The land that stretches from Puhoi north to the Brynderwyns, flanked by Kaipara Harbour on its west and the Hauraki Gulf on the east, has much to recommend it. The west coast, along SH16, is treasured for its wild beaches and remote farming vistas. There’s more of a buzz on the east coast, with its surf, white sandy beaches and safe boating opportunities. And scattered between the coasts are numerous towns and villages with quaint customs and some wacky locals. Consider yourself warned!?

Congratulations if you are reading this on the northern side of Johnston Tunnels; that means you’ve survived central Auckland’s noise and chaos. Now it’s time to take your foot off the accelerator, wipe the sweat off your brow, breathe deeply and relax. Forget about the diet and throw away the watch; the only taxing decisions you’ll have to make

during your visit here are ‘should I have one scoop or three?’

‘jandals or no jandals?’ and ‘is four crosswords

a day overdoing it?’ You’re on ‘holiday time’ now so go with the flow and keep this guide to the Mahurangi region handy because you

don’t want to miss all that this wonderful area

has to offer.

Puhoi slow moving waterIt’s hard to avoid the word ‘quaint’ when describing Puhoi. Although subdivision is creeping in, the village retains a rural character dominated by the grand old Puhoi Hotel, built around 1900. As you enter the village you pass a wooden shrine, erected in 1953 as part of Puhoi’s 90th celebrations. The Church of Saints Peter and Paul is a little further on the left. Opened in 1881, the church has 22 stained glass windows and the altar painting is an exact copy of one in a church in Bohemia, where the first Puhoi settlers emigrated from in 1863. Other notable sites

in the village include the library, hall, museum, cemetery and historic wharf, each with their own story to tell.

In 2013, Puhoi will celebrate the 150th anniversary of its Bohemian settlement. Reunion plans to commemorate the arrival of the 83 Bohemian immigrants, who reached New Zealand on June 29, 1863, after more than 100 days at sea, are well underway. The celebrations will include a community dinner, dances, church services, tours of the village, family reunions, and a landing re-enactment over the weekend of June 28 to 30. While the Puhoi community was once almost exclusively Bohemian-descended, the population today represents a wide mix of ethnicities and family backgrounds. The celebrations will both honour the village’s heritage and celebrate its many new residents.

TRAVEL TIPIf you want a conversation

starter in Puhoi, just ask a local how they feel about having

no access to the proposed new state highway.

Word of caution: Only do this if

you have at least three hours

to spare.

The Kaipara Coast Highway (SH16) offers an alternative route and is often used when SH1 is blocked. It can be accessed from Puhoi via Ahuroa Road and the West Coast Highway. The Kaipara is steeped in both Maori and European history, and some of these stories are best told at museums in Helensville and Matakohe. Fringed by large

stands of kauri and flax, highly prized commodities in those early days, the harbour was once an important commercial link to Auckland. Many a ship was wrecked on its treacherous bar during this period. Today life around the harbour travels at a more sedentary pace, where farming and forestry underpin its economy.

WarkworthJust like the slow-moving Mahurangi River, which played such a part in the town’s early development, Warkworth isn’t a place to hurry through. Most of the shops, galleries and cafes are run by their owners, who are only too happy to chat with customers and deliver old-fashioned personal service. The town has numerous attractions including the Warkworth & Districts Museum at Parry Kauri Park, the riverbank walkway, Lucy Moore Park and the Courthouse built in 1880. The magnificent Norfolk Pine in the grounds of the Warkworth Inn, in the main street, was planted in 1874 to commemorate the birth of the then-publican’s son.

Warkworth Country Retreat

WarkworthOne of the best kept secrets of Warkworth is Parry Kauri Park, next to the Warkworth & District Museum, off Wilson Road, where you will find two particularly magnificent kauri trees. Brochures are available from the museum shop, which describe and identify the native trees and shrubs found in the park, once owned by the Reverend McKinney, Warkworth’s first Presbyterian minister. The land was later purchased by the Simpson family and the two large kauri trees are named in honour of these former landowners. The park and driveway bear the names of Harry Parry and Tudor Collins, local identities who were largely responsible, along with the Kauri Bushmen’s Association, for raising the money to purchase the land.

festive timesThe two-week long Kowhai Festival, held each October, is one of the most anticipated events on the Warkworth calendar. Arranged entirely by volunteers, it has a 40 year history and is NZ’s second longest-running festival. The finale event is always The Huge Day Out, which involves turning the town basin into ‘party central’. It’s small town NZ life as its best; where boutique food and wine sellers mix easily with community groups running cake stalls, homemade lolly stands, quick fire raffles, canoe races and dog shows. Free entertainment is provided throughout the day.

