BOWMAN PAST PRES.-LEB CO. HISTORICAL SOCIETY As the town grew, stores and small business establishments were opened. Joseph Horstick, son of Conrad, kept a store on what was known as the Witmer property on West Main Street. The building has since been torn down and dismantled. The account books of the store from 1813-1825 show the price and type of goods sold at a typical country store. The books are now in the Library of the Lebanon County Historical Society, through the courtesy of the Horstick family. Other stores and business establishments were opened: Brunner Carriage Shop, John Henry Plow Factory, Stahle Wooden Farm Implements, Snoddy Wheelwright Shop, Forney-Troxell Furniture and Cabinet Shop (later known as Wm. Vicki VELT wrote to say even though SNODDY was her great aunt, she knew her by her nickname before she learned the two were related. "Her husband, Fred, and my grandfather, Roy SNODDY, were brothers," VELT explained. "She and Uncle Fred use (sic) to have a farm near Smithville. They never had any children. My mother remembers that she was a terrific cook, a kind person and a hard worker. After Uncle Fred died in 1955, Lela moved to Wooster -- her house still stands just north of West Liberty Street." VELT said no one in her family can remember when SNODDY started wandering the streets, rummaging through garbage cans looking for food for the cats that came to her back door or for trinkets to hang in her windows. "I recall one time when my grandmother and I visited to bring her food and try to help her. Her mind wandered back to when she was on the farm. She would talk about needing to take care of her sheep," said VELT. "I was very young and could not understand why she talked as if she was still living on her farm. At that time the word Alzheimer's was not known -- but as I look back and remember her, I can only guess that she probably suffered from this disease or perhaps dementia. "When Aunt Lela died in 1963 she left the majority of her estate to the Wooster Hospital, the Children's Home, and her church. To the end," VELT pointed out, "she was still thinking about taking care of others." Speaking of Lela SNODDY, did you know there used to be a musical group called "Trash Can Annie"?Members of the group were brothers and former Wooster residents John and Jim BRINKERHOFF, along with Butch CASSADY. John BRINKERHOFF was the drummer and lead vocalist, Jim BRINKERHOFF, guitarist and background vocalist and CASSADY, bass, keyboards and background vocalist. Wooster musician Rich BALL was a mentor early in the BRINKERHOFFS' career and showed me the cover of one of the group's CDs called "Pass the Trash." Ball said he attended a reunion gig by the BRINKERHOFFS last year at the Iron Pony in Loudonville. It had been 30 years since Ball last heard them play at the Madisonburg Grange Hall. On the "Pass the Trash" CD, the group gives thanks to a long list of people including "'Annie,' wherever you are." Born in Harrisburg, Pa., the younger of two daughters of Arthur Harrison SNODDY and Frances E. SULLENBERGER. Her father died when she was 8 months old; her sister two. The family moved to Philadelphia in 1925 and she graduated in 1931 from Frankford High School; married Joseph Martin Reinhardt III, July 9, 1933. He preceded her in death in 1969 also on Jan. 7. She was employed for 50 years, 20 as accounts clerk for Silco Cut Price Stores; the final 20 as payroll clerk for St. Christopher's Children's Hospital, Philadelphia. At 64, she detected colon cancer, had radical surgery, lived the rest of her life cancer-free, dying fully aware following mini strokes since March. While still a pedestrian, she survived being struck by two "hit-run" vehicles. Following hip fracture in 2002, she moved to Reeders Memorial Home. Though an Evangelical United Brethren, she served in her husband's Evangelical and Reformed Church as Sunday school teacher and pianist. After his death, she was pianist for her home church, Juniata Park United Methodist. A gifted seamstress, she made designer clothing and gowns, and was mechanically ingenious. Loughridge, longtime resident of Wooster, Ohio, died peacefully on Aug. 7, 2006, in Colorado, where she had been with her son, John, for the last four years. Mrs. Loughridge, 87, was born in Wayne County, Ohio, on Oct. 3, 1918, to Vernon and Margaret Snoddy. Her father was selected the Master Farmer of Ohio and later owned and operated the Smith Dairy in Wooster. Hazel graduated from Wooster High School and earned a bachelor's degree from Oberlin College. In 1940,

