Chairman’s Christmas Message

It is hard to believe that Christmas is already upon us – where did the year go? Every year that passes seems to have a character of its own – low points and challenges – but also high lights which bring joy and gladness. Looking back over these past twelve months one sees that there has been quite a mixture of both. Year’s end is often a time of reflection and I should like to encourage you to look back and ‘count your blessings’ and be thankful for all of them, including our BSAP Regimental Association! It is also a time of hope and rejuvenation – a new start. We should be ever mindful of the need to commit ourselves again to the spirit of caring, sharing and generosity and to do our best at all times in whatever situation we find ourselves. Our Association requires that we all do our best to build on past experience and develop strategies for the future and contribute in whatever capacity we can. I am particularly aware of the valuable contribution made by the hardworking members of our committee who generously give of their time and expertise to ensure that our aims and aspirations are enacted, and also of the contribution made by our members who support our projects by attending, helping and often making generous donations. I should like to thank you all wholeheartedly. I should also like to mention all our members – you are the backbone of our Association. Your subscriptions are what enable us to perform our function and we are ever mindful of this. Annual subscriptions will be due shortly and timeous payments thereof would be greatly appreciated!

Our annual social functions have once again been very successful due to the wonderful support from members, associate members and guests. The monthly meetings at The View however, require a boost! September 2019 heralds the 130th anniversary of the British South African Police Force. Celebrations will be held in Johannesburg and many overseas and local members will be attending. Our aim is to make the anniversary functions a resounding success. The BSAP Transvaal Regimental Association is rich in heritage and, with your participation, we intend to take it forward into the future as a thriving and innovative association of which we all can be justifiably proud. On behalf of the committee and myself let me end by once again thanking you all for your support and commitment. We wish you a safe and happy festive season and a new year filled with health, peace, joy and also productivity and prosperity. Events The Curry & Rice lunch, held at the Ndaba Hotel on the 15th July was a great success. Ongoing regular gathering of members continue to take place, at the very popular venue of the Transvaal Scottish, the “View” in Park Town. The Curry and Rice was a huge success which took place on Sunday 15th July. Finally our sumptuous annual luncheon was held on Sunday 14th October at the Ndaba Hotel (see comments below).

THE GETTYSBURG ADDRESS

This has to be one of the finest pieces of writing ever ………

President Lincoln delivered the 272 word Gettysburg Address on November 19, 1863 on the battlefield near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania.

"Fourscore and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, on this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal. Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived, and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting-place for those who here gave their lives, that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this. But, in a larger sense, we cannot dedicate, we cannot consecrate—we cannot hallow—this ground.

The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be

Annual Luncheon (Sunday 14th October 2018)

The Transvaal Regimental Association annual luncheon was held on Sunday the 14th October at the prestigious Ndaba Hotel, Fourways , Johannesburg. Over 100 members and their wives/partners attended a sumptuous lunch. An outstanding venue providing a meal which was par excellence, and without doubt exceeded the expectations of the most ardent critics.

The guest speaker , Charles Drew (who by the way is the Manager of the Ndaba), entertained the guests with fascinating anecdotes of his youth and earlier life growing up and having to contend with the incursions from over the nearby Mozambique border. He recounted how he and his parents adapted to the changing environment on their farm , in the Melsetter district, and inevitably the illegal land invasion and forceable confiscation and occupation of their farm.

Liz, Ken’s daughter very kindly sent me the following interesting story and photos of her late father Ken Humphrey. “My Dad was born in Watford England, on 30 September 1925 to Archibald and Ellen Humphreys.

Ken’s father WW1.

From all reports he enjoyed a normal childhood. The family lived in Surbiton, a suburban neighbourhood of south-west London within the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames. Situated next to the River Thames, 18 km south west of Charing Cross and part of the historic county of Surrey. Scholastically he could best be described as an average student with limited enthusiasm for school work, he was at heart an adventurer, the world was in turmoil, WWII was raging. So abandoning his tedious life as a scholar, and leaving home on the pretext of spending a few days with a friend, they both headed to the local Royal Navy recruitment office and enlisted in the Royal Navy, and soon were sailing off to India. Need-less to say his mother on hearing the news was totally devastated, after all her son was only 17 years old. A mature looking and very tall lad for his age at 6ft 4in he some-how managed to convince the recruiting officer that he was 18yrs old. According to “family legend” he matured very fast in India. Regrettably and unlike his father, Ken loathed India. He had an abhorrence of spicy food and soon developed perforated peptic ulcers as a consequence of eating the hot India food !

