EXCELLENCE IN DESIGN PARTNERSHIP WITH OUR CLIENTS QUALITY IN OUR PROJECTS
Architecture | EngineeringProject & Construction Management
Untitled-2 1 7/30/15 6:45 PM
E very year since 1958, Hawaii’s architecture community has honored the most outstanding achievements of our members’ submitted works as determined by an esteemed jury of our peers. Yet this
year’s AIA Honolulu Design Awards program represents a new beginning for the oldest and most prestigious program of its type in Hawaii.
In recognition of the complexity of many of today’s building projects, an Honorable Mention award was added this year to recognize excellence in one particular aspect of a project that stood out, in the opinion of the jury. The intent is to highlight specific design ideals and, by doing so, to elevate our perceptions and increase understanding of the myriad design factors that shape our successful works. This year’s program has also been expanded to illuminate a broader range of project types, with project categories added to highlight the best in Residential, Commercial/Industrial, Institutional and Unbuilt projects.
Each of this year’s 36 entries presented unique project complexities for which our AIA Honolulu member-architects were challenged to find innovative and cost-effective solutions. As in past years, our annual awards program is a celebration of design excellence in our members’ response to those challenges. From small homes and luxury residences,
to new or renovated retail stores and restaurants, pre- and high schools, government agencies to multimillion-dollar research facilities, each entry brought unique complexities and constraints.
The 2015 Design Award winners reflect excellence in response to program requirements and the positive impact of the project on the surrounding community. As always, sustainability and energy efficiency, appropriateness of materials as well as visual character, creativity and innovation were closely considered.
I thank all of our members who submitted projects for consideration and offer my deepest congratulations to the 2015 award winners.

ATOP A 3-ACRE HILLTOP SITE near Kalihiwai Bay on Kauai, the contemporary aesthetic interests of both owner and architect are the foundation for Hut House, a residential retreat for artist and designer Chan Luu. Two years of intensely collaborative design research and time spent on site resulted in a structure that fully embraces the land, natural climate and regional architectural style.
Appearing as a single mass from the exterior, the design draws from the typical Hawaiian roof, colonial island architecture and Moorish courtyard, together providing an interior retreat from the continuous perimeter lanai.
The programmatic distribution of the house resembles a micro village, with four distinct
volumes and circulation arranged around a partially open central courtyard protected by a single, monolithic roof. The primary volumes, the garage, art studio, guest bedrooms, main bedroom and living quarters, are encircled by a lanai broken into a series of distinct places oriented toward the mountains, valley and Kilauea Lighthouse. The positioning of the volumes and thin perimeter columns articulates the lanai, creating a doubling effect between the insulated room and exterior space under the roof.
Four oversize skylights, volumetrically embedded in the corners of the courtyard, are carved out of the intersecting planes of roof to create a chimney effect. Thus, the roof acts as both an umbrella and a prism, sheltering the

house is centered around. Intersecting views across
the courtyard are especially poignant when it rains; two large downspouts of water encourage contemplation.”

house from Kauai’s heavy rains while filtering natural daylight and air.
Understated exterior materials of cedar shingles, plaster, concrete, and sapele windows and doors were designed to weather gracefully to a palette of gray tones over time. The interior incorporates durable concrete floors in the main communal spaces, and tactile white oak wood and basalt stone flooring in the private rooms. White interior walls and ceilings augment the soaring geometries of the roof and reflect natural light from the skylights and windows. n
“Hut House is a modern take on the traditional Hawaiian home, especially the shape of the hip roof. The roof heights vary to accommodate four torqued skylight wells that bounce indirect light into the home.” –Project Architect

LOCATED ON A FORMER RANCH ON THE BIG ISLAND, Kahua Kuili’s collection of playful, camplike structures are an artful nod to the property’s rich paniolo history. Designed to be a family retreat, the project articulates a distinct sense of place moderating between the large resort of Kukio and the historic ranch lands.
Harnessing a strong visual relationship with the ocean and the adjacent cinder cone, Pu’u Kuili, critical aspects of the design are reflected through the emphasis of landforms and the integration of the architecture into
the site. This strategy included the re-naturalization of the lot, which incorporates a collapsed lava tube and bunch grasses, as well as local stone cowboy walls used as markers along property boundaries.
The main hale is a comfortable gathering space, retaining intimacy and relaxation regardless of the number of guests. Family members can gather in the simple indoor/outdoor living areas replete with shaded and sunny lounge spots. These common outdoor activity spaces link separate structures together, creating a sense of community and

The open backyard includes a large overhang of western red cedar to shelter a tiki bar and cozy seating. This area spills into the pool and spa, complimented by lounge chairs and ocean views. A rustic luau area encourages congregation beneath the shade of a nearby kiawe tree.

THE 350,000-SQUARE-FOOT NOAA Daniel K. Inouye Regional Center encompasses the innovative reuse of two historic, World War II-era airplane hangars linked by a new addition on a national historical landmark site on Pearl Harbor’s Ford Island. The facility is a state-of-the-art sustainable research and administrative campus for over 800 people committed to NOAA’s mission, the cultural traditions of the Pacific region and the island’s ecology.
The overarching goal for the center is to
accommodate new uses while restoring and preserving the historic character of the site. Historic guidelines require that new buildings and landscape elements be compatible with but not mimic the original architecture and site design. The resulting design flourished despite this constraint, finding a balance between old and new, respect and innovation.
The new building is the main entrance for the NOAA campus, with clear and simple forms within a defined “architrave” at the front door

that complement the scale and materiality of the existing hangar buildings, built by esteemed architect Albert Kahn. The addition brings the two hangars back to life while providing the modern, appropriate presence required for a national facility.
The sustainably designed facility aspires to be the most environmentally innovative national historic landmark in the U.S., thus creating a public presence and identity for NOAA that promotes public outreach and education while enhancing a range of important partnerships.
The interior environment is organized around the principles of campus design, including a central
gathering place; a program-intensive workplace centered around internal quadrangles of open space; and primary and secondary circulation routes that direct people through the center. Deep recesses, or reveals, enable the hangars to retain their identities as distinct structures united by the addition’s roof elements and contemporary materials that harmonize with the traditional materials of the hangars.
Sustainable materials and systems add a layer of biomimicry that will reduce environmental impact, increase long-term durability, and support occupant comfort and health. n

The center’s roof captures rainwater and distributes it to bio-swales in the landscape.
Passive cooling units capture their condensate, recycling it into a grey-water system
within the complex.
The new center encompasses the principles of a sensitive architectural intervention in a historic context.
The center serves a diverse range of functions, with wet and dry research laboratories, a dive center, a research library, a dining hall, a fitness center, an auditorium, administrative offices, conferences and meeting areas, and an abundance of informal collaboration space.
