As DPCR students count down their remaining days of this school year, many plans are in the works that will bring significant changes when they return for
their sophomore year in August.
Building Changes A number of building renovations are planned this summer to make room for the additional students from the Class of 2016. The Student Resource Center in the gym building will be subdivided into two classrooms and a folding panel wall will be added to separate the cafeteria and the gym to create more flexible use of these spaces.
Curriculum Changes The 2012-13 school day will be divided into eight class periods. New classes for all sophomores will include Spanish, Physical Education, Geometry, American Literature, Religion II, American History, and Biology. Two lunch periods are planned to accommodate the increased number of students. Several new teachers have been hired and will be introduced at the start of the school year. A number of students have been accepted into the new Honors Program which includes math-science and English-history blocks.
Dress Code Changes The new dress code, announced in March, will be fully enforced from day one of the new school year. Within this newsletter please find an order form for the required shirts, sweaters and vests with the DPCR logo.

New Faces, Spaces and Classes Will Join DPCR in August
June 15 is Registration Deadline for Sophomores
Please remember that you must
have your student’s sophomore
registration forms into the
school office by June 15. If you
have any questions, please call
the office at 861-0600.
Students Have Assigned Reading Over Summer Break
Over summer break, all current DPCR students are required to
read the “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian” by
young adult author Sherman Alexie. This novel is a National
Book Award winner and is the first they will study in their
sophomore American Literature class. The students will have
an assignment related to this due on their first day of classes,
August 27. They’ll receive information on how to get a copy of
the book and the assignment before the last day of school.
JUNE

Dear Families,
Thanks to all of you for your continued
support and commit-ment to DePaul Cristo Rey High School. We were blessed this month to have wonderful weather for the “Cookout in the Courtyard Celebra-tion” which also served as the kickoff to our Bruin Parents Club. This event was also the first time we celebrated with both the families of the Class of 2015 and the Class of 2016. I am excited to say that we had fabulous representation from both classes – the community of DPCR is growing quite nicely.
As we look forward to the future of DePaul Cristo Rey, we will most likely begin next school year with double the number of our current students. This is an exciting time as I am able to see the growth of not only the student body, but also the individual growth within each student. When I say growth I am referring to not only the obvious physical growth spurts that have occurred throughout the year, but also the academic and spiritual growth in many of our students that I have witnessed firsthand.
As DePaul Cristo Rey continues to grow we need you to continue to spread the word about the great things happening here. We will accept a limited number of transfer students into the Class of 2015 and still have spots open in the Class of 2016. So if you know of a family that is interested, please don’t hesitate to share my name and contact information: [email protected] or 513-861-0600 ext. 312. The last opportunity for prospective students to shadow at DPCR is the week of May 23.
With best wishes for a relaxing summer,
– Keianna Matthews, Director of Enrollment and Dean of Student Development

Ohio Graduation Tests Ahead for SophomoresParents have lately asked questions
about the Ohio Graduation Tests all
sophomores statewide will take in spring
2013. Read on for Principal Andrew
Farfsing’s answers to the two most
common OGT questions.
How will DPCR prepare students for the OGTs coming next year? There will be constant and steady test
preparation built into the core courses
in next year’s curriculum. These include
the OGT content areas of English, Math, Science and Social Studies. In addition, test
preparation will be specifically addressed during Credo classes.
Is there anything students can do this summer to help prepare for the OGTs? Reading, any and all forms of literature, is the best summer preparation for students. In
addition to the assigned class book, “The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian,”
students can and should read other books, magazines and newspapers. All forms of
reading increase vocabulary, speed and understanding.
For math, students can continue to access the Kahn Academy math Web site they have
used in their Algebra class this year and there are other Web sites that offer OGT math
exercises.
More information will be shared about OGTs throughout next school year.
Students Serving and Learning over the Summer
DPCR students will participate in two significant summer learning experiences.
Aaron Carter, Ruvarashe Chimusoro,
Kourtnie Duggins, Tareek Foster,
Christina Lackey, and Eric Miller have
been accepted into the Mayerson
Foundation Summer Service Residency
Program to be held in June at Xavier
University. They will join with high
school students from throughout the
area to complete service work in
Cincinnati neighborhoods while staying
on campus at XU.
Ruvarashe Chimusoro, Ahustin Crawford,
Keion Humphrey, Jasmine Wade, and
Deanna Wilson have been selected for
the Wheeling Jesuit University Sum-
mer College and Career Exploration
program. They will travel to Wheeling,
W. Va., in July joining students from two
other Cristo Rey schools for a four-day
residency program to study resource
sustainability.
A Reflection on the First Year of the Bruins’ Student Government
By Paul Ebert, Student
Government Advisor
The Bruins’ school
spirit and ambition
is represented in its
founding Student
Government leaders
( as pictured ): Co-Presidents Keion Humphrey and Ruvarashe Chimusoro,
Secretary Kourtnie Duggins, Treasurer Shaniqua Rone and Vice President
Ahustin Crawford. We have also been supported by students longing to take part
in special projects – Tony Dallalio, Eric DeLeon, Maria Luning, and Will Moore.
Despite all the challenges of starting and adapting to a new school, these
student leaders were able to plan and implement several special events. Maybe
the most remarkable experience was the day of service they planned during
Catholic Schools Week. Their vision was grand, to go into the community and
give back. Though we did not have the resources to make that happen this year,
they were not deterred. Their recalibrated vision, led by the organizational efforts
of staff members Barb Letts and Jeff Otis, asked students to give back to the
school by cleaning it both inside and out. They are currently planning an
end-of-the-year party that mirrors the novel they read in English, “The Hunger
Games.” They have raised money through bake sales, planned and organized
dances, and represented us at many different formal events as the face of our
thriving student body.
Next year promises even more from our ambitious Student Government. Their
creativity and determination is unmatched by any one group of students I have
ever worked with in my career. Expect more service, more leadership, and more
fun from this core group of students. They will represent DePaul Cristo Rey in a
manner that will make us proud.
Back-to-School Schedule for AugustPlease make note of the following dates students are required to be at DPCR
in August.

attend Academic Bridge and CORE.
August 13-17: All 10th graders are required to attend CORE August 13-17.
August 20-21: All students (9th and 10th graders) will have on-the-job orientation.
The times for these orientations will vary and be provided later.
August 27: All students (9th and 10th graders) report for the first full day of school
and work.
More detailed information will be mailed to all school families this summer.
A Day to Reflect
All students participated in the
Freshmen Retreat on May 1 or 2. The
daylong experience included oppor-
tunities to reflect on the blessings and
challenges in their lives, team-building
activities and a class art project.