Dad remained passionate about ships throughout his life. In his retirement he loved to do the evening security duty on the ships, in Port Elizabeth harbour. I remember him being particularly agitated and remonstrative when, at the ripe age of 78yrs, he was instructed that he could no longer climb the steel ladders to carry our inspections of the ships turrets for stow-a-ways. On returning to England, after WWII he studied as an apprentice and once qualified, Ken was elected as a Licentiate of the Institution of Valuers in 1949. He soon became restless and on reading the recruitment poster for the British South Africa Police he immediately went to London and signed up. His mother who was convinced that her son had now settled down and when she heard the news of his latest exploit was inconsolable.

Dad possessed an incredible sense of humour and during the ensuing years sent his mother a strip of biltong explaining it was a “strip of drift wood”, she proudly displayed the biltong on her mantelpiece for years – boasting

to all her visitors that it was from Africa. She would also recount her dread of visiting Rhodesia due to her terror of “veldskoens”…… “A furry 2 tongued monster that snuck under beds, usually in pairs”.

He was stationed in Gatooma, then Gwanda, as a member of the Mounted Police, and later Highway Patrol.

He was an out-doors man and from all accounts he thoroughly enjoyed his many horse-back patrols nearly as much as he did driving fast Highway Patrol cars and motorbikes.

From Gwanda we moved to Bulawayo and then later to Salisbury. Dad married my mother, Isabel Brand at a large wedding in Gwelo in December 1956, and they initially settled in Gatooma, where I was born in October 1957. Percy Milner was Dad’s best man, and my god father. Percy left for Canada after the wedding to serve with the famed Canadian Mounties. Eventually retiring in Wales. Whilst stationed in Gwanda he returned from a patrol to find my Mum lying in a cupboard. It turned out that she was terrified of thunderstorms, especially if Dad was away from home. Isabel was a well-known journalist who entered the world of public relations after the Herald was gagged.

While working in the Morris Depot, he furthered his studies and after 22yrs of service with the BSAP (with a push from my Mum) he retired with the rank of Inspector in 1972. After his retirement he joined the Police Reserve and served for many years in Gwelo where he was working as an Industrial Relations officer.

Dad in “Camo”- Police reserve

In 1980 we relocated from Rhodesia to Port Elizabeth where he joined the Moth Shell Hole and remained an active member until his death on the 16th September 2005, a few days before his 80th birthday. Sadly Ken’s son Richard had died 5 days prior to him. Ken’s funeral also included a memorial for Richard who was also a member of the PE Shell hole. Interestingly my brother Richard served his military service in the Rhodesian Air Force.

Dad was one of four generations of Military service men. In the 1900’s the world seemed to have gone crazy and was permanently at war. Sadly in those times war appeared to be accepted as a way of life!

Picture was printed on glass. (Luckily I had taken a picture before it

fell and shattered). My Dad’s grandparents (mother’s side), during the Boer war.

My older sister Joan Humphreys, died 5 years ago, and a Reverend Terry Sprong presided over the service in Lymington UK. Terry was, as some of the older members may recall, a well-known Chaplain in Salisbury. During a casual chat with Dad’s sister and second cousin, Liz Downey and Juliette Elliot, prior to my Aunt Joan’s cremation, Reverend Terry Sprong mentioned he had been a recruit in the BSA Police and recalled that an English guy had a sister who had nursed in Lymington. Remarkably Terry and my father had been in the same depot recruit squad together. He produced an old squad photo of squad 5 of 1950 (see below) and there they were ! What an incredible and utterly amazing co-incidence……….

Warning - on proof reading the article , I suggest only those who have little else to do, should continue and read on , and those a little straight laced, left wing or squeamish about the human anatomy go no further. Greetings, I thought I might provide some utterly useless information, about people (myself) and my rather sedate lifestyle, while not very old, the milometer is ticking on.

