Dear Families of Owen Elementary,
It is hard to believe that December is here! We will all soon be en-joying our long winter break in a few weeks. We still have many ac-tivities planned at Owen and in the District before the break. See the calendar to your right for these important dates and times. We have the Winter Party on Thursday, December 22nd to plan and we are always looking for help with this school-wide party. Please contact Melissa Naffziger if you can help. It is only through the dedication of our members that we can provide these wonderful opportunities for our students.
I would like to thank everyone who donated gently used coats and boots for the Winter Coat Drive. The Indian Prairie Parents Council (IPPC) Winter Coat and Boot Drive in October was a huge success. The Indian Prairie Parents Council (IPPC) was able to collect over 1,600 items this year. They collected 682 coats, 157 pairs of boots, 450 hats/gloves or mittens, 183 snow pants and 186 sweaters/sweatshirts. These items will go to families in need within our com-munity. The IPPC is working to develop new programs to continue assisting families in our community during these tough times.
With the new year fast approaching, 2012 will provide us with a “New Year and New Opportunities” to strive for providing the best environ-ment for all children to reach their potential. The first new PTA pro-gram that we have is the Owen Science Fair on January 31st. This exciting opportunity is open to K-5 students and promises to be a fun and exciting night. Please see the information on page 4. I hope that you will all be able to join us in this important event.
I hope that everyone will have a safe and happy Winter Break and that as we prepare for the New Year – We look up to the New Year with new hopes, new aspirations and promises – May it bring you happiness and fulfill all your wishes.

From the Principal’s Desk Jason Bednar, Principal, Owen Elementary
Recess in the winter is a slightly different situation than in the fall or the spring. If the temperature
falls below 5° Fahrenheit with windchill, students will have indoor recess. When we are able to have
outdoor recess, students will need to have boots and snow pants if they want to play in the field. Stu-
dents wearing regular pants or shoes will be limited to the blacktop area. This is to prevent a student
having to sit in wet clothes for the whole afternoon. We also encourage parents to help students re-
member to dress warmly enough for outdoor activities since we try to maximize the number of out-

Owen Student Council News
Student Council will host the School Store on December 1st during all lunch times. The store sells small
school supplies for reasonable prices. Parent Volunteers are needed to help at this and future store events.

Charitable Donations Needed Throughout December, Student Council will be collecting new and gently used hats,
scarves, and gloves for Hesed House. Students can put items in the sharing bins outside
their classrooms.

Moms and Muffins The first Moms and Muffins will take place on
Friday Dec. 2nd at 8AM in the multi-purpose room at Owen. Moms and children can enjoy muffins, donuts, milk and juice before school. This is a free PTA sponsored event and a lot of fun!!! If you could send me an email and let me know how many will be attending it would be great. You do not have to reply to attend though. This will run until the first bell rings for school. If anyone is willing to help out with this event I could use 2 volunteers. It only involves picking up some items on the way and helping set up and clean up the day of the event. Looking forward to seeing you there...

Winter Party The Winter Party is scheduled for December 22nd. Last year was the first year that we had this party, which means we have something to go on! We planned a party for K-2 and another party for 3-5...each party included activi-ties appropriate for the age. However, since a majority of the kids will attend the same party (i.e. 1st Graders will still have the same party as 2nd Graders), we need to refresh some of the ideas! If you are interested in helping with the planning process, please respond to this email. Involvement will include a few meetings (mostly in the evening) plus help the day of the party coordinating infor-mation to each of the grade levels. Thank you for your consideration! November 5 R’s Recap
Last month, our students learned all about the 5 R’s.
Most of them knew about Reuse, Reduce and Recycle.
But we also talked about Rot and Respect. Rot reminds
us to compost our organic “waste” into a usable resource
and to think about how long it takes things to degrade.
Although some plastic containers are considered
“recyclable” one or two times, they still use a lot of re-
sources to become reusable. Compostable waste that
will safely degrade back into the earth is a much health-
ier alternative. Respect reminds us that all of our re-
sources are precious and deserve our thoughtful con-
sumption.
With our theme in mind, we recycled our old crayon
pieces into cool new multicolored crayons. Take 1/4 to
1/2 inch crayon pieces of various colors, place them into
silicone cookie and ice cube forms (with fun seasonal
shapes!), place forms on foil covered cookie sheets,
bake them at 180° for 15 minutes, cool completely be-
fore removing. Idea is from Family Fun magazine.
Ms. Dolan read Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, a wonderful book
about the consequences of not respecting the environ-
ment. The students really enjoyed this classic tale.
Finally, we recycled used greeting card covers by mak-
ing them into gift card holders. Students commented
that these clever containers could also be used to hold
jewelry, the crayons we made, candy or any other small

