A Few Words From the Administration

Dear Parent/Guardian: The 2018-2019 school year began on August 20th with teachers ex-cited to welcome our largest enrollment ever of 603 students to the new academic year!

All students at Cristo Rey take an academically rigorous program designed to prepare them for college. The following information will be helpful in making sure your son/daughter experiences success academically and enters fully into the high school experience that Cristo Rey offer:

The Library and Homework Center are open every day after school for students to study, complete homework, or work on projects with their classmates;

A number of teachers are available every day in Homework Center to offer students extra assistance, if they need it;

On most nights, students will have 2 to 3 hours of homework or study a night, even if they stay to work in the Library or Homework Center;

Students will need a quiet space at home to work and to study;

The Student Handbook, report cards, the school calendar, and Expreso (the monthly newsletter) contain important information like grades, dismissal times, school events; school information can also be found at www.cristorey.net

Involvement in extra-curricular sports and clubs will offer students a well-rounded high school experience and offer an opportunity to develop skills and talents in a number of areas; students must be academically eligible to fully participate, so they must continue to take a disciplined approach to their stud-ies.

Sunday, September 30th will be our first Parent-to-School / Report Card Day during which you will receive grades for the first mid-quarter of the year and have an opportunity to meet your son/daughter’s teachers. It is very important you and your son/daughter both attend this day to discuss with teachers his/her progress. This is also a reminder that all parents/guardians have access to their son/ daughter’s grades online. If you would like help setting this up, please see Mr. Durk or Mr. Walke in the gym on report card day. Please see the enclosed monthly calendar for important information in September. Estimado Padre de Familia: El año escolar 2018-2019 comenzó el 20 de agosto, con los maestros emocionados a dar la bienvenida a nuestra inscripción más grande de 603 estudiantes al nuevo año académico.

Todos los alumnos de Cristo Rey toman un programa académico riguro-so diseñado para prepararlos a la Universidad. La siguiente información será útil para que su hijo/a exprimente el éxito académico y entre com-pletamente en la experiencia secundaria que Cristo Rey ofrece:

La biblioteca y centro de tareas están abiertos todos los días después de escuela para el estudio, completar tareas o trabajo en proyectos con sus compañeros;

Unos maestros estáran disponibles cada día en el centro de tareas para ofrecer a los estudiantes ayuda adicional, si lo necesitan;

La mayoría de las noches, los estudiantes tendran de 2 a 3 horas de tarea o noche de estudio; incluso si se quedan a trabajar en la biblioteca o en el centro de tareas;

Los estudiantes necesitan un espacio tranquilo en su casa para trabajar y estudiar

La participación en clubes y deportes extraescolares ofrecen a los estudiantes una complete experiencia de escuela secudnaria y ofrecen una oportunidad de desarrollar sus habilidades y talentos en algunas áreas; los estudiantes deben ser académicamente elegi-bles para participar plenamente, así la importancia de adoptar un enfoque disciplinado para sus estudios.

El domingo 30 de Septiembre será nuestro primer Padre-a-la Escuela/ Día de Recoger las Calificaciones durante el cual recibirá calificacio-nes del primer medio-cuarto del año y tendrá la oportunidad de conocer a los maestros y asesor. Es muy importante que acompañe a su hijo/a en este día para hablar con los maestros sobre el progreso de su hijo/a. Esto también es un recordatorio de que todos los padres/guardianes tienen acceso a las calificaciones de su hijo/a en linea. Si necesita ayuda para confiurar esto, consulte con el Sr. Durk o Sr. Walke en el gimnasio el dia de calificaciones. Consulte el calendario mensual para obtener información importante en septiembre. Tuesday, September 11th- Professional Development Day

The CWSP hosts professional development days after school on half days. These sessions give your student the opportunity to de-

velop work skills, receive extra training and learn about different careers. Students may be asked by his/her employer to report to

work after half day classes are dismissed on this day, either to train or to be trained by another student team member. The CWSP

will notify you if your son/daughter must report to work. Lunch will be provided.

