WELCOME TO WESLEY MEDICAL CENTER

THE BABY HOSPITAL

Wesley recently completed a $36 million renovation of its women's hospital, providing new moms and moms-to-be with upgraded facilities featuring the latest in comfort and technology. The Wesley Birth Care Suites is also the beneficiary of a $3 million renovation of its patient and labor rooms.

Please let us know if we can help you be more comfortable during your stay.

Wesley Medical Center has been bringing expert care to every birth experience since we first opened our doors. We became known as “The Baby Hospital" when we opened the area's first "Mother's Room" in 1912. Because of our decades of experience, award-winning staff and high-quality care, Wesley delivers more babies than any other hospital in a 13-state region. Whatever happens during your delivery, rest assured that the staff at Wesley has the knowledge to handle any situation.

The birth of a child is one of the most exciting events life has to offer. At Wesley, we'll do our best to follow your wishes about the manner in which you give birth. We want you to make your own decisions about pain management, birthing methods and family involvement. However, we realize access and privacy are important to new moms and will sometimes limit the number of visitors to allow greater focus on mother, baby and support staff. You and your baby will receive individual attention from our nurses and staff, who feel privileged to be a part of bringing your baby into the world.

ENVIRONMENT of CARE

SECURITY

Based on your individual pregnancy and birth plan, you and your physician will decide whether you give birth in Wesley Birth Care Suites or in Wesley's Women's Hospital.

Wesley Birth Care Suites is dedicated solely to childbirth. It is located across Murdock Street from the main hospital, and connected to the main hospital by a hallway. There are 20 birthing suites and two surgical sites. Each woman has an individual suite where labor, delivery and the rest of her stay all take place. Each suite includes a family room and a private bathroom in addition to the mother's room. Caregiver beds are provided in each suite for family and friends to stay overnight. The facility provides a playroom for young siblings and a comfortable lobby where additional family members can await your baby's arrival.

The Women's Hospital is designed similar to the rooms in the Wesley Birth Care Suites. The hospital birthing suites accommodate labor, delivery and immediate recovery. Afterward, mother and baby are moved to a private hospital room.

Both facilities provide the same expert medical services and family-centered care. They are designed and decorated for the convenience and enjoyment of you and your family. Either facility can provide various types of pain management, including epidural anesthetics, and is prepared for any complications that might arise, including the need for a cesarean section. You are welcome to tour both facilities by calling 316.962.6000.

Your baby's security is important to us, and we will assist you in taking steps to ensure your baby's safety. Our comprehensive security plan includes the use of cameras, electronic monitoring and the training of our staff in advanced security procedures.

All members of the Wesley birth care staff can be identified by pink photo identification badges. Armbands placed on you, your baby and a person of your choosing will identify your connection to your baby. Anyone who does not have a hospital identification badge or an armband will not be allowed to take your baby outside your room.

PRENATAL CARE

s

Prenatal care is important to having a safe delivery and a healthy baby. We encourage you to talk with your physician and make a birth plan, which is an outline of your wishes for labor and delivery. Choose a physician with whom you feel comfortable with as you prepare for childbirth. There are plenty of options, as nearly every physician who delivers babies in the Wichita area is a member of Wesley's medical staff.

If concerns about your pregnancy arise, a specialized physician called a maternal-fetal medicine specialist, or perinatologist, can provide the advanced testing and care to help you have a positive outcome. If you need to be hospitalized at any point during pregnancy, a special unit in Wesley's women's hospital is devoted to inpatient care of pregnant women.

Knowing about the birth process and parenting will help you assume your new role with greater ease, comfort and joy. Wesley offers one of the most comprehensive programs of low-cost childbirth and parenting classes in the region. You can sign up for classes one at a time or enroll in a package of classes. BIRTHYour doctor will explain the signs of labor so you will know when to go to the hospital. Be prepared by having your overnight bag ready, arranging for the care of your other children and planning transportation.

If you plan to give birth at the Wesley Birth Care Suites, park in the adjacent parking lot and check in at the reception desk. If you plan to deliver at Wesley's Women's Hospital, park in the parking garage at Hillside and Murdock. The green level has spaces close to the hospital entrance that are reserved for women in labor. Take the first elevator to the second floor and go to the nurses' station. At either facility, you may have your driver drop you off at the door and use the telephone at the entrance to request a wheelchair.

