Whether you’re looking for relaxation, exhilaration or inspiration, you’ll find what you need within easy reach, north of the Johnstone Hill tunnels on State Highway 1. The village of Puhoi is the first stop on a voyage of discovery west to the Kaipara Harbour, north to Waipu and historic Matakohe, and along the stunning beaches, regional parks and islands of the east coast.A blend of rural and coastal landscapes, thriving cottage industries, characterful towns and comprehensive services awaits your every whim. You’ll find the locals wise and at times whacky, but always welcoming. Choose action and adventure, beachside bliss or a sedate cultural cruise. Sample gastronomic delights and explore the trend to natural, organic, fresh local produce. Sip your way through our wine country and take home your favourite vintage to enjoy again.

Don’t let Trade Me trap you indoors – see it, touch it, try before you buy and feel free to haggle if you have to have it. Take the opportunity to buy New Zealand made, from craft and art to food, fashion and fun. Take a day trip or take your time, there are plenty of accommodation options available from luxury lodges and B&Bs, to homestays, cabins, camping and motels. Keen to know more? Ask the locals or call in at visitor centres and information sites located in Orewa, Warkworth, Matakana, Mangawhai, Kaiwaka and Matakohe.

Leisure is a matter of interpretation. For some it’s slow dining, beach reclining or a stroll through stunning scenery, while for others it’s an action-packed adrenalin ride through unchartered territory. Whatever your preferred pace, you’ll find it all and more just north of Auckland. Be among the first to experience New Zealand’s newest private walk, K2K (Kaipara to Kaipara), unlocking privately owned land to access spectacular Kaipara Coast scenery, flora and fauna. Open to just a few paying guests at a time, the self-guided, three-day, 35km walk meanders through farmland, exotic and native forests and along the coast, and is billed as a birdwatcher’s dream. From boardwalks to bushwalks, or coastlines, ridgelines and clifftops, visitors of all ages, fitness and ability levels can also access some great natural environments for free. If you need something steady underfoot, Omaha offers a boardwalk behind the dunes starting from the surf club and Snells Beach has a paved walk running along most of its length, while Warkworth riverside is an easy stroll staying close to the village. Tap the local knowledge with a behind the scenes tour like Warkworth tours new Blokes and Sheds option providing a sneak peek into the private collections of locals with a passion for everything from vintage and matchbox cars to horse drawn carriages and historic machinery. Visit unique private properties, with features like a retro American-style gas station, get your nose under the bonnet of restorations in progress and chat to the owner in person. Ask for other personalised tours related to your interests, be they wine, gardens, art or shopping.

Action adventures can be found from the saddle of your mountain bike or on horseback. There are also plenty of surfing and fishing hotspots. Pack a kayak, or hire one along the way.

No couch potatoes here

Note to self Check websites for details before you go – you’ll get wifi at the Warkworth i-SITE. Don’t miss a night drive through Kaiwaka – the little town of lights.

She’s a retired working girl, who has become the showpiece of the Warkworth Wharf. The scow Jane Gifford was built locally in 1908 and was a regular visitor to the area early last century. Recently restored, she was re-launched during her 100th year to become a sail training ship and charter boat. Public sailings take around an hour and the ticket price goes towards ongoing restoration costs. For further information, visit www.janegifford.orgWarkworth and District Museum located in Parry Kauri Park, just south of the town, features changing displays including re-created rooms with furniture and household goods of the 1920s, clothing and accessories from the late 1700s to the 1960s, and more. Outdoors you’ll find buildings, wagons and farm equipment from the early 1900s including a bushman’s hut and the old Warkworth jail. Kauri is king at Matakohe’s The Kauri Museum, an award-winning attraction on the upper reaches of the Kaipara Harbour, en route to the scenic Kauri Coast where actors and moving machinery bring pioneering history to life. Notably, the museum has the largest display of kauri gum in the world, a life sized replica of a two storey boarding house, a pioneer school and the historic Matakohe Post Office with a fascinating collection of telephones, particularly amazing in the mobile phone age. Visitors between December 7 and January 5 will be treated to a special display of traditional Victorian Christmas decorations.

There are also museums at Wellsford, Mangawhai and Puhoi. Popular with genealogy hunters, the Albertland and District Museum tells the story of the 3000 Albertland migrants delivered to the colony in the early 1860s. The Puhoi Bohemian Museum housed in the historic Convent School recalls the struggle of Bohemians, who settled in Puhoi in 1863.

Arts and crafts are integral to the fabric of the north Rodney region with galleries overlapping with fine dining in cafes, restaurants and bars, sculpture parks matched with wine, and historic and cultural artefacts adorning parks and buildings. The metal art animals at Wellsford, the public toilets at Matakana and the giant sculptures at TeHana point to the drive for beauty and originality.