Sandspit/KawauSandspit is the stepping off point for Kawau Island, which covers more than 2000 hectares, mostly privately owned. The Department of Conservation administers about 10 percent of the island including Mansion House, the stately home of early governor George Grey. Originally used for sheep farming, the discovery of manganese and copper lead to a mining boom around the mid-1800s. The remains of the mine’s brick pump house chimney and a tunnel can be explored near Bon Accord Harbour. Access to the island is by private boat or water taxi. Kawau Bay is a renowned fishing and sailing paradise.

into the blueMotuora Island, just south of Kawau, is a work in progress. It is an “open sanctuary” for endangered species, which is being replanted with native trees and shrubs by volunteers after many years of farming. Motuora is a “taonga” (treasure), to which the “tangata whenua” (people of the land) have a spiritual, cultural and historical relationship. The 80 hectare island is administered by the Department of Conservation. Camping is permitted and there is good landing for kayaks and boats. The island is predator-free and brown kiwi have been introduced. For details on how to access the island, contact the Department of Conservation’s Warkworth office on 09 425 7842.

Mahurangi EastThe Mahurangi East Peninsula forms the northern arm of the Mahurangi River and includes the settlements of Snells Beach, Sandspit, Algies Bay, Martins Bay and Scotts Landing. Several vantage points along the peninsula give spectacular views of Kawau Bay and nearby islands. Scandrett Regional Park, named after the Scandrett family who farmed on the land for more than 130 years, is well worth a visit. The park includes a collection of farm buildings, as well as the Scandrett Homestead built in 1884 of an early type of concrete instead of the usual kauri timber. Highfield Garden Reserve, at Algies Bay, has great views and tame donkeys.

?DID YOU KNOW?The average price of

land on the peninsula when James Snell

arrived in the 1860s was 10 shillings an acre.

astounding viewsThe historic Mahurangi Regatta is held every summer at Sullivans Bay or Scotts Landing, depending on the weather. It’s believed the first regattas were organised around the establishment of Gordon Browne’s spar station in 1832. However, they lapsed during World War II and weren’t held again until the Friends of the Mahurangi resurrected the event in 1977 to raise awareness of issues of sedimentation in the harbour. Today, the regattas include numerous on-the-water and land-based events for the whole family to enjoy. Sometimes up to 100 classic or classic-style boats will take part, making a spectacular sight on the water.

If you’re in to walking, then there are plenty to pathways and tracks to choose from, regardless of your level of fitness. Some of the more challenging are on the Te Araroa Walkway, a continuous 3000 kilometre-long route from Cape Reinga to Bluff. It enters the Mangawhai/Mahurangi region from the north with the 7km Bream Tail Mangawhai Walkway. Other sections include the Te Arai beach walk (17km), Mt Tamahunga Te Hikoi o te Kiri track (11km), Govan Wilson to Dome (12.5km), Dome to Moirs Hill (18km), and Dunns Ridge Track (5km). A private self-guided walk on the Kaipara (K2K) crosses private land and is open to just a few paying guests at a time. There are also plenty of shorter walk through regional parks, and along the coastline and rivers. For more information visit an i-SITE.

quiet pursuitsThe peak oil debate has shone the spotlight on a perfectly feasible alternative – cycling. Communities at Point Wells and Matakana have rolled up their shirt sleeves and decided to get on with the job of building a few themselves. A five kilometre walkway/cycleway now links Point Wells to Omaha thanks to the joint effort of residents, local businesses and council, and work on stage two of a nine kilometre walkway/cycleway from Omaha to Matakana is set to happen this summer. Cycling enthusiasts have unveiled an even grander plan to one day link all the villages between Warkworth and Leigh.