Clip Them and Send Them In! Two easy ways for all Owen families to get involved in helping raise funds for the school and the PTA are through the Box Tops for Education and the Labels for Education programs. Box Tops and Labels UPC's are on so many of the products that we already use in our homes, so it is as easy as cutting them off the packages before you recycle them, and sending them into school. We have PTA members who do the rest! Box Tops for Education Box Tops are found on many products including General Mills cereals, Pillsbury products, Kleenex tissues, and even Avery office supplies. Just look for the Box Tops emblems, cut them off and send them in to school. Each Box Top we submit is worth $.10, which can really add up. Last year, the PTA made close to $1000 by sending these in. This year we hope to double that number! Also, look for products that have bonus Box Tops and Bonus Certificates that may be issued at the time you check out with your register receipt. Labels for Education The Labels for Education program rewards participating schools by trading labels for items for our school. Labels for Education are now available on over 2,500 participating products such as Campbell's Soup, Post Cereals, Prego and People Magazine. To contribute to the collec-tion, just clip the Labels for Education logo with the UPC code from the participating products listed on the link then send them to school with your child or drop them in the bin by the eleva-tor next to the LMC. You can also register your Jewel-Osco Preferred Customer Card and/or your Dominick's Fresh Val-ues Card at www.eLabelsAddUp.com to earn points toward Labels for Education. Simply create an account at www.eLabelsForEducation.com by registering your Jewel-Osco Preferred Customer Card and/or your Dominick's Fresh Values Card and selecting our school. Each participating product

Meet the Owen PTA Board Members
Kim Williams, IPPC Representative
I am originally from Philadelphia and moved here in 1995 when
my husband was transferred. I am a Registered Dietitian and
am currently teaching at Aurora University, and work as an
Out-Patient Nutrition Educator at Rush Copley on a consulting
basis. In addition to the PTA, I volunteer with Cub Scout Pack 5
and as a Girl Scout Troop Leader. I teach bible study to 4th
graders at Knox Presbyterian Church and participate in Church
Women United. In addition to serving as PTA Indian Prairie
Parents’ Council Representative, I am the Helping Hand Coordi-
nator for Owen.
Pattie Bolek, IPSN Liaison
My husband and I are originally from the far south suburbs and NW Indi-
ana. We married in 2001 and chose to stay in Naperville as my husband is
employed at Alcatel-Lucent Technologies.
Prior to becoming a parent, I enjoyed traveling with my husband. After our
daughter, Kaitlyn was born in 2003, we built a home in the far southwest
corner of Naperville. Andrew joined our family in 2007. Currently, Kaitlyn
is in 2nd grade at Owen in Special Education and Andrew is in his second
year at Prairie Children Preschool. My daughter’s special education needs
are too in-depth to write about here, but I will say that we are incredibly
blessed to be in District 204 based on the amazing strides that she has made
and the fact that we will most likely be mainstreaming to our home school
(Kendall) next year!
I call myself a “Full-Time Mom with a Part-Time Job” as I am still employed at Northwestern Memorial Hos-
pital as a Registered Nurse. This is currently my 13th year at NMH and I am one of the Charge Nurses on a
crazy, hectic Ortho-Neuro-Spine-Plastic Surgery and Telemetry unit. Prior to that, I worked for 10 years in a
physician’s office specializing in both Pediatrics and Allergy/Dermatology.
In my spare time, I enjoy scrapbooking. You wouldn’t know that as I am about 4 years behind on Kaitlyn and
1 year behind on Andrew’s book. It is my hope that once I have two children in school ALL DAY, I will be
able to get caught up again!
For me, volunteering for PTA is all about networking and finding a common ground. As the Special Needs
Liaison for the Owen PTA, I appreciate that I am able to share news and events of the Special Needs stu-
dents/families as well as find ways to include them in the general school events to the best of my ability.
My goal as IPSN Liaison is to spread awareness of the different types of special needs many children face in
their school day. I am pleased to say that all of my daughter’s friends are actually in the general education
setting and look past her “differences” and see her as just another little girl in school. It is obvious that her
friends have been raised to look past differences and to treat others as equals. And for that, I have you all to
thank! Thank you for making my daughter’s experiences at Owen a great one!
Each month, we will share a little information about our PTA Board Members. We currently have 17
board members. Board Members meet once a month and oversee 45 coordinators and committees
that bring all the PTA educational and social programs to Owen students and families.