Attention parents: There is a potential scholarship opportunity for families that have multiple children attending Cristo Rey, or one child at Cristo Rey and another child in a Catholic elementary school. This scholarship is only for the upcoming year. To qualify, you must bring in or mail the following information to Mr. Crossett or Ms. Andrade in the Business Office by September 7:

Names and grades of all students at Catholic schools Name of Catholic elementary school for students Proof of annual tuition for this student (including any financial aid you are receiving from the elementary school)

Join Cristeros for our First-ever Homecoming Weekend! Friday will kickoff the weekend with a soccer game against hometown rival, Benito Juarez High School, at 6:30pm at the Pilsen Community Field at Harrison Park. On Saturday, join us for our signature tailgate event from 11am—3pm on the Cristo Rey Plaza in Pilsen! Our Leadership Advisory Council (LAC) is leading this 21+ event that will feature fabulous food, beverages, music, and more with a game-day feel. Homecoming Weekend will concluded with a multi-year reunion for graduates from the classes of 2003, 2008, 2013, and a 20-year reunion for our first graduating class from Cristo Rey in 1998. Soy la Sra. Juarez, coordinadora de actividades de padres de familia de Cristo Rey Jesuit High School, les invito cordialmente a que se involucren en la vida escolar de sus hijos, asistiendo a las asambleas infomativas que tenemos planeadas para ustedes cada bi-mestre. O también puede ser parte del club de padres, asistiendo a nuestras reuniones mensuales, o participar directamente en algunas de la actividades especificas para los padres de familia, que serán anunciadas en la primera asamblea del 12 de Septiem-bre. I am Ms. Juarez, coordinator of parenting activities at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School. I cordially invite you to become involved in the school life of your son/daughter by attending the informative assemblies we have planned for you each quarter. You can also join the Parent Club, attend our monthly meetings, or participate directly in some of the parent-specific activities that will be an-nounced at our first meeting on September 12. The schedule for the bimonthly assembly is from 6pm to 8pm and we have childcare for every assembly. The topic and dates for this school year are:

September 12th, Introduction to Cristo Rey Jesuit High School. November 7th, Topics about immigration, by Heartland Alliance. January 16th, Religious formation for parents. March 13th, Preparation for the parents for when students leave for college.

Para que esta conferencia sea más interactiva, habrá una actividad y conversaciones interesantes. It is almost that time when your son/ daughter will be applying to colleges and we want to remind you about the different types of scholarships available to students. Some examples of the scholarships available to students are: merit-based, need-based, athletic, minorities, religion, community service, gender-based, military, first-generation, etc. Many scholarship opportunities can be found in Naviance, an online resource tool that has been designed specifically for Cristo Rey Jesuit High School. Here, students can research college and view a listing of scholarship opportunities. Please encourage your son/ daughter to meet with Ms. Nieto, our Scholarship Coordinator for College Counseling, in the upcoming weeks. Thank you very much! Parents Information: Homework Center Procedures Cristo Rey Jesuit High School 2018-19

1. If a teacher sends the student to Homework Center, the student must arrive to Room 302 before 3:45pm that same day in the afternoon. No excuses (sports practice, doctor appointment, job, ride home, etc.) will be accepted. If the student arrives late, he or she will not be allowed to enter. 2. When they arrive, the student will give their ID card to the adult in charge of attendance. (If they do not have their ID card, they can attend to HWC session, but next day they must show their ID to Mr. Vasquez before classes start in the cafeteria, if not they will receive a detention). They will tell moderators why you are there and will tell the students which room to go to: a. Room 302 is the Sign-In Room and used for Mandatory Homework Center students. (Silence room) b. The small computer lab between Rooms 300 and 301 is the HWC Computer Room. c. Room 300 will used for “Teachers tutor and group working”. d. Room 301 is the Silent Study Room and the Tests/Quizzes Room. 3. If they are required to be there for missing a homework assignment, they MUST work on that missing assignment before doing anything else. If they finish that particular assignment, they may work on other homework or ask for tutor-ing. 4. If they decided do not come to HC they receive a DETENTION, the next day. We will notify the student and sign the detention slip to serve a detention the next day. If they miss 4 times, in one quarter they must serve a Saturday deten-tion and we will have a parents meeting. 5. If they need help with an assignment, there are teachers and tutors available throughout Homework Center. Just raise their hand for help. 6. At 4:45pm, they will get their yellow HC slip stamped by the adult moderator, and they will give the student back their ID card. It is THE STUDENT responsibility to turn in the completed assignment with the stamped yellow slip to their teacher the NEXT day of classes. That is the only way they will get any credit for the assignment. 7. Students are welcome to come to Homework Center at any time that they would like without being required to be there. It is a great quiet place to get a lot of homework done, and there are plenty of people to help. The students are free to come up to the Homework Center on their own whenever they would like. If they come on their own, they do not need to be there before 3:45pm and they can leave whenever they would like. They still must turn in your ID card when you enter Homework Center, and pick it back up when they leave. 8. We continue encourage our students using the "green slip" for coming to the homework center voluntarily. This slip will used for assessors and teachers as they see it convenient. 9. Students will be able to use their cell phones, only to get in touch with their parents in the third floor hallway before 3:45 pm. It will be prohibited use cell phone inside the classrooms during the time that HWC/Tutoring it takes.

