YEAR 7 EXCURSION By all reports Year 7 had a fantastic time on their excursion to Adanac last week. This excursion gave them the opportunity to bond as a group and presented the students with a number of challenges across the three days. A big thank you goes to Mr Lethbridge for all of his organisation and to Ms Shanahan, Mr Carey, Mrs Jenkins, Mrs Callanan, Mrs Barker and Mrs Robinson for giving up time with their families to provide this wonderful opportunity for the students. EXTENDED STAFF MEETING On Monday the staff of Deniliquin High School was involved in a professional learning afternoon and evening. Staff were shown how to access and use Google Apps and Google Docs with a focus on the Google Classroom, they had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the software and its uses. The staff then spent time looking at the new school plan and how we can provide the best learning opportunities for all of our students. This is the first of four sessions which are in lieu of the last two days of the year. It was decided to run these sessions in order for staff to have access to training at the time that they need it rather than waiting until the last two days of the year. As a result of this staff will finish the year on Wednesday 19 th December, the same day as students. Last year I published our new school vision, this vision underpins all that we do in the school and it has played an important role in the formation of our school plan. Our vision for the next three years is: At Deniliquin High School learning is optimised through student engagement and explicit modelling of skills and expectations. This is supported by the promotion of positive and respectful relationships across the school community and through systematic and supportive processes. Through a consistent approach by all staff an environment of high expectations supports students to fulfil their potential. SIGN FROM CLASS OF 1964 TO 1969 Last week saw the installation of a revamped sign onto the end of the Hospitality Block facing towards the corner of Harfleur and Wellington Streets. This sign was presented to the Deniliquin High School by the class of 1964-1969 and is a fantastic addition to the school. Thank you to the class of 1964-1969 for their ongoing support of Deniliquin High School. ENGLISH NEWS Year 9 have been exploring Protest Poetry and Song this term. They have been looking at texts on a variety of significant issues including asylum seekers, Indigenous Australians, women’s rights, gay rights, gun laws and racial rights, spanning across the past century. Students in 9Red have been writing their own protest songs on issues they feel are significant.

An evil crow stalks the fields, gorging food for its pleasure. Whatever it wants is presented to him, served on a silver platter. He stalks the fields standing tall, towering over the many. For that is the way of life on the field, favouring those with the penny.

And the fields as plentiful as they may be, endless crops stretching out to the sea. Crowds of hunger plead and plead, but nothing is given, not even a seed. For an evil crow stalks those fields, towering over the many. And no matter what happens to those on his field, he'll always favour the one with the penny.

They live their lives with no food nor pleasure, their bodies so thin, unable to measure. Not a single bird flocks in the sky, their corner of living, hidden and shy. And the developments on the other side, is all for nought if the rest of us die. For an evil crow stalks my fields, leaving nothing for me but a lie.

Food is rare, rarer then rain, and for some it is merely a dream. To live off nothing but crumbs and scraps is a trait that is too often seen. But for some it is nothing, they take it for granted. And before long they eat more, than what has been planted.

Bayden Thompson

Humanity in the 21st Century This is what life is now. Endless enquiries. Endless reassuring. Am I worthy? Am I valuable? Am I desirable? But are any of these questions valid? Are any of the answers genuine? Does any of it really matter? No. Because what we are, isn’t us anymore. Over time, the questions have changed.

The answers have changed. The world around us has changed. But we have stayed the same. Have I become worthy?

Have I become valuable? Have I become desirable? Again, the response is devoid of any meaning, Again, the answer is always the same. Not yet. Because there is eternally more we can do, There are everlasting imperfections to be perfected, Everlasting creases to be ironed, Everlasting skin to be tucked. So we are pumped with foreign agents. Inserted with harsh chemicals. Injected with plastic. Cut and folded into living dolls. We are created, We are mutated, We are fake. Because that’s all life really is, Chicanery and deceit. We talk about sticking it the man, But then why are we still risking everything to stay sought-after? To stay current. Our humanity is dissipating because of statistical evidence. Natural pulchritude, fabricated with needles, Congenital beauty becomes distorted, Because that’s what makes us appealing, Artificial beauty. Look out girls, Today she is serving injectable realness. Unprocessed exquisiteness, With just a touch of fraudulence. This sort of stuff is statistically justified. It works for the rest of the population, Why would it not for me? And that’s how it starts. We unknowingly become test subjects. Experimented with, Just to show to the rest of the world that the tabloids are right, That the press is right. Because that’s all we are; Evidence to support a hypothesis. Whether it be through reconstructive surgery, Or a mask of cosmetics. We all need to be fixed. We get scorned for exposing our natural selves, We get scorned for covering it up,

We get scorned for not being who they want us to be. Yet, they still act like we have a choice.

