Kind hearts, thoughts, words and deeds are what all of us strive for and hopefully have accomplished in our lives. I cannot believe that it is already June and soon the first half of 2014 will be behind us. On May 1st our membership meeting found Ellen Magnis of the Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center speaking to us. Our club has for the last few years gathered stuffed animals for this very worthy organization. It is a sad fact that there are many abused children in the metroplex but it

also good to know that there are trained personnel to comfort them. The club just had a very successful Industry Appreciation Event at the

Dallas Petroleum Club on May 22nd. This was to express our appreciation to our bosses and the awesome sponsors and donors which supported us this year. The speaker was Mr. Ted Collins from Midland and he gave a short speech regarding all the changes in our industry he has seen in his lifetime. He also thinks that the future looks very bright for the industry. Thanks to our Vice President, Peggy Loyd for putting this event together for the club!

MAY SPEAKER Recap

|MS. ELLEN MAGNIS | CHIEF OF EXTERNAL AFFAIRS | DALLAS CHILDREN’S ADVOCACY CENTER|

Our May speaker was Ellen Magnis from the Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center. Ellen is the Chief of External Affairs responsible for community outreach and education for the DCAC. She also oversees the agency’s marketing and public relations efforts and legislative relationships. Ellen is responsible for the organization’s annual internationally-recognized Crimes Against Children Conference that draws 3,000+ professionals for a week-long training. Ellen also serves on the North Central Texas Council of Governments Criminal Justice Policy Development Committee. The purpose of the Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center is to coordinate the investigation and prosecution of the most severe cases of child abuse in our community. DCAC clients are children who have been sexually abused, severely physically abused, or children who have witnessed a violent crime. The DCAC’s mission statement is to improve the lives of abused children in Dallas County and to provide national leadership on child abuse issues. The DCAC has only been around since 1991but is one of the oldest centers for child abuse in the U.S. The DCAC lists some fast facts on their website. These are statistics related to Dallas County for 2013 alone. There were 5,505 (15 children per day) confirmed victims of child abuse and neglect. 1,670 children (5 children per day) were removed from their homes as a result of abuse. 17 children in Dallas County died from child abuse. Those are harsh facts. Again, this is Dallas County only. Can you imagine what the numbers are nation-wide? The DCAC handled 2,800 of those cases in 2013. Ellen stated that their average client is a 9-10 year old girl, sexually abused by someone she knows and trusts. Without the help of DCAC, many of those children eventually end up with drug and alcohol problems later. Teen pregnancy, suicide, depression, mental and physical health issues like obesity and high blood pressure are all common if the issues are not dealt with. These children grow up feeling that something is wrong with them and that they are damaged goods. The DCAC helps to release some of that energy before more harm is done. The children begin the process at DCAC with a specially trained forensic interviewer who listens to the child’s story and asks non-leading questions to help the child talk about the trauma that they have experienced. One of the important aspects about this interview is that the child does not have to be processed by multiple professionals which reduces the trauma for the child and provides a stronger case if the case should go to court. Ellen explained how the interview is captured on video so the police, CPS, the courts, etc. can decide on what needs to be done. The interviewer also attends court with the child. Many had questions for Ellen on what kinds of questions can be asked and some of the obstacles of the interviewer to get the child to open up in terms that can be understood. Ellen explained that most children don’t tell – only 1 in 10. She related a study the Kaiser Health Plans did of adults that revealed 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys were abused as children. The DCAC provides free therapy to all of its clients for as long as it is needed. Therapy can take the form of play, to art, to music, to animals. The DCAC also works with adults who have repressed memories of abuse as children. Ellen talked about their new facilities on Samuell Blvd. right off of IH 30. They have so much more room now which enables them to do a better job. They now have room to have a research director on staff who will study success rates of different types of therapy. They also have room to house a special unit of the Dallas Police Dept., 5 units of Child Protective Services, and an Assistant District Attorney. Having everyone under one roof aids greatly in collaboration, communication, and ultimately efficiency in helping the child. Ellen gave some great pointers as to what we can do if we suspect child abuse and our legal obligations to follow through. She also gave us some ideas of how we can help more. The center has a clothes closet to provide clothing in case a child cannot go home. They only take donations of new clothing. The stuffed animals we have provided them each of the last three years also play a part. Their website also provides lists of donation items they can use. We as a club can also get more involved by volunteering at the center to have a story book time with the children. To learn more, you can visit their website at www.dcac.org.