Your nurse will help you get settled into your room and, along with your doctor, begin following your birth plan. Your nurse is trained to help you with various pain management methods, such as massage, breathing techniques, positioning, walking or soaking in a warm tub. Medications are also available for pain management, depending on your wishes. As labor progresses, you may choose to change your birth plan. If complications arise, our staff is prepared for any possibility.

During your labor and subsequent stay, you may want the support of a Wesley chaplain or a spiritual leader of your choice. Simply let your nurse know that you would like a chaplain to come to your room. Our chaplains provide support for people of all faiths and beliefs, and they are happy to contact a particular religious leader if you wish. Friends and family may want to visit the Wesley Memorial Chapel, which offers a traditional, soothing environment for prayer and meditation.

WELCOME YOUR BABY WITH A HUG

BREASTFEEDING

PHOTOS TO LAST A LIFETIME You and your family are welcome to take photos or videos anytime throughout hospitalization, except at birth and during any medical procedures.

Wesley contracts with a professional baby photo company that will take a security photo and other photos of your baby at your request. The photos will be placed on a secure website linked from Wesley's home page, so your friends and family can see your new addition. For more information, visit wesleymc.com and review the Childbirth page under Women's Care services.

Wesley is a designated "Baby-Friendly" hospital through Baby-Friendly, USA. The designation represents Wesley's commitment to encourage practices that support successful breastfeeding, including skin-to-skin contact between mothers and newborns, infants rooming in with mothers, early initiation of breastfeeding and breastfeeding education. All of these encourage bonding and improve the newborn's ability to breastfeed.

After giving birth, your nurse will help you get started with breastfeeding and assist you with any problems that might arise. Our certified breastfeeding specialists will visit you and be available to help as needed. While we highly recommend breastfeeding, we will assist you with whatever healthy feeding method you choose for your baby.

The Wesley Care Breastfeeding Clinic is a free walk-in clinic to women whose babies were born at Wesley. Feel free to stop by between 1-3 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information about breastfeeding or the clinic, call 316.962.MILK (6455).

Wesley's Donor Milk Program provides moms an opportunity to help premature infants in Kansas by donating breast milk. Moms who have healthy babies can donate their excess breast milk, which is then provided to premature infants to give them the nutrition they need for proper growth and development. Wesley's partnership with Prolacta Bioscience provides human milk to fragile newborns, while also allowing moms who have breast milk to donate to support premature babies in the Kansas community and Wesley's NICU. For more information, please visit wesley.prolacta.com.

In the first few minutes after your baby is born, you will hold your child in your arms for the first time. Nothing compares to this joyous moment of relief and celebration. This is also the time to comfort your baby with the touch of your warm body as your baby adjusts to the world outside your womb. Holding your baby skin-to-skin for about an hour after birth will help keep your baby calm and pace his or her heart rate and breathing.

There will be time to share your excitement with family and friends as you are ready. Please remember it is important for you and your baby to get rest. If you wish, we can put a sign on your door to politely ask visitors to check at the nurses' station. You may also have your room phone turned off. Just let us know.

During your stay at Wesley, our nurses will help you learn how to care for your baby and will answer any questions you may have. We want you to feel comfortable and prepared when you leave the hospital for home.

Wesley is recognized as Kansas' leading hospital for newborns who are premature or have special needs. We hope that your birth will go as planned. However, if complications occur, you have the assurance that Wesley's neonatal intensive care unit is available. The NICU staff includes physicians, nurses, respiratory therapists and other specialized healthcare professionals who are experienced in the care of newborns with special needs.

Wesley also has a neonatal special care unit for babies whose needs are not as critical as those in the intensive care unit. This unit has rooms, when available, where you may stay overnight with your baby.

Our staff will help you learn to care for any of your baby's special needs before you take your baby home. For parents of infants who are in the NICU, Wesley provides support from families who have experienced similar circumstances. Our outpatient clinic includes a developmental pediatrician and staff who can help with your child's progress and care after you leave the hospital. Should it be necessary, you and your baby will have the medical care and support needed to deal with any challenges.

Wesley has a women's nurse navigator who specializes in helping you through challenges,

complications or concerns with your pregnancy. She is available before, during and after

hospitalization. Along with your doctor, she can help you deal with issues such as personal

illness to high-risk pregnancy. Our nurse navigator can connect you with internal and

community resources that might be helpful. Talk to your doctor to learn more.