Información para los padres: sobre Homework Center (Centro de tarea y tutoría) Cristo Rey Jesuit High School 2018-19

1. Si los maestros envían a sus hijos al Centro de Tareas obligatoriamente, ellos deberán llegar al salón 302 antes de las 3:45pm el mismo día que no entregaron su tarea. (No se aceptará ninguna excusa). Si ellos llegan tarde, no se les acepta-rá su entrada y perderán la oportunidad de ganar algo de crédito por su tarea incumplida. 2. Cuando ellos estén en el salón, deberán dejar sus ID’s en los recipientes correctos: obligatorio, no obligatorio, exá-menes y tutoría. (Si no tuviesen sus ID’s, podrán quedarse para la sesión de HC; pero al día siguiente deberán mostrar a Mr. Vasquez su ID antes de clases en la cafetería) Se han asignado los salones siguientes para desarrollar con mayor efectividad sus obligaciones.

a. Salón 302 para pasar la asistencia y para los estudiantes que deben obligatoriamente quedarse en el centro de tareas hasta las 4:45pm, allí se les pondrá el sello en sus boletas amarillas y de las tareas que hicieron. b. Salón de cómputo entre los salones 300 y 301, destinado para los estudiantes que necesiten utilizarlas, enviados por sus maestros, o los que acudan voluntariamente. c. Salón 301; en este salón se efectuarán los exámenes y deberán estar en silencio. d. Salón 300, servirá para aquellos estudiantes que deseen quedarse voluntariamente al centro de tutorías, allí estarán los maestros que les ayudarán con sus tareas y proyectos. 3. Si sus hijos están obligatoriamente en el Centro de Tareas, deberán trabajar en la tarea que no hicieron. Una vez que la terminen, podrán utilizar el resto de tiempo completando alguna otra tarea. 4. Si sus hijos deciden no acudir al HC, se les dará una “DETENCION” al día siguiente de su falta se les notificará, firma-rán el “blue slip” y servirán la detención al día siguiente de su notificación en la hora del almuerzo. A la cuarta falta en el quarter recibirán una detención de sábado. 5. Si sus hijos necesitan ayuda en alguna de las asignaturas, en el Centro de Tareas encontrarán a maestros que les ayudarán en resolver sus necesidades. Simplemente levanten sus manos y acudiremos a su lugar. 6. A las 4:45pm los estudiantes deberán pedir al maestro encargado del salón 302, que les selle sus papeletas amari-llas, para que les sirva como prueba el día siguiente al entregar sus tareas ya realizadas a sus maestros, esta es la única prue-ba de su asistencia al Centro de Estudios. 7. Cualquier estudiante es bienvenido al Centro de estudios, así no lo envíen obligatoriamente sus maestros, ellos po-drán utilizar su tiempo de la manera que vean mas conveniente, siempre siguiendo las reglas del Centro y retirándose cuan-do los estudiantes así lo estimen conveniente. Al inicio de la sesión se les pedirá su ID para llevar el control respectivo. 8. Este año seguiremos utilizando el “pase verde” el cual se utilizará por los asesores y maestros bajo su criterio, para los estudiantes que quieran acudir al HWC/Tutoría voluntariamente. 9. Los estudiantes podrán utilizar sus celulares en el pasillo del tercer piso para contactarse con sus padres únicamen-te antes que empiece el HWC (3:45pm), estará prohibido utilizarlos dentro de los salones de clase.

En resumen, el centro de tareas y tutorías; es el lugar dentro de la escuela, donde los estudiantes pueden recibir ayuda, rea-lizar las tareas que no pudieron hacer ese día o dar un examen si es que perdieron la oportunidad por ausencias u otros mo-tivos.