Tawharanui Regional Park

Assiduously acquired over the last 40 years, Auckland’s regional parks network protects about 40,000 hectares, or 8.5 percent, of the region’s land area. It encompasses 26 parks in all, including many in the north – Wenderholm, Mahurangi, Scandrett, Tawharanui, Pakiri, Te Arai and Atiu Creek. Each park has its own fascinating story; how it came to be acquired, its special features and how it’s used. Volunteers play a huge part in the upkeep of many of the parks, which exist to protect the land for conservation, heritage and recreation purposes. Farming operations also occur at Tawharanui and Atiu, and a marine reserve was recently gazetted offshore of Tawharanui. Day trippers make up the bulk of visitors, but camp sites and bach stays are available. Visit: www.aucklandcouncil.govt.nz

Matakana

The iconic public toilets, overlooking the tidal Matakana River, caused quite a stir when it was suggested that the town wanted something better than the bog-standard council dunny. After staging a national competition, it was young Matakana teenager Steffan de Haan’s design, which got the tick of approval. Although council agreed to meet part of the costs, it took the community seven years to raise the balance. The complex houses two unisex toilets, with an exterior that features recycled kauri panelling and shotcrete walls, sandstone cobbles and marble tiles. The distinctive heads at the entrance were cast from fibreglass moulds. The toilets were declared officially open for business in 2009.

No-one is more surprised by Matakana’s appearance on visitor ‘must see and do’ lists than the local themselves. It wasn’t so long ago that the village existed primarily as a service centre for the surrounding farming communities. The main industries in the town in earlier times were a dairy factory, abattoir and timber yard. However, times have changed and today the village is a hive of activity throughout the week, thanks to three world-class cinemas, galleries, boutiques and specialist shops. Saturdays get even crazier when the morning markets set-up. There’s no better place to go if you’re looking to fill the larder with some home-grown, locally-produced food and drink, and to do a spot of people-watching over a cup of coffee.

TRAVEL TIPDon’t

approach a local in Matakana

before they’ve

had their first cup of coffee.

A local winegrower recently remarked how much more experienced and confident people have become in their wine tasting since he opened his cellar door in 1997. Whereas once a group might defer to one amongst them who was perceived to have tasting expertise, today more and more visitors will engage in insightful discussion about the wines they taste. Matakana has been producing premium wines for several years. Although it began as mainly a red wine growing region, there are now some outstanding white wines especially chardonnay and pinot gris. The classic red varieties of merlot, cabernet sauvignon, syrah, pinotage, pinot noir and sangiovese have also shown consistent excellence. The winemakers are a diverse community, approaching the business of making a living from wine in very different ways. Some sell most of their output through their winery/restaurant; others export nationally and overseas. Hospitality and tastings at the cellar door are commonplace.

Omaha is a patrolled beach during the summer, which makes it a great destination for families, as well as surfers. For those less beach-inclined there’s the Omaha recreation area, which offers golf, tennis, lawn bowls and petanque. Special care is needed if walking near the end of the spit which is a nesting area for NZ dotterel. Other birds at the spit include the banded dotterels, godwits, pied stilts, variable oystercatchers, Caspian and white-fronted terns and black backed gulls. A pest-proof fence is being built to improve the birds’ survival rates. Dolphins are often spotted offshore so keep your eyes peeled for these marine wanderers.

The park integrates conservation, farming and public recreation, allowing visitors – especially townies – to experience nature first-hand. Under the stewardship of the former Auckland Regional Council, supported by a small army of volunteers, a predator-proof fence has been built, pests eradicated and thousands of native trees and shrubs planted. It’s become a mainland sanctuary where species such as kereru, bellbird, kaka and even kiwi safely co-exist.

Leigh’s catchline isn’t Leigh by the Sea for nothing. It’s home to NZ’s oldest marine reserve at Goat Island and its main employer, Leigh Fisheries, has operated in the village for more than 50 years. A total of 100 independent boats fish for the company bringing in snapper, tarakihi, trevally, john dory, blue cod and swordfish to name just a few. Most of the fish are air freighted to arrive at destinations in Europe and the US within three days of being caught. Dominating the view from Leigh is Little Barrier, or Hauturu resting place of the wind, which has been a bird sanctuary for more than 100 years. Landing on the island is strictly prohibited without a pre-arranged permit.

?DID YOU KNOW?An exciting new museum is under construction in

Mangawhai, focusing on the story of the harbour.