Meet the Owen PTA Board Members
Sunitha Narayanan, PDAC Liaison
I was born in India and lived there for twenty five years. I completed
my undergraduate degree from Bangalore University, India. After
Rajesh and I were married, I came to live in the U.S. and our family
has lived in the District for the last ten years. Most of my early years
here, I indulged in painting and pottery while I was acculturating to
my new environment.
As a certified Montessori teacher, I worked at the Montessori school
that our son Tarun was enrolled in. Later, with our second child Ur-
milla in school, I returned to education - this time as a student and
completed a Graduate degree in Social work with an emphasis in
school social work from the University of Chicago, School for Social
Service Administration. My husband Rajesh, works in IT at Office
Max, Our son Tarun is a sixth grader at Still and Urmilla is a second
grader at Owen.
In the last few years, my volunteering experience outside of Owen has been at Rush Copley Hospital - in ER
and Day surgery; Chinmaya Mission - school for Vedanta (the Sunday school based on Hinduism). In addition
to volunteering I teach art to children.
Mary Frances Koyl, Publicity Chair
I grew up in Shorewood, IL and now live on the border of Naperville & Aurora with
my husband and two boys. Before becoming a parent, I lived, went to college and
worked in Chicago for 10 years where I met my husband, Chris. After receiving my
bachelor’s degree, I worked for the American Cancer Society as a fundraiser, event
coordinator and volunteer manager. While starting a master’s degree in post secon-
dary education, I worked for Loyola University Chicago in Student Affairs manag-
ing the student activity fund and advising student organizations in programming
and event planning. I “retired” almost 11 years ago to become a stay-at-home mom.
And I am just starting to get the itch to go back to work.
In our spare time, we enjoy visiting family across the US and Canada. I love going
out to hear live music I also help out with my sons’ Cub Scouts group as a popcorn captain.
I enjoy volunteering for PTA because it allows me to meet other parents and get to know the teachers and
staff at Owen. It makes me feel connected to my children’s education experience. As Publicity Chair, I intend
spread the word about the numerous programs and events Owen PTA brings to our students.
Patty Stich, Health and Safety Chair
I have lived in Naperville for the past ten years with my three children, Morgan, Jack, and Emily.
Before becoming a parent, I was Director of Operations for a managed care company for many years before
entering Education. I earned a Masters Degree in Education after working 15 years in the health insurance
field. I am an Assistant Professor of Health Information Technology at Waubonsee Community College in
Aurora. I volunteer as a swim instructor for kids with autism. I am the President of the Brighton Ridge
Homeowners Association. I have also been a strength coach for the past four years at Benet High School for
the girls and boys swimming and diving teams. As well as a Masters Swim instructor at Lifetime Fitness in
Warrenville, Il.
I am a two time Ironman Finisher in 2009 and 2011, long distance swimmer and avid baseball fan.
Volunteering for PTA affords me with the opportunity to make a difference in the community while giving
back. My goals for PTA are to increase awareness about health and safety. Provide activities to educate chil-
dren to live healthy and be safe.

