We provide access and opportunity for students of religious, racial, and ethnic diversity to excel through rigorous academics, a corporate internship program, extracurricular activities, and faith formation. We transform lives in the Catholic, Jesuit tradition of faith, justice and reconciliation.

CRISTO REY NETWORK

Cristo Rey Jesuit High School is a member of the Cristo Rey Network. The Cristo Rey Network is the only network of high schools in the country that integrate four years of rigorous college preparatory academics with four years of professional work experience through the Corporate Internship Program. Comprised of 37 Catholic, college- and career-preparatory schools that today serve 12,000 students across 24 states and collectively claim 18,000 graduates, the Cristo Rey Network delivers a powerful and innovative approach to education. The Network is dedicated to strengthening the competence, confidence, and aspiration of students from economically-disadvantaged families and empowering them to build fulfilling lives that advance the common good. As a member of the Network, CRJ Baltimore adheres to the Mission Effectiveness Standards which establish the intent to which schools agree to operate, and by which they can fulfill their mission and empower students to succeed in college and life as productive, faith-filled individuals.

2 CRISTO REY JESUIT HIGH SCHOOL 2019-2020 ANNUAL REPORT CRISTO REY JESUIT HIGH SCHOOL 2019-2020 ANNUAL REPORT 3

The 2019-20 school year concluded differently than any I’ve ever experienced before. We established emergency funds to respond to students and alumni directly impacted by the pandemic. Scheduled and limited locker cleanouts replaced classroom farewells. Plans for summer college tours were cancelled. All-staff video meetings replaced our normal year-end goodbyes. Fortunately, we were able to gather, albeit in a delayed, socially-distant and limited way, to award the Class of 2020 with their hard-earned diplomas in July. After months of not seeing students in person, it was wonderful to be together – and it made me so proud to see them celebrating their achievements.

As you read through the pages of this Annual Report, I hope you’ll be inspired by student stories, lists of generous supporters, and photos of our students and faculty. We cannot do this work without the people named in these pages, and I am immensely grateful to the Cristo Rey Jesuit community for your belief and commitment to our mission as we continue to navigate this new environment. We are here to accompany students on their paths to success – no matter the obstacles we face. Thank you for joining us.

With gratitude,

William L. Heiser, Ed.D.President

DEAR CRISTO REY JESUIT COMMUNITY,

The 2019-2020 school year started off with the hope and excitement similar to that of any other – with our students returning to school, visiting with their friends and preparing to take on new learning experiences. Faculty and staff warmly greeted students with the hope of helping each scholar fulfill their goals for the year. Some were filled with the excitement and possibility of a new year, others felt a bit nervous about being in a new school and all that comes with navigating a new environment. What we did not know was that all of us would be navigating an entirely new environment come spring.

Thinking back to when the COVID-19 crisis was beginning in March, I cannot help but reflect on that time and the months that followed and be overcome with an overwhelming sense of gratitude. Gratitude to: our faculty and staff who pivoted quickly to distance learning to meet the needs of our students; our students who rose to the challenge of distance learning; our seniors who, despite not being able to celebrate once in a lifetime traditions like Prom, Magis Day, and Baccalaureate in person, led our student body with a spirit of perseverance; our corporate partners who expressed continued care and support for their student interns; And to you – our donors, volunteers, Leadership Advisory Council and Board of Trustees – who remained committed to our mission at a vulnerable and critical time.

FINANCIAL POSITIONThe success of the Cristo Rey Jesuit model relies on the generosity of others. We are profoundly grateful to our community that has made it fiscally possible for us to persist in our mission to empower the young people of Baltimore City for over a decade. Thank you for partnering with CRJ to ensure our scholars have continued access to stability, opportunity, and hope.

HORNETS IN HEALTHCAREOne of the unique identifiers of a Cristo Rey Jesuit education is the real-world work experience students receive through the hallmark Corporate Internship Program, or CIP. Through the CIP, we aim to position CRJ students as viable candidates for skilled, in-demand careers in industries in Baltimore – many of which fall into the healthcare and medicine fields as this sector continuously expands and evolves.

During the 2019-20 school year, 86 CRJ student interns worked at hospitals, healthcare, and health service facilities across the greater Baltimore area.