Something that must have looked hilarious at 05:30 last Thursday morning, was me heading off for my golf day. I slipped on the top internal stair in my house and bounced uncontrollably down twenty flights, or would that be risers, or steps maybe? Landing on the tiles at the base. After a very painful appraisal of my physical shape, I decided if I could patch up the hole in my right elbow, I should be good to go. Being on the top quality level of blood thinners (old age stuff!!) I observed a small fountain of red coloured liquid pulsating out of my right elbow. I got to the first aid kit, and with some difficulty managed to curtail the discharge. My canine supervisor returning from a patrol of the "Australian beaches”, was extremely helpful, and I guess thankful, as he efficiently did a clean-up of the scene, (my later return, showed evidence of his prowess in such duties, the only claret I had to clean up was on the walls, above the height he was unable to reach). Patched up, I went to golf, where a golfing partner, re-dressed the wound. I played great golf, scoring an even par off my embarrassing 21 handicap. While positioned on the nineteenth fairway, enjoying the comradeship of my fellow golfers, I decided I might drop into the local doctor, to see whether he considered a stitch or two might assist a more rapid recovery. The Doctor, was one of the new multicultural breed in Australia, originating from, well I am not certain, but either, Somalia, Nigeria, Kenya, somewhere like that, I never asked, but the evidence was clear to see. With a young nurse in attendance, a number of stitches were applied, and on standing, the Dr asked if there was anything else he could do to help. I informed him that my right buttock felt odd. The young nurse took a gander and shrieked. Of course I was unsighted, and remained ignorant of what had been discovered.

The Dr, had a look, and instructed the Nurse to call an ambulance. It was imperative I been taken to the local hospital immediately. We all know how slow things are in public hospitals. So I shan't bore you with the general genealogy of Chinese, African and Eastern Block medical staff I had to explain myself to, and I might add display " my derriere to" all of which including passing orderlies and even one lady cleaner, all examined my "buttocks" with an apparent deep interest. Eventually all the usual drips, two cannula's (why two I enquired- "protocol sir, in case of Surgery", the threat and provision for a catheter, (now that was a worry!) heart and temperature monitors, were applied and I was transported to the MRI unit for an in depth examination of my, now highly viewed posterior. I had asked for, but been refused a photograph of what was so interesting. While being prepared for the MRI, a nurse remained in attendance at my side. The technician, a very good looking young lady, probably of Middle Eastern descent, with long green hair down to her waist, a wicked sense of humour and a bright smile, went about her business. I had been, lying on my back ready for what-ever was to happen, for some half an hour. The young lady technician, then put her hand on my bare chest, save the multitudes of wires, and stickers, and with a smile said, "Please you pull your pants down". At 71 years of age, we have a licence that few younger can qualify for. I said, "Do you know you are the first young lady to ask me that in the past 35 years!" The nurse on my left gave me a stern stare, and the Middle Eastern rep, screamed with laughter, saying, "I say that to men all the time". I now sit only using my left buttock, at an angle of about 45 degrees. Having personally examined what was of such great interest, I now have one white buttock and one jet black one! When another doctor came in, I presumed, again he had the same lineage and ethnicity, from whence I myself derived. Again I was too polite to ask the question, but the evidence was in plain sight. I said, "See Doc, African Federation!!! “.

In memory - Dave Tippetts (By John Trueman)

My earliest recollection of Dave was as a Constable stationed at Que Que Central charge office. If my memory serves me correctly it was in the mid-sixties. Dave at that time was a senior Sergeant stationed at Que Que Rural whose offices were located in the BSA Police Camp - he was second in charge to the late Inspector Le Guern. Unmarried members were incarcerated in the double storey and unpretentious government style single quarters in the Police Camp. My image of Dave was of a relatively shy, un-assuming and private person. He always gave the impression that he was deep in thought. A conscientious and dedicated policeman who had a roguish wry smile. An established marksman and a keen shotist. Despite Dave’s austere image he was caring and considerate towards his subordinates and was held him in high regard.

And so it was on one very hot and dry summer evening a parched and thirsty bunch of reprobates – Roger Barnard, Paddy Condon, Pete Long, Peter Moore, Tim Webb, Danny Werth and three or four others - drifted across from the single quarters to our favourite watering hole, the “Copper Pot”. A distance of no more than a hundred metres, travelling along a dusty vehicle track bordering a large open vlei . On our left was the official residence of the Officer Commanding, Que Que District. A salubrious and a well-appointed residence with lush rolling green lawns. A typical colonial style house decked with the familiar red corrugated iron roof. The occupant was C/Supt Jack Berry, a tall ex-military man who sported a neatly trimmed moustache, carrying himself ramrod up-right, a swagger stick tucked firmly under his left arm and a holstered P1 x 9mm semi-automatic pistol strapped to his right hip. An intimidating figure who expected every man “to conduct himself” in the true tradition of the Regiment. C/Supt Berry had a wicked sense of humour as we were about to find out. Dave and C/Supt Jack Berry held a common interest ; both were keen shotists and frequently participated together in organised Police and Military shooting competitions. Dave arrived at the “Copper Pot” some-time later, directly from his office, and still dressed in his police uniform. C/Supt Berry suddenly appeared and he and Dave were soon in a whispered and secretive discussion covertly glancing in our direction. Beers in the Police canteen were outrageously cheap, and a single Rhodesian $ could easily purchase up to six brown bottles containing a delightfully ice cold golden liquid, inflicting upon the imbiber a profound

