Design and Technology

The Year 7’s first project in Design Technology is the ‘Block Bot’. These fun characters were designed and made by our budding designers who learnt about marking out, cutting and finishing wood products.

The photos from last years year 7’s shows how talented our young designers can be. The challenge has been set high for this years’ year 7’s; lets see if they can do even better!

Car ParkingThe area at the front of the College, further along North Trade Road and the adjoining roads continue to be very busy, particularly at the beginning and end of the day. Coaches need to be able to pass through the site and I would be grateful if parents could keep the front of the College clear at peak times.

I have also had to field calls from our neighbours, especially in Battle Gates complaining that parents are obstructing their driveways. I have also been asked by the owners of properties in the roads adjoining North Trade Road to ask that parents are considerate in the way which they drive and park so as not to pose a danger to pupils and other pedestrians.

Could I also take this opportunity to remind parents that there are no rights of way through the College? Cars driving onto the site to drop off or pick up their children or using the entrances as an area to turn round, do constitute a hazard to our pupils and members of staff, especially at the start and end of the school day.

Thank you for your co-operation.

Mr Swatton

CareersThe recent ‘Moving On’ Event for Year 11 students was very well attended with a real buzz created by the assemblies and drop-in session at lunchtime. Many of the students gained a clearer picture of what was on offer to them next year and have started making plans for their future.

Can we remind Year 11 parents that the application process has begun in Careers lessons and that Year 11 students are being issued with log in details for the e-Prospectus and application system? Our careers members of staff are trained on how to support students with their online application. Students will also be guided through the application process in their weekly Careers lessons. Students are also able to log in from home should you wish to work on their applications with them.

Students in year 11 are currently being invited to attend one to one careers interviews with our adviser Mrs Masters to give them an opportunity to discuss their options for further education. If any student or parent wishes to speak to Mrs Masters please email her on:

[email protected].

We are entering the period of time when most of the College or Sixth Form open days or evenings are scheduled. We recently sent home some information regarding open events and application dates which we hope you found useful. Please also check the websites of any post-16 providers you are interested in. There are also a number of posters from educational providers with the details of their open events on the Careers display board next to room 9. Additionally there are links available on the Careers homepage. Please be aware that the application process for the Kent schools is very early and that they must be contacted independently. If you need any information, advice or guidance regarding careers we would ask you, in the first instance, to go to the careers page on the learning zone and follow the links to the many very informative websites there. If you still have questions or need further input, please contact the careers team at the College. We will then attempt to provide the support you require. Any interviews would be open to both pupils and parents to attend.

College applications should be completed by the end of December at the latest to avoid disappointment. Anyone requiring further advice on careers should contact Mrs Masters at the College in the first instance.

the London Aquatic Centre on 16th November. Congratulations to them and we wish them all the best for the final.

Peter, Ollie, Charlie & Joe

My thanks must go to Mrs Conte, whose support, enthusiasm and humour make the whole experience so enjoyable for all.

Edulink AppJust a quick reminder about the best way to update basic information via this app - Log in to EdulinkOne and select the ‘Update Information’ from the homepage. This will take you to the ‘Data Collection’ page:

Click on the two arrows at the right hand side of your name and select your child (you will need to do this for each child at the school).

Scroll down to the bottom of the page where it says parental consent. Click on the drop down list and check what has been selected. Make any amendments as necessary and ‘save’ it. Thank you.

Regional Relay Swimming CompetitionMr Cunningham and Mrs Conte took 16 excited swimmers to the East Sussex area qualifiers for the annual National Schools’ Team Championships at the Sovereign Centre, Eastbourne on Wednesday 9th October.

Year 7 & 8 Girls - Competing in their first ever event, the Year 7 girls did fantastically well considering they are at the bottom of their age group. This was an invaluable experience and next year will be a great opportunity to compete for the medals, especially as we are blessed with so many talented youngsters in this age group. Team A Team B

Year 7 & 8 Boys - Like the girls, the boys were a year younger than many of their rivals and this competition was a great experience for the first timers. They swam very well in both of their races and particularly impressive in the Freestyle relay.

Year 9 & 10 Intermediate Team

This team benefitted from previous years’ experience and were confident going into this meet. In both races they combined some very fast swimming with slick changeovers and won the East Sussex qualifier. A nervous wait Wednesday night ensued to see if, when the overall Sussex results were posted, their times would give them a chance at a National Final qualification. Confirmation of winning the overall Sussex 4x50m Freestyle relay means that if their time ranks in the top 20 in the country, they will be invited to compete at the National Finals at the Aquatics Centre in London in November. This is a truly outstanding result for some very hardworking and enthusiastic swimmers!

Lake District TripTwenty-four students left Claverham for 4 days in the Lake District on Thursday 21st September. After a long drive the group, chaffeured by Mr Swatton, Mr Ockmore, Mr Sheppard and Mr Harrold alongside Miss Comfort, arrived safely in Keswick in preparation for two tough walking days in the mountains.

Day one saw the group climb the tallest mountain in England, Scafell Pike, in near perfect conditions with clear views of the Isle of Man from the summit which stands at 978m above sea level.

Day two started early and after some moans and groans the group were back out, climbing Dove Crag in double quick time. At the top of the mountain the group split into two and challenged themselves across Hart Crag, Fairfield and down to Grisedale Tarn. One of the groups then went on to climb Dollywaggon Pike, Helvellyn and Striding Edge.

The students made memories that will hopefully stay with them forever as well as challenging themselves on the mountains of the Lake District.

Well done all and thank you to all the staff for supporting the students on this epic adventure.

Cross-Country Inter House WeekJust a reminder that the week beginning 21st October, there will be the Inter House Cross-Country Competition taking place.

Pupils will be taking part during their normal double PE lessons (it will be a week 2). They need to ensure that they bring old trainers and appropriate outdoor PE kit with a bottle of water.

Points are awarded to pupils for taking part and also medals are given out to the top three in each house in each year group, so all to run for!

Mr Jones

‘Telling Tales’On the 13th of October students from years 8, 9 and 10 took part in the ‘Telling Tales’ event at the Battle of Hastings re-enactment. The project, which began in early September involved working alongside English Heritage and published author James Aitcheson.

After a visit to the site, a writers workshop and public speaking training, James guided our students through the process of writing a short story about 1066 and the Battle of Hastings. The students read extracts from their stories in the Dormitory building of the Abbey in front of guests. Following this, their stories will be put together in a book, a copy of which will be kept at Battle Abbey and at school.

The stories themselves really were fantastic. James was really impressed by the imaginative pieces that were written; from a slave child’s story, love and death on the battlefield, to a young girl struggling to find herself, our students produced stories which embedded themselves in the history of 1066, but added issues and morality which affect our modern life. Congratulations to all the students involved.

Ellie, Chloe, Charlotte, Jack, Rosabella, Caryanne, Anastasia, Kaytlin, Millie, Charlotte, Hannah, Dean and Mia.
