another. The small gesture resonated so much with customers that it has become a yearly tradition.
“Somebody else can do something big and important like a soup kitchen,” she says, “but this is my light. I will do it as long as I am able.”
THANK YOU, MADELINE: “I’d like to thank Madeline for her smile and for her kindness,” says Store Manager James Cox.

A Caring Network Agnes finds strength in family and friends through good times and bad.
My Walmart family has always been there for me. When my daughter passed away unexpectedly 11 years ago, they helped me through. People brought food and cards and listened to me when I came back to work and needed someone to talk to.
I took in my grandson after his mother died. We’ve helped each other through tough times. I’m so thankful for all of my family and all the associates and management here at Walmart. They are my world.

Floored A few encouraging words provided lasting inspiration for Danny.
When I was 18, my manager had us clean the store to get ready for Sam Walton. We even waxed the floors. Sam visited the next morning after bird hunting and brought Ol’ Roy.
It was a lot of fun to have his dog at the store, but he was a little muddy from the fields. My manager had me follow them with a mop.
I’ll never forget how Sam turned around, shook my hand, and said, “Danny, I really appreciate the work you’re doing here.” It meant a lot to me that someone so important would take the time to thank someone in my position. I knew then that Walmart was truly the place for me.

Walmart China recently marked its 20th anniversary with a celebration at Store 1059 in Shenzhen. About 300 people were invited, including 150 local associates.
Festivities included dance performances, the Walmart cheer, and a video message from Doug McMillon, president and CEO of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.
“The 20-year anniversary is a proud moment for all of us who have been with the company over these years,” says Dragon Qiu, general manager of Store 1059. “It is recognition of our hard work.”
The ceremony is part of a full year of anniversary celebrations, which included a new community service campaign and an associate singing contest. Also, the Walmart Food Safety Collaboration Center opened in Beijing, with the goal of increasing food safety awareness and fostering more trust in China’s food system.
The first two Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., locations in China opened on Aug. 12, 1996—Store 2701 and Sam’s Club 6505, both in Shenzhen.
Celebrate China!
Dirk Van den Berghe, president, Walmart Asia, and president and CEO, Walmart China, and other dignitaries pour the water of blessing into a 20th anniversary ice sculpture.

In Memoriam
In his book, Walmart Inside Out, Ron Loveless jokes that his hometown of Hiwasse, Ark., was so small “the city limits were on opposite sides of the same sign.”
He was hired by Sam Walton as a stock boy and eventually became senior vice president and the first CEO of Sam’s Club. Sam said Ron “relished a challenge.” From leading an Evel Knievel–inspired merchandising stunt as a store manager in the ’70s to building the Sam’s Club division in the ’80s, he thought of retail as an adventure and of his associates as family.
He retired in the ‘80s but remained a mentor to many in the company. His book is a candid insider’s tale about growing with Walmart.
Ron was committed to Walmart’s core values and devoted to our customers and associates. In his book, his first piece of advice for success is to enjoy what you do. He talks about the personal joy of building a good merchandise display on an end cap and watching it sell. Retail, he said, was in his blood.
He took seriously Sam’s idea that working at Walmart should be fun. He was famous for his tongue-in-cheek LEIR—the Loveless Economic Indicator Report—which turned his childhood experience with chickens into a playful presentation about economic forecasts.
“I had fun at Walmart,” Ron wrote. He leaves behind a lot of smiles and a legacy of engaged leadership.
Remembering Ron LovelessThis stock boy to stockholder used humor to lead and mentor associates. He passed away in October at age 73.

Store 1585 North Platte, Neb.
Gina is a VPI champion. When she was a support manager, she used the program to inspire her overnight stockers. One of the associates won the store, the market, and extra cash. With VPI, you can be a champion simply by getting fellow associates involved. That’s a big win!

Picture-Perfect Ed Francowic, Photo Center technician, enjoys helping people save their favorite memories. When a customer wanted to do something special with the photos on her phone but didn’t know where to start, Ed was happy to assist. “She seemed like she knew what she wanted—she just didn’t know how,” says Ed. “That’s what I’m here for.”
Ed helped her edit and print her photos, and then he transferred them to a CD. According to Assistant Manager Mike Cross, the customer was simply delighted with the results. “Ed helped in a way that only he could,” Mike explains. “He’s always going out of his way to help customers.”