At their internships, CRJ scholars can expect to learn a lot about the medical profession on the job; daily tasks for student workers range anywhere from filing important documents, to cleaning and working with medical equipment, to engaging with and supporting

patients depending on the facility. For Chloe ’21, her experience at Mercy Medical Center through the CIP has been affirming – in her words, “I have met so many different people from different walks of life. These people have encouraged me to want to find a career helping people. My goal is to help people for the rest of my life. It’s been one of my dreams as a kid. This job is the perfect opportunity for me to start that dream.”

There is growing interest in these types of fulfilling opportunities and, to meet demand, CRJ will be

launching an Allied Health Dual Enrollment Program beginning in the 2020-21 school year to complement internship opportunities offered through the CIP. In this new curriculum-based program, students who are interested in pursuing medical careers can earn college credits while at CRJ through participation in Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) courses. In Fall 2020, 12 seniors have enrolled in this pilot program to put themselves a step ahead on their career pathways and help distinguish themselves among their peers.

In a time where we look to our health and medical professionals for expertise and guidance, CRJ is truly grateful for our partnerships with incredible industry-leaders in Baltimore. We thank our partner organizations for providing opportunities for the young women and men at CRJ who are eager to serve others and build up their community. If you are interested in supporting opportunities like these for our students, please reach out to John Busse, Director of the Corporate Internship Program, at [email protected] or 410-727-3255 ext. 2000.

CORPORATE INTERNSHIP PROGRAM PARTNERS 2019-2020Cristo Rey Jesuit partners with over 125 businesses and organizations throughout the greater Baltimore region to provide the young women and men of Baltimore City with a unique pathway to success in college, work, and life.

These partnerships, developed and sustained through the hallmark Corporate Internship Program (CIP), place every CRJ student in an entry-level position for five full days each month during the school year. Students work in a wide variety of industries including health care, hospitality, financial services, and more. These internships not only help offset the cost of our students’ education – they also provide them with the opportunity to learn from mentors and colleagues in their workplace.

Students complete internships each year of high school, beginning in their freshman year. We are grateful to the following companies and organizations that employed our students for the 2019-20 school year.

COMMUNITY PARTNERSCristo Rey Jesuit is grateful for the opportunity to fulfill our mission – while also advancing the significant missions of other Baltimore-area nonprofit organizations – through our community partnerships. For Bryce Jones ’20, his internship placement at the Loyola University Maryland’s Career Center wasn’t what he expected. “At first, it was pretty rough,” Bryce ’20 shared, adding, “I wasn’t used to working in an office environment.” Then just a sophomore at Cristo Rey Jesuit, Bryce struggled to adjust to the expectations of his new workplace.

Flash forward two years to the fall of 2019 and the once apprehensive Bryce stood beaming in front of his peers at CRJ’s schoolwide Awards and Recognition Ceremony. He was accepting an Employee of the Month Award Certificate for his exemplary work at his internship with the Career Center. His mom, who sat through each report card conference with patience and understanding of the corporate learning process, looked on from her seat with pride.

Bryce credits his supervisor at Loyola, Elaine Edelstein, with helping him to turn his internship around. He describes a pivotal moment: “One day, Ms. Elaine took me out to lunch and we had a talk about my experience. She told me she wanted the best for me and to see me shine, and that I needed to keep trying. It was tough love a little! I sat there thinking about that, and by the next day, I was a new man.”

For Elaine, who’s been involved with the Corporate Internship Program since 2014, this kind of encouragement is what it’s all about. When asked to name her favorite aspect of the CIP, she answered, “the informal mentoring that occurs as we get to know one

another and begin to build trust working together.” She explained, “It’s important to demonstrate care and concern to help students believe and understand we are committed to their success.” Luckily, when Bryce was feeling shy and overwhelmed by the unfamiliar environment, Elaine was paying attention.

“We all have a story to tell!,” Elaine added, “If we meet people where they are, listen and demonstrate we care about them, a good relationship will develop built on trust and respect.” This is a lesson that Bryce has taken to heart, and he reflects on his time with the Career Center as essential to helping him develop the skills he’ll need to succeed in college and his future career.

According to Bryce and Elaine, a strong work ethic and a positive attitude with yourself and others can contribute to success. “I would tell the next generation of CRJ Hornets to try to love your job — no matter what it is — because it’s providing great work experience,” Bryce advised. Elaine, echoing Bryce, shared young people should aim to “take advantage of every opportunity and experience to learn and grow...Always remember, all work is noble!”

STAND UP FOR STUDENTS 2020: AN INTERMISSION, NOT A FINALE. On March 13, 2020 - just two weeks shy of our annual scholarship fundraiser - Cristo Rey Jesuit (CRJ) made the difficult, but necessary, decision to cancel the 2020 Stand Up for Students in-person event and close our school campus indefinitely in response to the global health crisis.

