n attorney, college educator and certified flight

instructor has accepted the position of deputycommander for cadets at Deer Valley Composite

Squadron 302.

The appointment of 2ndLt. Richard Shortridge was

announced by Lt. Col. Chas Buchanan, squadroncommander. Lt. Shortridge succeeds 1st Lt. Casey

Young, who served in the position for 2½ years.“We’re excited to have an individual of Lt. Short-

ridge’s exceptional qualifications serving in this impor-tant capacity within the squadron,” Lt. Col. Buchanansays. “The cadets and the squadron will benefit tremen-

dously from his guidance of the program.”Lt. Shortridge, who as a youth had been a Civil Air

Patrol (CAP) cadet lieutenant colonel at the Sky Har-bor Cadet Squadron, joined Deer Valley CompositeSquadron 302 in June 2007 and became the squadron’slegal officer last year. His daughter, C/CMSgt. Jac-

queline Shortridge, also is a squadron member.“When my daughter joined, I knew I really wanted

He recalls nostalgi-cally CAP rented the Cessna 140 to cadets and seniors at the astro-nomical rate of $9 per hour, including fuel.

“In those days, there was still a major general-aviation presenceat Sky Harbor Airport,” he says. “We used to drill next to the flightline. During my time as a cadet, I attended two national activitiesincluding the International Air Cadet Exchange.”

Lt. Shortridge has had a certified flight instructor certificate for30 years plus a commercial-pilot certificate for gliders. He also is

certified ground instructor for advanced and instrument training.Since joining Deer Valley Composite Squadron 302, he has completed training as an airborne mis-sion scanner and is pursuing his qualification as a mission observer.

An attorney by training, Lt. Shortridge has served the past 12 years as department chair of Busi-ness & Information Technology at Glendale Community College. He also teaches business law at theW.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona Sate University (ASU) and has taught at Midwestern Uni-versity and Thunderbird, The Garvin School of International Management, both in Glendale.

Lt. Shortridge earned a Bachelor of Science de-grees in aeronautical industrial technology and eco-nomics, both from ASU, a Juris Doctor degree fromthe University of Tulsa in Oklahoma and a Master

of Science degree in taxation from Golden GateUniversity in California.

assistant to the cadet commander. Following are questions

and answers to assist squadron members and others in learning

more about this cable cadet leader:

Q: When did you join Civil Air Patrol (CAP) and the squadron?• Cadet Esgar: I joined CAP and the squadron in July 2006 while

going into my sophomore year in high school.

Q: What led you to join the organization?

• Just hearing about all the opportunities, especially the free flyingCAP had to offer made me want to be a part of the organization.

Q: What is your current position and future goal within the squad-

ron?• My current position is first sergeant, which I think is the best job

in the entire squadron. My future goal is to be the squadron’s ca-det commander. I know it's a stretch, but aim high, right?

Q: How has CAP helped you in your everyday life?• CAP has helped me in many areas of my life, including my officer position within my school's

theatre department, motivating my peers and overall just living a life with integrity.

Q: In which community do you live and where do you attend school?• I live in Peoria, just bordering on Glendale. I attend Mountain Ridge High School, home of the

Mountain Lions!

Q: Are you involved in any extracurricular activities at school?• I am involved in my school’s theatre program, which has included everything from designing

sets, acting on stage, building sets - including welding - and participating in our thespian pro-gram.

Q: What are your college/career ambitions and what one thing from CAP will help you to achieve

those goals?• I plan on attending Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott and studying aerospace

engineering. I believe CAP has given me the passion and basic knowledge to pursue this path.

Q: What advice do you have for new cadets?• I advise any new cadets to stick with the program. I understand sometimes it's not fun, or it gets

really tough, but just don't quit. Stick with it!

Q: Who in the program do you consider to have been the most instrumental in your advancement

in CAP and why?• I consider C/1st Lt. Robert Gassert (a former squadron cadet commander) to be the most instru-

mental person in my CAP career. He is the person who first got me into the program and helpedme so much along the way.
