The night after Christmas, our 7 year old grandson set

the alarm clock that Santa had brought him. The next

morning when he was asked how the new alarm clock

was working he said “Great!

Only... it woke me up!”

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Seeing her mother applying makeup before her staff

Christmas party our four year old grand daughter asked

“Mommy, can I help you get decorated?”

Our third child was due in December. When we told

our 3 year old he’d be getting a baby brother or

sister for Christmas he commented

“I’d rather have a game boy.”

Why is my baby yellow?

For most babies jaundice is harmless and nothing for you to worry about. But if you think that your baby has jaundice, it is always best to let your midwife or doctor know. While in the hospital they will test baby’sblood by a heel prick.Jaundice is caused by the rapid destruction of the excess red blood cells babies are born with. Red blood cells help carry oxygen around the body. Inside the womb there is less oxygen, so babies have more blood cells than adults to compensate for this. After they are born, the excess red blood cells are broken down in the liver into bilirubin. Some babies cannot process the excess bilirubin quickly enough, either because their liver is immature or they have slightly higher levels of red blood cells than average. The bilirubin, a yellow substance, builds up in the blood, causing the yellow-tinged skin and eyes of jaundice. This normally starts two or three days after birth and lasts up to ten days.Breast-fed babies tend to develop jaundice more than formula-fed. This is because mothers’ milk takes two or three days to flow, so for the first couple of days babies who seemingly suckle well may not get enough milk from the breast. This means they do not get enough fluid to flush the bilirubin out. Ensuring they get adequate feeds and exposing them to daylight helps by making the bilirubin more soluble in the urine. Some causes include but not limited to: infection, blood group and RH incompatibility, prematurity, delayed feedings, bowel obstruction, intrauterine infections, cystic fibrosis, hepatitis, blood and liver problems. However, if a baby develops jaundice within the first 24 hours of life it can be a sign that they have some underlying problem. Those babies need immediate medical attention and investigation. Babies at increased risk of needing treatment for physiological jaundice include: Premature babies (less than 37 weeks); Small babies (less 6lb 3 ozs); Babies who do not feed early and frequently after the birth; Babies that have bruising (for example after a forceps, after a fast birth or being in a 'face presentation'); Babies who had fetal distress in labour or were slow to respond at birth; Babies whose mothers are diabetic; These babies can be born with low blood sugar levels that can interfere with the processing of bilirubin. Babies who do not pass meconium frequently after the birth, processed bilirubin that is sitting in the baby's bowel motions ready for excretion can be reabsorbed into the baby's system if they do not open their bowels frequently; Babies of mothers who required several hours of Syntocinon (or synthetic oxytocin) through a drip to induce or augment labour. Intravenous oxytocin can reduce the amount of salt in the baby's blood and increase the fragility of the haemoglobin orred blood cells. This can lead to more than the normal amount of red blood cells being broken down afterthe birth, increasing the levels bilirubin; Babies on certain medications, (or whose mothers were on these medications in the days before the birth). These include aspirin, heparin, Valium and some sulphur-based antibiotics. Some indicators are but not limited to: yellowing of eyes and face and may extend to the feet, baby may be lethargic ( newborns should be breastfeeding at least 8-10 times per day, eliminations (check breastfeeding guidelines for wet and poopy diapers per day), fever or vomiting. abnormally sleepy or floppy, refuses to feed or has less milk than normal, has dark urine or chalky colored stools. Contact your medical professional immediately as these signs may indicate that blood bilirubin levels are very high and hospital treatment to quickly lower them may be required.Ways to treat: exposing infants to indirect sunlight or phototherapy (which involves putting the baby under a fluorescent light) can help as it makes the bilirubin more soluble and therefore easier to flush out of the body. Breastfeeding management during treatment: usually breastfeeding does not need to be interrupted; increasing feeding should be encouraged as this stimulated bowel emptying. Delayed clamping may allow your baby to benefit from: an increase in blood volume of about 30 per cent, higher levels of red blood cells for the first day to two days, improved iron levels for up to six months. While allowing the baby all of theirblood volume may increase bilirubin levels they are not usually at a dangerous level and cutting the cord immediately does not guarantee their will be no jaundice. Why are we worried about jaundice? Jack Newman suggests that the idea that jaundice is bad is a standard based on formula-fed babies (who tend less often to be jaundiced). He suggests that rather than looking at the breast-fed baby and saying "why is that baby jaundiced?” we should look at the formula-fed baby and say "why isn't that baby jaundiced?" There are sound physiological reasons to argue for the benefits of elevated bilirubin, as it is an antioxidant, something thought to be fairly important as a baby moves from a relatively low O2 to a high O2 environment (but w/ functioning fetal hemoglobin). “I find it hard to get too excited about jaundice in a baby that's doing all the "right" things...nursing well, peeing and pooping and gaining. I think it's just a part of the normal physiological process of adjustment to extrauterine life (barring, of course, pathological exceptions like jaundice in the first 24 hours, lethargy, etc).” -Ronnie Falcao, LM MS

MERRY CHRISTMAS TO YOU, MARY CHRISTMAS

Merry Christmas to you, Mary Christmas. That’s what the former Mary Young will be hearing this holiday season, after she married

Brian Christmas recently.

