It’s springtime in Denmark, the

temperature reached 20° Easter Sunday.

Down under we’re of course heading

towards winter, I’m loving the cool nights; soon it’ll be time to get my lovely Danish feather doona out of hiding. With the

change in the light adding new textures and shadows, you may also be inspired to

paint like Lars Vester, featured on the front

page and inside the newsletter. I’m tempted to grab an easel and oil paints

myself and enjoy sitting in the City Botanic Gardens for a couple of hours in the winter sun! Next month I’m looking forward to

seeing the play ‘Kærestebreve’ – the show in Brisbane is a result of our cooperation

with DACE (Danish Art & Cultural Exchange) with financial support from the Dannebrog Foundation in Australia and the

Jorck Foundation in Denmark. The performance is in Danish by Danish actors

– make sure you make the most of this rare opportunity to enjoy live theatre in Danish in Brisbane. The actors will be in

Brisbane for four days and if you would like to take them sight-seeing or invite them

for a meal, let me know.

Dansk Legegruppe

Vores danske legegruppe mødes hver fredag i Heimdals lokaler fra 9.30 til kl 11.30.

Aldersgruppen er fra 0 til 5 år, søskende til yngre børn er selvfølgelig velkommen i ferierne.

Vi starter altid med formiddagskaffe og hjemmebagte boller, efterfølgende varierer

aktiviteterne med fri leg, hoppeborg, tegning og sanglege mv. Vi skiftes til at medbringe boller og tilbehør.

Vi betaler $2 hver gang per familie, medlemskab af Playgroup Queensland og den danske klub Heimdal er en betingelse.

The passing of

Visti the Viking

Visti the Viking (Skaanvad) who has been

involved in Viking re-enactment for over 20

years, departed for Valhalla and the higher

battlegrounds on the 19th of February 2014.

Visti was well-known for his amber and Viking

jewellery trading and for his unique mead

making. He started the Viking re-enactment

group Saga Vikings in 1995 and in 2012, he

donated his Viking ship, Fafnir, which he had built by hand using traditional

Viking tools and methods, to the Abbey for the enjoyment of all, at the annual

Abbey Medieval Festivals.

Visti truly believed he was a reincarnated

Viking from 1000 years ago. He grew up and

played on Lindholm Hoje as a child, before

the area was excavated in 1952, revealing the

huge Viking burial site that can be seen today.

In true Viking style

and because it has

his deepest wish,

Visti was cremated

with a wooden

Viking ship,

wearing his full Viking outfit of tunic, trousers,

jewellery, Viking leather shoes and fur cloak. In

the graveyard of his hometown in Denmark, a

runestone stands in his honour, complete with a

bronze Viking longship on top.

Visti the Viking will be dearly missed.

About Lars Vester Lars Vester is a Danish born artist, working predominantly in the medium of oil painting. Lars’ artistic career took off from a very early age. He started painting in oils from the age of 10, and at the age of 12 he won his first major art prize – A European competition for youth, titled ‘Man and Space – Past, Present and Future’, arranged by European Space Agency (ESA), in conjunction with NASA in the United States. His winning piece took home the main prize, a trip to The USA and a visit to Cape Kennedy Space Centre in Florida. Lars had his first solo exhibition in his hometown Grenaa in Denmark at the age of 16, and upon graduating from the Aarhus Art Academy in Denmark, he completed his studies via an apprenticeship of Art Direction, Graphic Design and illustration at The Masters Group in Århus. In 1991 he followed his dreams and migrated to Sydney, where he began his career as an Art Director. He continued working as an Art Director (and later Creative Director) for many years in some of Australia’s largest ad agencies, including Clemenger BBDO Melbourne, GPY&R and McCann-Erickson in Brisbane. He also continued his painting part time, before finally giving up his day job to become a full time artist. Lars is now living and working in Brisbane with his wife Wen, dedicating all of his time to his art. His unique approach to painting urban landscape and still life sees ordinary subjects transform into

magical interpretations. With a blend of light and texture, he captures those special moments in time that are often overlooked. While at first glance, Lars’ artistic style appears to fit into the category of realism, his work incorporates a fine balance between the real and the abstract, creating atmospheric impressions of illumination and depth around his subjects. Lars has had a number of exhibitions in both Europe and Australia, including various solo and group exhibitions. His work is represented in various private and corporate collections, including Her Excellency Ms Penelope Wensley AC, Governor of Queensland, the Joint Association of Danish Consumer Cooperatives and the H.C. Ørsted Institute in Copenhagen. Some of his most recent achievements include a ‘Highly Commended’ at the Lethbridge 10000 Art Award, and a finalist in the Clayton Utz Art Award. Artist Statement As an artist, I’m fascinated by the way nature can bring ordinary subjects to life by light and weather– as if it’s trying to tell us a story. In a sense, I see my role to be more of a storyteller, speaking on behalf of nature, than merely a painter. Through my work, I try to capture those ‘You just had to be there’ moments that Mother Nature sometimes create, and aim to connect viewers to the everyday subjects around us that we often overlook. I am forever chasing that magical light that so rarely presents itself, and when it does, usually only last for a very short period. When I eventually find it, it forms the basis for a new piece of work. I prefer to work in a relatively loose style, painting what I feel rather than what I see. I seek to create a harmonious marriage between illusion and reality, by infusing my work with a sense of mystery and intrigue, creating atmosphere and depth through the use of light and dramatic textures. My latest series of work explores the character, light and texture found in and around the area of New Farm.