A Message from Cub Scouts
Hi I’m Cole Williams from Cub Scout Pack #5. For my communicator badge I decided to write these paragraphs about being a scout for the PTA newsletter. Here they are!
Being a scout. I love being a scout. Part of being a scout is the ranks. The ranks go by grade level, Tiger is 1
st grade , Wolf is 2
nd , Bear is 3
rd , Webelos 1
is 4th
, and Webelos 2 is 5th. You must achieve all of the requirements
of the ranks before you move up. You also must follow the scout law.
What you do in scouting. One of the main things in scouting is camping. Most of the time you will camp with your Pack, but you may have den campouts too. In Pack #5 we have some competitions: The Pinewood Derby, the Rain Gutter Regatta, and the Cake Bake. We also go on some hikes and outings such as a hike in Cantigny or Feed My Starving Children.
Why you should be a scout. I think that being a scout is great! I’ve been in scouts since 1
st grade, but you could start in 5
th grade.
I’ve entered in every contest they’ve had and I’ve only won once. But I still love it! So please, please join! The End!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Join the Owen Parent Teacher Association PTA Membership forms were sent home in the School Registration packets but if you
forgot to join, it’s not too late! It is only $15 per family to join.
Membership gives you one vote at PTA meetings, a free copy of the Student Direc-
tory, and important PTA news updates through the PTA email announcements. It is
also a great opportunity to volunteer with school programs and events, meet other parents and become
more involved with our school.

Owen PTA Board Positions Available
We have an exciting school year planned with many PTA sponsored activities and events. We
are looking for a few more parent volunteers to join us in leadership roles on the PTA Board.
Most Chairperson positions only require a few hours a month of your time. If you are in-
terested or have any questions, please contact Jen Barron, 2nd Vice President, at jenniferbar-
Budget and Finance Chair: A volunteer is needed to work with the Treasurer to monitor and
maintain the budget. This person would also serve on the PTA Board and attend all board and
general meetings.
Educational Enrichment Chair II: A chairperson is needed to oversee the event coordinators
of the Green Owls Club and Young Author Program/student generated books (KinderPress,
First Edition, Going2Press, Publishing Center in grades 3-5). This person would also serve on
the PTA Board and attend all board and general meetings.
Legislative Representative: A chairperson is needed for coordinating PTA efforts regarding
legislation that affects children. This person would also serve on the PTA Board and attend all
board and general meetings.
Service Chair: A chairperson is needed to oversee the Apparel, Community Service, Kinder-
garten Parent Preview Night, Kindergarten Orientation, Picture Day and School Supply Kit co-
ordinators. This person would also serve on the PTA Board and attend all board and general
meetings.

PTA Volunteer Opportunities
Head Room Parents needed in many of our Classrooms
We are in need of many Grade Level Coordinators and Head Room Parents for the remainder of the year. We need these in place to begin planning for the Winter Party (sign-ups were in the LMC on Curriculum Night). Following are descriptions of the positions: Grade Level Coordinator: This individual will oversee the head room parents and assist them in planning for the Curriculum/Winter Party and any other grade specific activities. Head Room Parent: This individual will be the point person for classroom volunteers and party planning for both the Curriculum and Winter parties (The Winter Party will be held in December and Curriculum parties are held in the spring). This person may also assist the teacher with any classroom activities that may require volunteers. Contact Melissa Naffziger at [email protected] for more information or to sign up.

Publicity Committee
A Scrapbook/Historian volunteer is needed to create a photo book of this year’s PTA activities. This is pro-ject can be done at home with a flexible timeline. We are also looking for a volunteer or volunteers to work on this Newsletter. This person or people would work a few hours a month on brainstorming ideas for the month, researching articles, working on layout or proofreading. Working on the newsletter is a great way to learn more about everything happening at Owen. Helping Hand Families Needed
The neighborhoods that attend Owen are in need of more families to participate in the Help-
ing Hand program.
The Helping Hand program was established in Naperville in 1967 through the combined ef-
forts of the Naperville Junior Woman’s Club and the Naperville Police Department.
The purpose of the program is to have adult aid available in an emergency situation, such
as a child being lost, frightened, injured or ill. The Naperville Police Department encourages
Helping Hand households to display the Helping Hand sign year-round as a crime deterrent, similar to the
Neighborhood Watch program. The Helping Hand sign is a white hand on a red background.
The police department performs background checks on all adult members of households who volunteer to
participate in this program. The purpose of the background check is to ensure that the Helping Hand program
is as safe as possible for area children.