she married James Loughridge III, who was from Newark, Ohio. Hazel's husband and her sons, John and Ned, attended and graduated from the College of Wooster. Mrs. Loughridge taught junior high school in Wooster, Danville, Cuyahoga Falls, Brunswick, Toronto, and Wakeman, Ohio, before retiring in 1976. She and her husband moved to Wooster in 1977, where they were active members of Westminster Presbyterian Church. While living in Wooster, Hazel worked several years in the Wayne County Public Library and was a very dedicated volunteer at People to People. Hazel was from a family of eight children and she was preceded in death by her parents and by three brothers, (James, William, and Richard) and three sisters, (Goldie Krites, Marie Stewart, and Dorothy Murphy). Only her sister, June Robfogel, remains. Hazel's death was also preceded by that of two infant sons and her husband, James Loughridge III, in 1995. Mrs. Loughridge is survived by two sons, John of Sedalia, Colo. and Ned of Barrington, Ill; two grandchildren, Korrin Dykhouse of Clermont, Fla., and Jennifer Reid of Overland Park, Kan., and five great-grandchildren. A Memorial Service will be held at Westminster Presbyterian Church at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12. Interment will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery in Granville, Ohio, where her husband and two infant sons are already buried. It was Mrs. Loughridge's wish that memorial contributions be made in lieu of flowers. Her sons have requested that any contributions be made to the national Alzheimer's association in order to further the fight against the terrible disease from which Hazel suffered in her last few years. Born May 24, 1922, on the family farm in rural Polk where he resided until May 2003, he was the son of Lloyd and Daisy (SNODDY) WEAVER. Mr. WEAVER enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in January 1943 and was assigned to Kessler Field in Mississippi. He attended Mississippi State College, San Antonio Cadet Center, Texas Gunnery School in Harlington, Texas, and O.U.T. Training at Pioute, Texas. He was a Gunner in the Waist, Tail and Ball Turret of the B-17, serving with the 8th Air Force, 1st Air Division. Mr. WEAVER flew 25 missions over Europe and was shot down twice. The first time East of Paris in the fall of 1944, the second time was over Berlin on March 19, 1945. He was discharged October 9, 1945 with the rank of Staff Sergeant. He was a graduate of Polk High School in 1940 and was a volunteer with the Polk Lions Club. He was a full time farmer until his retirement if 2003 and had been a salesman for McNess Feed and Crows Seed Corn. Mr. WEAVER was a previous member of Polk Methodist Church where he sang in the choir, served on the official board and taught Sunday school. He was a previous member of Jackson grange and the Farm Bureau. He was a member of the Lucas Vaughn Post No. 219 and served as substitute mail carrier. He was a member of the NRA. He was known for his gift of conversation and enjoyed playing euchre. He was a current member of Savannah United Methodist Church. He enlisted in the Army in 1947, spending all his enlisted time on Governor's Island, New York in Intelligence Headquarters. He worked in the lab at Ohio Boxboard in Rittman, leaving there to attend Howard Trade School and became a journeyman carpenter, retiring in 1987. He enjoyed caring for his fruit trees and his bees in later years. He is survived by his wife, G. Marcene (HERSHEY) of 54 years. He will be sadly missed by his seven children, Kimberly (K.J.) On June 16, 1972, Mr. SNODDY was married to Amy HODGES SNODDY, who survives of the home. Mr. SNODDY was a graduate of Wooster, Ohio, schools and ICS Engineering School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army where he earned his certificate for Jungle Survival Expert. Mr. SNODDY was plant manager for Rubber Maid for 32 years. James Chase - GRAYSLAKE, Ill. -- Walking in obedience and surrounded by God's love and grace, James Edward Chase entered the Kingdom on his 49th birthday, Dec. 16, 1999. Jim loved God and desired to serve Him to the best of his ability. His home and heart will always open to help others in their faith, and to serve the body of Christ. He especially enjoyed teaching young people and seeing them grow spiritually. His loving and joyful presence will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Jim was born in Bryan, Ohio and was a graduate of North Central Technical College and National Louis University. As a mechanical engineer, he gained recognition for the development of three patents for the pharmaceutical field. Most recently, he served the industry as a consultant. Jim's strong desire to serve God was evident by his deep involvement in Christian ministry. He was a member of the Village Church of Gurnee where he served in a variety of teaching positions as well as an elder. Kathy (Snoddy), his wife of 25 years, two sons, Matthew and Jonathan, and a daughter, Heather, all of Grayslake, Ill., survive Jim. Other survivors include Jim's mother, Laverne (Tom) Ames of Millersburg; grandmother, Gladys Chase of New London; siblings, Charles (Deborah) Chase of Sarasota, Fla., Stephen (Karen) Chase of Fort Mill, S.C., and Deborah (Tim) Allison and Denise (Ron) Zaugg, both of Millersburg; stepbrother, Les (Kim) Ames of Prospect; stepmother, Barbara Chase of Sarasota, Fla.; numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews; mother and father-in-law, Walter (Sue) Snoddy of Shreve and a brother-in-law, Keith (Cheri) Snoddy of Shreve. His father, Norbert Chase, preceded him in death. Visitation will be at noon on Tuesday at the Village Church of Gurnee, 1319 N. Hunt Club Road, Gurnee, Ill., followed by a 1 p.m. service at the church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Chase Children Educational Fund, in care of the Village Church of Gurnee, Ill. Marsh Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
