    Special occasions require special attention to dress. Civil Air Patrolmembers are expected to dress appropriately at all official events. Looksharp, Maj. Ryan Lord advised. We want to represent the United StatesAir Force, the Civil Air Patrol, and ourselves as the professionals we are.

    Brian works as a Regional Sales Director for Qwest in the Wholesaledivision. His wife, Kimberly, is a corporate attorney. At present, theSmileys are busy with work, play, and the care of their two daughters,Katelynn, age 4 1/2, and Lauren, age 3. They have a son due in early July

    Asked what drew him to Civil Air Patrol, he replied, I have alwaysbeen interested in flight. The love of flight is the source of every boysdream. He attended an Open House in 2002 at Metro Airport. He hadpurchased an aircraft in 2002 and needed purpose. I discovered thatCivil Air Patrol meant more than punching holes in the sky, he said.Since that time, he has thrown his energies into Civil Air Patrol, servinwherever he is needed. For example, he recently designed the JeffcoSquadron Patch and assists the Public Affairs team.

    As COWG Director of Aerospace Education, he organized the firstColorado Wing Aerospace Education event at Platte Valley lastSeptember. COWG Aerospace Education Day is an opportunity forCAP to fulfill its internal and external program initiatives in one funevent, he said. Last year, there were a variety of activities for cadetand officer members alike. And, this event afforded the perfectopportunity for these members to interact with aviation enthusiastsfrom outside organizations.

    For example, he added, last year, we hosted Maj. General MikeEdwards,Adjutant General of the Colorado Air National Guard, aswell as educators from local colleges and schools, a state legislator, atelevision personality, and a pilot from the DEA who displayed hisspecialized aircraft. This year, he continued, we plan to have an airshow type environment with displays and interactive opportunities wiother agencies sharing similar interests to the Civil Air Patrol.Wewant to put an end to Civil Air Patrol being known as the best kept

    secret.On his every email, Smiley, encapsulates his personal philosophy with

    the quote, Lifes journey is not to arrive at the grave safely in a wellpreserved body but rather to skid in sideways totally worn out,shouting: YEE HAW, what ride!

    Capt. Brian Smiley, Director ofAerospace Education for the Colorado Wing,is serious about Aerospace Education. Infact, he attacks any job he undertakes withserious intent and focus.

    Born in Upstate New York, he attendedHartwick College in Oneonta, N.Y. andserved in the United States Air ForceReserves where he was stationed in SanAntonio and Phoenix. He earned his MBA atthe University of Phoenix.

    After visiting Colorado on a couple kayak-

    ing trips, Smiley moved here in 1997. Colo-rado, he says,had everything I wanted todo: kayaking, biking, skiing, triathlons, golf,and of course flying,

    Residing in the Morrison area, he isenamored with the fact that he lives withinten minutes of Class V whitewater, rightacross from a golf course and backing ongreat mountain biking trails.A lover of high adventure, Brian raced onthe U.S. Kayak Team in the late 1980s. I hadthe privilege to compete three times at theWorld Championship level, he said.

    This sport introduced him to world travel,as he has now paddled on five continents and

    has visited 30 different countries. Always theadventurer, he added, Id like to think Ivebeen on the road less traveled when visiting

    Five hundred people a year

    die in general aviation; eighty

    percent of those deaths are

    caused by pilot error in

    judgement, said Mark Grady,

    presenter at the AOPA

    conference, February 12.

    Speaking to a packed house

    at the Conference Center at the

    Ramada Plaza in Northglenn,

    the popular AOPA representative

    told the crowd of nearly 450, A

    pilot is as safe as he wants to be. Human nature

    often dictates poor decisions as pilots are anxious to

    return home. Some believe that mishaps are for the

    other guy. They wont happen to me, Grady

    quipped. Five pilot mistakes cause accidents, many

    of which are fatal. They are:

    1.Maneuvering Flight

    2. Descent/Approach

    3.Take Off and Climb

    4.Weather

    5. Fuel Depletion

    Pilots must be able to self

    evaluate, he said, We must

    practice safety for ourselves, our

    families, and for our aviation

    families. What you do reflects on

    all other general aviators in the

    public eye. He emphasized that pilots who attend

    safety seminars have fewer accidents. Awareness

    prevails.

    Maj .Bob Smithlikes to paint himself as a PennsylvaniaDutch farm boy. Actually his family farm is still in the family.Bob moved to Colorado in the 1970s when his father was hiredto work as an engineer. His alma mater, as a matter of fact, isBroomfield High School.

    Bobs private personality gets a break from the stresses of joband leadership in Civil Air Patrol when two or three times a yearhe heads for the desert to breathe the fresh air and contemplatethe beauty of a mountain top. Once in a while a rancher maydrive by on a dusty road to move cattle. he says. Otherwise hisquiet moments go undisturbed.

    Juggling his duties as a single dad, attending Regis University,where he is majoring in Technical Management, and running the

    squadron, Bob rarely has time for his passion for Ham radiooperations and his guitar.

    Urged by his colleagues to assume squadron leadership, Bobquips, It seems that Civil Air Patrol attracts different types ofpeople, and the ones I value most are the folks who show up withthe volunteer spirit and an honest desire to serve. Jeffco isblessed with an abundance of those special folks.Those selflessindividuals are my friends.

    Remembering the early birds of aerospace, Capt. Brian Smileyfacilitated the Platte Valley AerospaceEducation event in 2007 featuring old time aircraft, a nostalgic museum, cadets in drill, honored guests, fun,food, and good times.

    Dignitaries included Robert Mock of Metro State, Dr. Ben Millspaugh, author and speaker, PattiSampers State Director of C AP Foundation, State Representative Kent Lambert, and CAPLegislative Liaisons Col. Jack Buschmanand Col. Gary Toby. Special guests were the Jones couplewho were lost in the Comanche Wilderness last fall and rescued by Jeffco air crewCapt. Bruce Hertelendy,Lt. Col. Dick Sargent, and Capt. Sy Jenkins.

    1Lt. Linnand his team have recently made some significantupgrades to the computer infrastructure in the Squadron Office tofacilitate the use of the office as an Incident Command Post and tosupport training efforts. IT updates consist of the addition of theQwest DSL internet service and a wired network with a router behindthe DSL modem. Wired Networks, says Mike, are simple andreliable. Wireless service, while convenient, is more difficult to set upand is not guaranteed to work.

    Mike says, there is documentation,Jeffco Squadron Network UsersGuideplaced in the office which will also be put on the web pages toassist members in configuring their PCs to the network and theprinter.