desire for more. The Gods were kind to us, if you were short of cash, depending on your credit worthiness, you could ask for “tick”, so there was no reason to go without your favourite beverage ! We were so blessed ! I cannot recall the reason, not that a reason was needed, but it may have been at the time of the historic announcement of UDI , uninhibited and with recklessly abandonment we partook of the liquid refreshments , continuing well into the evening. As with all good things festivities finally came to an end. C/Supt Berry had departed some hours earlier. Those that had remained until the finality of festivities could best be described as being moderately inebriated. Supporting one another, in the true tradition of the Regiment, we embarked on our trip back to the single quarters. Dave surprisingly was now part of the group, his blue regulation Police tie uncharacteristically askew, strands of his dark hair clinging to his damp forehead, stoically holding his own. Noisily and with scant regard for other residents, as a band of rowdy boisterous brothers, singing dubiously the words of a rather risqué ancient pirate’s ballad - “By golly you should have seen us…. On the good ship Venus By goodness you should have seen us The figurehead was a ………..”

Weaving our way back to the hostile under an exceptionally bright moon-lit night, along the dusty vehicle track towards the single quarters. Arriving at a point immediately outside the front gate of the O/C’s house, which was now eerily in complete darkness. I turned around and noticed that Dave was no longer “bringing up” the rear.

Just the previous week the O/C had circulated a formal internal memo complaining bitterly about incidents of “Roof rattling”. Stones were being thrown upon the corrugated iron roof of his residence during the late hours of the evening. He was very distressed, and angrily announced that any member found to be involved in such impudent and irresponsible behaviour would be severely dealt with in terms of the Police Disciplinary Code and in addition would be summarily transferred to Gokwe. Gokwe as we all knew was the most distance posting in the District far away from civilisation, some likened it to being imprisoned in the penal colony in French Guiana. Obviously an oblique reference to the “Papilion” and his imprisonment on “Devils Island”. A few of our group held views none too complimentary of our leader. As could be imagined their disenchantment had been heightened by the effects of the alcohol. Without warning all hell broke loose - there was the distinct sound of stones rattling against a corrugated iron roof. Immediately followed by shots from a 9mm automatic P1 pistol accompanied with high pitched ranting from our Officer Commanding – “Now I have you , you drunken ill-disciplined rabble…..”. Initially paralaysed, but then suddenly stone cold sober we were galvanised into action in an act of self-preservation. Live rounds popping above our heads we “bomb shelled” ; scattering like “chaff” in the wind. It was some hours later deeming it safe to do so, we cautiously emerged from the undergrowth and made our way back to the single quarters , bearing cuts and bruises from numerous encounters with the uneven rocky ground and wicked acacia thorn bushes. Totally exhausted we gathered together and ruefully pledged secrecy to one another, then called it a night. Ominously I noticed that Dave was not present. The following morning we sheepishly arrived at the breakfast table bearing an assortment of cuts and abrasions. We anxiously waited to be summonsed before the

O/C, but no such thing. As the day passed we were astonished and relieved that no summons was issued. Dave, on the other hand was totally unscathed and had a renewed twinkle in his eye, never making any mention of the previous evenings events. Our pledge of secrecy seemed to have held or did we have an unknown guardian who had secretly conspired with a higher authority ? A true gentleman – for-ever remembered. RIP my dear friend.

A tribute to the late Peter Henry Stanton alias “Stroppy” (By Peter Strong)

In keeping with his stoic character, resilience and determination Peter battled valiantly to keep going to the end. But the very nature of his ailment was just too much for his body to endure any longer and sadly he passed away on 15 November 2018. Originally hailing from the North of England meant that from the beginning of his life all his stubborn resolve was ingrained in his soul. Peter epitomised no nonsense straight talking. His work ethic and integrity were beyond reproach.