SCIENCE NEWS YEAR 11 We have begun the implementation of the National Curriculum in Stage 6 Science. We have two Biolo-gy classes, and one each of Chemistry, Physics and Investigating Science. Staff have embraced these new courses with enthusiasm and students are en-joying the course work. In Biology we have students beginning their Depth Study which is independent research involving de-signing and conducting investigations on their choice of enzyme. Whilst the task seems daunting, staff are looking forward to assisting them in this challenge.

YEAR 7 Most Year 7 classes have been learning about separat-ing mixtures and all of the different techniques that can be used. Students are participating with great enthusi-asm in the practical component of Science and improv-ing their skills in the laboratory. 7 Blue successfully separated copper sulfate and water using distillation. 7 Blue and 7 Orange were very competitive with each other in growing copper sulfate crystals in the last few weeks. I am pretty sure 7 blue had some of the best shaped crystal but Miss Burton believes it was 7 Orange. Mrs Hindriks Head Teacher, Science

HARMONY DAY Deniliquin High School was treated to a range of activities on Harmony Day to recognise the importance of inclusivity of all people in our community regardless of their cultural, religious or sexual orientation. Our fabulous guest speakers Judith McGill (child, youth and family worker - Intereach) and Sarah Parsons presented a positive message on the wonderful success of the inaugural Hay Mardi Gras, which hit the national news on 24

th March. Their

messages of acceptance and pride in being who you are were well received and students displayed an excellent degree of respect to the presenters. Students in years 11 and 12 English classes watched a thought provoking episode of Insight, “I’m Not Racist But... “ to help them gain a deeper understanding of the impact of racism on cultural groups in the wider community. Through this we hope to equip our older students with an informed voice to stand up against and challenge behaviours that harm the wellbeing of OTHERS. Students were encouraged to wear an orange article of clothing; they painted their nails orange and were adorned with glittering stars and hearts to show their support. Students who wrote a kind message were rewarded with a free sausage sizzle. A fantastic day was had by all. Thank you to everyone who participated in this important day, where the overarching message of kindness was shared.

CAREERS NEWS WHITE CARD Students who put their names down for the White Card training days in Term Two need to make sure they have a note from the Careers Office. The training will be provided by Mr Bradley in the library Connected Classroom. Students have been advised that they will be required to attend a full day starting at 8am. This is a part of the mandatory requirement set by Work Cover; students MUST be in attendance for six (6) hours (breaks not included). If students live out of town, they will have to make arrangements to be at school before the bus run. The course will finish on time for students to catch buses home. The money for the course must be paid prior to commencement of the course and before the end of Term One. Please contact Ms Sinha if you have any issues with any of these requirements.

MY CAREER MATCH Students in Year 10 Careers have been working on with the My Career Match program, which the school generously subscribes to. As part of the program, students complete and online profile test which then analyses their personality type. Based on their personality type the program produces a report that outlines the sorts of endeavours best suited for the student. We have been working on these reports for the past weeks in Careers classes and on completion students will be bringing their reports home. We encourage parents to discuss the reports and ideas with their students and look succeeding at some of the suggested careers. In addition to the hard copy, students have also been sent an electronic version to their school email address which they can access outside of school. There are some fantastic links to explore and we strongly encourage you all to utilise this tool. WORK EXPERIENCE – YEAR 10 Students are starting to trickle in with ideas for work experience, which is fantastic to see. We want to remind students and parents that work experience is a compulsory component of our Year 10 Careers program as it provides a fantastic opportunity for any student to get some first-hand, on-the-job experience. Please discuss options with your student and perhaps refer to the abovementioned report for ideas of areas to pursue. We will be starting to fill out work experience forms in the following weeks and ideally it would be great if students have had preliminary discussions with employers. Remember, with limited opportunities in our generous community it is a case of first in best dressed, also utilise your contacts! ADF GAP YEAR – YEAR 12 A Gap Year in the Australian Defence Force is not only a chance to experience what a career in the Navy, Army or Air Force could be like, but also to have a year full of adventure, new friends, new skills, leadership, and travel. An ADF Gap Year is a truly unique opportunity for you to grow and figure out what next step you’ll take in life. Applications are still open and will be closing at the end of this month.

YEAR 8 MATHS FIELD DAY On the 15

th March, all Year 8 students headed to

the pool for a day of outdoor mathematical activities. The students rotated through six activities during the day. The activities involved problem solving, time and estimation, an underwater swim, pool volume, averages and speed and heart beat. The Field Day is part of our Making Maths Real Program and is designed to show students the practical applications of the Maths they are learning in the classroom. The weather was fine and warm and a great day was had by all. Thank you to the Maths staff and aides who ran the activities on the day.

TAS NEWS YEAR 9 ENGINEERING Year 9 Engineering have finalised their Rubber Band Car Assessment Task. The constraints of the task were that they had to pop a balloon at the end of the bench and a race to see whose design could take them the furthest. Well done Year 9 on such unique designs!
