A Cristo Rey Network School

1996

The first Cristo Rey school opened in Chicago, Illinois. Founded by Fr. John P. Foley, SJ, the Cristo Rey Network provides a quality, Catholic, college preparatory education to young people of limited financial means. Its mission is clear: college success for Cristo Rey Network students.

The success of the distinctive Corporate Work Study program was working even better than expected, and the success of the original Cristo Rey school and its innovative business model had become known to educators and others throughout the country. In response to inquiries from around the country, the Cristo Rey Network of schools was founded.

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, along with venture philanthropists B.J. and Bebe Cassin, provided seed funding to promote the replication of the Cristo Rey schools.

The Walton Family Foundation made a multi-million dollar gift to expand the network to 50 schools by 2022.

The World Innovation Summit for Education (WISE) serves as an international platform to build the future of education through innovation. It is the global reference in new successful approaches to education. Each year, the WISE Award is presented to innovative educational projects that are having a transformative impact on societies and education. Since 2009, WISE has received thousands of applications from over 130 countries. In 2012 the Cristo Rey Network was one of only six organizations to receive the WISE Award.

Providence Cristo Rey is a 2015 recipient of the Educational Excellence Award presented by the American Federation for Children and the Urban League.

Providence Cristo Rey Indianapolis opened in 2006, the 15th Cristo Rey Network School.

– Jaylan Anderson Class of 2014

Corporate Work Study

Our partnership with many of the most recognizable

companies in Indianapolis is changing the face of

education in our city. Students work each week in

a professional, entry-level job; a resource that is

a cost savings for companies. In return, students

gain valuable work experience, learn good work

habits and develop professional skills. Corporate

work study coordinators help students develop

professional career-ready and college-ready thinking

strategies while learning to write resumes and cover

letters and practice their interview skills. Through

the Corporate Work Study program, students earn

a portion of their tuition, making the dream of a

private, college preparatory education a reality.

“ MJ Insurance is a purpose-driven

company where we exist to

inspire the success, fulfillment

and wellbeing of each person we

serve. Not only do we serve our

associates, their families, our

clients and our business partners,

but equally as important to us

is serving our communities that

we live and work in. Whether

it is a work environment or an

entire community, we believe

that cultures change one person

at a time. Our partnership with

Providence Cristo Rey is in direct

alignment with that philosophy

given their mission to provide

a transformational educational

experience to those students with

an economic need.”