His qualities were recognised by many highly respected service chiefs and their brave men on the ground. The units in which these men served represented a broad spectrum of services which were involved in combating hostilities. Sadly, Peter’s physical presence has gone. But we are left with precious memories and long may they endure. In the context of his professional life, his capacity for attention to detail, record keeping and the ability to focus on complicated operational issues to seek solutions were not only legendry but most importantly saved lives and secondly led to the conclusion of many successful external and internal operations. To be remembered is not only to recognise his talents, his courage, his many successes and his impish sense of humour but his total modesty and unassuming demeanour. In memory of 5786N Field Reserve J J S Kirkwood (DFC) The “gomo” man

James John Spencer Kirkwood was born ‘in Scotland on 3 February 1922 — although his birth was registered in London to which he escaped at a very early age. He arrived in Rhodesia in 1949 to take up farming after six years in the Royal Air Force where — as an air gunner and later as a pilot — he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, and the rank of Flight Lieutenant. He joined the Police Reserve in 1955 and, on moving from Banket to Salisbury, became a full-time PR instructor in 1960 with the rank of R/Sgt. Soon afterwards he was attached to the Police Reserve Headquarters staff at PGHQ and also became an active member of the then 'B' Reserve — a most unusual dual role only partially explained by the fact that Jim was regarded as a civil servant in his PGHQ capacity, rather than a full-time policeman. It is fair to say that Jim never gave up this "double life" even in later years. At the end of 1963 he changed his "civilian" employment to join the Public Services Board. He maintained his commitment to his PR role and within three years he was the "Administrative Officer" of the 'B' Reserve. After more than a decade of being "urbanised", Jim answered the call of the wilds made by PATU on the latter's formation and if— in his mid-forties — he could be maligned as being over the hill, he countered such insults by placing himself and other members of his PATU HQ section on top of the highest, almost un-scalable hills to maintain radio communications. Occasionally Jim and his companions were lashed by heavy winds and rain on some remote rocky “gomo”, he brought comfort, by the mere presence of his voice giving impromptu sports updates, to those troops in the field.

Regrettably, Jim who had long endured medical problems with his legs, sadly in 1978 had one of his legs amputated. On being visited in hospital by his OC, his concern was to be discharged in time to spend Christmas running the relay on his favourite mountain. Despite his handicap he refused to be excluded from involvement in the general elections, and joined the PATU standby details at their headquarters monopolising as much of the radio and the administrative chores as he was capable of handling. Almost overlooked here was Jim's later civil service role as secretary to the Minister of Law and Order during those hectic years. Police Club Secretary, Butch Buckley, fills in other aspects of Jim’s talent — "confined" to Jim’s earlier sporting achievements. "Jim's sporting career began at Chiswick School in England where he received colours for cricket, soccer and athletics. Cricket, however, was his first love and he represented the Middlesex Colts in 1946/47. When he arrived in Rhodesia in 1949 to turn his hand to farming, he played cricket in Banket. Moving subsequently to Ayrshire, he was a founder member of the Ayrshire Country Club, played for them from 1950 until 1960 and captained the team towards the end of the decade. On four occasions he played for the County Districts XI. Jim was an all-rounder — he used the new ball and batted at No.4. He played his cricket with good taste and reserve and his splendid quick bowling will be ruefully testified to by many Mashonaland Country District participants. He collected two centuries in the Districts Lithurbridge Cup Competition and against Shamva in 1959 he took all ten wickets for 42 runs. He moved to Salisbury in 1960 and joined the Police Sports Club. Although his playing career was just about over, the 2nd XI was having difficulties and we persuaded him to take the team under his wing. This he did efficiently, quietly and unobtrusively. Jim then turned from cricket to bowls where he became one of the stalwarts of that section. He won the Police Club Singles Championship in 1972, 1973 and 1977. This was

no mean feat especially with the 1977 Competition when his health was already failing. His grit and determination will always be an example for others. His sad passing will be felt by many." Final Tribute On behalf of PATU members, and Jim's many friends in the Force and throughout Zimbabwe Butch Buckley wrote the following tribute - "Jim Kirkwood served with the Royal Air Force during the Second War. He was initially employed as an Air Gunner, and was posted as a Pilot Officer to 158 Squadron in July 1944. It would appear, however, that he ‘awarded’ himself the D.F.C. as there is no record of him receiving it. Another ‘James Kirkwood’ of 207 Squadron was awarded the D.F.C. in January 1944, and he was later killed in action during the war. J. J. S. Kirkwood was awarded the M.S.M. (Security Forces Division) in November 1976, and the Police Reserve Long Service Medal in July 1971. Awards which he proudly displayed on official occasions. Communications were absolutely essential for PATU to function effectively. Many relay posts were established atop high Kopjes and manned by reservists deployed by helicopter. One such dedicated radio operator was James “Jim” Kirkwood, DFC. As air gunner and, later pilot, he had been shot down over France during the 1939-45 conflict. He managed to escape internment with the aid of French prostitutes who passed him from one brothel to another, giving rise to his claim that he was the only airman who had “fornicated his way to freedom. I was fortunate and privileged to have known Jim Kirkwood as a friend. The phrase 'the salt of the earth' could well have been coined especially for Jim. We will miss you. Rest in Peace my friend “.