Copenhagen: Getting ready for the

The Grand Final of the 2014 Eurovision Song Contest will take place at the B&W-Hallerne in Copenhagen (see photo below)

Johnny Logan won the Eurovision Song Contest three times. In 1980 and 1987 he represented Ireland as performer and won both times, in 1992 he wrote

Linda Martin's winning entry Why Me Poland made the most impressive debute in 1994, when Edyta Gorniak came

2nd with To Nie Ja, closely followed by Serbia's victory in 2007. Although Serbia & Montenegro was represented twice before, it was the first time that Serbia

took part as an independent country Norway could be found at the bottom of the list as many as ten times! The

unfortunates came last in 1963, 1969, 1974, 1976, 1978, 1981, 1990, 1997, 2001 and 2004. Nevertheless, they also won thrice (in 1985, 1995 and 2009)

Ireland has won 7 times, Luxembourg, France, Sweden and the United Kingdom

5 times. In 2001, the largest audience ever attended the Eurovision Song Contest.

Ipswich Festival 2014

Everyone loves a parade! Enjoy the dazzling sights and sounds of this unique festival event. The parade combines a spectacular line up of marching bands, street performers, horses, classic cars, local businesses, schools, festival characters and dancers.

OPERA ACOUSTICS FRIDAY 9 MAY 2014 6 PM

Funds from ticket sales will go toward the restoration of the church organ. Installed in 1860, one year after the church opened for worship, the JW Walker organ (of Soho London), was the first pipe organ to be installed in a Queensland church. The organ is still in use but is in need of a complete rebuild to restore it to its full function. Once the organ rebuild is completed, the pipe organ in St Paul's Anglican Church will be used not only for worship but also as a public facility that will open up new and exciting opportunities for the development of musical participation and culture in the city of Ipswich, for concerts, recitals and organ scholars.

GLOBAL FIESTA SATURDAY 10 MAY 2014 11 AM-5 PM Come and celebrate the many cultures that enrich our community at this family event. Explore workshops and demonstrations, experience arts and craft activities, and enjoy music and dance. A spectacular fusion of multicultural celebrations.

Project New Kitchen

Well, have a look at the photos in the April newsletter and see if you can detect the difference!

After we had cleared and established the new area for the kitchen, Rene Przybylak,

our nominated kitchen module provider, measured up, went away, worked hard and

delivered very quickly.

A very impressive effort by Alan and Rene saw the new kitchen installed in about 6 hours!

Fantastic effort - many thanks to both.

On the very same day, we had the company installing the stainless steel bench tops

take final measurements for installation just 4 days later.

Meanwhile, Simon Johansen’s company, zctechnical, installed the flue for the rangehood for our cooktop through the roof – the unit extracts 850 cubic meters an

hour, so hold on to your hat if in the kitchen.

Alan sourced, cut to size and installed the anodized aluminium backsplash and voilà –

that part of the kitchen renovation was complete – almost – still missing a few details but we are nearly there.

New ceiling lights were also installed – LED lights, of course – and it doesn’t look too

bad

Stage 2 commences 22 April when the breakfast bar and fridge areas will be cleared, so there is still a bit more dust to come. We’ll strive to complete for our next Café

Danmark on 23 May.

Kitchen update The project is progressing well with Alan, Henning and Søren putting

in many hours. To date, the oven, mobile fridge, rangehood and mobile cupboard

have been purchased. Next will be a new dishwasher (the old one suddenly stopped

last week and couldn’t be revived – technician on his way). Looking forward to

moving pots and pans, bowls and plates into the new cupboards and getting them

tagged, feeling a little lost at the moment.

Scandinavian Festival 2014 The new festival date is Sunday 14 September 2014

– work is already in progress. We have applied for a separate association registration for the festival. Black & White Cabs is sponsoring the festival with 20 advertising

panels on taxicabs – fantastic.

Membership Have decided not to pursue the nine unpaid memberships further.

Events April’s Smorgasbord was a popular event and with no April Café Danmark, the

committee is looking forward to a break before ‘Kærestebreve’. Skt Hans bonfire with Vikings confirmed to go ahead.

skildpadder’.
