Body Worn Cameras
All Sergeants and Officers assigned to
the Desert Horizon Precinct are now
equipped with body worn cameras!
July 29th was the official first day of the
cameras being part of DHP’s sergeants
and officers required equipment. When
an officer receives a call for service,
during any enforcement activity, or any
investigatory stop, the camera will be
rolling.
Equipping our officers with body worn
cameras provides us with an
opportunity for the community to see a little bit more of what our officers
see.
The camera is worn on the front of the officers uniform, it has 12 hours of
battery life and is downloaded nightly at the end of the officers’ shift. We
will all be getting used to our new equipment together so next time you
see your Desert Horizon Precinct Officer, look for their camera and smile!
The upcoming school year is upon us, I hope you have enjoyed your
summer!

Words of Encouragement
Over the past few weeks gestures of kindness have been occurring.
Officers from the Desert Horizon Precinct and Sunnyslope Substation,
have been a victim to this “kindness”. Special visitors have been at-
tending their briefings, such as Senator Kate Brophy McGee, Council
Woman Deb Stark, community activist AJ Marsden, and Jeff Tissot from East Sunnyslope
Block Watch. These special visitors have been appearing at briefings and saying Thank you to
the officers.
Thank you Senator, Council Woman and everyone else who joined in for the briefings for all
those words of encouragement and endless support.

New Xeriscape Landscape Welcomes Visitors to Phoenix Sky Harbor
There’s a new look at Phoenix Sky Harbor, and it’s one that welcomes visitors with a manicured
version of the natural Sonoran Desert we live in.
America’s Friendliest Airport® has created a visually attractive xeriscape landscape that
highlights native trees, plants and wildflowers, while sipping just a fraction of its former water usage.
Visitors and passengers can enjoy:
435 low-water-use trees such as palo verdes and shoestring acacias
75 saguaros, 61 of which were salvaged from the Rental Car Center and other airport areas
275 large signature cacti that include ocotillo, totem pole, Mexican fence post, organ pipe and
Argentine toothpick
Nearly 3,000 accent plants, succulents and shrubs
But there’s more than just meets the eye.
A smart, state-of-the-art irrigation system was installed that monitors irrigation flow rates,
climatic conditions, ambient temperature and soil moisture in the field 24 hours a day, 365 days
of the year. With all these efforts, Phoenix Sky Harbor is expected to save 5.3 million gallons of
water annually. Most of this water was used to maintain the nearly 11 acres of grass that was
removed as part of the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport Turf Removal Project This project
made special use of rock-filled gabion baskets. Gabion baskets are typically used near slopes
and banks to combat water erosion. There are now 1.7 miles of gabions in select areas where
turf used to grow, and they are designed to mimic the swirling wingtip vortex created by high-
speed jets.
Most importantly, visitors and passengers will be treated to a landscape that combines art
and science in perfect harmony.

Tip a Cop On Saturday, August 17, 2019 police departments across the valley including Phoenix,
Scottsdale, Tempe, Chandler, and Glendale all participated in a Tip a Cop Event at all the
Chompies Restaurant locations. If you are not sure what Tip a Cop is, well it is a fundraising
event where police departments are able to raise money for athletes that participate in Special
Olympics. Officers work with servers on waiting on tables, such as taking food orders, running
food, and busing tables. In a sense the public “tips” the cop for their service and the officer puts
that money towards Special Olympics. At every event, 100% of the proceeds raised go towards
Special Olympics Arizona. In other words, all funds that are raised in Arizona, stay in Arizona and
will go directly towards athletes that participate in Special Olympics Arizona.
Thank you to Chompies Restaurants for letting all the Police Departments work with you to raise
money for a great cause. Thank you to all that helped out as well.

Thank You Mario and Matt!!
Recently, vandals decided to graffiti on an American flag that was painted on a brick wall in the
area of 40th St and Cactus. Officer Matt Morgan and Officer Mario Lozoya noticed it and
immediately wanted to do something about it. So they took it upon themselves to paint over the
graffiti and restore the flag back to original condition. Thank you Mario and Matt for your hard
work to the community. Your dedication turned an ugly situation good.

Desert Horizon Youth Experience Program
Recently the Community Action Officers of the Desert Horizon Precinct hosted a Youth Experience Program.
This was a two day event where kids entering 7th—8th grade were able to experience multiple demonstrations
over several topics related to the police department. This was a great experience for the kids...they very much
enjoyed it! From visiting the 911– Communications room, SWAT, the Air Unit to wearing beer goggles and
trying to ride a bike.
Thank you Sgt. Alexander and her squad for giving these kids an experience of a life time!