Zimbabwe Government Pensions (with grateful thanks to the FLF)

There is nothing new with regards to unpaid Zimbabwe Government pensions. The second pensions schedule for R7.1 mln (November 2017 rate), due December 2016 (the period June - December 2016) is still lodged with the Zimbabwe Reserve Bank awaiting forex to be allocated. We have been told that the Pensions Office is preparing the schedules for subsequent pension payments. Rob Anderson is trying to get an appointment for himself, Turville Kille and Judge George Smith, with the new Minister of Social Services, hoping that she will be more sympathetic towards our pensioners.

They want to discuss unpaid pensions since 2016 and the problem for bedridden and others who are unable to visit Cape Town or Gauteng for Certificates of Life. We are not giving up; Rob still visits the Pensions Office weekly on our behalf. He also meets with a British Government Consular Official from time to time to discuss the pension situation. Widows applications PD2 and Reinstatement forms PD6 (for those Government pensioners who have not previously applied) are now available from the FLF office. New widows applications do not have to be submitted via the Embassy or Consulate. These go uncorrected, the pensions being retained in a Standard Bank holding account. • Overdue pensions of deceased pensioners are drawn into the deceased estate, and are not accessible to the deceased member’s spouse, the excuse being that Widows have not submitted either a Letter of Administration (if the Estate value is less than R250 000) or a Letter of Executorship (if the value exceeds R250 000). It is recommended that Widows forward these details when submitting their application for Widow’s Pension; • Pensioners are invited to phone Mrs Sweswe on 00263 24 2252371 for any queries related to their pension. Some further points: • If you did not formally emigrate from Zimbabwe, you cannot have your pension paid externally. Therefore, anyone in this position should look to working with a Zim-based relative to have their pension paid locally. • The minimum monthly pension is US$124.68. • A Widow’s Pension is purported to be 82% of their Late Husband’s Pension or US$124.68, whichever is the higher.

Book review “A Life Lived on the Edge”

Introduction by author Doug Stanyon

The book reveals 68 short stories, memoirs of the author. All the stories are based on actual incidents experienced by an operative on the ground, “in situ”. Many of the stories are told tongue in cheek. It is plain however the author was a character, who chose to live life on the “edge”, and with the defiance of youth, always pushed the boundaries he lived and worked in. The book is broken into three sections - (1964-1968) The first, the authors Police experience in Rhodesia, during the period of its Declaration of Independence from Britain. In particular as one of the first Policeman utilised to bring Law and Order to arguably the last Frontier area of the country, Chiredzi in the Lowveld.

The second is dedicated to world travel - (1968 -1971) The author spent three years hiking and working his way around the world. With experiences akin to the well-known works “The Drifters” He visited six Continents and 37 countries while traversing the globe. With experiences in Europe during the swinging sixties, to working in the Australian Desert and the jungles of New Guinea. The third section - (1971 -1980) Deals with his second round of employment within the Rhodesian Police. Revealing his activities as an anti-terrorist operative, during an eight year campaign, where 50,000 lives were lost . Employed in the CID, tasked with locating and reporting on terrorist activity and where necessary their prosecution. Attempting to save a once prosperous and highly developed nation, which was politically and expeditiously handed over to people with no ability to Govern. The evidence of that politically culpable decision, now available for world scrutiny. All police members are identified by regimental number and rank at the time of incidents. British South Africa Police Reunion - September 2019 - Johannesburg

The 130th anniversary of the establishment of the British South Africa Police takes place in 2019. We would like to mark this historical occasion with a celebration in Johannesburg, scheduled for September 2019.

At the out-set I believe it is appropriate to remind members of our origins, with a brief history lesson, covering the formation of the British South Africa Police, which saw its beginnings in the Royal Charter authorising the formation of the British South Africa Company (BSAPC) in 1889, prior to the Pioneer Column entering Rhodesia. Initially recruits received training at Macloutsie in Bechuanaland. (NB : Bechuanaland was a protectorate established on 31 March 1885, and now known as the Republic of Botswana). And so the British South Africa Police was born.

A unique opportunity presents itself for all of us, which most definitely includes wives and partners, to take time out to come together and renew our friendships.
