The school year is well under way, and it’s surprising how quickly it is going. I would like to thank everyone for your support of our terrific Literacy Night in November, and for at- tending parent teacher conferences. The PTA sponsored Holiday Breakfast is always such a fun event as well. Thank you for attending, participating, and volunteering, it is so ap- preciated. Maintaining these connections with school is so important for students, teachers and families. As we get into the season of more breaks from school, please maintain academics at home with your child. Independent and family reading time, computer math games, and RAZ kids reading programs are all great ways to do this. Limiting screen time is important, but allowing some technology with educational games, etc. can be motivational for kids. I hope you have plenty of time to spend quality time together as a family, and enjoy your children over the long break as well. We are also in the cold and flu season. Teachers are work- ing to keep rooms clean and reminding students to cough and sneeze into their elbows, and use tissues appropriate- ly. Getting lots of sleep and drinking fluids is critical to keep- ing kids healthy and in school for their learning as well. Thank you for getting your child to school every day so that they can learn, achieve and succeed! We hope you have a healthy and happy holiday season! THE PBIS MINUTE: (Positive Behavior Intervention Support) Character Strength: Social Intelli-gence

Hello Friends! The PBIS team has been working hard on supporting positive student behavior. We recently discovered through our data that referrals for physical contact and physical aggression on the playground and disrespect in the classroom were on the rise. In order to help reteach safe, respectful, and responsible behaviors in these areas we had several students help us make a video! We showed appropriate vs inappropri-ate playground behavior and appropriate vs inappropri-ate classroom behavior. We showed the video to the students at our last PBIS assembly. They seemed to re-spond well when other students were teaching them the right vs the wrong way to do things. We could use some help from home though! If you could remind your students that when they are in unstructured areas like the playground, hallway, cafeteria or bus they need to make better choices and when they are in the classroom to be as respectful as possible toward the adult (teacher, substitute or assistant) that would be fan-tastic! Our next assembly is Friday December 15th and it is PAJAMA DAY!!! Fun times. Please make sure the pa-jamas are warm enough and cover everything! Have a great winter break! ATTENDANCE AND TARDIES A Key to your Student’s Success

S chools are responsible for teaching your child, BUT schools can’t do their job if your child is absent. Learning builds day by day. A child who misses a day of school misses a day of learning. Research shows that children who are in school most of the time do better on state tests. Being late for school also hurts your child’s learning. A student who is 10 minutes late every day will miss 30 hours of instruc-tion during the school year. Students can copy notes or make up assignments, BUT they can never get back what’s most important—the discussions, the questions, the explanation by the teacher and the thinking that makes learning come alive. Your child’s success in school depends on having a solid education background—one that can only be gained through regular and

on time school attendance!

STU- DENTS ARRIV- ING & LEAV- ING EARLY

P lease remember the EARLIEST students can be dropped off is 7:30 am M,T,TH,F & 8:30 on Wednesdays. Students are not su-pervised prior to this time so if you drop off your children early you may be getting a call to come back for them! Drop off students at the front doors ONLY. When students need to leave early, they may not always be in their classrooms. They may be in PE, Music, Library, in a different class-room for Buddy Reading or at a recess. IF you want your child excused early, PLEASE send a written note to your child’s teacher. A note given to the teacher in advance will allow them time to make sure your student gets all their daily assignments.

Kindness is like snow. It beautifies everything it covers.

Early Pick-up Message Anytime that you plan on picking up your child early please write a note or call us by 12:30 pm so that we have time to notify their teacher of this change and can get them to the office in a timely manner. On Fridays, all students go outside for a Bo-nus Recess and it is very difficult to locate them at the last minute. If you must pick up your student at the last minute please do so prior to 1:40. We are discouraged from pulling students off of the bus, which slows down transportation for other students. Thank you for planning ahead.

Pleasant Valley Canned Food Drive

November 13– December 2

Please deliver or send nonperishable items with your stu-dents. We would like cereal, boxed mixes, beans, canned soups, meats, vegetables and fruits. We also welcome toi-letries, laundry items, soaps and paper products. Items donated will go to families in the Centennial School District through the Centennial High School FBLA’s non profit business “Food For Families”. For more information, go to http://www.food4families.net.

Are you moving? If you are planning on moving out of

the Pleasant Valley attendance area, please call the of-fice staff at 503-762-3209. This way we can help make the transition work to the benefit of your student.

Please Remember Pick–up and Drop-off is always to be done in the front of the building. Please use the inside lane for students get- ting in and out of the car. The left lane is for ex-iting only. We do not want children to be left in the parking lot with no adult supervision and/or during an unexpected school closure due to weather, water or power issues.

Please make sure you send your

child to school with proper winter cloth-ing. We send students outside for recess as often as possible.