Founder of the famed Morris and James Pottery and Tileworks, Anthony Morris is among stalwart craftsmen in the region, having established his business on the banks of the Matakana River in 1977. His recently released book Mud and Colour Man – The Morris and James Story captures the journey of building the business complete with its lows (like facing receivership) and highs (like the boom time of the 80s) all with the support and loyalty of the Matakana community. Travellers can view the works of many of the region’s other talented artists inspired by their surroundings and lifestyle. Jewellery, ceramics, painting, photography, sculpture and crafts can be found in a myriad of galleries, markets and studios. To combine a scenic stroll in stunning natural settings with art appreciation and the chance to take home things you love, consider the likes of Kaipara Coast Sculpture Gardens, on the Kaipara Coast Highway, or the Brick Bay Wines and Sculpture Trail, near Matakana.

Take time to admire the skill and beauty in carved pou whenua at various sites where they acknowledge and represent the relationship between tangata whenua (the people of the land), their ancestors and their environment or tarangawaewae (place of standing).

Be inspired

Note to self Artist studios may keep irregular hours. If you want to be sure of access phone ahead. Artworks can often be packaged and posted to save having to cart them around.

With thousands of workers on the job every day it’s no wonder that one tourist stop is creating a buzz! The Honey Centre, just before Warkworth on State Highway One, is serving up a healthy range of honey varieties, honey mead, fruit wines, café food along with pollen, propolis, beeswax, beeswax candle supplies, bee keeping supplies, gifts and souvenirs. It is New Zealand’s largest display of live bees.Specialist foods don’t stop there, from gourmet cheese producers in Puhoi and Kaiwaka to organic farm fresh produce, locally-produced olive oils and handmade treats, the region is serving up something to tempt all tastes. A focus on real fruit and organic ingredients where possible is the hallmark of many food retailers, with many roadside shops well worth a stop. Charlies Gelato Garden, for instance, just outside Matakana, features a new gelato or sorbetto flavour each month. Manuka honey and almond was so good it became a regular flavour. Chocolate lovers may find a compulsory stop in Warkworth where Chocolate Brown offers handmade confections created daily using Belgian coverture and European recipes incorporating NZ cream and butter, fresh nuts, fruits, liqueurs and natural flavours, and leaving out preservatives.

Dining styles are as diverse as traditional tea house treats, to kiwi classic fish and chips, gourmet pub grub including wood-fired pizzas and award winning fine dining, winery style. Check out the menu and service that saw Ascension Estate’s The Oak Grill Bistro win ‘Outstanding Dining Experience’ in the 2010 Rodney Manaakitanga (hospitality and service) Awards, a venue where ingredients may come from its own heirloom herb and vegetable gardens.

Savour the experience

Note to self Check operating hours to avoid disappointment. Book ahead to reserve a table at busy times. Let staff know about special dietary needs – they’ll be happy to help with appropriate options.

As an emerging wine region with a growing reputation, Matakana has more than its fair share of attractive options, for everyone from the casual taster to the wine connoisseur. Local winemaker Mike Reid says visitors will be spoilt for choice of quality boutique wines. “There is a huge focus on quality here and our wines are highly crafted. It’s a very hands-on process and 2010 is looking like one of its better vintages.” Older is not always better, says Mike, the best vintage depends on the quality of the grapes and this year’s whites and roses should make great summer drinking, while the reds will be resting in oak for release later in the year. With grape varieties ranging from the mainstream chardonnay, merlot and pinot gris to the more exotic sangiovese, carmenere and viognier (v-on-yay) and everything in between, there’s good reason to step outside your comfort zone and try something new. Winery owners frequently offer hospitality and tastings at the cellar door where you’ll encounter a warm welcome and an opportunity to sample various vintages. Drink in the value-added experience of talking to people who know their product, having the chance to try before you buy, getting advice on cellaring and more. Take the time to enjoy the huge range of winery cafes and restaurants that will demonstrate good pairings of wine with food, often prepared from fresh local ingredients.

Sign up with wineries online to be kept informed of their latest offerings and events such as grape stomping and occasional “bottle your own” offers. The Vintry is dedicated to wine from grapes grown within a 16km radius of its premises. For a fruity diversion consider picking up some of Lothlorien Winery’s famous feijoa wine on Ahuroa Road, near Puhoi.

Fruit of the vine

Note to self Wine tasting protocol is simple: step one, observe and appreciate the colour; step two, take time to appreciate the smell “the nose”; step three, taste in your mouth. Your taste impressions are as valid as anyone else’s and you either like it or you don’t. (Spit out the wine after tasting, or ensure you have a designated sober driver.)

