Taps from the Gavel – Peter German, President ([email protected])

Good day everyone. I think it is time for club members to think about ways to recruit new members.

I believe that a small effort on the part of each of us to bring guests to meetings could be very

helpful. We might even hold a special evening or afternoon event to welcome guests, bring extra

munchies and tell stories of rockhounding adventures we have had. Please send your ideas to me, if

you can't make it to our meetings. I hope everyone able will attend the next meeting. I have not seen

some members for a while. And I hope this message finds you all in good to fair health. If anyone has

hurt feelings regarding something another member may have said, and this keeps you from attending

DELVERS meetings, please remember that we are more like a family than a club. As the president of the

DELVERS, I want to remind you that all of our members are important. You are missed, and your input

and ideas are needed to help the DELVERS stay alive and grow.

Minutes of the February 9th General Meeting – Teresa Taylor & A. Hoekstra

Member displays included: chalcopyrite, sphalerite, and galena specimens from the Tri-state lead and zinc

Mining District brought by Dale Harwood; cabochons made by Chuck Pierce from Mexican Laguna agate - heart

shaped, with a crystal pocket and an added ruby; South Dakota “Bubble Gum” Prairie agates, and a pyrite on

sphalerite with rhodochrosite specimen from the Eagle Mine (Colorado) bought by Judy and Marvin Belcher at

Quartzite, AZ; pearl and alexandrite earrings, a “spinner” ring, and a necklace with meteorite, amethysts,

moonstone and quartz crafted by Teresa Taylor; a heart shaped pendant of palm root, and a necklace of jade

beads with pendant of “Chinese Writing Stone” (porphyry of feldspar phenocrysts in basalt) shared by Angie

Harwood. We then watched two episodes from the DVD video “The Wonderful World of Agates Symposium”.

Fifteen members were present, including two new members, Karen Ellis and Kathy Sok.

Minutes of the February 9th Board Meeting – Teresa Taylor & A. Hoekstra

Five board members present; Nancy Bird and Glenn Parrish absent. Guynell Miller, Dale Harwood and Andrew

Hoekstra audited and approved the club’s 2017 books (financial records are available for members to review).

President Pete German proposed a membership drive. Andrew Hoekstra suggested a club display at the Downey

City Library. Andrew mentioned that the Cerritos College Geology Department is inviting the Delvers to visit and

“collect” from their surplus rocks. There are several field trips on February 17th: some Delvers will be going to

Lavic Siding that day, and Andrew is co-leading a trip for the SoCal Paleontological Society. If the club is to have

a show this year, we need to determine the venue soon.

Membership dues: $15 individual, $25 couple/family at same address. Please pay at the meeting or mail to:

Cabs with Curves – by Bob Rush

From the Mother Lode Mineral Society’s Ghost Sheet , Vol. 68, # 9, September 2016

Lately I have been working on incorporating more inside curves in my cabs. I want to have the advanced lapidary students in the lapidary courses at Camp Paradise to include inside curves in their cab. I also intend to have my students at MJC do the same thing.

The techniques in making them include the standard cabbing steps as well as grinding the inside curves with a 1" silicon carbide mizzy wheel. I sand the curves on an 8" expando wheel with a very well worn 220 grit silicon carbide belt. I slide the belt about 1/4" over the edge of the wheel and use the flexing edge to reach into the curve. The polishing is done with a 1/2" diameter wood wheel made from a dowel and coated with moist Rapid Polish.

The sample cabs are made from Piranha Agate and the large cab is about 5" tall.

Editor’s Note: mizzy wheels are heatless or heat-resistant hard, square-edged wheels used for deburring and finishing. Loose, coarse construction makes the grinding process cool. They are typically made of aluminum oxide or silicon carbide and claimed to be suitable for porcelain, metals and plastic.

Lapidary Shop at the Torrance Senior Center

The Bartlett Senior Center (at 1318 Cravens Ave, Torrance; phone 310-320-5918) lapidary shop is now

open each Monday and Thursday from 9:30-12:30 and (usually) first and third Saturday’s noon-3:30.

Dave Lundstedt (310-714-7035) oversees the shop on Mondays and Thursdays and John Pepper (310-684-

5479) on Saturdays. There is a modest per day fee. The shop has diamond saws and grinders. Bring your

own eye-protection. You can bring your own rock or use rough and slabs available at the shop.