Region IV Director’s Newsletter

Rebecca Perez Region IV Director [email protected]

June 2014 Another Region IV Meeting has successfully drawn to a close. I want to give a resounding thanks to the Tyler Club and to GAC Michelle Potter for a region meeting we won’t soon forget. Especially me. With being kept in the loop by Michelle on all aspects of the planning, I now understand how much behind the scenes work it takes to make an enjoyable and educational region meeting. One of the main highlights of the business session is the election of the next year’s Region Director. Congratulations to Cindy Miller of the Victoria Club on becoming the 2015 Region IV Director Elect. Thanks for stepping up to take on this awesome and rewarding responsibility. And who can wait for the Member Recognition Awards Luncheon? Anyone that has written something that was entered in the AIMEE contest is anxiously waiting for the winners to be announced. Everyone who has taken the time to enter any of the categories is a winner and I congratulate each and every one of you. The entries that happen to get a first place at region will be shipped to convention to compete with the other first place winners from the other regions. Good luck to all of you. My highlight of the day is when I adjourned the 55th

Annual Region IV Meeting at the Industry Banquet that night and realized that I had made it. Thanks for all the support and encouragement shown to me.

The summer months are fast approaching. For those clubs that do not have meetings during these months, remember that your program reports still need to be sent in. If not, it will affect your tax exempt status. March was Desk and Derrick Orientation and Awareness month but that doesn’t mean you still can’t recruit new members all year round. Our membership numbers are declining so I encourage you to go out and bring some in. It is not too early for members to contemplate in being a Region IV Rep for 2015. If you are interested get with Cindy Miller and sign up. She still has some spots left to fill. The next deadline for the DDJ is July 1st. If you have done anything fun, exciting or interesting to share this year, please get it to me by June 20th

. I will forward all information to Diana Walker.

Nominations for the Distinguished Service Award and for Special Achievement Awards must be received by the Public Relations Chairperson no later than July 15th

, 2014. All entries must be submitted either via e-mail/electronic file or postmarked via USPS by 5:00 pm CST. ADDC members and non-members will be eligible for nomination for the Distinguished Service Award and only ADDC members, clubs and/or committees are eligible for nominations for the Special Achievement Award. The nomination forms and guidelines are on the ADDC website.

The 63rd Annual ADDC Convention is September 24-28 in Lafayette, Louisiana. Registration is $225 if postmarked by July 15 and increases to $250 after July 15th. Hotel reservations can be made at the Hilton Lafayette at telephone number 337-235-6111. Remember to use the code ADD when making your hotel reservations and the cost is $129 for double to quad room. Only one room reservation per credit card will be allowed. The deadline for the group rate is September 1st

.

June 2014 Time is flying and all seven regions have held their regional meetings. Each meeting offered a uniquely diverse educational experience, ranging from visiting the Flight 93 Memorial in Region I, to visiting Pumping Services in Region IV, to attend the Desk and Derrick Derby in Region VII. I was honored to be able to attend four of the 7 meetings. Thank you to each of the clubs for the education and hospitality. Two more directors have been elected since my last correspondence with you. They are:

• Penny Jacobs – Three Rivers Club – Region I • Deborah Porath – Alberta Foothills Club – Region VII

They will make great additions to the leaders of the Association. Please congratulate them and show them your support. Many topics were discussed at these meetings, including email voting, changes in Association Bylaws, streamlining the way the ADDC conducts business, and the use of technology. I urge you to discuss these topics among members who were unable to attend, and gather your ideas and thoughts on them. They will again be discussed at the open forum during convention. These are exciting times. The Education Committee has added another webinar to the website. Pamela Berg, Edmonton Club Region VII, has connected the Association on Linked-In, and will soon be sending out invitations to connect to our page. Probably most exciting is the Member Orientation video now on the members’ page of the website. This video is a useful tool for both the seasoned and fledgling member alike. It offers a brief history, and breakdown of the structure of the Association. Thank you April Lang of Penn-York Oil & Gas Affiliates for creating and filming this video. The Public Relations Committee is hard at work looking for candidates for the Distinguished Service Award (DSA) and the Special Achievement Award (SAA). The DSA is presented to individuals in recognition of outstanding service to the energy and allied industries, or to the Association. The SAA may be awarded to a club, a member or a committee within the Association for contributions to the ADDC in the form of special projects, workshops or seminars. More information can be found on the member page of the ADDC website under the forms section. The deadline for nominations is July 15, 2014. Please remember, no one can be recognized if no one is nominated.

Our call to convention has been posted. The 63rd

Annual ADDC Convention - Livin’, Lovin’ Lafayette will be here in less than 4 months. The deadline to take advantage of the price break is July 15, 2014. With a combination of 15 field trips and seminars, there are plenty of educational experiences for all. Will you choose the Port of Iberia trip, or the Shadows on the Teche? Will you attend this year’s certification class on Accounting, or learn the Cajun Waltz and Zydeco? September will be here before you know it, so do not hesitate and get your registration in now.

My original, intended theme for this year was Together We Can. Though I chose a different direction for my year, I still believe that as an organization, together we can do anything. We can bring the Association forward, while preserving our history. We can embrace the changes we need to keep D&D viable and vibrant. We can regain our place at the forefront of Energy Education. To quote Paula Mace: “We owe it to our employers and ourselves to be education and energy ambassadors.” Linda Rodgers