A road trip north is an invitation to return to the days when shopping was so much more than a hectic dash to the mall or a stultifying session in front of your computer, combing through the latest auctions online. Townships cater for everything from your most basic needs to some unique gifts and treasures tucked away in boutique stores and craft markets, while roadside outlets may provide access to one-off finds and artisans in action. Browsing is welcomed and gives you the chance to see, touch and try things you could not have imagined. The best locally handcrafted items rub shoulders with exquisite specialty items sourced from around the world. Shop owners and staff know their goods inside out and enjoy the opportunity to share their knowledge with customers.Take Matakana’s Red Letter Day store where Graham and Lindy MacDonald provide a range of high end writing instruments, accessories and stationery to customers who share their belief in the artisan culture and the power of the written word. The range includes discoveries from international stationery fairs and exclusive New Zealand access to stylish brands like Vera Wang stationery, El Casco handmade desk accessories from Spain’s Basque region and acclaimed Jac Zagoory pen and desk art. Meanwhile, Graham produces hyper-realistic pencil drawings, often crafted in store while customers look on.

Along with the latest international trends you’ll find a healthy dose of recycled kiwi heritage and style with the likes of Wellsford Traders and Warkworth’s Mrs Jones going retro with a focus on kiwiana and items of restored glory. Roadside stops can also reveal antiques and collectables.

Browsing at leisu re

Note to self A trip plan can help you hit all of the highlights – but allow time for unexpected diversions that make each visit unique. A stop at the local information centre is often a worthwhile starting point for any itinerary. A shingle hanging on the roadside is usually an invitation to stop and browse.

Summer is recession-proofed in northern Rodney with bountiful selection of regional parks offering free access to some unmatched charms of the region. Regional parks on Auckland’s north-eastern coast protect 38.5 km of coastline where visitors can enjoy priceless views, walks, camping, picnicking, kayaking, mountain biking, fishing, beaches, flora and fauna. At Tawharanui Regional Park kiwis of the feathered kind have taken up permanent residence and are successfully breeding in the wild behind the 2.5km predator-proof fence. Here you can walk the coast, mountain bike, view wildlife on the ecology trail or indulge in watersports from surfing Anchor Bay to swimming, kayaking, sailing, snorkelling and diving. Tawharanui’s Marine Park has recently been upgraded to Marine Reserve. South of Tawharanui, Scandrett Regional Park encompasses another popular fishing spot, Mullet Point, which also offers spectacular clifftop views of Kawau Island. Surprises are in store for visitors to Scandrett’s historic farm precinct, including audio within the old cowshed of the former owner George Scandrett whistling his dogs and reciting the alphabet backwards, as he used to make all his children do.

Atiu Creek Regional Park covers more than 800 hectares overlooking the Kaipara Harbour, featuring a range of tracks ideal for longer walks, a family mountain bike adventure or even horse riding (with a pass and a purchased key for access throughout the season). Expect panoramic views, historic places, mature and regenerating native forest and accompanying wildlife, wetlands and estuarine mangroves (but no suitable swimming beach).

Off the beaten track

Note to self Just walking a few minutes further from your car soon thins out the crowd. Book early for park accommodation in peak summer months. Gas barbecues are always allowed, but open fires on beaches are not. Dogs are prohibited from many regional park areas (including carparks) and reserves. Check the rules.

New Zealand’s first marine reserve and one of the world’s most established no-take marine environments, Goat Island (officially Cape Rodney–Okakari Point Marine Reserve) is an attraction not to missed. Just 3.5km from Leigh township and within an hour and a half of Auckland, the reserve protects 547 hectares of shore and sea that was once severely depleted.

Snapper up to a metre in length, colourful schools of blue maomao, goatfish, banded wrasse, parore, spottie, stingrays and dolphin sightings can all be part of the voyage. About 150 species are resident in the area. Remember that wind and swells can impact visibility even when it’s sunny, so if you are thinking of a trip on the glass bottom boat, phone ahead to ensure conditions are suitable for viewing. For those willing to get wet, the reserve represents some of the best snorkelling and scuba diving in New Zealand. The environment caters to all levels of experience, with supervised “try dive” options for the uninitiated and night dives possible for the adventurous. Bring your own gear or book with local operators. February is the warmest month but wetsuits are recommended for divers in all seasons.Access a variety of habitats, from rocky shores (exposed at low tide) to deep reefs and caves outside the island and from seaweed forests to sponge gardens, but remember that all marine life is protected including kina (sea urchins) which are in decline. Ashore you can enjoy a 1.5-2hr return walk from the carpark along the coast across University of Auckland land, passing farmland and through coastal broadleaf forest remnants and restoration planting.

Get your feet wet

Note to self New Zealand has 30 marine reserves but still only 0.3 per cent of the country’s total marine environment is protected in this way. Reserve rules include no fishing within the marine reserve boundary, no feeding the fish, no dogs and no taking of any part of the marine environment.