‘It was meant to be,’ Mary Christmas told her local newspaper. ‘God has a sense of humour. What are the chances that it would ever happen?’ She has found, however, that she is not alone.

Mary Christmas has been working at Ancestry.com for three years and discovered there are as many as 100 other Mary Christmases in the United States. ‘The last name of Christmas has its origins in

Wales,’ she said, ‘It was given to people that were born on Christmas Day,’ she continued.

WHY SANTA CAN’T POSSIBLY BE A MAN:

Christmas is a big, organized, warm, fuzzy, nurturing social deal, and I have a tough time believing a guy could possibly pull it all off!

The vast majority of men don’t even think about selecting gifts until December 24.

He would have transportation problems because he would inevitably get lost up there in the snow and clouds and then refuse to stop and

ask for directions. Men can’t pack a bag.

Men would rather be dead than caught wearing red velvet.

Men would feel their masculinity is threatened...having to be seen with all those elves.

Men don’t answer their mail.

Men would refuse to allow their physique to be described even in jest as anything remotely resembling a “bowlful of jelly.”

Only a male Santa can ignore ‘fashion’ and wear the same suit for 500 years.

The Christmas Tree

In 16th-century Germany fir trees were decorated, both indoors and out, with apples, roses, gilded candies, and colored paper.

In the Middle Ages, a popular religious play depicted the story of Adam and Eve’s expulsion from the Garden of Eden.

A fir tree hung with apples was used to symbolize the Garden of Eden -- the Paradise Tree. The play ended with the prophecy of a

savior coming, and so was often performed during the Advent season.

One legend that has not been proved is that Martin Luther is responsible for the origin of the Christmas tree. This story says that one Christmas Eve, about the year 1500, he was walking

through the snow-covered woods and was struck by the beauty of the snow glistened trees. Their branches,

dusted with snow, shimmered in the moon light. When he got home, he set up a small fir tree and shared the story with hischildren. He decorated the Christmas tree with small candles,

which he lighted in honor of Christ’s birth.

A man went to his dentist because he has a strange feeling in his mouth. The dentist examines him and says, “That new upper plate I put

in for you six months ago is eroding. What have you been eating?”The man replies, “All I can think of is that about four months ago my

wife made some asparagus and put some stuff on it that was delicious...Hollandaise sauce. I loved it so much I now put it on everything - meat,

toast, fish, vegetables, everything.”“Well,” says the dentist, “That’s probably the problem. Hollandaise sauce

is made with lots of lemon juice, which is highly corrosive. It has eaten away your upper plate. I’ll make you a new plate,

and this time use chrome.”“Why chrome?” asks the patient.

To which the dentist replies, “It’s simple. Everyone knows that there’s no plate like chrome for the Hollandaise!”

“Doing my Christmas shopping early,” replied the

“How early were you doing this shopping?”

“Before the store opened,” countered the prisoner.

Aren’t the holidays all about giving and sharing love, giving a gift to somebody just because you feel like

giving and not expecting anything back? St Nicholas was also that kind of man. Much like the man whose

birthday we celebrate on this day. He gave and gave and gave without ever expecting us to return the favor, the

sacrifice.

Santa gives gifts all over the place. That’s all he does.

Maybe he gets an occasional cookie and a glass of milk, but Santa just gives and gives with no expectation of

return. I know it is very similar to what we are to do as imitators of Jesus.

So, this holiday season, you have an opportunity to be Santa, selflessly giving, looking for ways to offer service

to another person with nothing expected in return.

All the people in your life right now that you see on a regular basis - give them the gift of Santa. Show the love

that god has shown to you everyday.

You know what the best holiday gift you can give is. Giving the gift of you.

Acknowledge people. Thank them for the good service. If you go to Tim Horton’s every single morning, thank the person who made your coffee. Thank them for the

service they gave you.

When you go to the grocery store, thank the cashier, wish her a Merry Christmas - But thank them from the bottom of your heart and be the Santa Claus to them.

Santa is all about giving, so give people love.

Tip a little bit more in your favorite restaurant, give them a Christmas card, give them a candy cane. Be-

come their Santa. Show appreciation this time of year.

We all don’t do this on a regular basis. We don’t thank people enough for the wonderful service that they’ve

given us through the whole year. So do it now.

We all have the opportunity to show that appreciation to all the people this year who have made our life easier

- all the people that you don’t regularly acknowledge.

Be Santa: make someone’s Christmas magical. Make them feel amazed; make them feel

special, because that’s what the holidays are all about. The holidays are about unlocking the love that you have

inside for everybody that you share space with on a daily basis.

Unlock your inner Santa, the giving part that we are taught as people who believe in God and his son’s birth.

You’re going to feel really wonderful this holiday season.