In the face of these unprecedented events, we were consoled and strengthened by the unconditional support of our community. To our:

≠ Leadership Advisory Council members, who deftly guided us through uncharted territory≠ Event Sponsors, who stood with us in solidarity, converting their sponsorships to donations≠ Donors, whose contributions enabled us to host our first, fully virtual auction in lieu of the event≠ Ticket Purchasers, who pivoted along with us and graciously allowed us to convert their payments into donations≠ Bidders and Winners in our virtual auction, participating from home to support our mission≠ Students, who recorded a video message of thanks during their final days on campus≠ Contributors of time, talent, and funds, who supported our efforts when we needed it most

...we cannot thank you enough.

We hope to see you again in 2021 for what is always one of our favorite nights of the year, filled with laughter and hope.

$ of merit based aid the Class of 2020 earned: $2 million for their first year, $8 million over 4 years

% of graduates accepted to college 100%

# of total CRJ graduates 648

% of how many graduates enrolled in college within one year of their graduation 91%

% of how many graduates have earned, or are still working towards a degree 53%

CRJ graduates are earning a four-year degree at nearly 2x the rate of low-income college students nationally

What happens after a Hornet has flown the nest?

Thanks to their dedicated efforts and the guidance of their parents, mentors, teachers, and the CRJ College and Career Counseling team — they enroll, persist, and succeed! A phrase you might hear often in the CRJ College and Career Resource Center is ‘To and Through.’ This represents the idea that the CRJ community does not only support our students on their journey to college, but also provides a support system as scholars move through their post-secondary education and training.

We think the results of this initiative speak for themselves. Below are the Cristo Rey Jesuit post-secondary program and outcomes.

During the 2019-20 school year, the scholars at Cristo Rey Jesuit witnessed the world change before their eyes. This year threw many aspects of our society into sharp relief, maybe most of all the need for conversations and actions that will help us move towards racial equity and solidarity during a time of great injustice, divisiveness and isolation in our local and global communities.

On a cold day this past December, CRJ students and faculty organized and then marched in a prayer walk for peace through downtown Baltimore. The group spoke the names of 19 children who were lost to violence

in the City in 2019 and, in the words of Zach B. ’20, it “made me feel like I was truly a man for and with others...It made me feel like I made a real difference.” In reflection on the march, Jaida W. ’20 added, “This is something we don’t want to keep doing, but we’ll do it forever if we have to.”

The opportunity to continue this important work came soon after as protests sprang up around the country this summer.

Ife A. ’22 organized a student– and alumni–led peaceful protest on June 8, inviting parents, alumni, and teachers from CRJ, St. Ignatius Loyola

GRAD AT GRAD

Academy, Loyola Blakefield and Loyola University Maryland to join. Participants began the day with a prayer outside of the CRJ building and then proceeded to march to the Baltimore City Detention Center and to Baltimore City Hall, where the group observed an affecting 8 minute and 46 second moment of silence in remembrance of George Floyd.

In addition to being committed to doing justice, Cristo Rey Jesuit students also exemplify five other Graduate and Graduation (or ‘Grad at Grad’) traits by the time of their commencement ceremony: open to growth, intellectually competent, religious, loving, and work experienced.

MEN AND WOMEN FOR OTHERS: THE JESUIT WAY FORWARDOne of the tenets of a Cristo Rey Jesuit High School education – and of Jesuit education the world over – is the dedication to forming women and men for others. Following in this tradition, CRJ Hornets are committed to pursuing justice as evidenced by their actions this past year.

As a school community, we recognize students living and growing in these values and, each year, a senior is recognized as the winner of the Jesuit Schools Network Graduate at Graduation Award. This year Estefania Garcia Torres ’20 (pictured below) earned this important recognition.

REV. WILLIAM J. WATTERS, S.J. LEGACY SOCIETYOur Legacy Society pays tribute to one of CRJ’s founders, Father Bill Watters, and his vision and determination to open a Cristo Rey school here in Baltimore. Society members share this vision and determination and include CRJ in their estate plans to provide stability for CRJ in the long term. Legacy Society members’ support comes in many forms — some have included CRJ in their estate plans in a bequest, while others have made CRJ their IRA beneficiary or established a charitable trust.

If you are interested in learning more about planned giving and becoming a member of the Legacy Society, contact Meghan Tapscott at [email protected] or 443-573-9881
