First Year Science

Biology is the study of life

What is Biology?

Organism

Organism: another word for a living thing

Plants Fish Insects Humans

Bacteria & Viruses

Animals Fungus

How do we know something is living? Characteristics of living things:

1. Nutrition 3. Excretion

4. Growth

2. Respiration

5. Reproduction 6. Movement

7. Response

Nutrition

Nutrition: the way an organism gets its food

Respiration

Respiration: the release of energy from food

Cells

Excretion

Excretion: the removal of waste from the body

Examples of waste: • Carbon Dioxide • Sweat • Urea

Reproduction

Reproduction: the formation of new organisms

Response Response: the ability of an organism to gather information and respond to it

A way to remember…..

1. Nutrition

2. Respiration

3. Excretion

4. Growth

5. Reproduction

6. Movement

7. Response

Difference between animals & plants

Differ mainly in 3 ways

Movement

Food

Cell walls

Difference between animals & plants

ANIMALS PLANTS

Can move from place to place

Can’t move from place to place • Can move parts of itself

very slowly

Can’t make own food • Get food by eating

Make their own food (photosynthesis)

No cell wall Cell wall

Invertebrates and vertebrates

• Animals can be divided into groups called Vertebrates and Invertebrates

Invertebrates: animals that have no backbone

Vertebrates: animals that have a backbone

Vertebrate or invertebrate??? Snail

Frog

Spider

Cat

Shark

Earthworm

Snake

Octopus

Simple Key: how it works

• Page 6 in your book

IDENTIFY

Key: a set of questions to help identify an unknown object

Activity: OB39

• Title: To investigate living things in their environment

Rules for experiment work

1. Do not pick, collect or damage any living thing in the area

2. Listen to teacher

3. Enjoy it!

What to do

1. Visit an area in school

2. Look for as many living things as we can

3. Use information to classify what you find as – Living or non-living

– Plant or animal

– Vertebrate or invertebrate

4. Use picture keys to help identify

5. Ask teacher for help if you need (after trying yourself first)

Example of what to do….

• If unsure….

– Make a sketch, take notes

– Ask teacher for help

Organism Living? Plant Animal Vertebrate Invertebrate Notes

Worm Yes

Leaf on ground

No

What we need

• Clipboard

• Worksheet hand-outs

• Picture keys

• Pencil

• Eraser

• Suitable clothing and shoes

Writing up an experiment

1. TITLE & DATE

2. EQUIPMENT

3. METHOD

4. RESULTS

5. CONCLUSION

• Date experiment was written up 6. SIGN & DATE

• Name of experiment & date done

• List of materials

• What you did IN YOUR OWN WORDS

• What you found (in a TABLE on graph page)

• What you learned (relate back to title)