The best advice when visiting one of the area’s many museums is ‘don’t be in a hurry’. As the name suggests, The Kauri Museum, at Matakohe, tells the story of the mighty kauri forests which once covered large tracts of the north. The museum holds the largest collection of kauri gum in the world and exhibits include a full-scale boarding house. The Albertland Museum, in Wellsford, houses extensive records and memorabilia relating to the Albertland settlers from the 1860s, while Warkworth & District Museum pays a lot of attention to the domestic lives of early settlers. The Bohemian Settlers Museum, at Puhoi, has the genealogical records of early Puhoi immigrants and gives visitors an appreciation of the area’s development. Volunteers play an integral part in maintaining and showing local museum collections, and are always happy to assist where they can.

Wellsford back to the country

In the early 1860s a special settlement for Methodists and other ‘nonconformist’ Protestants was founded at Albertland, on the Kaipara Harbour, west of Wellsford. The local minister was William Gittos, who maintained good relations with the local tribe Te Uri o Hau. However, Albertland never rivalled Auckland, as its backers had promised. There was no road to the extremely isolated settlement, and farming conditions were difficult. Many intending Albertlanders remained in Auckland instead and most others drifted away, leaving only a small and determined core of Methodist pioneers. The descendents of these stoic settlers will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Albertland settlement over Easter 2012.

Straddling SH1, Wellsford’s town centre has a choice of cafes and restaurants where travellers can pick up fast-food or enjoy a leisurely meal. The Albertland & District Museum, just above the town on Port Albert Road, is well worth a visit or wander down to the old railway station, now just a shadow of the busy centre it was when it opened more than a century ago. The freshwater lakes of Tomarata are a great family destination for picnics, swimming and water-skiing. Just south of the town is the 4.3 km Dome Valley Walkway, which takes about two hours to complete. From the Dome summit (336m), there are views of the Hauraki Gulf and Mahurangi Peninsula. Te Hana is on the highway just north of Wellsford, where the replica Maori village has recently

opened across the road from ‘jewellery for giants’ Arts Factory.

The NZ dotterel can be found scurrying along the shore of Te Arai at almost any time of year. They sport a brilliant rusty red breast when prospecting and breeding, between July and March. Over the breeding season, volunteers at Te Arai monitor bird safety. Fenced areas mark where the dotterel chicks may be, but dotterel chicks roam outside these areas so visitors need to take care. Be mindful of the sounds of warning these birds make and keep dogs and vehicles off the beach.

Sand, sun and surf make a heady combination too good to resist for the thousands of holidaymakers who head for Mangawhai every summer. While the beach is definitely a major drawcard, there’s a huge range of ways to enjoy this special part of the north. The 5km Mangawhai Cliffs Walkway, one of the most stunning walks in the region, is one of many tracks in the area. The estuary is a safe haven for water skiers and sailors, and several charter operators can help you catch the one that won’t get away. There’s a first class golf course at the Heads, next door to the newly-developed skatepark. Markets operate on weekends and are a great place to stock up on olives, wine and other locally-grown and locally-made fare.

Marine Discovery CentreEdith Winstone Blackwell Centre

This exciting new attraction at the Goat Island Marine Reserve will take you on a journey to discover the rich marine life in the reserve and surrounding coast.

Meet some of the next generation of marine scientists and learn about cutting-edge research through displays, videos, marine collections and a rocky shore tank.

www.leighmarine.auckland.ac.nz +64 9 373 7599 ext 83645

Recreation make a splash

The Edith Winstone blackwell Centre, at Leigh Marine Laboratory

Overlooking the reserve is the University of Auckland’s Leigh Marine Laboratory, which recently opened the Edith Winstone Blackwell Centre. The centre features marine science displays, videos, touch tank and marine collections. It provides visitors with a wider understanding of the marine life in the reserve and showcases the work being undertaken by marine scientists at the laboratory.

The coastline, from Tawharanui to Mangawhai has numerous surfing spots, which all work differently depending on the winds and swells. Boaties are well-catered for with launching ramps at many locations, although congestion at some of these ramps can be a problem at the height of summer requiring everyone to exercise a little patience.

The name Goat Island has become synonymous with marine conservation and education. The 547-hectare Cape Rodney-Okakari Pt Marine Reserve, our first marine reserve, was established there in 1975. Protection has turned this stretch of coastline into a marine wonderland made up of rocky inter-tidal platform reefs, kelp forests, urchin barrens, sponge gardens, sub-tidal sand flats and warm temperate reef fish. There are many ways to enjoy the reserve, but nothing beats jumping in with mask, snorkel and fins to swim amongst the sea life. The best time to visit is when there is less than a one-metre swell and little or no wind.
